Abstract

As an emerging communication auxiliary technology, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming 6G networks. Due to its total reflection characteristics, it is challenging to implement conventional channel estimation algorithms. This work focuses on RIS-assisted MIMO communications. Although many algorithms have been proposed to address this issue, there are still ample opportunities for improvement in terms of estimation accuracy, complexity, and applicability. To fully exploit the structured sparsity of the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels, we propose a new channel estimation algorithm called unitary approximate message passing sparse Bayesian learning with partial common support identification (UAMPSBL-PCI). Thanks to the mechanism of PCI and the use of UAMP, the proposed algorithm has a lower complexity while delivering enhanced performance relative to existing channel estimation algorithms. Extensive simulations demonstrate its excellent performance in various environments.

2. Interference Exploitation Precoding for Multi-Level Modulations: Closed-Form Solutions

Abstract

We study closed-form interference-exploitation precoding for multi-level modulations in the downlink of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. We consider two distinct cases: first, when the number of served users is not larger than the number of transmit antennas at the base station (BS), we mathematically derive the optimal precoding structure based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. By formulating the dual problem, the precoding problem is transformed into a pre-scaling operation using quadratic programming (QP) optimization. We further consider the case where the number of served users is larger than the number of transmit antennas at the BS. By employing the pseudo inverse, we show that the optimal solution of the pre-scaling vector is equivalent to a linear combination of the right singular vectors corresponding to zero singular values, and derive the equivalent QP formulation. We also present the condition under which multiplexing more streams than the number of transmit antennas is achievable. For both considered scenarios, we propose a modified iterative algorithm to obtain the optimal precoding matrix, as well as a sub-optimal closed-form precoder. Numerical results validate our derivations on the optimal precoding structures for multi-level modulations, and demonstrate the superiority of interference-exploitation precoding for both scenarios.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Disorders of sexual development can present isolated or as a part of complex genetic syndromes. CASE PRESENTATION: A newborn with ambiguous genitalia and prenatally diagnosed brain malformations was referred to our hospital. Prenatal ultrasound examination and MRI showed lissencephaly and absence of the corpus callosum. At admission, physical examination revealed microphallus, hypospadia and complete fusion of labioscrotal folds with nonpalpable gonads, normal blood pressure and serum biochemistry. Cortisol level was normal (201 nmol/L), testosterone elevated (14.4 nmol/L), FSH 0.1 IU/L, LH 0.7 IU/L, estradiol 241 pmol/L. Seizures were noted on the 2(nd) day and the child was started on anticonvulsives. When 17-OHP level results came back elevated (200 nmol/L), ACTH test was performed and the child was started on hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone treatment. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia became unlikely when karyotype result showed normal male karyotype (46, XY, SRY+) with no Mullerian structures seen on ultrasonographic exam. As association of ambiguous genitalia and lissencephaly strongly suggested a mutual genetic background, diagnosis of X-linked lissencephaly with ambiguous genitalia (X-LAG) became apparent. CONCLUSIONS. The presented case highlights the importance of looking at the whole clinical picture instead of separate isolated findings with emphasis on patient-centered approach guided by clinical findings and patient history.

Abstract

We propose a distributed spectrum access algorithm for cognitive radio relay net- works with multiple primary users (PU) and multiple secondary users (SU) utilizing multiple antennas at their transmitter. The overlay model is considered, where the PUs allow spectrum access opportunities for the SUs, in exchange for the SUs cooperatively relaying the PUs' data in exchange for both spectrum access and monetary compensation. We show that the PUs which utilize the SUs for cooperative relaying achieves a rate greater than what it would achieve without cooperative relaying, i.e., direct transmission, and thus motivates their participation in the proposed algorithm
