Abstract

This work considers the problem of a trader who must manage the Credit Valuation Adjustment (CVA) of a derivative, defined as the risk-neutral expectation of losses incurred if the counterparty of the derivative defaults. CVA can be regarded as a hybrid product, one of the most complex actively managed by a trading desk. Standard delta hedging based on sensitivities is not completely satisfactory for this product, because it ignores trading costs and jump-to-default risk while introducing unavoidable simplifications in the pricing model. In this paper we use risk-averse Reinforcement Learning to learn a superior hedging strategy compared to the standard delta hedging approach. Specifically, we generalize risk-averse Reinforcement Learning to stochastic horizons, to be compatible with counterparty defaults, and we introduce a realistic framework for the mechanics of the hedger's portfolio in which the data generating process of the underlying risk drivers can be inconsistent with the risk-neutral laws used to price the CVA and the hedging instruments. The potential of the proposed approach is investigated empirically by numerical examples on hedging the CVA of a forex forward.

Abstract

We provide a database of the coseismic geological surface effects following the Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake that hit central Italy on 30 October 2016. This was one of the strongest seismic events to occur in Europe in the past thirty years, causing complex surface ruptures over an area of >400 km2. The database originated from the collaboration of several European teams (Open EMERGEO Working Group; about 130 researchers) coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The observations were collected by performing detailed field surveys in the epicentral region in order to describe the geometry and kinematics of surface faulting, and subsequently of landslides and other secondary coseismic effects. The resulting database consists of homogeneous georeferenced records identifying 7323 observation points, each of which contains 18 numeric and string fields of relevant information. This database will impact future earthquake studies focused on modelling of the seismic processes in active extensional settings, updating probabilistic estimates of slip distribution, and assessing the hazard of surface faulting.

Abstract

We present a 1:25,000 scale map of the coseismic surface ruptures following the 30 October 2016 M-w 6.5 Norcia normal-faulting earthquake, central Italy. Detailed rupture mapping is based on almost 11,000 oblique photographs taken from helicopter flights, that has been verified and integrated with field data (>7000 measurements). Thanks to the common efforts of the Open EMERGEO Working Group (130 people, 25 research institutions and universities from Europe), we were able to document a complex surface faulting pattern with a dominant strike of N135 degrees-160 degrees (SW-dipping) and a subordinate strike of N320 degrees-345 degrees (NE-dipping) along about 28km of the active Mt. Vettore-Mt. Bove fault system. Geometric and kinematic characteristics of the rupture were observed and recorded along closely spaced, parallel or subparallel, overlapping or step-like synthetic and antithetic fault splays of the activated fault systems, comprising a total surface rupture length of approximately 46km when all ruptures were considered.

25. Surface faulting during the August 24, 2016, Central Italy earthquake (Mw 6.0): preliminary results

Abstract

We present some preliminary results on the mapping of coseismically-induced ground ruptures following the Aug. 24, 2016, Central Italy earthquake (Mw 6.0). The seismogenic source, as highlighted by InSAR and seismological data, ruptured across two adjacent structures: the Mt. Vettore and Laga faults. We col-lected field data on ground breaks along the whole deformed area and two different scenarios of on-fault coseismic displacement arise from these observations. To the north, along the Mt. Vettore fault, surface faulting can be mapped quite continuously along a well-defined fault strand while such features are almost absent to the south, along the Laga fault, where flysch-like marly units are present. A major lithological control affects the surface expression of faulting, resulting in a complex deformation pattern.

Abstract

Dear Participant, we are very happy to welcome you in Pescina (Abruzzi, Italy) for the 6th INQUA International Workshop on Active Tectonics, Paleoseismology and Archaeoseismology (“6th PATA Days”). In the last six years, INQUA TERPRO Focus Group on Paleoseismology and Active Tectonics (PALACTE), supported very successful Workshops annually held in Europe and Overseas, the last in Korea in 2014. The 6th joint meeting locates in the central Apennines, one of the most tectonically active area in the Mediterranean. In fact, the scientific sessions will be attended in the Pescina village that was completely destroyed by the 1915 M7 Fucino earthquake, one of the most devastating earthquakes ever occurred in Italy. This event is also one of the first to be well documented in the Mediterranean, with surface ruptures and other effects on the environment. We will commemorate the Centenary of this event occurrence. We will be also very close to the source of the 2009 M6.3 L’Aquila event, located about 50 km to the north. The two-days field trip will be dedicated to both the earthquake areas. We are expecting a very intense and worldwide scientific meeting with over 180 participants from 25 different countries, and about 150 studies to be presented and discussed. All this will occur in the unique historical atmosphere of the ancient Pescina village at the Centro Studi “Ignazio Silone”, a cultural center devoted to the fellow citizen, world-famous writer. During the Fucino 2015 event we will discuss the final results of the INQUA Project 1299 – EEE METRICS Parametrization of Earthquake Environmental Effects (2011-2015) that will be formally presented on July 2015 at the XIX INQUA Congress in Nagoya (Japan). This will be also the occasion to further discuss future joint research projects for the 2015-2019 intercongress period. Two major research areas have been identified in the PALACTE meeting held in Madrid last year (2628 February 2014), i.e., 1) Minimum Magnitude Surface Rupture (MMR) and Maximum Potential Earthquake (MPE) from paleoseismic Quaternary records, and 2) Geological Earthquake Mapping of recent, historical and paleoseismic events: Quaternary Geology for Seismic Hazard Analyses. Preliminary community projects covering these areas will be discussed during the INQUA Business Meeting in Pescina. You are also kindly invited to the workshop between the European Plate Observing System (EPOS, an integrated solid Earth Sciences research infrastructure), and EuroGeoSurveys (EGS, an organization representing 37 National Geological Surveys and some regional Surveys in Europe). Abstract

The dreadful scenarios of effects caused by the recent catastrophic seismic events in very different parts of the world (from Eastern Asia to Chile and Haiti) are renewing the longlasting global debate among seismologists, geologists and engineers about the best practices and tools to achieve the most complete and reliable seismic hazard assessment. In this note we focus on three recent events that have clearly demonstrated once more that the vibratory ground motion, although a serious source of direct damage, it is by no means the only parametr that should be considered, being most damages caused by the coseismic geological effects, either directly linked to the earthquake source or provoked by the ground shaking ("Earthquake Environmental Effects", EEE). Surface faulting, regional uplift and subsidence, tsunamis, liquefaction, ground resonance, landslides, ground failure, are indeed controlled or induced by the local geological setting.

Abstract

In the last twenty years, the interest of scientific community towards Earthquake Environmental Effects (EEEs) has progressively increased especially in the frame of INQUA - International Union for Quaternary Research. In 2007 the ESI 2007 (Environmental Seismic Intensity scale) was published, a new intensity scale based only on EEEs resulting by a revision process taking about 8 years, and promoted by several geologists, seismologists and engineers coordinated by Servizio Geologico d'Italia (now ISPRA). The ESI 2007 scale integrates traditional intensity scales, and allow to define seismic intensity based on the entir e scenario of effects. In 2011 the EEE Catalogue was launched, a web infrastructure realized by ISPRA for data collection of EEEs induced by recent, historical and paleoearthquakes at global level. Cataloguing and classifying EEEs has allowed to compare past seismic events and to identify the most vulnerable areas in term of site effect. Some strong earthquakes occurred in the last years have unfortunately pointed out the primary role played by geological effects in the scenario of damages, confirming that seismic hazard cannot be evaluated only based on vibratory ground motion but also on the knowledge about EEEs. This volume provides the state of knowledge about these topics, with the aim to promote the use of the ESI 2007 intensity scale, that has been translated into ten languages, and the EEE Catalogue, as an helpful tool also for land planning, especially in high seismic hazard areas.

30. Forensic application of a rapid one-step tetramethylbenzidine-based test for the presumptive trace detection of bloodstains at the crime scene and in the laboratory

Abstract

Bloodstains are a widespread kind of biological evidence at the crime scene and one of the most used reagents for the presumptive identification of blood for forensic purposes is tetramethyl-benzidine. We have introduced and validated the tetramethylbenzidine-based Combur3 Test® E (Roche Diagnostics Corporation, Basel, Switzerland), a colorimetric catalytic test based upon the detection of the peroxidase-like activity of the hemoglobin, due to its high sensitivity, easiness of use and capability to maintain the complete structural and morphological integrity of the bloodstain. Analytical performances related to a forensic use of the test and the suitable applicability to the presumptive detection of bloodstains when extremely diluted, aged, mixed with several substances and deposited over a plethora of substrates was reliably proved. In addition, possible positive interferences of the test chemicals on the subsequent Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) DNA typing analyses, especially in Low-Template DNA (LT DNA) conditions, was evaluated. While the Combur3 Test® E showed the same chemical interference drawbacks as other presumptive tests for blood as for the low specificity, we demonstrated that its format and our suggested protocol of use make it appropriate for the forensic presumptive detection of blood, better performing and much easier to use than other analogous presumptive tests and usually compatible with the following STRs DNA typing analyses.

Abstract

We captured post-seismic deformation close to the surface rupture of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake (M6.3, central Italy) using repeat terrestrial laser scan (TLS) methods. From 8 to 126 d after the earthquake, we repeatedly laser scanned four road surfaces that intersected the earthquake surface rupture. We modelled vertical near-field deformation, at millimetre-level precision, by comparing subsequent laser scan data sets to the first acquired at each site. The horizontal post-seismic deformation at each site was measured between reflectors paired across the rupture. The TLS data were supplemented by total station data from a fifth site which measured the vertical and horizontal components of post-seismic deformation between two points spanning the rupture. We find post-seismic deformation increased between 44 and 126 d at the southeastern end of the rupture, beneath which a significant gradient in coseismic slip exists within the fault zone. The location, rate of decay and spatially-localized nature of the post-seismic deformation, within tens of metres of the surface rupture suggests it is due to afterslip in the fault zone, driven by increased shear stresses at the edges of regions which slipped coseismically. We note that the magnitude of post-seismic deformation in the far field obtained from InSAR and GPS is not significantly greater than the deformations we have measured close to the rupture. We suggest that shallow, localized afterslip within the fault zone is responsible for the majority of the regional post-seismic deformation field.

Abstract

It is commonly believed that the Po Plain is an area of low seismic hazard. This conclusion is essentially a combination of two factors: (1) the historical record of earthquakes, which shows a relatively small number of events of moderate magnitude, and only two significant earthquakes, which occurred in the Middle Ages; and (2) the lack of ad-hoc research on the geology of earthquakes in this area, as although many studies have highlighted the local Quaternary tectonics, only a very few of them have discussed the observed evidence in terms of seismic hazard. In contrast, the data presented in the present study strongly suggest that the level of earthquake hazard in the Po Plain is comparable to that of the well-known seismic areas of the Apennine range, at least in terms of maximum magnitudes. Indeed, the high population density and the concentration of industrial facilities make the Po Plain today one of the more high-risk areas of the Italian territory. The Po Plain represents the foredeep of two growing mountain belts, the southern Alps and the northern Apennines. Recently, modern active tectonics studies have been conducted along its margins to the south, along the northern Apennine Piedmont belt, and to the northeast, along the eastern southern Alpine Piedmont belt. However, in the central and western sectors of the Po Plain, where the south-verging western southern Alpine front links up with the north-verging Monferrato, Emilia and Ferrara arcs, the Quaternary history of tectonic deformation and faulting are still relatively poorly understood. These lie beneath the relatively flat alluvial surface of the Po River, and provide the evidence for paleoseismicity and the resulting seismic hazard. In this review, we compile the data from the literature to reassess the style and magnitude of the ongoing crustal deformation and the associated earthquake faulting. This includes detailed information on historical and instrumental seismicity, extensive subsurface information from the ENI industrial exploration, structural interpretation of three regional seismic reflection profiles, analysis of novel global positioning system data, field mapping at selected key areas, and new paleoseismological investigations. We show that along the western southern Alpine belt between Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, the active tectonic setting is characterized by a segmented belt of fault-propagation folds. These are 50 km wide, and are controlled by the growth of out-of-sequence, 10-to-20-km-long, north and south verging thrusts. Regional global positioning system data show ongoing shortening rates of the order of 1 mm/yr. Quaternary fault slip rates typically range between 0.2 mm/yr and 0.4 mm/yr. Pleistocene shortening is obvious not only along the western southern Alpine outer fronts that are buried beneath the Po Plain, but also along the south Alpine foothills between Brescia and Varese. Similar styles and rates of active folding and thrusting have also been documented along the frontal sector of the northern Apennine arcs, from Torino to Ferrara, and along the base of the Apennine mountain front between Piacenza and Bologna. We selected the Brescia and Como sectors in the western southern Alps and the Monferrato and Mirandola structures in the northern Apennines as examples to illustrate the seismic landscape of the study area, in terms of typical active structural, geomorphic and paleoseismic features. We argue that the level of earthquake hazard in the Po Plain is comparable to that of the Apennine range.

Abstract

Using 3D terrestrial laser scan (TLS) technology, we have recorded postseismic deformation on and adjacent to the surface rupture formed during the 6th April 2009 L'Aquila normal faulting earthquake (Mw 6.3). Using surface modeling techniques and repeated surveys 8-124 days after the earthquake, we have produced a 4D dataset of postseismic deformation across a 3 x 65 m area at high horizontal spatial resolution. We detected millimetre-scale movements partitioned between discrete surface rupture slip and development of a hangingwall syncline over 10's of meters. We interpret the results as the signal of shallow afterslip in the fault zone. We find 52% of the total postseismic hangingwall vertical motion occurs as deformation within 30 m of the surface rupture. The total postseismic vertical motions are approximately 50% that of the coseismic. We highlight the importance of quantifying partitioned postseismic contributions when applying empirical slip-magnitude datasets to infer palaeoearthquake magnitudes. Citation: Wilkinson, M., et al.
