Abstract

Background: Paclobutrazol (PBZ), a plant growth regulator, is usually used to promote off-season flowering in mango orchards in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Several studies demonstrated that PBZ degradation in the soil takes several months and its residue effects to the soil environment and consequently to the plants and microorganism community. The objective of this study was to identify native bacteria that can biodegrade PBZ in the soil of mango orchards. Methods: Soil samples were collected in thirty mango orchards in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. One gram of soil was mixed with distilled water and injected into a PBZ culture medium. After culturing, bacterial colonies were isolated and transferred onto the TSA medium in order to characterize morphological and biochemical assays and to evaluate PBZ biodegradation ability. Four strains of bacteria, which had high PBZ biodegradation, were identified and evaluated PBZ biodegradation ability. Additionally, 16S rDNA region was sequenced. Result: The results of identification indicated that the four high PBZ biodegradation bacterial strains related to Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas nitroreducens, Burkholderia cepacia, Acinetobacter seifertii. After 30 days, the content of paclobutrazol biodegradable by these bacteria was 36.51%, 36.23%, 34.19% and 33.56%, respectively, at an initial concentration of 60 ppm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have studied via in-beam $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy $^{196}$Po and $^{198}$Po, which are the first neutron-deficient Po isotopes to exhibit a collective low-lying structure. The ratios of yrast state energies and the E2 branching ratios of transitions from non-yrast to yrast states are indicative of a low-lying vibrational structure. The onset of collective motion in these isotopes can be attributed to the opening of the neutron i$_{13/2}$ orbital at N$\approx$112 and the resulting large overlap between the two valence protons in the h$_{9/2}$ orbital and the valence neutrons in the i$_{13/2}$ orbital., Comment: (accepted by Phys. Abstract

Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) is a critical condition, which frequently leads to hospitalization or mortality. European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and Asia-Pacific Working Group consensus on the Management of Patients with Non-variceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding (ICON-UGIB) has provided comprehensive guidelines for diagnosis and management of NVUGIB. The aims of this study were to determine to rate of appropriate indications for treatment of patients with NVUGIB and whether the use of recommended resuscitative measures and drugs contribute to the improvement of patients. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using medical records of in-patients diagnosed with NVUGIB from 1st January 2016 and 30th Jun 2016 at Thong Nhat hospital, Vietnam. Patients' clinical characteristics, endoscopic profiles, and treatments were recorded. The Glasgow Blatchford score was evaluated without endoscopic findings, whereas Forrest classification is based on endoscopic findings of an ulcer. The rational treatment of NVUGIB was evaluated based on European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2015) and Asia-Pacific Working Group consensus on NVUGUB (2011). There were 98 patients of median age 59.9 years, and 33.7% of them had peptic ulcer disease. Most patients were male (65.3%). Appropriate indications of blood transfusion (OR 19.74, 95%CI 2.00 - 194.45, p=0.011), endoscopic hemostasis (OR 19.61, 95%CI 1.54 - 250.00, p=0.019), post-endoscopy PPI (OR 40.27, 95%CI 4.56 - 355.85, p=0.001), and acid tranexamic (OR 4.06, 95%CI 1.07 - 15.43, p=0.039) were associated with improvement of patient outcomes. Amelioration of NVUGIB patients depends on the rational indications of blood transfusion, endoscopic haemostasis, and PPIs. Abstract

New measurements are presented from the LANL-NIST micorcalorimeter array for two standard plutonium sources. The results demonstrate substantially smaller error bars obtained from the spectral analysis program FRAM. Some areas of improvement to the analysis technique have been identified, indicating that the microcalorimeter results can be improved upon. Abstract

We present results from the largest array of gamma-ray microcalorimeters operated to date. The microcalorimeters consist of Mo/Cu transition-edge sensors with attached Sn absorbers. The detector array contains 66 pixels each with an active area 2.25 mm2. Out of 66 pixels, 55 are active, and 31 were used to acquire a high statistics Pu gamma-ray spectrum. The energy resolution of the best 21 pixels was found to be 120 eV FWHM. The array is read out using time domain SQUID multiplexing. Here, we describe the multiplexing and present a high statistics Pu spectra. Because of the large collecting area of our array, the statistical error in the 240Pu line intensity is approximately 0.7%, which is comparable to the systematic error in a measurement with a 500 eV germanium sensor. Hence, we have reached an important threshold for demonstrating improved isotopic measurements with microcalorimeter sensors. With straightforward changes, we plan to achieve a resolution of about 50 eV FWHM with 256 multiplexed detectors. Finally, we present early estimates of on-chip heating within our sensor array. Abstract

Background: Arginine vasopressin (AVP) has received increased attention in equine critical care but there is minimal information of AVP concentration in foals. The clinical usefulness of measuring AVP in ill foals depends on knowledge of age-related changes in AVP concentrations in healthy foals. Hypothesis: Plasma AVP concentrations will be significantly different when measured from birth to 3 months of age in healthy foals. Animals: Thirteen healthy university-owned foals. Methods: Prospective, observational study. Blood was collected from healthy foals at birth and 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 42, 56, and 84 days of age. Plasma was harvested and plasma AVP concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay. Results: No statistically significant differences were detected in plasma AVP concentrations over the study period. Plasma AVP concentrations over the entire study period was 6.2 ± 2.5 pg/mL. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: There was no age-related variation in plasma AVP concentrations detected in healthy foals from birth to 3 months of age suggesting that AVP concentrations are similar across foals of these ages. Abstract

The authors present a prototype for a high-energy-resolution, high-count-rate, gamma-ray spectrometer intended for nuclear forensics and international nuclear safeguards. The prototype spectrometer is an array of 14 transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters with an average energy resolution of 47 eV (full width at half maximum) at 103 keV. The resolution of the best pixel is 25 eV. A cryogenic, time-division multiplexer reads out the array. Several important topics related to microcalorimeter arrays are discussed, including cross-talk, the uniformity of detector bias conditions, fabrication of the arrays, and the multiplexed readout. The measurements and calculations demonstrate that a kilopixel array of high-resolution microcalorimeters is feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
