Chirality is probably the most mysterious among all symmetry transformations. Very readily broken in biological systems, it is practically absent in naturally occurring inorganic materials and is very challenging to create artificially. Chiral optical wavefronts are often used for the identification, control and discrimination of left- and right-handed biological and other molecules. Thus, it is crucially important to create materials capable of chiral interaction with light, which would allow one to assign arbitrary chiral properties to a light field. In this paper, we utilized van der Waals technology to assemble helical homostructures with chiral properties (e. g. circular dichroism). Because of the large range of van der Waals materials available such helical homostructures can be assigned with very flexible optical properties. We demonstrate our approach by creating helical homostructures based on multilayer As$_2$S$_3$, which offers the most pronounced chiral properties even in thin structures due to its strong biaxial optically anisotropy. Our work showcases that the chirality of an electromagnetic system may emerge at an intermediate level between the molecular and the mesoscopic one due to the tailored arrangement of non-chiral layers of van der Waals crystals and without additional patterning.

Polaritons in strongly anisotropic thin layers have recently captured the attention in nanophotonics because of their directional propagation at the nanoscale, which offers unique possibilities for nanooptical applications. However, exploiting the full potential of anisotropic polaritons requires a thorough understanding of their properties, including field confinement, energy and phase propagation direction and losses. Here we fill this critical gap by providing fundamental insights into the propagation of anisotropic polaritons in thin biaxial layers. In particular, we introduce a novel methodology that allows us to represent isofrequency curves of polaritons in strongly anisotropic materials considering that the real and imaginary parts of the wavevector are not parallel. In fact, we analytically show that the direction of the imaginary part of the wavevector is parallel to the group velocity, which can have different, even perpendicular or opposite, directions with respect to the phase velocity. This finding is crucial for understanding polaritonic phenomena in anisotropic media, yet it has so far been widely overlooked in the literature. Additionally, we introduce a criterion for classifying the polaritonic modes in biaxial layers into volume and surface categories, and analyze their dispersion, field structure, and losses. Finally, we discover the existence of anisotropic transverse electric modes, which can exhibit natural canalization. Taken together, our results shed light on hitherto unexplored areas of the theory of electromagnetic modes in thin biaxial layers. With the advance of on-chip nanophotonics, there is a high demand for high refractive index, low-loss materials. Currently, this technology is dominated by silicon, but van der Waals (vdW) materials with high refractive index can offer a very advanced alternative. Still, up to now it was not clear if the optical anisotropy perpendicular to the layers might be a hindering factor for the development of vdW nanophotonics. Here, we studied WS2-based waveguides in terms of their optical properties and, particularly, in terms of possible crosstalk distance. Surprisingly, we discovered that the low refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the atomic layers improves the characteristics of such devices, mainly due to expanding the range of parameters at which single-mode propagation can be achieved. A global trend to miniaturization and multiwavelength performance of nanophotonic devices drives research on novel phenomena, such as bound states in the continuum and Mietronics, as well as the survey for high-refractive index and strongly anisotropic materials and metasurfaces. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is one of promising materials for the future nanophotonics owing to its inherent anisotropy and prospects of high-quality monocrystals growth with atomically flat surface. Here, we present highly accurate optical constants of hBN in the broad wavelength range of 250-1700 nm combining the imaging ellipsometry measurements scanning near-field optical microscopy and first-principle quantum mechanical computations. hBN's high refractive index, up to 2.75 in ultraviolet (UV) and visible range, broadband birefringence of 0.7, and negligible optical losses make it an outstanding material for UV and visible range photonics. Based on our measurement results, we propose and design novel optical elements: handedness-preserving mirrors and subwavelength waveguides with dimensions of 40 nm operating in the visible and UV range, respectively. Optical nanoresonators are fundamental building blocks in a number of nanotechnology applications (e.g. in spectroscopy) due to their ability to efficiently confine light at the nanoscale. Recently, nanoresonators based on the excitation of phonon polaritons (PhPs) $-$ light coupled to lattice vibrations $-$ in polar crystals (e.g. SiC, or h-BN) have attracted much attention due to their strong field confinement, high-quality factors, and potential to enhance the photonic density of states at mid-infrared (IR) frequencies. Here, we go one step further by introducing PhPs nanoresonators that not only exhibit these extraordinary properties but also incorporate a new degree of freedom $-$ twist tuning, i.e. the possibility to be spectrally controlled by a simple rotation. To that end, we both take advantage of the low-loss in-plane hyperbolic propagation of PhPs in the van der Waals crystal $\alpha$-MoO$_3$, and realize dielectric engineering of a pristine $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ slab placed on top of metal ribbon grating, which preserves the high-quality of the polaritonic resonances. By simple rotating the $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ slab in the plane (from 0 to 45$^{\circ}$), we demonstrate via far- and near-field measurements that the narrow polaritonic resonances (with quality factors Q up to 200) can be tuned in a broad range (up to 32 cm$^{-1}$, i.e up 6 ~ times its full width at half maximum, FWHM ~ 5 cm$^{-1}$). Radiation and hydrolytic resistance of Eu0.054Gd0.014Y0.05La0.111Ce0.2515Pr0.094Nd0.3665Sm0.059PO4 with monazite structure has been studied. The powders were obtained by deposition from solutions. Ceramic specimens with relative density ~97% were obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering (heating rate Vh = 50 {\deg}C/min, sintering temperature Ts = 1070 {\deg}C, sintering time ts = 18 min). Irradiation by accelerated electrons up to dose of 10^9 Ge was found not to result in a destruction of the target phase. After the irradiation, an increasing of the leaching rate by an order of magnitude (up to ~10^{-8} g/(cm2*day)) and a reduction of the mechanical properties by 32% as compared to the non-irradiated ceramic specimen were observed., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, one table

Phonon polaritons (PhPs) -- lattice vibrations coupled to electromagnetic fields -- in highly anisotropic media display a plethora of intriguing optical phenomena (including ray-like propagation, anomalous refraction, and topological transitions, among others), which have potential for unprecedented manipulation of the flow of light at the nanoscale. However, the propagation properties of these PhPs are intrinsically linked to the anisotropic crystal structure of the host material. Although in-plane anisotropic PhPs can be steered (and even canalized) by twisting individual crystal slabs in a van der Waals (vdW) stack, active control of their propagation via external stimuli presents a significant challenge. Here, we report on a technology in which anisotropic PhPs supported by biaxial vdW slabs are actively tunable by simply gating an integrated graphene layer. Excitingly, we predict active tuning of optical topological transitions, which enable controlling the canalization of PhPs along different in-plane directions in twisted heterostructures. Apart from their fundamental interest, our findings hold promises for the development of optoelectronic devices (sensors, photodetectors, etc.) based on PhPs with dynamically controllable properties.

Phonon polaritons (PhPs),light coupled to lattice vibrations,with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion exhibit ray-like propagation with large wavevectors and enhanced density of optical states along certain directions on a surface. As such, they have raised a surge of interest as they promise unprecedented possibilities for the manipulation of infrared light with planar circuitry and at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the focusing of in-plane hyperbolic PhPs propagating along thin slabs of MoO3. To that end, we developed metallic nanoantennas of convex geometries for both the efficient launching and focusing of the polaritons. Remarkably, the foci obtained exhibit enhanced near-field confinement and absorption compared to foci produced by in-plane isotropic PhPs. More intriguingly, foci sizes as small as lamdap/5 =lamda0/50 were achieved (lamdap is the polariton wavelength and lamda0 the photon wavelength). Focusing of in-plane hyperbolic polaritons introduces a first and most basic building block developing planar polariton optics utilizing in-plane anisotropic van der Waals materials and metasurfaces.

As one of the most fundamental optical phenomena, refraction between isotropic media is characterized by light bending towards the normal to the boundary when passing from a low- to a high-refractive-index medium. However, in anisotropic media, refraction is a much more exotic phenomenon. The most general case of refraction between two anisotropic media remains unexplored, particularly in natural media and at the nanoscale. Here, we visualize and comprehensively study refraction of electromagnetic waves between two strongly anisotropic (hyperbolic) media, and, importantly, we do it with the use of polaritons confined to the nanoscale in a low-loss natural medium, alpha-MoO3. Our images show refraction of polaritons under the general case in which both the direction of propagation and the wavevector are not collinear. As they traverse planar nanoprisms tailored in alpha-MoO3, refracted polaritons exhibit non-intuitive directions of propagation, enabling us to unveil an exotic optical effect: bending-free refraction. Furthermore, we succeed in developing the first in-plane refractive hyperlens, which yields foci as small as lamdap/6, being lamdap the polariton wavelength (lamda0/50 with respect to the wavelength of light in free space). Our results set the grounds for planar nano-optics in strongly anisotropic media, with potential for unprecedented control of the flow of energy at the nanoscale.

Recent discoveries of polaritons in van der Waals (vdW) crystals with directional in-plane propagation, ultra-low losses, and broad spectral tunability have opened the door for unprecedented manipulation of the flow of light at the nanoscale. However, despite their extraordinary potential for nano-optics, these unique polaritons also present an important limitation: their directional propagation is intrinsically determined by the crystal structure of the host material, which imposes forbidden directions of propagation and hinders its control. Here, we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that directional polaritons (in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons) in a vdW biaxial slab (alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide) can be steered along previously forbidden directions by inducing an optical topological transition, which naturally emerges when placing the slab on a substrate with a given negative permittivity (4H-SiC). Importantly, due to the low-loss nature of this topological transition, we are able to visualize in real space exotic intermediate polaritonic states between mutually orthogonal hyperbolic regimes, which permit to unveil the unique topological origin of the transition. This work provides new insights into the emergence of low-loss optical topological transitions in vdW crystals, offering a novel route to efficiently steer the flow of energy at the nanoscale.

Large optical anisotropy observed in a broad spectral range is of paramount importance for efficient light manipulation in countless devices. Although a giant anisotropy was recently observed in the mid-infrared wavelength range, for visible and near-infrared spectral intervals, the problem remains acute with the highest reported birefringence values of 0.8 in BaTiS3 and h-BN crystals. This inspired an intensive search for giant optical anisotropy among natural and artificial materials. Here, we demonstrate that layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) provide an answer to this quest owing to their fundamental differences between intralayer strong covalent bonding and weak interlayer van der Walls interaction. To do this, we carried out a correlative far- and near-field characterization validated by first-principle calculations that reveals an unprecedented birefringence of 1.5 in the infrared and 3 in the visible light for MoS2. Our findings demonstrate that this outstanding anisotropy allows for tackling the diffraction limit enabling an avenue for on-chip next-generation photonics., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures
