30. Effects of maturity stages and fermentation of cocoa beans on total phenolic contents and antioxidant capacities in raw cocoa powder

Abstract

Consumption of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) and cocoa products is associated with numerous health benefits due to their high levels of polyphenols and antioxidant capacities. In this study, changes of total phenolic contents (TPC) and antioxidant capacities (AC) of raw cocoa powder at four maturity stages, under different fermentation methods and fermentation duration of cocoa beans were investigated. The TPC and AC were measured using Folin–Ciocalteu and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/ABTS assay, respectively. In term of maturity stages, the powder of unfermented cocoa beans harvested from the stage one contained significantly lower levels of TPC (6.39 ± 0.02 g CE/100 g DM) and AC (26.82 ± 0.13 mol TE/100 g DM) than those from the beans harvested from the stage two, three and four. For all maturity stages studied, fermenting cocoa beans increased antioxidant capacities of the raw cocoa powder. Cocoa fermentation using the commercial enzyme Pectinex® Ultra SP-L resulted in lower TPC but higher AC in comparison to those treated without enzymes, however prolonged fermentation time in cocoa beans significantly reduced TPC and AC in the powder. Strong correlations between TPC and AC of fermented samples with (R = 0.923) and without enzyme supplement (R = 0.942) were obtained. Two-way anova analyses showed that changes of TPC and AC of cocoa beans were dependent on maturity stages, fermentation methods and fermentation duration. As a conclusion, fermentation of cocoa beans harvested at the maturity stage two and three was found to be optimum for the high levels of AC and TPC attainment; fermented beans with commercial enzyme could be utilized to reduce labor cost by shortening the fermentation duration.

Abstract

Herein, we reported the composite structure of LiMnO2 and Li2MnO3 as a low-cost and environmentally benign cathode material. This composite with the main phase of LiMnO2 (90%) was synthesized by hydrothermal method at 220°C from LiOH and Mn(CH3COO)2 precursors. The obtained nanosized LiMnO2-LiMnO3 cathode material exhibits a high capacity of 265 mAh g-1 at C/10. The incorporation of Li2MnO3 into the LiMnO2 phase could stabilize the structure, leading to the improved cycle stability of the cathode. The capacity retention of the cathode was 93% after 80 cycles at C/2. Our results facilitate a potential strategy for developing high-performance cathode materials based on the Li-Mn-O system. The annual conference and scientific meeting of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand took place in Queenstown, New Zealand from 28th–29th August, 2014. The meeting was part of Queenstown Research Week, established in 1991, which includes the Queenstown Molecular Biology Meeting, the New Zealand Medical Sciences Congress, and the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists New Zealand Scientific Meeting. Various societies take part in the different meetings; this was the first year that the Nutrition Society of New Zealand was included. The theme of the Nutrition Society of New Zealand in 2014 was "Balancing Views". The plenary session "Weighing up the Evidence: Nutrition Controversies" was provided to address ongoing debate in New Zealand about the role of saturated fat in chronic disease, particularly cardiovascular disease. 49. Ti- and F- co-doped Li1.2Mn0.75Ni0.25O2as efficient cathode materials for Li-ion batteries

Abstract

Recently, the enhancement of electrochemical performance of Li- and Mn-rich layered cathodes by the co-doping method of cation and anion is under intense investigation. Therefore, Ti and F co-doped Li1.2Mn0.75Ni0.25O2cathode materials were synthesized and examined in this study. The Ti and F co-doping affects the phase structure and grain morphology of the pristine sample. Consequently, it improves cycle performance, Coulombic efficiency, and Li+diffusion coefficient number for the cathode. The doped sample can deliver a stable capacity of 180 mAh g−1with excellent capacity retention of 93 % after 150 cycles at C/2, higher than that of the pristine sample (80 % capacity retention). This work provides further evidence for the positive effect of the co-doping method on the enhancement of electrochemical performance in Li- and Mn-rich layered cathode materials.

Abstract

Abstract: Spherical-shaped, Tb3+/Al3+ codoped Gd2O3 phosphor particles were synthesized using a urea homogeneous precipitation method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy measurements confirmed the formation of nearly-uniform spherical particles with sizes in the range, 250±50nm. In this study we examined the effects of the Al3+ codoping concentration on the photoluminescence emission of Tb3+ doped Gd2O3 phosphor particles. The results confirmed that incorporating Al3+ into Gd2O3:Tb3+ phosphor is highly favorable for improving the emission of the synthesized Gd2O3:Tb3+ phosphor particles. In addition, the simple approach for the luminescence enhancement given here can be extended to the other phosphor systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
