4. Phase transition between two different orientations of the Q phase in the NaNbO$_3$ thin film

Abstract

Temperature evolution of dielectric response, atomic structure, and lattice dynamics in thin film of sodium niobate in the epitaxial NaNbO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$/(001)MgO heterostructure is studied by dielectric measurements, x-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that at room temperature NaNbO$_3$ is in ferroelectric state, whereas the temperature-dependent dielectric constant experiences a broad maximum at 440~K on cooling and at 500~K on heating and reveals a diffuse phase transition. Reciprocal space mapping shows the presence of both anti-phase and in-phase tilting of oxygen octahedra. The temperature dependence of the M-point reflections suggests reorientation of the in-phase octahedra tilting axis from being parallel to the substrate at room temperature to perpendicular orientation at high temperatures. The temperature evolution of the shape of the Raman spectra reveal the decrease of the number of constituting peaks on heating. These results are interpreted as indicating a temperature-driven transition between two different orientations of the bulk ferroelectric Q phase with respect to the interface, namely between the state with electric polarization pointing at $\approx45^{\rm o}$ to the normal at room temperature to the state with polarization parallel to the interface above the transition. Abstract

The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2sigma., Comment: Submitted to Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (PTEP)

Abstract

The OPERA long-baseline neutrino-oscillation experiment has observed the direct appearance of $\nu_\tau$ in the CNGS $\nu_\mu$ beam. Two large muon magnetic spectrometers are used to identify muons produced in the $\tau$ leptonic decay and in $\nu_\mu^{CC}$ interactions by measuring their charge and momentum. Besides the kinematic analysis of the $\tau$ decays, background resulting from the decay of charmed particles produced in $\nu_\mu^{CC}$ interactions is reduced by efficiently identifying the muon track. A new method for the charge sign determination has been applied, via a weighted angular matching of the straight track-segments reconstructed in the different parts of the dipole magnets. Results obtained for Monte Carlo and real data are presented. Comparison with a method where no matching is used shows a significant reduction of up to 40\% of the fraction of wrongly determined charges., Comment: 10 pages. Improvements in the text

Abstract

The OPERA experiment, designed to perform the first observation of $\nu_\mu \rightarrow \nu_\tau$ oscillations in appearance mode through the detection of the $\tau$ leptons produced in $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions, has collected data from 2008 to 2012. In the present paper, the procedure developed to detect $\tau$ particle decays, occurring over distances of the order of 1 mm from the neutrino interaction point, is described in detail. The results of its application to the search for charmed hadrons are then presented as a validation of the methods for $\nu_\tau$ appearance detection.

Abstract

The OPERA detector, designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \to \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in the CNGS beam, is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory, a privileged location to study TeV-scale cosmic rays. For the analysis here presented, the detector was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV region. OPERA collected charge-separated cosmic ray data between 2008 and 2012. More than 3 million atmospheric muon events were detected and reconstructed, among which about 110000 multiple muon bundles. The charge ratio $R_{\mu} \equiv N_{\mu^+}/N_{\mu^-}$ was measured separately for single and for multiple muon events. The analysis exploited the inversion of the magnet polarity which was performed on purpose during the 2012 Run. The combination of the two data sets with opposite magnet polarities allowed minimizing systematic uncertainties and reaching an accurate determination of the muon charge ratio. Data were fitted to obtain relevant parameters on the composition of primary cosmic rays and the associated kaon production in the forward fragmentation region. In the surface energy range 1-20 TeV investigated by OPERA, $R_{\mu}$ is well described by a parametric model including only pion and kaon contributions to the muon flux, showing no significant contribution of the prompt component. The energy independence supports the validity of Feynman scaling in the fragmentation region up to $200$ TeV/nucleon primary energy., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation of the $\tau$ lepton in $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two $\nu_{\tau}$ candidates with a $\tau$ decaying into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third $\nu_\tau$ candidate in the $\tau^-\to\mu^-$ decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 $\sigma$ level., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 tables

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the $\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau$ channel, via the detection of the $\tau$-leptons created in charged current $\nu_\tau$ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first $\nu_\tau$ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional $\nu_\tau$ candidate has been observed. Abstract

A first result of the search for \numu $\rightarrow$ \nue oscillations in the OPERA experiment, located at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory, is presented. The experiment looked for the appearance of \nue in the CNGS neutrino beam using the data collected in 2008 and 2009. Data are compatible with the non-oscillation hypothesis in the three-flavour mixing model. A further analysis of the same data constrains the non-standard oscillation parameters $\theta_{new}$ and $\Delta m^2_{new}$ suggested by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments. For large $\Delta m^{2}_{new}$ values ($>$0.1 eV$^{2}$), the OPERA 90% C.L. upper limit on sin$^{2}(2\theta_{new})$ based on a Bayesian statistical method reaches the value $7.2 \times 10^{-3}$.

Abstract

In spring 2012 CERN provided two weeks of a short bunch proton beam dedicated to the neutrino velocity measurement over a distance of 730 km. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory used an upgraded setup compared to the 2011 measurements, improving the measurement time accuracy. An independent timing system based on the Resistive Plate Chambers was exploited providing a time accuracy of $\sim$1 ns. Neutrino and anti-neutrino contributions were separated using the information provided by the OPERA magnetic spectrometers. The new analysis profited from the precision geodesy measurements of the neutrino baseline and of the CNGS/LNGS clock synchronization. The neutrino arrival time with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum is found to be $\delta t_\nu \equiv TOF_c - TOF_\nu= (0.6 \pm 0.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.0\ (syst.))$ ns and $\delta t_{\bar{\nu}} \equiv TOF_c - TOF_{\bar{\nu}} = (1.7 \pm 1.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.1\ (syst.))$ ns for $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$, respectively. This corresponds to a limit on the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light of $-1.8 \times 10^{-6} < (v_{\nu}-c)/c < 2.3 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6.5 +/- 7.4(stat.)((+8.3)(-8.0)sys.))ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v-c)/c =(2.7 +/-3.1(stat.)((+3.4)(-3.3)(sys.))x10^(-6). Abstract

The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

Summary Obesity is associated with an increased risk of cancer development in the upper gastrointestinal tract. One own case of a female patient with gastric carcinoma after sleeve gastrectomy was the reason to review the literature about the frequency and the genesis of gastric carcinoma after bariatric surgery. Additional to our case 3 further patients with gastric carcinoma after sleeve gastrectomy and 33 patients with carcinomas of the upper gastrointestinal tract after other bariatric operations are reported in the literature. Due to a lack of registry studies the incidence of gastric cancer after bariatric surgery cannot be calculated. Early diagnostics should be performed in symptomatic patients and in patients with unspecific symptoms after bariatric surgery to avoid a delay of the diagnosis of potential carcinomas of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract

The mean-variance (MV) portfolio optimization targets higher return for investment period despite the unknown stochastic behavior of the future asset returns. That is why a risk is explicitly considering, quantified by algebraic characteristics of volatilities and co-variances. A new probabilistic definition of portfolio risk is the Value at Risk (VaR). The paper makes explicit inclusion and minimization of VaR as a quantitative measure of financial sustainability of a portfolio problem. Thus, the portfolio weights as problem solutions will respect not only the MV requirements for risk and return, but also the additional minimization of risk defined by VaR level. The portfolio problem is defined in a new, bi-level form. The upper level minimizes and evaluates the VaR value. The lower level evaluates the optimal assets weights by minimizing portfolio risk and maximizing the return in MV form. The bi-level model allows to have extended set of portfolio solutions with the portfolio weights and the value of VaR. Graphical interpretation of this bi-level definition of the portfolio problem explains the differences with the MV portfolio definition. Thus, the bi-level portfolio problem evaluates the optimal weights, which makes maximization of portfolio return and minimization of the risk in its algebraic and probabilistic form of definition.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6:5 ± 7:4 (stat:) +8.34 -8.0(sys:)) ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v - c)=c = (2:7 ± 3:1 (stat:) +3.4 -3:3 (sys:)) × 10 -6.
