Supramolecular functional materials represent an emerging class of materials that have been governed by the supramolecular chemistry of self-assembled molecules. Such high-order molecular hierarchies have been stabilized by various kinds of noncovalent intermolecular forces including hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, donor-acceptor, π-π stacking interactions, and dispersion forces. Recently, metal-metal interactions have also emerged as an unconventional type of noncovalent interaction that is unique in the metal complex system for the construction of self-assembled metal-based materials. These metal-metal interactions have further imparted the self-assembled materials with rich spectroscopic functionalities. However, the systematic control of these hierarchical architectures through metal-metal interactions remains challenging. In this Perspective, we aim to stimulate research direction in the field with the utilization of such intriguing and unique directional noncovalent metal-metal interactions as one of the driving forces, highlighting the roles and significance of metal-metal interactions and ultimately facilitating a controlled and rational design and synthesis of metallosupramolecular functional materials with rich spectroscopic properties and huge potential for various applications.

A series of carbazolyl ligands has been designed and synthesized through the integration of various electron-donating and electron-accepting motifs, including electron-donating 4-(diphenylamino)aryl and electron-accepting cyano and diphenylphosphine oxide moieties, for the development of a new class of gold(iii) complexes, where the energies of their triplet intraligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states can be manipulated for the activation of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Upon excitation, these complexes show high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 80% in solid-state thin films, with short excited state lifetimes down to 1 μs. Vacuum-deposited and solution-processed organic light-emitting devices based on these complexes demonstrate promising electroluminescence (EL) performance with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 15.0% and 11.7%, respectively, and notably small efficiency roll-off values of less than 1% at the practical luminance brightness level of 1000 cd m

A new class of yellow- to red-emitting carbazolylgold(III) complexes containing isomeric thienopyridine or thienoquinoline moieties in the cyclometalating ligand has been designed and synthesized, which showed high photoluminescence quantum yields of over 80% in solid-state thin films. The isomeric effect and extended π-conjugation of the N-heterocycles have been found to remarkably perturb the photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescence properties of the gold(III) complexes. In particular, the operational lifetimes of organic light-emitting devices based on that incorporated with thieno[2,3-c]pyridine are almost three orders of magnitude longer than that incorporated with thieno[3,2-c]pyridine. This has led to long device operational stability with a LT70 value of up to 63 200 h at a luminance of 100 cd m−2 and a long half-lifetime of 206 800 h, as well as maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 8.6% and 14.5% in the solution-processed and vacuum-deposited devices, respectively. This work provides insights into the development of robust and highly luminescent gold(III) complexes and the identification of stable molecular motifs for designing efficient emitters.

Platinum(II) complexes as supramolecular luminescent materials have received considerable attention due to their unique planar structures and fascinating photophysical properties. However, the molecular design of platinum(II) complexes with impressive circularly polarized luminescence properties still remains challenging and rarely explored. Herein, we reported a series of cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes with benzaldehyde and its derived imine-containing alkynyl ligands to investigate their phosphorescent, chiroptical, and self-assembly behaviors. An isodesmic growth mechanism is found for their temperature-dependent self-assembly process. The chiral sense of the enantiomers can be transferred from the chiral alkynyl ligands to the cyclometalated platinum(II) dipyridylbenzene N^C^N chromophore and further amplified through supramolecular assembly via intermolecular noncovalent interactions. Notably, distinctive phosphorescent properties and nanostructured morphologies have been found for enantiomers

Alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy complexes of trimethylammoniumbenzylethynyl ligand have been synthesized and characterized. Complexes with long alkyl chains have been found to exhibit interesting self-assembly properties in the acetonitrile solution. The amphiphilic nature of the complexes has led to the formation of nanorods, as revealed by electron microscopy experiments. In this work, through the introduction of different lengths of alkoxy chains to the dinuclear cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, the apparent color, solubility, luminescence properties, and self-assembly behaviors have been remarkably modulated. In the solid state, the luminescence properties have been found to arise from emission origins that switch between the 3MMLCT excited state in the red solids and the 3IL excited state in the yellow state, depending on the alkoxy chain lengths. The luminescence of the yellow solids is found to show obvious bathochromic shifts under mechanical grinding and decreased intensity under controllable hydrostatic pressure. However, the emission of the red solids exhibits both a bathochromic shift and reduced intensity due to the isotropic compression-induced shortening of the Pt···Pt and π-π distances. By combining the data obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR), and X-ray single crystal structure, a better understanding of the relationship between molecular aggregation and photophysical properties has been realized, suggesting that the length of the alkoxy chains plays an important role in governing the supramolecular assemblies.

A tetranuclear copper(I) complex, [Cu

A series of platinum(II) calix[4]arene-based molecular tweezers was synthesized. The studies of the host-guest association with a charge-neutral cyclometalated platinum(II) complex showed a drastic color change and the turning on of near-infrared emission resulting from Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt and π-π interactions. Control of the host-guest assembly process by varying the solvent composition can lead to a change from discrete host and guest molecules to high-ordered host-guest oligomers with the formation of sheet-like nanostructures, demonstrating a rare example of three-state supramolecular host-guest system with high solubility in solvents of diverse polarity. The change in host-guest assembly behaviors could be probed by drastic color changes from yellow to orange to green. The present study provides insights into the systematic design of solvent-responsive molecular materials using molecular tweezers-directed host-guest assembly, with potential applications in colorimetric sensing of changes in the micro-environment.

A cationic water-soluble dipicolylamine (DPA)-containing alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complex has been synthesized and employed as a dual-selective probe for the detection of cations and anions. The complex was shown to exhibit a strong binding affinity toward Zn2+, whereas the zinc-bound adduct was found to demonstrate the capability of recognizing pyrophosphate (PPi). As evidenced by molecular modeling and various spectroscopic and spectrometric studies, including HR-ESI mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, PXRD measurements, and UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, a PPi anion was found to be capable of bridging two zinc-bound complex molecules in a clip-shaped fashion, which was further oligomerized through intermolecular Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions to form nanofibers with a hexagonal columnar phase. This work provides important insights into not only the construction of aesthetically pleasing supramolecular architectures but also the multifunctional probes, which offer great promise to the fields of biosensing and chemical sensing.

Here, we report the design and synthesis of a new class of fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligand-containing gold(iii) complexes, which show tunable emission colors spanning from the yellow to red region in the solid state and exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties. These complexes display high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.87 and short excited-state lifetimes in sub-microsecond timescales, yielding high radiative decay rate constants on the order of up to 106 s−1. The observation of the drastic enhancement in the emission intensity of the complexes with insignificant change in the excited-state lifetime upon increasing the temperature from 200 to 360 K indicates an increasing radiative decay rate. The experimentally estimated energy splitting between the lowest-lying singlet excited state (S1) and the lowest-lying triplet excited state (T1), ΔES1–T1, is found to be as small as ∼0.03 eV (250 cm−1), comparable to the value of ∼0.05 eV (435 cm−1) obtained from computational studies. The delicate choice of the cyclometalating ligand and the fused heterocyclic ligand is deemed the key to induce TADF through the control of the energy levels of the intraligand and the ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excited states. This work represents the realization of highly emissive yellow- to red-emitting gold(iii) TADF complexes incorporated with fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligands and their applications in organic light-emitting devices., We report the design of a new class of fused heterocyclic alkynyl ligand-containing gold(iii) complexes, which shows tunable emission colors spanning yellow to red region and exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties.

A series of photochromic triethylene glycol (TEG)-containing spiropyrans (SPs) has been designed and synthesized. UV–Vis absorption and emission studies demonstrated that their photophysical and photochromic properties can be modulated by varying the linker group between the TEG and the SP components. TEG-containing SPs in THF–water mixtures were found to undergo solvent-induced ring-opening reactions without the need for photoirradiation, which could be attributed to the stabilization of the merocyanine (MC) form in polar solvents. Counterintuitively, a much slower thermal bleaching process of the open MC form has been observed in non-polar solvent media, possibly due to the stabilization of the zwitterionic open form through supramolecular self-assembly. Furthermore, the formation of spherical aggregates resulting from the planarized open MC form has been revealed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements. Such rational molecular designs, together with the tuning of the solvent polarity and controlled UV light irradiation, have led to the self-assembly of this class of TEG-containing spiropyran derivatives, achieving the systematic and controlled formation of self-assembled functional materials.

A new series of dinuclear anthracene-containing alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes exhibited intriguing photo-modulated self-assembly behaviors in solutions. Facilitated by Pt⋯Pt, π–π stacking and hydrophobic interactions, supramolecular assemblies have been formed in their DMSO solutions, featuring interesting spectroscopic responses accompanied by drastic color changes upon varying temperature, and distinct supramolecular nanostructures. Interestingly, these complexes can undergo photooxygenation upon UV excitation, which has been shown to alter their self-assembly behaviors, as revealed by the corresponding electron microscopic and DLS studies before and after photoirradiation.

A new class of C^C^N ligand-containing carbazolylgold(iii) dendrimers has been designed and synthesized. High photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 82% in solid-state thin films and large radiative decay rate constants in the order of 105 s−1 are observed. These gold(iii) dendrimers are found to exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), as supported by variable-temperature emission spectroscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence decay and computational studies. Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on these gold(iii) dendrimers have been fabricated, which exhibit a maximum current efficiency of 52.6 cd A−1, maximum external quantum efficiency of 15.8% and high power efficiency of 41.3 lm W−1. The operational stability of these OLEDs has also been recorded, with the devices based on zero- and second-generation dendrimers showing maximum half-lifetimes of 1305 and 322 h at 100 cd m−2, respectively, representing the first demonstration of operationally stable solution-processed OLEDs based on gold(iii) dendrimers., A new class of carbazolylgold(iii) C^C^N dendrimers with thermally activated delayed fluorescence properties has been designed and synthesized for the realzaqtion of operationally stable solution-processed organic light-emitting devices.

Capturing and converting solar energy into fuels and feedstocks is a global challenge that spans numerous disciplines and fields of research. Billions of years of evolution have allowed natural organisms to hone strategies for harvesting light from the sun and storing energy in the form of carbon–carbon and carbon–hydrogen bonds. Photosynthetic antenna proteins capture solar photons and funnel photoexcitations to reaction centres with high yields, and enzymes catalyze multi-electron reactions, facilitating chemical transformations not yet efficiently implemented using artificially engineered catalysts. Researchers in renewable energy often look to nature to understand the mechanisms at work and, if possible, to explore their translation into artificial systems. Here, we review advances in bioinspiration across the fields of biological light harvesting and chemical energy conversion. We examine how multi-photon and multi-electron reactions in biology can inspire new methods in photoredox chemistry to achieve novel, selective and complex organic transformations; how carbonic-dehydrogenase-inspired design principles enable catalytic reactions such as the conversion of CO2 into useful products such as fuels; and how concepts from photosynthetic antenna complexes and reaction centres can benefit artificial light-harvesting materials. We then consider areas in which bioinspiration could enable advances in the rational design of molecules and materials, the expansion of the synthetic capabilities of catalysts and the valorization of molecular building blocks. We highlight the challenges that must be overcome to realize these advances and propose new directions that may use bioinspiration to achieve them. Natural photosynthetic systems harvest light to perform selective chemistry on atmospheric molecules such as CO2. This Review discusses the implementation of bioinspired concepts in engineered light harvesting and catalysis.

Phosphorescent dopants are promising candidates for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Although it has been established that the out-coupling efficiency and overall performances of vacuum-deposited OLEDs can be significantly improved by a horizontal orientation of the dopants, no horizontally oriented gold(III) complexes have been reported to date. Herein, a novel class of tetradentate C^C^N^N ligand-containing gold(III) complexes with a preferential horizontal orientation successfully generated through a one-pot reaction is reported. These complexes demonstrate high photoluminescence quantum yields of 70 % and a high horizontal dipole ratio of 0.87 in solid-state thin films. Green-emitting OLEDs based on these complexes operate with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 20.6 % with an estimated out-coupling efficiency of around 30 %. A promising device stability has been achieved in the vacuum-deposited OLEDs, with operational half-lifetimes of around 37 500 h at 100 cd m-2 .

Here we report the first two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular polymer, which has varying structure and function arising from the perturbation of noncovalent metal···metal interactions in response to acid-base stimuli. This 2D assembly possesses a positively charged, honeycomb-like nanostructure consisting of trinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes appended with acid-sensitive dimethylamino groups. Upon addition of acids and bases, reversible switching mediated by protonation and deprotonation of dimethylamino and dimethylammonium moieties intrinsically alters the positive charge density of the constituent cationic units, which causes interior cavities to adaptively adjust their size, accompanied by drastic photoluminescence changes. When water molecules pass through the membranes obtained from 2D supramolecular polymers, the permeating flux can also be tuned by the pH values of the buffer media. This work paves the way toward supramolecularly engineered 2D smart materials with stimuli-responsive properties.

Molecular transition-metal–ligand complexes are emerging as useful paradigms in materials science. Transition metal complexes have diverse metal d electron configurations, oxidation states, coordination numbers and geometries such that they can undergo a diverse array of electronic transitions. Metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions and their associated excited states are especially attractive given their rich redox properties and robustness. This chemistry is accessible by appropriate choice of low-valence metal centres and strong π-acceptor ligands. An in-depth fundamental understanding of their charge-transfer, assembly and structure–property relationships is important to allow us to rationally design complexes and tune their characteristics for an intended application. In addition to their attractive light-harvesting and photocatalytic applications, this Perspective describes recent developments in the use of transition metal complexes as materials in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes and resistive memory devices. Metal–ligand complexes undergo diverse charge-transfer processes when stimulated by light or electric fields. This Perspective describes how these processes can be exploited in photosensitizers, luminophores and resistive memory materials.

A series of polynuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes of bis(diphenylphosphino)amine ligands has been synthesized and characterized. A rather small variation in the conformation of the bis(diphenylphosphino)amine ligands has led to distinct differences in the identity of the polynuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes formed. Unprecedented concentration-dependent and solvation-dependent reversible cluster-to-cluster transformation between a dodecanuclear gold(I) sulfido complex (LMe-Au12) and a hexanuclear gold(I) sulfido complex (LMe-Au6) has been observed. The transformation process has been monitored not only by 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy but also by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) in the solution state. This work has provided a simple approach to achieve structure modulation of gold(I) sulfido complexes and an understanding of supramolecular transformations via external stimuli.

The photophysical properties of a series of T‐shaped coinage d 10 metal complexes, supported by a bis(mesoionic carbene)carbazolide (CNC) pincer ligand, are explored. The series includes a rare new example of a tridentate T‐shaped AgI complex. Post‐complexation modification of the AuI complex provides access to a linear cationic AuI complex following ligand alkylation, or the first example of a cationic square planar AuIII−F complex from electrophilic attack on the metal centre. Emissions ranging from blue (CuI) to orange (AgI) are obtained, with variable contributions of thermally‐dependent fluorescence and phosphorescence to the observed photoluminescence. Green emissions are observed for all three gold complexes (neutral T‐shaped AuI, cationic linear AuI and square planar cationic AuIII). The higher quantum yield and longer decay lifetime of the linear gold(I) complex are indicative of increased phosphorescence contribution., T‐Shaped coinage‐metal complexes: Photoluminescence tuning mediated by a bis(mesoionic carbene)amido pincer ligand for d 10 complexes of unusual T‐shape, linear AuI and square planar AuIII.

A new class of sky-blue- to green-emitting carbazolylgold(III) C^C^N complexes containing pyrazole or benzimidazole moieties has been successfully designed and synthesized. Through the judicious choice of the N-heterocycles in the cyclometalating ligand and the tailor-made carbazole moieties, maximum photoluminescence quantum yields of 0.52 and 0.39 have been realized in the green- and sky-blue-emitting complexes, respectively. Solution-processed and vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on the benzimidazole-containing complexes have been prepared. The sky-blue-emitting device shows an emission peaking at 484 nm with a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 57 nm (2244 cm-1 ), demonstrating the potential of this class of complexes in the application of OLEDs with high color purity. In addition, high maximum external quantum efficiencies of 12.3 % and a long operational half-lifetime of over 5300 h at 100 cd m-2 have been achieved in the vacuum-deposited green-emitting devices.

A new class of alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy (bzimpy = bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) double complex salts (DCSs) containing dialkoxynaphthalene or pyromellitic diimide moieties on the alkynyl ligand has been reported to display distinct morphological properties compared to their precursor alkynylplatinum(II) complexes, with the capability of being aligned by the directional Pt···Pt and/or π-π stacking interactions. The incorporation of donor and acceptor units on the alkynyl ligands has been found to significantly perturb the alignment of the oppositely charged complex ions in the DCSs to stack in a twisted head-to-head manner, attributed to the additional driving forces of electrostatic and donor-acceptor interactions. The modulation of the Pt···Pt distances and the extent of aggregate formation have been demonstrated by altering the charge matching between the platinum(II) bzimpy moieties and the donor or acceptor moieties on the alkynyl ligand.

Here, we report the use of an amphiphilic Pt(II) complex, K[Pt{(O3SCH2CH2CH2)2bzimpy}Cl] (PtB), as a model to elucidate the key role of Pt···Pt interactions in directing self-assembly by combining temperature-dependent ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, stopped-flow kinetic experiments, quantum mechanics (QM) calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Interestingly, we found that the self-assembly mechanism of PtB in aqueous solution follows a nucleation-free isodesmic model, as revealed by the temperature-dependent UV-Vis experiments. In contrast, a cooperative growth is found for the self-assembly of PtB in acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution, which is further verified by the stopped-flow experiments, which clearly indicates the existence of a nucleation phase in the acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution. To reveal the underlying reasons and driving forces for these self-assembly processes, we performed QM calculations and show that the Pt···Pt interactions arising from the interaction between the pz and dz2 orbitals play a crucial role in determining the formation of ordered self-assembled structures. In subsequent oligomer MD simulations, we demonstrate that this directional Pt···Pt interaction can indeed facilitate the formation of linear structures packed in a helix-like fashion. Our results suggest that the self-assembly of PtB in acetone–water (7:1, vol/vol) solution is predominantly driven by the directional noncovalent Pt···Pt interaction, leading to the cooperative growth and the formation of fibrous nanostructures. On the contrary, the self-assembly in aqueous solution forms spherical nanostructures of PtB, which is primarily due to the predominant contribution from the less directional hydrophobic interactions over the directional Pt···Pt and π−π interactions that result in an isodesmic growth.

A new series of four-coordinate boron compounds bearing a photochromic dithienylethene-containing C^C ligand and an ancillary N^C ligand have been successfully designed and synthesised. These compounds exhibit reversible photochromism upon photoexcitation with percentage conversions of 71-96% and readily tuneable photocycloreversion quantum yields by convenient modification of the ancillary ligand to turn on the thermally activated upconversion from the lower-lying unreactive excited state to the higher-lying photoreactive excited state.

A series of alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes and alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine-containing conjugated polymers with different polymer backbones has been synthesized, and their spectroscopic properties and Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) processes has been investigated. The platinum(II)-containing polymers exhibit dual emissive features with emission maxima at ca. 416-465 nm and ca. 671-673 nm, which are assigned to be originated from singlet intraligand (1IL) excited states from the polymer backbone and triplet metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MMLCT) excited states from the platinum(II) pendants, respectively. The Förster radii (R0) of the platinum(II)-containing conjugated polymers have been determined, and their distinctive thermo-responsive luminescence changes have also been observed. The present work has demonstrated the utilization of “click” reaction for the preparation of platinum(II)-containing conjugated polymers, which show unique photophysical and spectroscopic properties. Through the judicious design, this type of platinum(II)-containing polymer is found to be sensitive to temperature, resulting in ratiometric emission changes. This study has provided valuable insights into the preparation of metal-containing polymeric systems for different applications.

A series of arylgold(III) complexes of tridentate diphenylpyridine ligand incorporated with fluorene and its heterocyclic spiro derivatives, spiro[fluorene-9,9'-xanthene] and spiro[acridine-9,9'-fluorene], as auxiliary ligands has been prepared. This class of complexes exhibits high decomposition temperatures of up to 387 °C, excellent film morphologies in solid-state thin films with a root-mean-square roughness smaller than 0.20 nm, as well as high photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.72 in solid-state thin films. Solution-processed organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) fabricated from this series of complexes as dopants show intense electroluminescence in the sky-blue region with maximum external quantum efficiencies of 10.0%. Taking advantage of their high thermal stability, vacuum-deposited OLEDs have also been fabricated and satisfactory operational lifetimes of ∼300 h have been recorded.

Self-assembly of three-dimensional (3D) metallosupramolecular cages has drawn increasing attention for their potential to interconvert between different architectures due to the dynamic and reversible features of the coordination bond. These supramolecular transformations can provide unique approaches for the construction of stimuli-responsive supramolecular model systems to mimic biological transformation processes. While gold(I) clusters have attracted much interest due to their propensity to exhibit aurophilic interactions, the construction of 3D gold(I) cluster cages has remained a challenging and daunting task. Here, we proposed a "de-aurophilic" interaction strategy, which involves the prevention of aurophilic interaction formation between the basic [(μ3-S)Au3]+ units, to construct 3D gold(I) cluster cages. Through the judicious design of diphosphine ligands, an unprecedented class of gold(I) cluster cages with adaptive structures has been constructed. These gold(I) cluster cages are found to show intriguing stimuli-responsive structure transformation and interconversion. This work not only provides a strategy for the design and construction of novel 3D supramolecular cages based on cluster nodes but also offers a paradigm to study the stimuli-responsive structural interconversion between the unique structures of these gold(I) cluster cages.

A series of heteroleptic cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes, [Pt(C^N)(O^O)], (1-10) with various donors and acceptors has been synthesized and characterized by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The X-ray structure of 2 has also been determined. The electrochemical and photophysical properties of the platinum(II) complexes were studied. These experimental results have been supported by computational studies. Furthermore, two of the complexes have been employed as the active material in the fabrication of resistive memory devices, exhibiting stable binary memory performance with low operating voltage, high ON/OFF ratio and long retention time.
