This paper presents an experimental investigation conducted to determine the influence of parameters such as the ambient temperature, pollution level, and substrate material on the formation of dry bands on polluted layers. To investigate these parameters, we applied a simplified insulator geometry, developed in our previous work, to experimentally control the complex process of dry band formation on a polluted surface. The simple geometry of the experimental model enabled the use of Plexiglas, RTV, and glass as construction substrate materials. RTV and glass were used to simulate a composite and ceramic insulator surface, respectively. Moreover, an electrooptic (EO) probe enabled the measurement of the axial E-field evolution at the surface of the dry band during dry band formation. The results indicated that the substrate material, ambient temperature, and pollution level substantially influence dry band formation. The effects of the first two parameters are directly associated with heat transfer phenomena in the substrate material and at the ambient air/substrate interface. The effect of the third parameter is associated with absorption and evaporation of the pollution layer. In addition, the appearance of the dry band can be clearly identified by a rapid increase in both the pollution layer resistance and the axial E-field in the dry band area. The value of the axial E-field is influenced primarily by the width of the dry band and by the pollution layer resistance, which is directly dependent on the humidification duration. Finally, because most of the results obtained herein were in accordance with those in the literature, we conclude that the proposed experimental model may provide an effective and inexpensive testing method for developing new materials and solutions for improving the dielectric performance of insulators used in polluted environments. Similarly, the simple geometry of the experimental model and the ability to easily control the experimental parameters may enable this tool to validate the results of various numerical models in studies of the thermoelectrical behavior of polluted insulators. This paper presents a numerical investigation regarding the possibility of using electrically conductive concrete (ECON) combined with concrete-encased electrode (CEE) technology to develop new substation grounding systems (SGSs) called ECON-EE as a replacement for conventional copper or galvanized steel grounding grids. In the first step, the validation of the commercial FEM software used to perform grounding system analysis was performed in terms of the grid resistance (RG), ground potential rise (GPR), and step and touch voltages, using a symmetrical 70 m × 70 m conventional copper SGS. Next, several numerical simulations of an ECON-EE grounding system with the same dimensions as the conventional copper grid used for FEM software validation were performed. Thus, several parameters of the ECON-EE grounding system were studied, such as the geometry, dimensions, and resistivity of ECON and the diameter of the rebar. The numerical results obtained permit us to demonstrate that ECON-EE grounding systems can perform better than conventional SGSs equipped with vertical rods, particularly in the case of high ground resistivity. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the two main ECON-EE parameters affecting the grounding resistance and the touch and step voltages are the section area and the resistivity of the ECON. As discussed in detail in this paper, the proposed ECON-EE grounding system can offer several advantages compared to conventional SGSs in terms of efficiency and durability, as well as in terms of simplicity of conception and implementation. This paper introduces a new geometry for the study of dry band formation. Firstly, a thermoelectric simulation of a 69 kV uniformly polluted composite insulator was performed. The results obtained show that thermal stress is greater at the rod surface where current density is maximum. In order to experimentally reproduce the constriction of current density lines on the insulator rod surface, which is the cause of dry band formation, the development of a new simple geometric setup, which was then tested experimentally, was proposed. For this purpose, an ESDD value corresponding to a high level of pollution was used for each polluted sample, and the samples were placed in a climate chamber at constant 90% relative humidity and a constant ambient temperature of 20 °C. Low-voltage tests permitted the determination of the wetting duration, which corresponds to the maximum surface conductance of the polluted layer. The values obtained agree with the 10–40 min duration recommended in IEC 60507. Moreover, the tests performed at a higher voltage demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed setup to simulate the complex process of dry band formation in a reproducible way in terms of leakage current and temperature behavior. The proposed setup is a new and simple method that can be easily used by the electrical industry to develop new material for the next generation of overhead line composite insulators without requiring costly HV equipment. This paper presents results based on direct experimental measurements of tangential (Et) and normal (En) E-field components along the stress grading system (SGS) of a real stator bar (Roebel type) for different AC 60 Hz applied voltages. These measurements were made with a new electro-optic system allowing for the study of both spatial distributions of two E-field components along the bar and their temporal evolution at critical points. The results obtained allowed us to calculate the correlation between the distribution of En and Et along the SGS. In particular, it was demonstrated that the En distribution presents a characteristic minimum, which can be used to identify the zone of partial discharge inception. Moreover, it was possible to observe an enlargement of the Et component distribution followed by a saturation in magnitude with the applied voltage increase. Moreover, the results have demonstrated that the waveform of the En component is mostly affected by the SG material used, producing a greater distortion in its waveform than those obtained for the Et component. The more significant distortion was obtained at the end of the outer corona protection (OCP) material, corresponding to the first maximum of the En component and characterized by the appearance of a third harmonic of large amplitude. This paper investigates the influence of arc velocity and propagation criteria on the parameters of a dynamic numerical mono-arc model used to predict flashover voltage of ice-covered insulators. For that purpose, a generic algorithm has been developed which, coupled with a Finite Element commercial software, permits us to solve the mono-arc Obenaus equation. The versatility of the proposed algorithm allows to implement three different arc propagation criteria and five different arc velocity criteria, as well as to compute the corresponding flashover voltage, arc velocity and leakage current. This paper presents the development of a new bi-arc dynamic numerical model for predicting AC critical flashover voltage (FOV) of ice-covered extra-high voltage (EHV) insulators. The proposed model is based on a generic calculation algorithm coupled with commercial finite element method software designed to solve the Obenaus/Rizk model. The proposed model allows one to implement the Nottingham and Mayr approaches and compare the results obtained as a function of the arcing distance, the freezing water conductivity, and the initial arc length. The validation of the model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting the FOV of ice-covered post-type insulators and its capability to simulate the interaction of the two partial arcs during the flashover process. In particular, the results showed that the Nottingham approach is sensibly more accurate than the Mayr one, especially in simulating the dynamic behavior of the partial arcs during the flashover process. Based on the encouraging results obtained, a multi-arc calculation algorithm was proposed using the bi-arc dynamic numerical model as a basis. The basic idea, which consists in dividing the multi-arc model in several bi-arc modules, was not implemented and validated but will serve as a promising concept for future work. Drones and UAVs are gaining worldwide popularity and are now considered a popular choice for both military and commercial applications. Icing poses tremendous safety and performance concerns for the operation of all types of drones. This paper is part of a project that studies icing effects on the hovering 0.66 m diameter Bell APT70 drone rotor and the development of potential ice protection systems. The objective of this paper is to investigate the use of electrothermal heaters with severe icing conditions and to characterize the energy efficiency of anti-icing or de-icing regimes. Rotor speeds of 3880, 4440 and 4950 RPM were used while two air temperatures, −5 and −12 °C, were also tested. The heat transfer profile on the blade was studied using dry run tests where the rotor operated with heating but without water spray. Anti-icing tests with variable heating power were tested to determine the location of the initial ice accumulation as well as the minimum heating power requirement to protect the leading edge. Moreover, anti-icing tests with constant heating rates were done and compared to previous tests of unprotected blades, under similar condition. On the other hand, de-icing tests with various heating cycles were also carried out. Results indicate that although de-icing requires significantly less heating energy compared to anti-icing, there is clear trade-off on rotor stable aerodynamic output, electrical power consumption and vibration levels, depending on the adopted de-icing mode. Future work is about investigating the rise of secondary effects, such as shed ice impact due to de-icing. To lower the ice adhesion strength is the most efficient technique for passive ice removal for several applications. In this paper, the effect of different types of ice on the ice adhesion strength was investigated. The ice types precipitation ice, in-cloud ice and bulk water ice on the same aluminum substrate and under similar environmental conditions were investigated. The ice adhesion strength was measured with a centrifugal adhesion test and varied from 0.78 ± 0.10 MPa for precipitation ice, 0.53 ± 0.12 MPa for in-cloud ice to 0.28 ± 0.08 MPa for bulk water ice. The results indicate that the ice adhesion strength inversely correlates with the density of ice. The results inspire a new strategy in icephobic surface development, specifically tailored to the relevant ice type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new installation at the Anti-Icing Materials International Laboratory was developed to study the effects of icing on the degradation of a hovering drone rotor aerodynamic performance and to test different potential ice protection solutions. Following a study on icing parameters effects on aerodynamic performance, this paper studies a methodology developed to assess the performances of coatings as a potential ice protection system under severe icing conditions and rotor speeds up to 4950 RPM. Four different coatings, commercial or under development, were applied to the rotor blades and their effect on the resulting ice accumulation and aerodynamic degradation were measured and compared to those previously obtained on similar, uncoated blades. Results show that passive icephobic coatings in general are a promising solution to limit the negative effect of icing conditions for drone applications, without any additional energy consumption from the system. Moreover, the repeatability assessment of tests under similar conditions and for the same coating showed agreement within ±5% between repetitions, showing no signs of ice protection efficiency degradation for any of the tested coatings. • The work of this article marks the continuity of a series of studies done with a new spinning rotor drone test setup in hover flight mode performed at the 9-m high cold chamber of the Anti-Icing Materials International Laboratory (AMIL). Four different surface protection coatings are applied on their own set of blades for testing in the cold room. The resulting ice accumulation and performance degradation of the spinning rotor are then monitored, recorded and compared to the results obtained of bare uncoated blades. The effects and performances of the coatings tested are then assessed. • This report presents a new test methodology and setup to assess the performances of protective surfaces as a passive ice protection system for small and medium drone rotors, which differs than for the rotorcraft application actually found in the literature. It also presented unique results on the possibility of using those surfaces for drones, which cannot be simply deduced from rotorcraft studies found in the literature. This demonstrates the importance of this work and of this new methodology and test setup for the industry since the literature greatly lacks reported data of similar icing tests using ice protection coatings on a UAV. • This first test campaign has proven the ability of icephobic surface coatings to efficiently perform as ice protection systems. Moreover, coatings have a positive potential of being combined with an active ice protection system (such as electrothermal) as a way to reduce the power consumption of those systems. Frequency response analysis (FRA) is being employed worldwide as one of the main methods for the internal condition assessment of transformers due to its capability of detecting mechanical changes. Nonetheless, the objective interpretation of FRA measurements is still a challenge for the industry. This is mainly attributable to the lack of complete data from the same or similar units. A large database of FRA measurements can contribute to improving classification algorithms and lead to a more objective interpretation. Due to their destructive nature, mechanical deformations cannot be performed on real transformers to collect data from different scenarios. The use of simulation and laboratory transformer models is necessary. This research contribution is based on a new method using Finite Element Method simulation and a lumped element circuit to obtain FRA traces from a laboratory model at healthy and faulty states, along with an optimization method to improve capacitive parameters from estimated values. The results show that measured and simulated FRA traces are in good agreement. Furthermore, the faulty FRA traces were analyzed to obtain the characterization of faults based on the variation of the lumped element's parameters. This supports the use of the proposed method in the generation of faulty frequency response traces and its further use in classifying and localizing faults in the transformer windings. The proposed approach is therefore tailored for generating a larger and unique database of FRA traces with industrial importance and academic significance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we illustrate the ability of electrooptic sensors to perform electric (E)-field vectorial measurements. Thanks to their frequency response spreading over nine decades and to their measurement dynamics reaching 120 dB, these sensors are of high interest for some applications (near field mapping, energy line monitoring, electromagnetic compatibility, and so on). Furthermore, due to their fully dielectric structure and millimetric size, almost no perturbation is induced on the E-field to be measured, even in the near field region. This paper is focused on high-intensity pulsed E-field characterization in different environments such as air, water (bioelectromagnetism applications), or plasmas (in situ assessment of the E-field associated to an electric discharge and to the induced plasma).
