2. In Situ Measurement of Mechanical Vibrations of a 4-Rod RFQ at GSI

Abstract

A new 4-rod RFQ was commissioned at the UNILAC in 2009, it went into operation in 2010. At high rf amplitudes strong modulations of the rf reflection emerge. They are attributed to mechanical oscillations of the rods, excited by the rf pulse. As these modulations could so far only be seen during the rf pulse by means of rf measurements, a direct observation of the mechanical vibrations was desirable. Such measurements have been conducted using a commercial laser vibrometer, allowing the investigation of the mechanical behavior of the RFQ in situ and independent of the presence of rf power. Results from investigations under standard operation conditions confirm the vibrations as the source of the modulations observed by rf as well as their excitation by the rf pulse. Further measurements revealed more details about the excitation process, leading to a better understanding and possibly new ways of mitigation., Comment: Proc. Abstract

Frontiers in Chemistry 10, 976635 (2022). doi:10.3389/fchem.2022.976635, Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. Todate, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatographyexperiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, eachbased on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-likeproperties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed ata volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data onadsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for theinhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment andanalyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile andthe least reactive member of group 14. Abstract

International audience; CaF 2 crystals as representatives of the class of ionic nonamorphizable insulators were irradiated with many different swift heavy ions of energy above 0.5 MeV/u providing a broad range of electronic energy losses (S e). Beam-induced modifications were characterized by Channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (C-RBS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD), complemented by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results from C-RBS give evidence of significant damage appearing above a S e threshold of 5 ± 2 keV/nm. A second critical S e appears around 18 ± 3 keV/nm; below this value the damage as function of ion fluence saturates at 20%, while above this the damage saturation level increases with S e , reaching ∼60% for ions of S e = 30 keV/nm. XRD measurements also show effects indicating two threshold values. Above 5 keV/nm, the widths of the XRD reflection peaks increase due to the formation of nanograins, as seen by TEM, while a significant decrease of the peak areas only occurs above 18 keV/nm. The track radii deduced from C-RBS measurements are in agreement with those extracted from the fluence evolution of the widths of the XRD peaks. Moreover, track radii deduced from the peak area analysis are slightly smaller but in agreement with previous track observations by high resolution electron microscopy. Calculations based on the inelastic thermal spike model suggest that the lower threshold at 5 keV/nm is linked to the quenching of the molten phase, whereas the threshold at 18 keV/nm can be interpreted as quenching of the boiling phase. The results of CaF 2 are compared with other nonamorphizable materials such as LiF and UO 2 .

43. A multiple-capillary electrophoresis system for small-scale DNA sequencing and analysis.

Abstract

A five-capillary system has been developed for DNA sequencing and analysis. The post-column fluorescence detector is based on a sheath-flow cuvette. The instrument provides uniform and continuous illumination of the samples. The cuvette virtually eliminates cross-talk in the fluorescence signal between capillaries. Discrete single-photon counting avalanche photodiodes provide high efficiency light detection. The instrument has detection limits (3sigma) of 130 +/- 30 fluorescein molecules injected onto each capillary. Over 650 bases of sequence at 98.8% accuracy were generated in 100 min at 50 degrees C from M13mp18. Separation and detection of short tandem repeats proved efficient and accurate with the use of internal standards for direct comparison of migration times between capillaries.

Abstract

Abstract: The results of present paper have shown that sputtering of yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12) under swift heavy ions in the electronic energy loss regime is non-stoichiometric. Here we are presenting additional experimental results for gadolinium gallium garnet (Gd3Ga5O12) as target. The irradiations were performed with different ions (50Cr (589MeV), 86Kr (195MeV) and 181Ta (400MeV)) impinging perpendicularly to the surface. As earlier, the sputtering yield was determined by collecting the emitted gadolinium and gallium atoms on a thin aluminium foil, placed upstream above the target and analyzing the Al catcher by Rutherford backscattering. Also for Gd3Ga5O12, the emission of Gd and Ga is non-stoichiometric. Sputtering appears above a critical electronic stopping power of Sth =11.6±1.5keV/nm, which is larger than the threshold for track formation, in agreement with other amorphisable materials. In addition, the angular distribution of the sputtered species was measured for Y3Fe5O12 and Gd3Ga5O12 using 200MeV Au ions impinging the surface at 20° relatively to the surface. For the two garnets the ratio of Y/Fe (and Gd/Ga) varies with the angle of emitted species and the stoichiometry seems to be preserved only for an emission perpendicular to the surface. Abstract

Chromatin modifications are long known as an essential part of the orchestrated response resulting in the repair of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Only recently, however, the influence of the chromatin architecture itself on the DNA damage response has been recognised. Thus for heterochromatic DSBs the sensing and early recruitment of repair factors to the lesion occurs within the heterochromatic compartments, but the damage sites are subsequently relocated from the inside to the outside of the heterochromatin. While previous studies were accomplished at the constitutive heterochromatin of centromeric regions in mouse and flies, here we examine the DSB repair at the facultative heterochromatin of the inactive X chromosome (Xi) in humans. Using heavy ion irradiation we show that at later times after irradiation the DSB damage streaks bend around the Xi verifying that the relocation process is conserved between species and not specialised to repetitive sequences only. In addition, to measure chromatin relaxation at rare positions within the genome, we established live cell microscopy at the GSI microbeam thus allowing the aimed irradiation of small nuclear structures like the Xi. Chromatin decondensation at DSBs within the Xi is clearly visible within minutes as a continuous decrease of the DNA staining over time, comparable to the DNA relaxation revealed at DSBs in mouse chromocenters. Furthermore, despite being conserved between species, slight differences in the underlying regulation of these processes in heterochromatic DSBs are apparent. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

We report the upgrade of the epifluorescence microscope of the GSI heavy-ion microprobe with a galvo-scanned, 488 nm laser diode. The laser is focussed into the object plane by the water-immersion objective resulting in a focal spot size of about 1 μm. To increase temporal and spatial resolution a water-immersion objective with a high numerical aperture is integrated into the custom-build microscope. The upgraded system can now be used to bleach GFP-tagged proteins recruited to DNA damage induced by targeted single-ion irradiation. The system is demonstrated on NIH 3T3 cells with Ku80-GFP ion-targeted in heterochromatic and euchromatic DNA. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) is shown to be significantly slower in heterochromatin. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

48. Influence of surface states and size effects on the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistance of Bi 1-x Sb x nanowire arrays.

Abstract

The Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistance of Bi 1-x Sb x nanowire arrays electrodeposited in etched ion-track membranes have been investigated as a function of wire diameter (40-750 nm) and composition (0 ≤ x ≤ 1). The experimental data reveal a non-monotonic dependence between thermopower and wire diameter for three different compositions. Thus, the thermopower values decrease with decreasing wire diameter, exhibiting a minimum around ∼60 nm. This non-monotonic dependence of the Seebeck coefficient is attributed to the interplay of surface and bulk states. On the one hand, the metallic properties of the surface states can contribute to decreasing the thermopower of the nanostructure with increasing surface-to-volume ratio. On the other hand, for wires thinner than ∼60 nm, the relative increase of the thermopower can be tentatively attributed to the presence of quantum-size effects on both surface and bulk states. These measurements contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between bulk and surface states in nanostructures, and indicate that the decrease of Seebeck coefficient with decreasing diameter caused by the presence of surfaces states can possibly be overcome for even thinner nanowires.

Abstract

Although capillary electrophoresis is a powerful sequencing technology, the low heat capacity of a capillary can make difficult the precise control of its temperature, particularly when the capillary is heated to reduce compressions in the separation of DNA sequencing fragments. In this paper, we demonstrate that minute oscillations in the capillary's temperature result in significant degradation in the number of theoretical plates, the resolution between adjacent peaks, and the number of bases of DNA sequence determined from the electrophoresis data. Temperature must be held stable to within 0.1 degrees C to obtain long read lengths. A Monte Carlo simulation demonstrates that this degradation is consistent with laminar flow induced by the periodic thermal expansion and contraction of the separation medium.
