Progress in electrochemical applications of ionic liquids builds on an understanding of electrical double-layer. This computational study focuses on structure-determined quantities -- maximum packing density, potentials and capacitances -- evaluated using a one-electrode electrical double-layer model. Interfaces of 40 studied ions are grouped into four distinct classes according to their characteristic packing at the model surface. The simulations suggest that the exact screening by a monolayer of counter-ions (preceding the crowding of ions) is unlikely for common ions within the electrochemical stability window of corresponding ionic liquids. In this study, we investigated the graphene-ionic liquid (EMImBF4) interface to clarify the effects of ambient temperature and potential on the differential capacitance. We complemented molecular dynamics simulations with density functional theory calculations to unravel the electrolyte and electrode contributions to the differential capacitance. As a result, we show: (1) the relation of characteristic saddle points of the capacitance-potential curve to the structural changes; (2) the smearing effect of temperature on the local structure and, consequently, on the capacitance; (3) rationalization of these observations with the interfacial bilayer model; and, finally, (4) how quantum capacitance correction dampens the influence of temperature and improves the agreement with the experimental data. The development of carbon dioxide (CO2) scavengers is an acute problem nowadays because of the global warming problem. Many groups around the globe intensively develop new greenhouse gas scavengers. Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are seen as a proper starting point to synthesize more environmentally friendly and high-performance sorbents. Aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHA) represent excellent agents for carbon capture and storage technologies. In the present work, we investigate RTILs in which both the weakly coordinating cation and AHA bind CO2. The ammonium-, phosphonium- and sulfonium-based 2-cyanopyrrolidines were investigated using the state-of-the-art method to describe the thermochemistry of the CO2 fixation reactions. The infrared spectra, electronic and structural properties were simulated at the hybrid density functional level of theory to characterize the reactants and products of the chemisorption reactions. We conclude that the proposed CO2 capturing mechanism is thermodynamically allowed and discuss the difference between different families of RTILs. Quite unusually, the intramolecular electrostatic attraction plays an essential role in stabilizing the zwitterionic products of the CO2 chemisorption. The difference of chemisorption performance between the families of RTILs is linked to sterical hindrances and nucleophilicities of the {\alpha}- and \b{eta}-carbon atoms of the aprotic cations. In this study, we examined the thickness of the electrical double layer (EDL) in ionic liquids using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We focused on the BF4- anion adsorption from 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF4) ionic liquid on the Au(111) surface. At both DFT and MD levels, we evaluated the capacitance-potential dependence for the Helmholtz model of the interface. Using MD simulations, we also explored a more realistic, multilayer EDL model accounting for the ion layering. Concurrent analysis of the DFT and MD results provides a ground for thinking whether the electrical double layer in ionic liquids is one- or multi-ionic-layer thick.

Reliable force field (FF) is a central issue in successful prediction of physical chemical properties via computer simulations.

We apply a new methodology in the force field generation (PCCP 2011, 13, 7910) to study the binary mixtures of five imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with acetonitrile (ACN). The investigated RTILs are composed of tetrafluoroborate (BF4) anion and dialkylimidazolium cations, where one of the alkyl groups is methyl for all RTILs, and the other group is different for each RTILs, being ethyl (EMIM), butyl (BMIM), hexyl (HMIM), octyl (OMIM), and decyl (DMIM). Specific densities, radial distribution functions, ionic cluster distributions, heats of vaporization, diffusion constants, shear viscosities, ionic conductivities, and their correlations are discussed. Upon addition of ACN, the ionic conductivity of RTILs is found to increase by more than 50 times, that significantly exceeds an impact of most known solvents. Remarkably, the sharpest conductivity growth is found for the long-tailed imidazolium-based cations. This new fact motivates to revisit an application of these binary systems as advanced electrolytes. The ionic conductivity correlates generally with a composition of ionic clusters, simplifying its predictability. In turn, the addition of ACN exponentially increases diffusion and decreases viscosity of the imidazolium-based RTILs/ACN mixtures. Large amounts of acetonitrile stabilize ion pairs, but ruin greater ionic clusters.
