Abstract

Why do brothers, husbands, fathers and sons feel compelled to engage in violence and conflict? Why are women seen as being non-participants when they suffer so much? How are these concepts of gendered agency similar or different in the context of cultural and intercultural standpoints? With these questions in mind, the authors analyze news and propaganda images of the Balkan wars occurring at the end of the 20th Century to explore the intersecting and interrelated themes of gender and war through a grounded theory analysis. Beginning with the tragic memories of one of the authors that motivated this study and walking through the themes of symbiotic interrelationships between gendered roles and violence, promoted through iconic images during the conflict that perpetuated war, this study locates points of identity construction that reveal how an integrated and peaceful multi-ethnic society suddenly erupted into violence and hatred. Abstract

This study seeks to explain how "Little Mosque on the Prairie" renegotiates cultural identity and whether cultural identity and assimilation theories can provide an effective lens for interpreting the show's rhetorical tactics of identity reframing. Specifically, I study how the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's television situation comedy "Little Mosque on the Prairie" utilizes the mass mediated medium of entertainment programming to present Muslim-Canadian cultural identity and assimilation in a way that employs stereotypical differences to highlight underlying similarities which renegotiate frameworks through which Muslim Canadian identity is understood. Abstract

This study probed into the complex world of blogosphere. The sphere is much more complicated than what the popular media or previous research on blogs presented it to be. There were as many organizational blogs as personal blogs and more blogs depended on advertising/donation than on self-sponsorship. Judging from the distribution of online public opinions reflected in the weblogs, the blogosphere appears to be a fairly equitable place for both pro-life and pro-choice supporters. A sizable portion of the weblogs also exhibited neutrality to the issue, suggesting that it is not an all-out war in the cyberspace, when it comes to the abortion debate. Comparisons between abortion frames utilized by blogs affiliated to established media organizations and by other non-media blogs revealed little difference between the two. Abstract

This dissertation carries out a multi-level analysis of how media reports establish durable narratives of war in both journalism and scholarship, illustrating a multi-dimensional process of the weaponization of media. It draws on a case study of NATO’s attack on Yugoslavia in 1999, examining both news coverage and scholarly accounts, and with reference to relevant historical, institutional, economic and political contexts. The author conducts a grounded theory analysis of 1058 news articles appearing in the Associated Press, New York Times, and The Times (of London) surrounding the pivotal events of NATO’s military intervention in Kosovo. The ways in which these selected media represent the events and the relationship between their dominant narrative themes and the contexts in which the events occurred, is further examined, comparatively, by means of grounded theory analysis of how 4 major scholarly treatises craft an understanding of NATO intervention in Kosovo. Based on these analyses, this research argues that (a) media content foregrounds (and in various ways privileges) the frames, sources and narratives that correspond with the interests of NATO that drive military intervention and (b) these media narratives exercise a lingering influence on long-term conceptualizations of conflict and have the capacity to shape the contours of cultural memory for years to come. Emerging from this inquiry – which situates the interrelationships between media, power and military conflict within the context of political and economic environment – is the theory of a weaponization of media that moves beyond the scope of existing propaganda theories (and, in the context of propaganda, agenda-setting and framing theories) that explains to what end propaganda works and the ways in which the media system capacitates and enhances processes of propaganda.
