Search

Mutual scattering arises when multiple waves intersect within a finite scattering object, resulting in cross-interference between the incident and scattered waves. By measuring mutual scattering, we determine the complex-valued scattering amplitude $f$ - both amplitude and phase - of the finite object, which holds information on its scattering properties by linking incident and outgoing waves from any arbitrary direction. Mutual scattering is present for any coherent wave - acoustic, electromagnetic, particle - and we here demonstrate the effect using optical experiments. We propose an experimental technique for characterization that utilizes mutual scattering and we present our results for four distinct finite objects: a polystyrene sphere (diameter $59\ \mu$m), a single black human hair (diameter $92\ \mu$m), a strip of pultruded carbon (edge length $140\ \mu$m), and a block of ZnO$_2$ (edge length $64\ \mu$m). Our measurements exhibit qualitative agreement with Mie scattering calculations where the model is applicable. Deviations from the model indicate the complexity of the objects, both in terms of their geometrical structure and scattering properties. Our results offer new insights into mutual scattering and have significant implications for future applications of sample characterization in fields such as metrology, microscopy, and nanofabrication., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

State-of-the-art computational methods combined with common idealized structural models provide an incomplete understanding of experiments on real nanostructures, since manufacturing introduces unavoidable deviations from the design. We propose to close this knowledge gap by using the real structure of a manufactured crystal as input in computations to obtain a realistic comparison with observations on the same nanostructure. We demonstrate this approach on the structure of a real silicon inverse woodpile photonic bandgap crystal, obtained by previous synchrotron X-ray imaging. A 2D part of the dataset is selected and processed into a computational mesh suitable for a Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method (DGFEM) to compute optical transmission spectra that are compared to those of a utopian crystal, i.e., a hypothetical model crystal with the same filling fraction where all pores are identical and circular. The nanopore shapes in the real crystal differ in a complex way from utopian pores, leading to a complex transmission spectrum with significant frequency speckle in and beyond the gap. The utopian model provides only a limited understanding of the spectrum: while it accurately predicts low frequency finite-size fringes and the lower band edge, the upper band edge is off, it completely misses the presence of speckle, the domination of speckle above the gap, and possible Anderson localized states in the gap. Moreover, unlike experiments where only external probes are available, numerical methods allow to study all fields everywhere. While the pore shapes hardly affect the fields at low frequency, major differences occur at high frequency such as localized fields deep inside the real crystal. In summary, using only external measurements and utopian models may give an erroneous picture of the fields and the LDOS inside a real crystal, which is remedied by our new approach., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, including 1 supplement

The accurate determination of the position-dependent energy fluence rate of light is crucial for the understanding of transport in anisotropically scattering and absorbing samples, such as biological tissue, seawater, atmospheric turbulent layers, and light-emitting diodes. While Monte Carlo simulations are precise, their long computation time is not desirable. Common analytical approximations to the radiative transfer equation (RTE) fail to predict light transport, and could even give unphysical results. Here, we experimentally probe the position-dependent energy fluence rate of light inside scattering samples where the widely used $P_1$ and $P_3$ approximations to the RTE fail. We study samples that contain anisotropically scattering and absorbing spherical scatterers, namely microspheres ($r = 0.5$ $\rm{\mu}$m) with and without absorbing dye. To probe the position-dependent energy fluence rate, we detect the emission of quantum dots that are excited by the incident light and that are contained in a thin capillary. By scanning the sample using the capillary, we access the position dependence. We present a comprehensive analysis of experimental limitations and (systematic) errors. Our measured observations are compared to the results of analytical approximations of the solution of the radiative transfer equation and to Monte Carlo simulations. Our observations are found to agree well with the Monte Carlo simulations. The $P_3$ approximation with a correction for forward scattering also agrees with our observations, whereas the $P_1$ and the $P_3$ approximations deviate increasingly from our observations, ultimately even predicting unphysical negative energies.

Wavefront shaping is a technique to study and control light transport inside scattering media. Wavefront shaping is considered to be applicable to any complex material, yet in most previous studies, the only sample geometries that are studied are slabs or wave-guides. In this paper, we study how macroscopic changes in the sample shape affect light scattering using the wavefront shaping technique. Using a flexible scattering material, we optimize the intensity of light in a focusing spot using wavefront shaping and record the optimized pattern, comparing the enhancement for different curvatures and beam radii. We validate our hypothesis that wavefront shaping has a similar enhancement regardless of the free-form shape of the sample and thus offers relevant potential for industrial applications. We propose a new figure of merit to evaluate the performance of wavefront shaping for different shapes. Surprisingly, based on this figure of merit, we observe that for this particular sample, wavefront shaping has a slightly better performance for a free-form shape than for a slab shape.

We employ unsupervised machine learning to enhance the accuracy of our recently presented scaling method for wave confinement analysis [1]. We employ the standard k-means++ algorithm as well as our own model-based algorithm. We investigate cluster validity indices as a means to find the correct number of confinement dimensionalities to be used as an input to the clustering algorithms. Subsequently, we analyze the performance of the two clustering algorithms when compared to the direct application of the scaling method without clustering. We find that the clustering approach provides more physically meaningful results, but may struggle with identifying the correct set of confinement dimensionalities. We conclude that the most accurate outcome is obtained by first applying the direct scaling to find the correct set of confinement dimensionalities and subsequently employing clustering to refine the results. We experimentally investigate unusual light propagation inside a three-dimensional (3D) superlattice of resonant cavities that are confined within a 3D photonic band gap. Therefore, we fabricated 3D diamond-like photonic crystals from silicon with a broad 3D band gap in the near-infrared and doped them with a periodic array of point defects. In position-resolved reflectivity and scattering microscopy, we observe narrow spectral features that match well with superlattice bands in band structures computed with the plane wave expansion. The cavities are coupled in all three dimensions when they are closely spaced and uncoupled when they are further apart. We investigate the potential of mutual scattering, i.e., light scattering with multiple properly phased incident beams, as a method to extract structural information from inside an opaque object. In particular, we study how sensitively the displacement of a single scatterer is detected in an optically dense sample of many (up to $N=1000$) similar scatterers. By performing exact calculations on ensembles of many point scatterers, we compare the mutual scattering (from two beams) and the well-known differential cross-section (from one beam) in response to the change of location of a single dipole inside a configuration of randomly distributed similar dipoles. Our numerical examples show that mutual scattering provides speckle patterns with an angular sensitivity at least 10 times higher than the traditional one-beam techniques. By studying the "susceptivity" of mutual scattering, we demonstrate the possibility to determine the original depth relative to the incident surface of the displaced dipole in an opaque sample. We study the secrecy of an optical communication system with two scattering layers, to hide both the sender and receiver, by measuring the correlation of the intermediate speckle generated between the two layers. The binary message is modulated as spatially shaped wavefronts, and the high number of transmission modes of the scattering layers allows for many uncorrelated incident wavefronts to send the same message, making it difficult for an attacker to intercept or decode the message and thus increasing secrecy. We collect 50,000 intermediate speckle patterns and analyze their correlation distribution using Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. We search for further correlations using the K-Means and Hierarchical unsupervised classification algorithms. We find no correlation between the intermediate speckle and the message, suggesting a person-in-the-middle attack is not possible. This method is compatible with any digital encryption method and is applicable for codifications in optical wireless communication (OWC).

We perform a theoretical and numerical study of the optical properties of both direct and inverse three-dimensional (3D) chiral woodpile structures, and a corresponding chiral Bragg stack. We compute transmission spectra in the helical direction for finite crystals, and photonic band structures, where we ensure the effective index of all structures to be the same. We find that both 3D structures show dual-band circular dichroism, where light with a particular circular polarization state - either left- or right-handed - reveals a broad stop band with major attenuation, whereas the other polarization state is transmitted nearly unimpeded. We observe such gaps in different frequency ranges, with alternating handedness. The appearance of the circular-polarized gaps is successfully interpreted with a physical model wherein the circular polarization either co-rotates or counter-rotates with the chiral structure, thereby effectively leading to a spatially-dependent or a constant refractive index, and thus to the presence or absence of a gap. We find that the presence or absence of circularly polarized gaps is tuned by the transverse periods perpendicular to the chiral axis in both the 3D direct and inverse chiral woodpile crystal structures. Functional defects in periodic media confine waves - acoustic, electromagnetic, electronic, spin, etc. - in various dimensions, depending on the structure of the defect. While defects are usually modelled by a superlattice with a typical band-structure representation of energy levels, determining the confinement associated with a given band is highly non-trivial and no analytical method is known to date. Therefore, we propose a rigorous method to classify the dimensionality of the confinement. Starting from the confinement energy and the mode volume, we use finite-size scaling to find that ratios of these quantities to certain powers yield the confinement dimensionality of each band. This classification has negligible additional computational costs compared to a band structure calculation and is valid for any type of wave in both quantum and classical regimes, and any dimension. In the quantum case, we illustrate our method on electronic confinement in 2D hexagonal BN with a nitrogen vacancy, which confirms the previous results. Controlling light scattering by nanoparticles is fundamentally important for the understanding and the control of light with photonic nanostructures, as well as for nanoparticle scattering itself, including Mie scattering. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate the possibility to manipulate nanoparticle scattering by wavefront shaping that was initially developed to control light scattered by large numbers of nanoparticles in nanophotonic media. By employing a scattering matrix analysis, we find that even a single nanoparticle supports multiple strongly scattering eigenchannels, suggesting wavefront shaping as a promising tool to manipulate scattered light of a single nanoparticle. By sending in shaped wavefronts, we selectively excite eigenchannels, as is apparent from the distinct field distributions. These scattering eigenchannels are related to different resonant leaky modes of the scatterer, that reveal remarkable localized "hot spots" where the field is substantially enhanced. Moreover, we investigate the backscattered spectra; to this send in wavefronts relevant for a particular eigenchannel, and observe that the backscattered spectrum reveals not only the excited channel but also several others. This result points to the existence of short and long-range spectral correlations for an eigenchannel. Our work offers a flexible tool to manipulate light scattering of a single nanoparticle, and thus opens new possibilities to control field patterns and light-matter interactions in a nanoparticle, as well as to explore new features of nanoparticle scattering such as the spectral correlation and temporal response of light scattered by nano scatterers, including Mie spheres., Comment: 8 pages, 2 tables, 4 figures

The radiative transfer equation (RTE) models the transport of light inside photonic scattering samples such as paint, foam and tissue. Analytic approximations to solve the RTE fail for samples with strong absorption and dominant anisotropic scattering and predict unphysical negative energy densities and the diffuse flux in the wrong direction. Here we fully characterize the unphysical regions of three popular approximations to the RTE for a slab, namely the $P_1$ approximation (or diffusion approximation), the $P_3$ approximation, and a popular modification to $P_3$ that corrects the forward scattering in the approximation. We find that the delta function correction to $P_3$ eliminates the unphysical range in the forward scattering. In addition, we compare the predictions of these analytical methods to exact Monte Carlo simulations for the physical and unphysical regions. We present maps of relative errors for the albedo and the anisotropy of the scatterers for a realistic index contrast typical of a polymer slab in air and optical thickness. The relative error maps provide a guideline for the accuracy of the analytical methods to interpret experiments on light transport in photonic scattering slabs. Our results show that the $P_1$ approximation is significantly inaccurate to extract transport parameters unless the sample scatters purely isotropic and elastic. The $P_3$ approximation exceeds $P_1$ in terms of accuracy in its physical range for moderate absorption, and the $P_3$ with the delta function correction is the most accurate approximation considered here for the forward direction.

Since thin-film silicon solar cells have limited optical absorption, we explore the effect of a nanostructured back reflector to recycle the unabsorbed light. As a back reflector we investigate a 3D photonic band gap crystal made from silicon that is readily integrated with the thin films. We numerically obtain the optical properties by solving the 3D time-harmonic Maxwell equations using the finite-element method, and model silicon with experimentally determined optical constants. The absorption enhancement relevant for photovoltaics is obtained by weighting the absorption spectra with the AM 1.5 standard solar spectrum. We study thin films either thicker ($L_{Si} = 2400$ nm) or much thinner ($L_{Si} = 80$ nm) than the wavelength of light. At $L_{Si} = 2400$ nm, the 3D photonic band gap crystal enhances the spectrally averaged ($\lambda = 680$ nm to $880$ nm) silicon absorption by $2.22$x (s-pol.) to $2.45$x (p-pol.), which exceeds the enhancement of a perfect metal back reflector ($1.47$ to $1.56$x). The absorption is enhanced by the (i) broadband angle and polarization-independent reflectivity in the 3D photonic band gap, and (ii) the excitation of many guided modes in the film by the crystal's surface diffraction leading to enhanced path lengths. At $L_{Si} = 80$ nm, the photonic crystal back reflector yields a striking average absorption enhancement of $9.15$x, much more than $0.83$x for a perfect metal, which is due to a remarkable guided mode confined within the combined thickness of the thin film and the photonic crystal's Bragg attenuation length. The broad bandwidth of the 3D photonic band gap leads to the back reflector's Bragg attenuation length being much shorter than the silicon absorption length. Consequently, light is confined inside the thin film and the absorption enhancements are not due to the additional thickness of the photonic crystal back reflector., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures

Interference of scattered waves is fundamental for modern light-scattering techniques, such as optical wavefront shaping. Recently, a new type of wavefront shaping was introduced where the extinction is manipulated instead of the scattered intensity. The underlying idea is that upon changing the phases or the amplitudes of incident beams, the total extinction will change due to interference described by the cross terms between different incident beams. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the mutual extinction and transparency effects in scattering media, in particular, a human hair and a silicon bar. To this end, we send two light beams with a variable mutual angle on the sample. Depending on the relative phase of the incident beams we observe either nearly zero extinction, mutual transparency, or almost twice the single-beam extinction, mutual extinction, in agreement with theory. We use an analytical approximation for the scattering amplitude, starting from a completely opaque object and we discuss the limitations of our approximation. We discuss the applications of the mutual extinction and transparency effects in various fields such as non-line-of-sight communications, microscopy, and biomedical imaging.

It is well known that waves incident upon a crystal are transported only over a limited distance - the Bragg length - before being reflected by Bragg interference. Here, we demonstrate how to send waves much deeper into crystals, by studying light in exemplary two-dimensional silicon photonic crystals. By spatially shaping the optical wavefronts, we observe that the intensity of laterally scattered light, that probes the internal energy density, is enhanced at a tunable distance away from the front surface. The intensity is up to $100 \times$ enhanced compared to random wavefronts and extends as far as $8 \times$ the Bragg length. Our novel steering of waves inside a forbidden gap exploits the transport channels induced by unavoidable deviations from perfect periodicity, here unavoidable fabrication deviations., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

A three-dimensional (3D) photonic band gap crystal is an ideal tool to completely inhibit the local density of optical states (LDOS) at every position in the crystal throughout the band gap. This notion, however, pertains to ideal infinite crystals, whereas any real crystal device is necessarily finite. This raises the question as to how the LDOS in the gap depends on the position and orientation inside a finite-size crystal. Therefore, we employ rigorous numerical calculations using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of 3D silicon inverse woodpile crystals filled with air or with toluene, as previously studied in experiments. We find that the LDOS versus position decreases exponentially into the bulk of the crystal. From the dependence on dipole orientation, we infer that the characteristic LDOS decay length $\ell_{\rho}$ is mostly related to far-field dipolar radiation effects, whereas the prefactor is mostly related to near-field dipolar effects. The LDOS decay length has a remarkably similar magnitude as the Bragg length for directional transport, which suggests that the LDOS in the crystal is dominated by vacuum states that tunnel from the closest interface towards the position of interest. We study the optical reflectivity of three-dimensional (3D) photonic band gap crystals with increasing thickness. The crystals consist of GaAs plates with nanorod arrays that are assembled by an advanced stacking method into high-quality 3D woodpile structures. We observe intense and broad reflectivity peak with stop bands that correspond to a broad gap in the photonic band structures. The maximum reflectivity quickly reaches high values even for a few crystal layers. Remarkably, the bandwidth of the stop bands hardly decreases with increasing crystal thickness, in good agreement with FDTD simulations. This behavior differs remarkably from the large changes observed earlier in weakly interacting 3D photonic crystals. The nearly constant bandwidth and high reflectivity are rationalized by multiple Bragg interference that occurs in strongly interacting photonic band gap crystals, whereby the incident light scatters from multiple reciprocal lattice vectors simultaneously, in particular from oblique ones that are parallel to a longer crystal dimension and thus experience hardly any finite size effects. Our new insights have favorable consequences for the application of 3D photonic band gap crystals, notably since even thin structures reveal the full band gap functionality, including devices that shield quantum bits from vacuum fluctuations., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We report on the generation of few-ps long spontaneous emission pulses by quantum dots (QDs) in a switched optical microcavity. We use a pulsed optical injection of free charge carriers to induce a large frequency shift of the fundamental mode of a GaAs/AlAs micropillar. We track in real time by time-resolved photoluminescence its fundamental mode during its relaxation, using the emission of the QD ensemble as a broadband internal light source. Sub-ensembles of QDs emitting at a given frequency, interact transiently with the mode and emit an ultrashort spontaneous emission pulse into it. By playing with switching parameters and with the emission frequency of the QDs, selected by spectral filtering, pulse durations ranging from 300 ps down to 6 ps have been obtained. These pulses display a very small coherence length, which opens potential applications in the field of ultrafast imaging. We provide a pedagogical introduction to the concept of the local density of optical states (LDOS), illustrating its application to both the classical and quantum theory of radiation. We show that the LDOS governs the efficiency of a macroscopic classical antenna, determining how the antenna's emission depends on its environment. The LDOS is shown to similarly modify the spontaneous emission rate of a quantum emitter, such as an excited atom, molecule, ion, or quantum dot that is embedded in a nanostructured optical environment. The difference between the number density of optical states, the local density of optical states, and the partial local density of optical states is elaborated and examples are provided for each density of states to illustrate where these are required. We illustrate the universal effect of the LDOS on emission by comparing systems with emission wavelengths that differ by more than 5 orders of magnitude, and systems whose decay rates differ by more than 5 orders of magnitude. To conclude we discuss and resolve an apparent difference between the classical and quantum expressions for the spontaneous emission rate that often seems to be overlooked, and discuss the experimental determination of the LDOS., Comment: 80 pages, 19 figures

The identification of a complete three-dimensional (3D) photonic band gap in real crystals always employs theoretical or numerical models that invoke idealized crystal structures. Thus, this approach is prone to false positives (gap wrongly assigned) or false negatives (gap missed). Therefore, we propose a purely experimental probe of the 3D photonic band gap that pertains to many different classes of photonic materials. We study position and polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra of 3D inverse woodpile structures that consist of two perpendicular nanopore arrays etched in silicon. We observe intense reflectivity peaks $(R > 90\%)$ typical of high-quality crystals with broad stopbands. We track the stopband width versus pore radius, which agrees much better with the predicted 3D photonic band gap than with a directional stop gap on account of the large numerical aperture used. A parametric plot of s-polarized versus p-polarized stopband width agrees very well with the 3D band gap and is model-free. This practical probe provides fast feedback on the advanced nanofabrication needed for 3D photonic crystals and stimulates practical applications of band gaps in 3D silicon nanophotonics and photonic integrated circuits, photovoltaics, cavity QED, and quantum information processing., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

The well-known diffusion theory describes propagation of light and electromagnetic waves in complex media. While diffusion theory is known to fail both for predominant forward scattering or strong absorption, its precise range of validity has never been established. Therefore we present precise, universal limits on the scattering properties, beyond which diffusion theory yields unphysical negative energy density and negative incident flux. When applying diffusion theory to samples outside validity ranges to {\it infer} scattering properties from transmission and reflection, the resulting transport parameters deviate by up to an order of magnitude compared to the true ones. These discrepancies are relevant to atmospheric and climate sciences, biophysics and health sciences, white LEDs and lighting, and Anderson localization of waves.

Lighting is a crucial technology that is used every day. The introduction of the white light emitting diode (LED) that consists of a blue LED combined with a phosphor layer, greatly reduces the energy consumption for lighting. Despite the fast-growing market white LED's are still designed using slow, numerical, trial-and-error algorithms. Here we introduce a radically new design principle that is based on an analytical model instead of a numerical approach. Our design model predicts the color point for any combination of design parameters. In addition the model provides the reflection and transmission coefficients - as well as the energy density distribution inside the LED - of the scattered and re-emitted light intensities. To validate our model we performed extensive experiments on an emblematic white LED and found excellent agreement. Our model provides for a fast and efficient design, resulting in reduction of both design and production costs.

We explore the unconventional propagation of light in a three-dimensional (3D) superlattice of coupled resonant cavities in a 3D photonic band gap crystal. Such a 3D cavity superlattice is the photonic analogue of the Anderson model for spins and electrons in the limit of zero disorder. Using the plane-wave expansion method, we calculate the dispersion relations of the 3D cavity superlattice with the cubic inverse woodpile structure that reveal five coupled-cavity bands, typical of quadrupole-like resonances. For three out of five bands, we observe that the dispersion bandwidth is significantly larger in the $(k_x, k_z)$-diagonal directions than in other directions. To explain the directionality of the dispersion bandwidth, we employ the tight-binding method from which we derive coupling coefficients in 3D. For all converged coupled-cavity bands, we find that light hops predominantly in a few high-symmetry directions including the Cartesian $(x, y, z)$ directions, therefore we propose the name "Cartesian light". Such 3D Cartesian hopping of light in a band gap yields propagation as superlattice Bloch modes that differ fundamentally from the conventional 3D spatially-extended Bloch wave propagation in crystals, from light tunneling through a band gap, from coupled-resonator optical waveguiding, and also from light diffusing at the edge of a gap.

We study numerically the transport and storage of light in a 3D photonic band gap crystal doped by a single embedded resonant cavity. The crystal has finite support since it is surrounded by vacuum, as in experiments. Therefore, we employ the finite element method to model the diamond-like inverse woodpile crystal that consists of two orthogonal arrays of pores in a high-index dielectric such as silicon and that has experimentally been realized by CMOS-compatible methods. A point defect that functions as the resonant cavity is formed in the proximal region of two selected orthogonal pores with a radius smaller than the ones in the bulk of the crystal. We present a field-field cross-correlation method to identify resonances in the finite-support crystal with defect states that appear in the 3D photonic band gap of the infinite crystal. Out of 5 observed angle-independent cavity resonances, one is s-polarized and 4 are p-polarized for light incident in the X or Z directions. It is remarkable that quality factors up to Q = 1000 appear in such thin structures (3 unit cells). We find that the optical energy density is remarkably enhanced at the cavity resonances by up to 2400x the incident energy density in vacuum or up to 1200x the energy density of the equivalent effective medium. We find that an inverse woodpile photonic band gap cavity with a suitably adapted lattice parameter reveals substantial absorption in the visible range. Below the 3D photonic band gap, Fano resonances arise due to interference between the discrete fundamental cavity mode and the continuum light scattered by the photonic crystal. We argue that the five eigenstates of our 3D photonic band gap cavity have quadrupolar symmetry, in analogy to d-like orbitals of transition metals. We conclude that inverse woodpile cavities offer interesting perspectives for applications in optical sensing and photovoltaics., Comment: 18 pages, 19 figures

We study the three-dimensional (3D) spatially-resolved distribution of the energy density of light in a 3D scattering medium upon the excitation of open transmission channels. The open transmission channels are excited by spatially shaping the incident optical wavefronts. To probe the local energy density, we excite isolated fluorescent nanospheres distributed inside the medium. From the spatial fluorescent intensity pattern we obtain the position of each nanosphere, while the total fluorescent intensity gauges the energy density. Our 3D spatially-resolved measurements reveal that the local energy density versus depth (z) is enhanced up to 26X at the back surface of the medium, while it strongly depends on the transverse (x; y) position. We successfully interpret our results with a newly developed 3D model that considers the time-reversed diffusion starting from a point source at the back surface. Our results are relevant for white LEDs, random lasers, solar cells, and biomedical optics.

The famous vanishing of the density of states (DOS) in a band gap, be it photonic or electronic, pertains to the infinite-crystal limit. In contrast, all experiments and device applications refer to finite crystals, which raises the question: Upon increasing the linear size $L$ of a crystal, how fast does the DOS approach the infinite-crystal limit? We present a theory for finite crystals that includes Bloch-mode broadening due to the presence of crystal boundaries. Our results demonstrate that the DOS for frequencies inside a band gap has a $1/L$ scale dependence for crystals in one, two and three dimensions.

Structural disorder results in multiple scattering in real photonic crystals, which have been widely used for applications and studied for fundamental interests. The interaction of light with such complex photonic media is expected to show interplay between disorder and order. For a completely disordered medium, the intensity statistics is well-known to obey Rayleigh statistics with a negative exponential distribution function, corresponding to absence of correlations. Intensity statistics is unexplored however for complex media with both order and disorder. We study experimentally the intensity statistics of light reflected from photonic crystals with various degree of disorder. We observe deviations from the Rayleigh distribution and the deviations increase with increasing long-range order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study numerically the reflectivity of three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals with a complete 3D photonic band gap, with the aim to interpret recent experiments. We employ the finite element method to study crystals with the cubic diamond-like inverse woodpile structure. The high-index backbone has a dielectric function similar to silicon. We study crystals with a range of thicknesses up to ten unit cells ($L \leq 10 c$). The crystals are surrounded by vacuum, and have a finite support as in experiments. The polarization-resolved reflectivity spectra reveal Fabry-P{\'e}rot fringes related to standing waves in the finite crystal, as well as broad stop bands with nearly $100~\%$ reflectivity, even for thin crystals. From the strong reflectivity peaks, it is inferred that the maximum reflectivity observed in experiments is not limited by finite size. The frequency ranges of the stop bands are in excellent agreement with stop gaps in the photonic band structure, that pertain to infinite and perfect crystals. The frequency ranges of the observed stop bands hardly change with angle of incidence, which is plausible since the stop bands are part of the 3D band gap. Moreover, this result supports the previous assertion that intense reflection peaks measured with a large numerical aperture provide a faithful signature of the 3D photonic band gap. The Bragg attenuation lengths $L_{B}$ exceed the earlier estimates based on the width of the stop band by a factor $6$ to $9$. Hence crystals with a thickness of $12$ unit cells studied in experiments are in the thick crystal limit ($L >> L_{B}$). In our calculations for p-polarized waves, we also observe an intriguing hybridization of the zero reflection of Fabry-P{\'e}rot fringes and the Brewster angle, which has not yet been observed in experiments.

The recent advent of wave-shaping methods has demonstrated the focusing of light through and inside even the most strongly scattering materials. Typically in wavefront shaping, light is focused in an area with the size of one speckle spot. It has been shown that the intensity is not only increased in the target speckle spot, but also in an area outside the optimized speckle spot. Consequently, the total transmission is enhanced, even though only the intensity in a single speckle spot is controlled. Here, we experimentally study how the intensity enhancement on both interfaces of a scattering medium depends on the optimization area on the transmission side. We observe that as the optimization radius increases, the enhancement of the total transmitted intensity increases. We find a concomitant decrease of the total reflected intensity, which implies an energy redistribution between transmission and reflection channels. In addition, we find a qualitative evidence of a long-range reflection-transmission correlation. Our result is useful for efficient light harvesting in solar cells, multi-channel quantum secure communications, imaging, and complex beam delivery through a scattering medium., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We show that the spatial distribution of the energy density of optimally shaped waves inside a scattering medium can be described by considering only a few of the lowest eigenfunctions of the diffusion equation. Taking into account only the fundamental eigenfunction, the total internal energy inside the sample is underestimated by only 2%. The spatial distribution of the shaped energy density is very similar to the fundamental eigenfunction, up to a cosine distance of about 0.01. We obtained the energy density inside a quasi-1D disordered waveguide by numerical calculation of the joined scattering matrix. Computing the transmission-averaged energy density over all transmission channels yields the ensemble averaged energy density of shaped waves. From the averaged energy density obtained, we reconstruct its spatial distribution using the eigenfunctions of the diffusion equation. The results from our study have exciting applications in controlled biomedical imaging, efficient light harvesting in solar cells, enhanced energy conversion in solid-state lighting, and low threshold random lasers.

We demonstrate that optical transmission matrices (TM) of disordered complex media provide a powerful tool to extract the photonic interaction strength, independent of surface effects. We measure TM of strongly scattering GaP nanowires and plot the singular value density of the measured matrices and a random matrix model. By varying the free parameters of the model, the transport mean free path and effective refractive index, we retrieve the photonic interaction strength. From numerical simulations we conclude that TM statistics is hardly sensitive to surface effects, in contrast to enhanced backscattering or total transmission based methods., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures

We investigate two-photon quantum interference in an opaque scattering medium that intrinsically supports $10^6$ transmission channels. By adaptive spatial phase-modulation of the incident wavefronts, the photons are directed at targeted speckle spots or output channels. From $10^3$ experimentally available coupled channels, we select two channels and enhance their transmission, to realize the equivalent of a fully programmable $2\times2$ beam splitter. By sending pairs of single photons from a parametric down-conversion source through the opaque scattering medium, we observe two-photon quantum interference. The programmed beam splitter need not fulfill energy conservation over the two selected output channels and hence could be non-unitary. Consequently, we have the freedom to tune the quantum interference from bunching (Hong-Ou-Mandel-like) to antibunching. Our results establish opaque scattering media as a platform for high-dimensional quantum interference that is notably relevant for boson sampling and physical-key-based authentication.

We have switched GaAs/AlAs and AlGaAs/AlAs planar microcavities that operate in the "Original" (O) telecom band by exploiting the instantaneous electronic Kerr effect. We observe that the resonance frequency reversibly shifts within one picosecond. We investigate experimentally and theoretically the role of several main parameters: the material backbone and its electronic bandgap, the pump power, the quality factor, and the duration of the switch pulse. The magnitude of the shift is reduced when the backbone of the central $\lambda-$layer has a greater electronic bandgap; pumping with photon energies near the bandgap resonantly enhances the switched magnitude. Our model shows that the magnitude of the resonance frequency shift depends on the pump pulse duration and is maximized when the duration matches the cavity storage time that is set by the quality factor. We provide the settings for the essential parameters so that the frequency shift of the cavity resonance can be increased to one linewidth.

Motivated by the ongoing debate about nanophotonic control of Foerster resonance energy transfer (FRET), notably by the local density of optical states (LDOS), we study an analytic model system wherein a pair of ideal dipole emitters - donor and acceptor - exhibit energy transfer in the vicinity of an ideal mirror. The FRET rate is controlled by the mirror up to distances comparable to the donor-acceptor distance, that is, the few-nanometer range. For vanishing distance, we find a complete inhibition or a four-fold enhancement, depending on dipole orientation. For mirror distances on the wavelength scale, where the well-known `Drexhage' modification of the spontaneous-emission rate occurs, the FRET rate is constant. Hence there is no correlation between the Foerster (or total) energy transfer rate and the LDOS. At any distance to the mirror, the total energy transfer between a closely-spaced donor and acceptor is dominated by Foerster transfer, i.e., by the static dipole-dipole interaction that yields the characteristic inverse-sixth-power donor-acceptor distance dependence in homogeneous media. Generalizing to arbitrary inhomogeneous media with weak dispersion and weak absorption in the frequency overlap range of donor and acceptor, we derive two main theoretical results. Firstly, the spatially dependent Foerster energy transfer rate does not depend on frequency, hence not on the LDOS. Secondly the FRET rate is expressed as a frequency integral of the imaginary part of the Green function. This leads to an approximate FRET rate in terms of the LDOS integrated over a huge bandwidth from zero frequency to about 10 times the donor emission frequency, corresponding to the vacuum-ultraviolet. Even then, the broadband LDOS hardly contributes to the energy transfer rates. We discuss practical consequences including quantum information processing., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

We demonstrate experimentally that optical wavefront shaping selectively couples light into the fundamental diffusion mode of a scattering medium. The total energy density inside a scattering medium of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles was probed by measuring the emitted fluorescent power of spheres that were randomly positioned inside the medium. The fluorescent power of an optimized incident wave front is observed to be enhanced compared to a non-optimized incident front. The observed enhancement increases with sample thickness. Based on diffusion theory, we derive a model wherein the distribution of energy density of wavefront-shaped light is described by the fundamental diffusion mode. The agreement between our model and the data is striking not in the least since there are no adjustable parameters. Enhanced total energy density is crucial to increase the efficiency of white LEDs, solar cells, and of random lasers, as well as to realize controlled illumination in biomedical optics., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We provide an introduction to complex photonic media, that is, composite materials with spatial inhomogeneities that are distributed over length scales comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of light. This blossoming field is firmly rooted in condensed matter physics, in optics, and in materials science. Many stimulating analogies exist with other wave phenomena such as sound and seismology, X-rays, neutrons. The field has a rich history, which has led to many applications in lighting, novel lasers, light harvesting, microscopy, and bio optics. We provide a brief overview of complex photonic media with different classes of spatial order, varying from completely random to long-periodically ordered structures, quasi crystalline and aperiodic structures, and arrays of cavities. In addition to shaping optical waves by suitable photonic nanostructures, the realization is quickly arising that the spatial shaping of optical wavefronts with spatial light modulators dramatically increases the number of control parameters. As a result, it is becoming possible for instance to literally see through completely opaque complex media. We discuss a unified view of complex photonic media by means of a photonic interaction strength parameter. Fluorescence microscopy is indispensable in nanoscience and biological sciences. The versatility of labeling target structures with fluorescent dyes permits to visualize structure and function at a subcellular resolution with a wide field of view. Due to the diffraction limit, conventional optical microscopes are limited to resolving structures larger than 200 nm. The resolution can be enhanced by near-field and far-field super-resolution microscopy methods. Near-field methods typically have a limited field of view and far-field methods are limited by the involved conventional optics. Here, we introduce a combined high-resolution and wide-field fluorescence microscopy method that improves the resolution of a conventional optical microscope by exploiting correlations in speckle illumination through a randomly scattering high-index medium: Speckle correlation resolution enhancement (SCORE). As a test, we collect two-dimensional fluorescence images of 100-nm diameter dye-doped nanospheres. We demonstrate a deconvolved resolution of 130 nm with a field of view of 10 x 10 $\text{\mu m}^2$.

We study a hybrid system consisting of a narrowband atomic optical resonance and the long-range periodic order of an opaline photonic nanostructure. To this end, we have infiltrated atomic cesium vapor in a thin silica opal photonic crystal. With increasing temperature, the frequencies of the opal's reflectivity peaks shift down by >20% due to chemical reduction of the silica. Simultaneously, the photonic bands and gaps shift relative to the fixed near-infrared cesium D1 transitions. As a result the narrow atomic resonances with high finesse (f/df=8E5) dramatically change shape from a usual dispersive shape at the blue edge of a stop gap, to an inverted dispersion lineshape at the red edge of a stop gap. The lineshape, amplitude, and off-resonance reflectivity are well modeled with a transfer-matrix model that includes the dispersion and absorption of Cs hyperfine transitions and the chemically-reduced opal. An ensemble of atoms in a photonic crystal is an intriguing hybrid system that features narrow defect-like resonances with a strong dispersion, with potential applications in slow light, sensing and optical memory., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We experimentally observe the spatial intensity statistics of light transmitted through three-dimensional isotropic scattering media. The intensity distributions measured through layers consisting of zinc oxide nanoparticles differ significantly from the usual Rayleigh statistics associated with speckle, and instead are in agreement with the predictions of mesoscopic transport theory, taking into account the known material parameters of the samples. Consistent with the measured spatial intensity fluctuations, the total transmission fluctuates. The magnitude of the fluctuations in the total transmission is smaller than expected on the basis of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) transport theory, which indicates that quasi-1D theories cannot fully describe these open three-dimensional media., Comment: 4 pages 3 figures

Ever since the advent of nonlinear optics, the generation of light by frequency-conversion is drawing continued attention, and leading to emerging applications such as supercontinuum sources for ultra stable clocks and advanced microscopy. A modern approach to frequency-conversion is to switch light confined in micro- and nanocavity resonances to enable on-chip operation. Supposedly, nonlinear frequency conversion in such confined media differs from traditional non-linear optics in three key features regarding output spectrum, frequency shift, and critical time scale. Therefore, we switch GaAs-AlAs microcavities by the electronic Kerr effect, and study a range of quality factors to bridge the confined and the traditional non-linear regimes. We uncover the key role of the density of vacuum fluctuations, i.e., the local density of optical states (LDOS) for newly generated frequencies, a concept inspired by cavity quantum electrodynamics (cQED). As a result, we succeed to establish a framework, which not only describes nonlinear optics both in traditional bulk and in confined media but also opens a new control dimension in changing the color of light., Comment: 7 double column pages, 5 figures

We theoretically investigate the design of cavities in a three-dimensional (3D) inverse woodpile photonic crystal. This class of cubic diamond-like crystals has a very broad photonic band gap and consists of two perpendicular arrays of pores with a rectangular structure. The point defect that acts as a cavity is centred on the intersection of two intersecting perpendicular pores with a radius that differs from the ones in the bulk of the crystal. We have performed supercell bandstructure calculations with up to $5 \times 5 \times 5$ unit cells. We find that up to five isolated and dispersionless bands appear within the 3D photonic band gap. For each isolated band, the electric-field energy is localized in a volume centred on the point defect, hence the point defect acts as a 3D photonic band gap cavity. The mode volume of the cavities resonances is as small as 0.8 $\lambda^{3}$ (resonance wavelength cubed), indicating a strong confinement of the light. By varying the radius of the defect pores we found that only donor-like resonances appear for smaller defect radius, whereas no acceptor-like resonances appear for greater defect radius. From a 3D plot of the distribution of the electric-field energy density we conclude that peaks of energy found in sharp edges situated at the point defect, similar to how electrons collect at such features. This is different from what is observed for cavities in non-inverted woodpile structures. Since inverse woodpile crystals can be fabricated from silicon by CMOS-compatible means, we project that single cavities and even cavity arrays can be realized, for wavelength ranges compatible with telecommunication windows in the near infrared., Comment: 11 figures

While the absorption of light is ubiquitous in nature and in applications, the question remains how absorption modifies the transmission channels in random media. We present a numerical study on the effects of optical absorption on the maximal transmission and minimal reflection channels in a two-dimensional disordered waveguide. In the weak absorption regime, where the system length is less than the diffusive absorption length, the maximal transmission channel is dominated by diffusive transport and it is equivalent to the minimal reflection channel. Its frequency bandwidth is determined by the underlying quasimode width. However, when the absorption is strong, light transport in the maximal transmission channel undergoes a sharp transition and becomes ballistic-like transport. Its frequency bandwidth increases with absorption, and the exact scaling varies with the sample's realization. The minimal reflection channel becomes different from the maximal transmission channel and becomes dominated by absorption. Counterintuitively, we observe in some samples that the minimum reflection eigenvalue increases with absorption. We perform frequency- and time-resolved all-optical switching of a GaAs-AlAs micropillar cavity using an ultrafast pump-probe setup. The switching is achieved by two-photon excitation of free carriers. We track the cavity resonances in time with a high frequency resolution. The pillar modes exhibit simultaneous frequency shifts, albeit with markedly different maximum switching amplitudes and relaxation dynamics. These differences stem from the non-uniformity of the free carrier density in the micropillar, and are well understood by taking into account the spatial distribution of injected free carriers, their spatial diffusion and surface recombination at micropillar sidewalls., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study the local density of states (LDOS) in a finite photonic crystal, in particular in the frequency range of the band gap. We propose a new point of view on the band gap, which we consider to be the result of vacuum fluctuations in free space that tunnel in the forbidden range in the crystal. As a result, we arrive at a model for the LDOS that is in two major items modified compared to the well-known expression for infinite crystals. Firstly, we modify the Dirac delta functions to become Lorentzians with a width set by the crystal size. Secondly, building on characterization of the fields versus frequency and position we calculated the fields in the band gap. We start from the fields at the band edges, interpolated in space and position, and incorporating the exponential damping in the band gap. We compare our proposed model to exact calculations in one dimension using the transfer matrix method and find very good agreement. Notably, we find that in finite crystals, the LDOS depends on frequency, on position, and on crystal size, in stark contrast to the well-known results for infinite crystals., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

We study the control of coherent light propagation through multiple-scattering media in the presence of measurement noise. In our experiments, we use a two-step optimization procedure to find the optimal incident wavefront. We conclude that the degree of optimal control of coherent light propagation through a multiple-scattering medium is only determined by the number of photoelectrons detected per single speckle spot. The prediction of our model agrees well with the experimental results. Our results offer opportunities for imaging applications through scattering media such as biological tissue in the shot noise limit.

We have theoretically studied the effect of deterministic temporal control of spontaneous emission in a dynamic optical microcavity. We propose a new paradigm in light emission: we envision an ensemble of two-level emitters in an environment where the local density of optical states is modified on a time scale shorter than the decay time. A rate equation model is developed for the excited state population of two-level emitters in a time-dependent environment in the weak coupling regime in quantum electrodynamics. As a realistic experimental system, we consider emitters in a semiconductor microcavity that is switched by free-carrier excitation. We demonstrate that a short temporal increase of the radiative decay rate depletes the excited state and drastically increases the emission intensity during the switch time. The resulting time-dependent spontaneous emission shows a distribution of photon arrival times that strongly deviates from the usual exponential decay: A deterministic burst of photons is spontaneously emitted during the switch event., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We have performed ultrafast pump-probe experiments on a GaAs-AlAs microcavity with a resonance near 1300 nm in the "original" telecom band. We exploit the virtually instantaneous electronic Kerr effect to repeatedly and reproducibly switch a GaAs-AlAs planar microcavity. We achieve repetition times as fast as 300 fs, thereby breaking the THz modulation barrier. The rate of the switching in our experiments is only determined by optics and not by material related relaxation. Our results offer novel opportunities for fundamental studies of cavity-QED and optical information processing in sub-picosecond time scale., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
