In recent years, various drug delivery systems circumventing the blood–brain barrier have emerged for treating brain tumors. This study aimed to improve the efficacy of brain tumor treatment in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) using cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation to deliver boronophenylalanine (BPA) to targeted tumors. Previous experiments have demonstrated that boron accumulation in the brain cells of normal rats remains comparable to that after intravenous (IV) administration, despite BPA being administered via CSF at significantly lower doses (approximately 1/90 of IV doses). Based on these findings, BNCT was conducted on glioma model rats at the Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KUR), with BPA administered via CSF. This method involved implanting C6 cells into the brains of 8-week-old Wistar rats, followed by administering BPA and neutron irradiation after a 10-day period. In this study, the rats were divided into four groups: one receiving CSF administration, another receiving IV administration, and two control groups without BPA administration, with one subjected to neutron irradiation and the other not. In the CSF administration group, BPA was infused from the cisterna magna at 8 mg/kg/h for 2 h, while in the IV administration group, BPA was intravenously administered at 350 mg/kg via the tail vein over 1.5 h. Thermal neutron irradiation (5 MW) for 20 min, with an average fluence of 3.8 × 1012/cm2, was conducted at KUR's heavy water neutron irradiation facility. Subsequently, all of the rats were monitored under identical conditions for 7 days, with pre- and post-irradiation tumor size assessed through MRI and pathological examination. The results indicate a remarkable therapeutic efficacy in both BPA-administered groups (CSF and IV). Notably, the rats treated with CSF administration exhibited diminished BPA accumulation in normal tissue compared to those treated with IV administration, alongside maintaining excellent overall health. The study area of Rodafnidia on the island of Lesbos (Greece) is considered of archaeological interest, as Paleolithic stone tools have been recovered through excavation and collected from the ground surface in recent years. Geologically, the area is mostly covered by Quaternary post-alpine deposits and volcanic rocks. This paper presents the application of a local geophysical survey to determine the volume of the upper Quaternary deposits in which the Paleolithic artefacts can be found and the identification of their ignimbrite substrates. For this reason, the geoelectrical method was selected as the most appropriate for determining the lithostratigraphic subsurface layers. More specifically, a grid of twenty-one (21) Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) along with an Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) was carried out. The interpretation of the results of these surveys, in conjunction with the results of older excavation trenches, revealed that the Quaternary deposits have been investigated at depths ranging from 0.5 up to 28.5 meters. Furthermore, the lithological boundary of these post-alpine deposits and their underlying pyroclastic ignimbrite flow (with resistivity 24.0–58.0 Ohm.m) seem to dip to the north. The volume of the Quaternary layer is proposed as the maximum depth for archaeological investigation with high chances to recover more Paleolithic material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The idea that jurists have a vocational duty to progressively develop the law finds its way in international law chiefly via the mission statement of the United Nations' International Law Commission (ILC). Mandated by states to codify and progressively develop international law, the ILC's modern practice has merged these two distinct exercises. The Commission utilizes a common working procedure for the elaboration of both and appears to perceive progressive development as an appurtenance of codification. What is more, progressive development has often been equated by the ILC with lex ferenda propositions and policy considerations. It is little wonder then that the ILC has never attempted to meaningfully analyse this aspect of its mandate. This article examines progressive development from a methodological standpoint and maintains that it is an exercise with self-standing importance. It argues that there are two ways to understand the ILC's mandate to progressively develop the law: either as 'progressive development stricto sensu ' or as 'legislation'. The difference between the two is methodological; 'progressive development stricto sensu ' is elaborated via an inductive methodology and principally justified by legal considerations. On the other side, in the case of 'legislation', provisions are principally justified by policy considerations and, hence, imbued with uncertainty regarding their methodological foundations. The article suggests that 'progressive development stricto sensu ' falls squarely within the ILC's legal mandate, while this will be the case with respect to 'legislation' only when the ILC is conscious of the question it sets out to answer and the requisite methodology that it employs to do so. To this end, the article lays down some basic methodological principles that the ILC should adhere to when engaging with topics of work where political considerations play a significant role in the development of the law. An identification of the responsible faults for the destructive earthquakes of 1894 in the Atalanti region was carried out by employing a novel application of 3D finite-difference wavefield modeling. Several faults proposed in the literature were tested in detailed 3D simulations, by also utilizing a detailed local 3D velocity model, as well as the local topography. The assessment of the most probable sources for these events was based on the correlation of reported damages with the distribution of the simulated peak ground acceleration. Furthermore, the distribution of the spectral amplitudes at higher frequencies that are related to the resonant frequencies of the local buildings on that time period was also used as an indicator. The general effect of the local 3D subsurface structure on the propagation of the wavefield and the spatial distribution of the ground motion was also investigated. The Malessina fault was identified as a probable source for the main event of 20/4/1894 based on the results of the 3D modeling, whereas the 3D effect was found to be a highly contributing factor to the distribution of the simulated ground motion. The purpose of this study is to develop a portable monitor that can measure the energy spectrum and dose of gamma-rays simultaneously in real time for the benefit of medical staff who must work in clinical radiation environments. For this purpose, we have developed a prototype monitor using a CsI (Tl) scintillator combined with a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC). For real-time measurement, we employed an improved sequential Bayesian estimation (k-α method) to convert the measured pulse height spectrum into an energy spectrum. Then we confirmed that reconstruction of the energy spectrum and dose estimation could simultaneously be carried out in real time by the k-α method in a radiation field composed of mixed standard gamma-ray sources. In this study, we carried out measurements in a background gamma-ray field to confirm applicability of the prototype monitor to the weakest type of radiation field. In addition, we conducted measurements in front of a nuclear fuel storage room (∼2 μSv/h) in the authors' laboratory to evaluate practicality of the monitor for measuring fields with a complex energy spectrum. As a result, it was found that the dose could be estimated in about 20 s after start of measurements even in the background field. For the energy spectrum, it was instantly reconstructed within 60 s in front of the fuel storage room. On the other hand, it could successfully be estimated within 10 min in the background gamma-ray field. Currently, the convergence of the energy spectrum is determined visually from time dependent change of the spectrum and dose.
