Abstract

The upgrade of the ALICE TPC will allow the experiment to cope with the high interaction rates foreseen for the forthcoming Run 3 and Run 4 at the CERN LHC. In this article, we describe the design of new readout chambers and front-end electronics, which are driven by the goals of the experiment. Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors arranged in stacks containing four GEMs each, and continuous readout electronics based on the SAMPA chip, an ALICE development, are replacing the previous elements. The construction of these new elements, together with their associated quality control procedures, is explained in detail. Finally, the readout chamber and front-end electronics cards replacement, together with the commissioning of the detector prior to installation in the experimental cavern, are presented. After a nine-year period of R&D, construction, and assembly, the upgrade of the TPC was completed in 2020., Comment: 88 pages, 60 figures

Abstract

A large Time Projection Chamber is the main device for tracking and charged-particle identification in the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. After the second long shutdown in 2019/20, the LHC will deliver Pb beams colliding at an interaction rate of about 50 kHz, which is about a factor of 50 above the present readout rate of the TPC. This will result in a significant improvement on the sensitivity to rare probes that are considered key observables to characterize the QCD matter created in such collisions. In order to make full use of this luminosity, the currently used gated Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers will be replaced. The upgrade relies on continuously operated readout detectors employing Gas Electron Multiplier technology to retain the performance in terms of particle identification via the measurement of the specific energy loss by ionization d$E$/d$x$. A full-size readout chamber prototype was assembled in 2014 featuring a stack of four GEM foils as an amplification stage. The performance of the prototype was evaluated in a test beam campaign at the CERN PS. The d$E$/d$x$ resolution complies with both the performance of the currently operated MWPC-based readout chambers and the challenging requirements of the ALICE TPC upgrade program. Abstract

Production of $d$, $t$, and $^3$He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters $B_2$ and $B_3$, as well as coalescence radii for $d$ and $^3$He were determined as a function of transverse mass at all energies., Comment: 22 pages, 29 figures, 8 tables, for submission to Phys. Abstract

Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size ($p+p$, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure $\Phi_{p_T}$ by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both $\Delta[P_T, N]$ and $\Sigma[P_T, N]$, with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. Abstract

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions ($\pi$) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure $\nu_{\text{\text{dyn}}}$[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of $\nu_{\text{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure $\sigma_{\text{dyn}}$. Moreover, $\nu_{\text{dyn}}$ was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,$\pi$] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.

Abstract

We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5\% most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158$A$~GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent $\phi_{2} = 0.96^{+0.38}_{-0.25}\text{ (stat.)}$ $\pm 0.16\text{ (syst.)}$ is consistent with the va\-lue expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass $\pi^+ \pi^-$ pairs in the same Si+Si collisions., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. Abstract

The momentum correlation between protons and lambda particles emitted from central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV was studied by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A clear enhancement is observed for small relative momenta (q_{inv} < 0.2 GeV). By fitting a theoretical model, which uses the strong interaction between the proton and the lambda in a given pair, to the measured data a value for the effective source size is deduced. Assuming a static Gaussian source distribution we derive an effective radius parameter of R_G = 3.02 \pm 0.20$(stat.)^{+0.44}_{-0.16}(syst.) fm., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities, strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the $(\mathrm{K}^+ + \mathrm{K}^-)/(\mathrm{p}+\bar{\mathrm{p}})$ and $\mathrm{K}^+/\mathrm{p}$ ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb+Pb collisions at 5 SPS energies between $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 6.3 GeV and 17.3 GeV. Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$, a measure of non-statistical fluctuations, around $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8 GeV. Below this energy, $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is positive, indicating higher fluctuation compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies, $\sigma_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons and protons. The results are compared to UrQMD calculations which which give a good description at the higher SPS energies, but fail to reproduce the transition to positive values., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Particle identification was obtained in the laboratory momentum range from 5 to 63 GeV/c by the measurement of the energy loss dE/dx in the TPC detector gas. The corresponding rapidity coverage extends 1.6 units from mid-rapidity into the forward hemisphere. Transverse mass spectra, the rapidity dependences of the average transverse mass, and rapidity density distributions were studied as a function of collision centrality. The values of the average transverse mass as well as the midrapidity yields of protons when normalized to the number of wounded nucleons show only modest centrality dependences. In contrast, the shape of the rapidity distribution changes significantly with collision centrality, especially at 40A GeV. Abstract

The design, construction, and commissioning of the ALICE Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) is described. It is the main device for pattern recognition, tracking, and identification of charged particles in the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The TPC is cylindrical in shape with a volume close to 90 m^3 and is operated in a 0.5 T solenoidal magnetic field parallel to its axis. In this paper we describe in detail the design considerations for this detector for operation in the extreme multiplicity environment of central Pb--Pb collisions at LHC energy. The implementation of the resulting requirements into hardware (field cage, read-out chambers, electronics), infrastructure (gas and cooling system, laser-calibration system), and software led to many technical innovations which are described along with a presentation of all the major components of the detector, as currently realized. We also report on the performance achieved after completion of the first round of stand-alone calibration runs and demonstrate results close to those specified in the TPC Technical Design Report., Comment: 55 pages, 82 figures

Abstract

New data on the production of protons, anti-protons and neutrons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The charged baryons are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system. Neutrons are detected in a forward hadronic calorimeter. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c (0 to 1.5 GeV/c) in transverse momentum and from -0.05 to 0.95 (-0.05 to 0.4) in Feynman x for protons (anti-protons), respectively. pT integrated neutron cross sections are given in the interval from 0.1 to 0.9 in Feynman x. Abstract

The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. Abstract

Production of d,t, and He3 nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies (sNN=6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters B2 and B3, as well as coalescence radii for d and He3 were determined as a function of transverse mass at all energies. © 2016 CERN.

Abstract

Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV/c, as well as in systems of different sizes (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure ΦpT by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations Δ[PT,N] and Σ[PT,N]. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both Δ[PT,N] and Σ[PT,N], with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) measurements in p+p collisions, as well as with predictions of The Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and EPOS models. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5 % most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158A GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent is consistent with the value expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass collisions. © 2015, The Author(s).

Abstract

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows one to measure the moments of the multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions (π), and electrons (e) in case of incomplete particle identification. Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure νdyn[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of νdyn agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure σdyn. However, νdyn[K,p] and νdyn[K,π] were found to depend on the phase-space coverage. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au + Au collisions. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

New data with a minimum bias trigger for 158 GeV/nucleon Pb + Pb have been analyzed. Directed and elliptic flow as a function of rapidity of the particles and centrality of the collision are presented. The centrality dependence of the ratio of elliptic flow to the initial space elliptic anisotropy is compared to models.

Abstract

New measurements by the NA49 experiment of the centrality dependence of event-by-event fluctuations of the particle yield ratios (K++K -)/(π++π-), (p+p̄) /(π++π-), and (K++K-)/ (p+p̄) are presented for Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The absolute values of the dynamical fluctuations of these ratios, quantified by the measure σdyn, increase by about a factor of two from central to semiperipheral collisions. Multiplicity scaling scenarios are tested and found to apply for both the centrality and the previously published energy dependence of the (K++K-)/(π++π-) and (p+p̄)/(π++π-) ratio fluctuations. A description of the centrality and energy dependence of (K++K -)/(p+p̄) ratio fluctuations by a common scaling prescription is not possible since there is a sign change in the energy dependence. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract

The NA49 results on hadron production obtained in PbPb collisions at SPS energies from 20 to 158 A GeV are shown and discussed as evidence for the onset of deconfinement. The primary measures are the pion yield, the kaon-to-pion ratio and the slope parameter of transverse mass distributions. The possible indication of the QCD critical point signatures was investigated in the event-by-event fluctuations of various observables such as the mean transverse momentum, particle multiplicity and azimuthal angle distributions as well as in the particle ratio fluctuations. The energy dependence of these observables was measured in central PbPb collisions in the full SPS energy range while for analysis of the system size dependence data from pp, CC, SiSi, and PbPb collisions at the top SPS energy were used. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Abstract

Production of fish in Serbia is insufficient despite of favorable climate properties. Dominant form of national aquaculture system is semi-intensive carp breeding. Except cereals, in the recent years extruded and pelleted feed are increasingly used for carp nutrition in Serbia. The aim of this study was to compare the lipid content and the fatty acid (FA) profile of carp (Cyprinus carpio) raised in carp fish farms with traditional breeding technology based on maize as well as complete extruded feed. Total lipids of fish fillets were extracted by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and FA profile was determined by gas-liquid chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector. Results were compared by multivariate data analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the total FA profile clearly differentiated carp according to diet. Carp fed maize contained higher amount of total lipids (8.59%) compared to carp fed extruded feed (4.71%). Content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) of two groups of carp was similar. Carp fed extruded feed had lower content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (42.43%) and higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (32.56%) than carp fed maize (61.78%, 12.99%, respectively). A higher content of n-6 (27.99%) and n-3 (4.57%) PUFA as well as better n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio (0.16) were found in carp fed extruded feed than in carp fed maize (11.75%, 1.24%, 0.10, respectively). Obtained results reveal that diet significantly influence the quality of carp flesh. Lipid content significantly decrease and PUFA content as well as n-3 to n-6 ratio increase when using extruded feed.

Abstract

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semicentral C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and from published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models (ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron-string dynamics), a percolation model, and the core-corona approach. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Production of the K*(892)0 and K*(892)0 resonances was studied via their K+π- and K-π+ decay modes in central Pb+Pb, Si+Si, C+C, and inelastic p+p collisions at 158A GeV(√sNN=17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum and rapidity distributions were measured and total yields were estimated. The yield of K* exceeds that of K * by about a factor of two in nucleus-nucleus reactions. The total yield ratios K*/+ and * / - are strongly suppressed in central Pb+Pb compared to p+p, C+C, and Si+Si collisions, in agreement with the expected attenuation of these short-lived resonance states in the hadronic phase of the expanding fireball. The UrQMD model, although incorporating such a scenario, does not provide a quantitative description of the experimental results. The statistical hadron gas model assuming the same freeze-out parameters for stable hadrons and resonances overestimates the * / ratios in central Pb+Pb collisions by about a factor of 2.5. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

Pion production in nuclear collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power laws in the behavior of correlations that are compatible with critical QCD. We analyzed interactions of nuclei of different sizes (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π+π- pairs with an invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ meson has no well-defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Results on Λ, Λ̄, and Ξ- production in centrality selected Pb+Pb reactions at 40A and 158A GeV and in near-central C+C and Si+Si reactions at 158A GeV are presented. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron string dynamics) and to the core-corona approach are performed. Although Λ and Λ̄ production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Ξ- measurements. However, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Λ and Ξ-, whereas it agrees less well with the Λ̄ data. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present measurements of the energy dependence of event-by-event fluctuations in the K/π and (p+p̄)/π multiplicity ratios in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, sNN, between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/π ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p̄)/π ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/π ratio fluctuations. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of pi+-, p, anti-p, and K+- in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at sqrt(sNN)=17.3 GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors RAA for pi+- and RCP for pi+-, p, anti-p, K+- were extracted and compared with results obtained at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV. The modification factor RAA shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor RCP, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the pi+- channel. The extracted RCP values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for pi+- above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Abstract
