Search

Identifying and handling label errors can significantly enhance the accuracy of supervised machine learning models. Recent approaches for identifying label errors demonstrate that a low self-confidence of models with respect to a certain label represents a good indicator of an erroneous label. However, latest work has built on softmax probabilities to measure self-confidence. In this paper, we argue that -- as softmax probabilities do not reflect a model's predictive uncertainty accurately -- label error detection requires more sophisticated measures of model uncertainty. Therefore, we develop a range of novel, model-agnostic algorithms for Uncertainty Quantification-Based Label Error Detection (UQ-LED), which combine the techniques of confident learning (CL), Monte Carlo Dropout (MCD), model uncertainty measures (e.g., entropy), and ensemble learning to enhance label error detection. We comprehensively evaluate our algorithms on four image classification benchmark datasets in two stages. In the first stage, we demonstrate that our UQ-LED algorithms outperform state-of-the-art confident learning in identifying label errors. In the second stage, we show that removing all identified errors from the training data based on our approach results in higher accuracies than training on all available labeled data. Importantly, besides our contributions to the detection of label errors, we particularly propose a novel approach to generate realistic, class-dependent label errors synthetically. We analyze the quasiparticle interaction function (the fully dressed and antisymmetrized interaction between fermions) for a two-dimensional Fermi liquid at zero temperature close to a q=0 charge quantum critical point (QCP) in the $s-$wave channel (the one leading to phase separation). By the Ward identities, this vertex function must be related to quasiparticle residue $Z$, which can be obtained independently from the fermionic self-energy. We show that to satisfy these Ward identities, one needs to go beyond the standard diagrammatic formulation of Fermi-liquid theory and include series of additional contributions to the vertex function. These contributions are not present in a conventional Fermi liquid, but do emerge near a QCP, where the effective 4-fermion interaction is mediated by a soft dynamical boson. We demonstrate explicitly that including these terms restores the Ward identity. Our analysis is built on previous studies of the vertex function near an antiferromagnetic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 89, 045108 (2014)] and a d-wave charge-nematic QCP [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045110 (2010)]. We show that for $s-$wave charge QCP the analysis is more straightforward and allows one to obtain the full quasiparticle interaction function (the Landau function) near a QCP. We show that all partial components of this function (Landau parameters) diverge near a QCP, in the same way as the effective mass $m^*$, except for the $s$-wave charge component, which approaches $-1$. Consequently, the susceptibilities in all channels, except for the critical one, remain finite at a QCP, as they should., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Energy management, in sense of computing optimized operation schedules for devices, will likely play a vital role in future carbon neutral energy systems, as it allows unlocking energy efficiency and flexibility potentials. However, energy management systems need to be applied at large scales to realize the desired effect, which clearly requires minimization of costs for setup and operation of the individual applications. In order to push the latter forward, we promote an approach to split the complex optimization algorithms employed by energy management systems into standardized components, which can be provided as a service with marginal costs at scale. This work is centered around the systematic design of a framework supporting the efficient implementation and operation of such forecasting and optimization services. Furthermore, it describes the implementation of the design concept which we release under the name \emph{Energy Service Generics} as a free and open source repository. Finally, this paper marks the starting point of the \emph{Open Energy Services} community, our effort to continuously push the development and operation of services for energy management applications at scale, for which we invite researchers and practitioners to participate.

Intertwined charge and magnetic fluctuations in high-$T_\text{c}$ copper oxide superconductors (cuprates) are hypothesized to be a consequence of their correlated electronic nature. Among other observables, this is apparent in the doping dependence of incommensurate magnetic order, known as the Yamada relation (YR). We analyze the Hubbard model to challenge the universality of YR as a function of interaction strength $U$ through Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson (SB) mean-field theory and truncated unity functional renormalization group (TUFRG). While TUFRG tends to lock in to a doping dependence of the incommensurate magnetic ordering vector obtained for the perturbative weak-coupling limit, SB not only exhibits an enhanced sensitivity upon a variation of $U$ from weak to strong coupling, but also shows good agreement with experimental data. It supports the placement of weakly hole-doped cuprates in the intermediate-to-strong coupling regime.

We study magnetic and charge order in the electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates based on the one-band Hubbard model with onsite ($U$) and nearest-neighbor $(V)$ interactions. To investigate the interplay between the orders, we employ the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson method and analyze fluctuations descending from an antiferromagnetic parent state. Our analysis reveals incommensurate charge order whose ordering vector matches the doping-dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements in Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO). From our calculations of paramagnon dispersion as well as dynamical charge and spin structure factors, we reproduce all qualitative features of the RIXS signal., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, more condensed version

The need for algorithms able to solve Reinforcement Learning (RL) problems with few trials has motivated the advent of model-based RL methods. The reported performance of model-based algorithms has dramatically increased within recent years. However, it is not clear how much of the recent progress is due to improved algorithms or due to improved models. While different modeling options are available to choose from when applying a model-based approach, the distinguishing traits and particular strengths of different models are not clear. The main contribution of this work lies precisely in assessing the model influence on the performance of RL algorithms. A set of commonly adopted models is established for the purpose of model comparison. These include Neural Networks (NNs), ensembles of NNs, two different approximations of Bayesian NNs (BNNs), that is, the Concrete Dropout NN and the Anchored Ensembling, and Gaussian Processes (GPs). The model comparison is evaluated on a suite of continuous control benchmarking tasks. Our results reveal that significant differences in model performance do exist. The Concrete Dropout NN reports persistently superior performance. We summarize these differences for the benefit of the modeler and suggest that the model choice is tailored to the standards required by each specific application.

The effect of scattering of conduction electrons by dynamical spin fluctuations on the thermopower in metals near a thermal phase transition into an antiferromagnetic phase is considered. We are interested in a transition at room temperature, as has been studied in a heterostructure involving layers of IrMn. We show that the electrical resistivity exhibits a narrow but low peak at the transition, which may be difficult to detect on top of the main contributions induced by phonons and impurities. By contrast, the thermopower is found to exhibit a prominent peak both as a function of temperature T for fixed layer thickness tAFM and as a function of tAFM for fixed T: We conjecture that the transition temperature Tc is a function of both tAFM and the Fermi energy EF . Both dependencies give rise to a sharp peak of the thermopower as a function of T or tAFM near the transition. The estimated magnitude of the peak for the case of three-dimensional longitudinal spin fluctuations is in good agreement with experiment.

We present a comprehensive study of the 2D one-band Hubbard model applying the spin rotation invariant slave-boson method. We utilize a spiral magnetic mean field and fluctuations around a paramagnetic mean field to determine the magnetic phase diagram and find the two approaches to be in good agreement. Apart from the commensurate phases characterized by ordering wave vectors $\boldsymbol Q = (\pi, \pi), (0, \pi)$, and $(0, 0)$ we find incommensurate phases where the ordering wave vectors $\boldsymbol Q = (Q, Q)$, and $(Q, \pi)$ vary continuously with filling, interaction strength or temperature. The mean field quantities magnetization and effective mass are found to change discontinuously at the phase boundaries separating the $(Q, Q)$ and $(Q, \pi)$ phases, indicating a first order transition. The band structure and Fermi surface is shown in selected cases. The dynamic spin and charge susceptibilities as well as the structure factors are calculated and discussed, including the emergence of collective modes of the zero sound and Mott insulator type. The dynamical conductivity is calculated in dependence of doping, interaction strength and temperature. Finally, a temperature-interaction strength phase diagram is established.

Topological Kondo insulators are a rare example of an interaction-enabled topological phase of matter in three-dimensional crystals - making them an intriguing but also hard case for theoretical studies. Here, we aim to advance their theoretical understanding by solving the paradigmatic two-band model for topological Kondo-insulators using a fully spin-rotation invariant slave-boson treatment. Within a mean-field approximation, we map out the magnetic phase diagram and characterize both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases by their topological properties. Among others, we identify an antiferromagnetic insulator that shows, for suitable crystal terminations, topologically protected hinge modes. Furthermore, Gaussian fluctuations of the slave boson fields around their mean-field value are included in order to establish the stability of the mean-field solution through computation of the full dynamical susceptibility.

In our paper (W\"olfle and Balatsky, Phys. Rev. B 98, 104505 (2018)) we presented a microscopic theory of superconductivity for doped SrTiO$_{3}$ by proposing two pairing mechanisms acting simultaneously with relative strength depending on the closeness to the ferroelectric quantum critical point. The first mechanism rests on the dynamically screened Coulomb interaction, and the second assumed a coupling to the soft transverse optical phonon. In their comment Ruhman and Lee point out an error in our estimate of the deformation potential coupling to the soft mode. We agree that this type of coupling cannot explain the gigantic isotope effect observed experimentally, so that a different coupling mechanism needs to be found. As for the first pairing mechanism, Ruhman and Lee maintain the view expressed in their paper (Ruhman and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 94, 224515 (2016)) that the energy range over which the usual longitudinal optical phonon mediated interaction operates is limited by the Fermi energy. We object to this view and in this reply present evidence that the cutoff energy is much larger. In a weak coupling system such as SrTiO$_{3}$ the cutoff is given by the energy beyond which quasiparticles cease to be well defined., Comment: Reply on a Comment by J. Ruhman and P. Lee. We study charge transport through $N$-lead junctions ($N\geq 3$) of spinless Luttinger liquid wires with bias voltages applied to Fermi-liquid reservoirs. In particular, we consider a Y junction, which is a setup characteristic of the tunneling experiment. In this setup, the strength of electron-electron interactions in one of the arms ("tunneling tip") is different from that in the other two arms (which form together the "main wire"). For a generic single-particle $S$ matrix of the junction, we find that the bias voltage $V$ applied---even symmetrically---to the main wire generates a current proportional to $|V|$ in the tip wire. We identify two mechanisms of this nonequilibrium-induced "emergent chirality" in a setup characterized by the time-reversal and parity symmetric Hamiltonian of the junction. These are: (i) the emergence of an effective magnetic flux, which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and (ii) the emergence of parity-breaking asymmetry of the setup, both proportional to the interaction strength and the sign of the voltage. The current in the tip wire generated by mechanism (i) is reminiscent of the Hall current in the linear response of a system the Hamiltonian of which breaks time-reversal symmetry; however, in the absence of any magnetic field or a local magnetic moment. Similarly, mechanism (ii) can be thought of as an emergent "photogalvanic effect"; however, in the presence of inversion symmetry within the main wire. Motivated by recent experiments reporting superconductivity only at very low temperature in a class of heavy fermion compounds, we study the impact of energy fluctuations with small momentum transfer on the pairing instability near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. While these fluctuations, formed by composite spin fluctuations, were proposed to explain the thermodynamic and transport properties near the quantum critical point of compounds such as YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ at $x\approx0.1$, here they are found to strongly suppress $T_{c}$ of the $d$-wave pairing of the hot quasiparticles promoted by the spin fluctuations. Interestingly, if energy fluctuations are strong enough, they can induce triplet pairing involving the quasiparticles of the cold regions of the Fermi surface. Recent experiments on electron- or hole-doped SrTiO$_{3}$ have revealed a hitherto unknown form of superconductivity, where the Fermi energy of the paired electrons is much lower than the energies of the bosonic excitations thought to be responsible for the attractive interaction. We show that this situation requires a fresh look at the problem calling for (i) a systematic modeling of the dynamical screening of the Coulomb interaction by ionic and electronic charges, (ii) a transverse optical phonon mediated pair interaction and (iii) a determination of the energy range over which the pairing takes place. We argue that the latter is essentially given by the limiting energy beyond which quasiparticles cease to be well defined. The model allows to find the transition temperature as a function of both, the doping concentration and the dielectric properties of the host system, in good agreement with experimental data. The additional interaction mediated by the transverse optical soft phonon is shown to be essential in explaining the observed anomalous isotope effect. We develop the renormalization group theory of the conductances of N-lead junctions of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to N independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. Based on the perturbative results up to second order in the interaction we demonstrate that the conductances obey scaling. We calculate the conductances of a three-way junction of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to three independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. In particular, we consider the setup that is characteristic of a tunneling experiment, in which the strength of electron-electron interactions in one of the arms of the junction ("tunneling tip") is different from that in the other two arms (which together form a "main wire"). The scaling dependence of the two independent conductances on bias voltages is determined within a fermionic renormalization-group approach in the limit of weak interactions. The solution shows that, in general, the conductances scale with the bias voltages in an essentially different way compared to their scaling with the temperature $T$. Specifically, unlike in the two-terminal setup, the nonlinear conductances cannot be generically obtained from the linear ones by simply replacing $T$ with the "corresponding" bias voltage or the largest one. Remarkably, a finite tunneling bias voltage prevents the interaction-induced breakup of the main wire into two disconnected pieces in the limit of zero $T$ and a zero source-drain voltage., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We present a theory of the scaling behavior of the thermodynamic, transport and dynamical properties of a three-dimensional metal governed by $d$-dimensional fluctuations at a quantum critical point, where the electron quasiparticle effective mass diverges. We determine how the critical bosonic order parameter fluctuations are affected by the effective mass divergence. The coupled system of fermions and bosons is found to be governed by two stable fixed points: the conventional weak-coupling fixed point and a new strong-coupling fixed point, provided the boson-boson interaction is irrelevant. The latter fixed point supports hyperscaling, characterized by fractional exponents. An ordered state in the spin sector that breaks parity without breaking time-reversal symmetry, i.e., that can be considered as dynamically generated spin-orbit coupling, was proposed to explain puzzling observations in a range of different systems. Here we derive severe restrictions for such a state that follow from a Ward identity related to spin conservation. It is shown that $l=1$ spin-Pomeranchuk instabilities are not possible in non-relativistic systems since the response of spin-current fluctuations is entirely incoherent and non-singular. This rules out relativistic spin-orbit coupling as an emergent low-energy phenomenon. We illustrate the exotic physical properties of the remaining higher angular momentum analogues of spin-orbit coupling and derive a geometric constraint for spin-orbit vectors in lattice systems., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The magnetic orders in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ and $\alpha-$RuCl$_3$, honeycomb systems with strong spin-orbit coupling and correlations, have been recently described by models with the dominant Kitaev interactions. In this work we discuss how the orientation of magnetic order parameter is selected in this class of models. We show that while the order-by-disorder mechanism in the models with solely Kitaev anisotropies always select cubic axes as easy axes for magnetic ordering, the additional effect of other small bond-dependent anisotropies, such as, e.g., $\Gamma$-terms, lead to a deviation of the order parameter from the cubic directions. We show that both the zigzag ground state and the face-diagonal orientation of magnetic moments in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ can be obtained within the $J_1-K_1-J_2-K_2-J_3$ model in the presence of perturbatively small $\Gamma$-terms. We also show that the zigzag phase found in the nearest neighbor Kitaev-Heisenberg model, relevant for $\alpha-$RuCl$_3$, has some stability against the $\Gamma$-term., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

In this work, we propose a method for calculating the free energy of anisotropic quantum spin systems. We use the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to express the partition function of a generic bilinear super-exchange Hamiltonian in terms of a functional integral over classical time-dependent fields. In the general case the result is presented as an infinite series. The series may be summed up in the case of Ising-type models. For any ordered state we derive a compact expression for the contribution of Gaussian spin fluctuations to the free energy., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure

We analyze the three-point vertex function that describes the coupling of fermionic particle-hole pairs in a metal to spin or charge fluctuations at non-zero momentum. We consider Ward identities, which connect two-particle vertex functions to the self energy, in the framework of a Hubbard model. These are derived using conservation laws following from local symmetries. The generators considered are the spin density and particle density. It is shown that at certain antiferromagnetic critical points, where the quasiparticle effective mass is diverging, the vertex function describing the coupling of particle-hole pairs to the spin density Fourier component at the antiferromagnetic wavevector is also divergent. Then we give an explicit calculation of the irreducible vertex function for the case of three-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and show that it is proportional to the diverging quasiparticle effective mass .

Quantum criticality in systems of local moments interacting with itinerant electrons has become an important and diverse field of research. Here we review recent results which concern (a) quantum phase transitions in single-impurity Kondo and Anderson models and (b) quantum phase transitions in heavy-fermion lattice models which involve critical quasiparticles. We study the temperature-dependent quantum correction to conductivity due to the interplay of spin density fluctuations and weak disorder for a two-dimensional metal near an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point. AFM spin density fluctuations carry large momenta around the ordering vector $\mathbf{Q}$ and, at lowest order of the spin-fermion coupling, only scatter electrons between "hot spots" of the Fermi surface which are connected by $\mathbf{Q}$. Earlier, it was seen that the quantum interference between AFM spin density fluctuations and soft diffusive modes of the disordered metal is suppressed, a consequence of the large-momentum scattering. The suppression of this interference results in a non-singular temperature dependence of the corresponding interaction correction to conductivity. However, at higher order of the spin-fermion coupling, electrons on the entire Fermi surface can be scattered successively by two spin density fluctuations and, in total, suffer a small momentum transfer. This higher-order process can be described by composite modes which carry small momenta. We show that the interference between formally subleading composite modes and diffusive modes generates singular interaction corrections which ultimately dominate over the non-singular first-order correction at low temperatures. We derive an effective low-energy theory from the spin-fermion model which includes the above-mentioned higher-order process implicitly and show that for weak spin-fermion coupling the small-momentum transfer is mediated by a composite propagator. Employing the conventional diagrammatic approach to impurity scattering, we find the correction $\delta \sigma \sim +\ln^2 T$ for temperatures above an exponentially small crossover scale., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Several observed transport and thermodynamic properties of the heavy-fermion compound YbRh2Si2 in the quantum critical regime are unusual and suggest that the fermionic quasiparticles are critical, characterized by a scale-dependent diverging effective mass. A theory based on the concept of critical quasiparticles (CQP) scattering off antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in a strong-coupling regime has been shown to successfully explain the unusual existing data and to predict a number of so far unobserved properties. In this paper, we point out a new feature of a magnetic field-tuned quantum critical point of a heavy-fermion metal: anomalies in the transport and thermodynamic properties caused by the freezing out of spin-flip scattering of critical quasiparticles and the scattering off collective spin excitations. We show that a step-like behavior as a function of magnetic field of e.g. the Hall coefficient and magnetoresistivity results, which accounts quantitatively for the observed behavior of these quantities. That behavior has been described as a crossover line T*(H) in the T - H phase diagram of YbRh2Si2. Whereas some authors have interpreted this observation as signaling the breakdown of Kondo screening and an associated abrupt change of the Fermi surface, our results suggest that the T* line may be quantitatively understood within the picture of robust critical quasiparticles., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we propose a method for calculating the free energy of anisotropic classical spin systems. We use a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation to express the partition function of a generic bilinear super-exchange Hamiltonian in terms of a functional integral over classical time-independent fields. As an example, we consider an anisotropic spin-exchange Hamiltonian on the cubic lattice as is found for compounds with strongly correlated electrons in multiorbital bands and subject to strong spin-orbit interaction. We calculate the contribution of Gaussian spin fluctuations to the free energy. While the mean-field solution of ordered states for such systems usually has full rotational symmetry, we show here that the fluctuations lead to a pinning of the spontaneous magnetization along some preferred direction of the lattice., Comment: Results for the intermediate phase with minima and maxima "dancing" around each other, which were presented in Fig.2 and Fig.3 in the previous version of the paper, were wrong due to numerical error. The electrical current through an arbitrary junction connecting quantum wires of spinless interacting fermions is calculated in fermionic representation. The wires are adiabatically attached to two reservoirs at chemical potentials differing by the applied voltage bias. The relevant scale-dependent contributions in perturbation theory in the interaction up to infinite order are evaluated and summed up. The result allows one to construct renormalization group equations for the conductance as a function of voltage (or temperature, wire length). There are two fixed points at which the conductance follows a power law in terms of a scaling variable $\Lambda$, which equals the bias voltage $V$, if $V$ is the largest energy scale compared to temperature $T$ and inverse wire length $L^{-1}$, and interpolates between these quantities in the crossover regimes., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

In this work, we investigate the microscopic nature of the magnetism in honeycomb iridium-based systems by performing a systematic study of how the effective magnetic interactions in these compounds depend on various electronic microscopic parameters. We show that the minimal model describing the magnetism in A$_2$IrO$_3$ includes both isotropic and anisotropic Kitaev-type spin-exchange interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbor Ir ions, and that the magnitude of the Kitaev interaction between next-nearest neighbor Ir magnetic moments is comparable with nearest neighbor interactions. We also find that, while the Heisenberg and the Kitaev interactions between nearest neighbors are correspondingly antiferro- and ferromagnetic, they both change sign for the next-nearest neighbors. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations we examine the magnetic phase diagram of the derived super-exchange model. Zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order is found to occupy a large part of the phase diagram of the model and, for ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor Heisenberg interaction relevant for Na$_2$IrO$_3$, it can be stabilized even in the absence of third nearest neighbor coupling. Our results suggest that a natural physical origin of the zigzag phase experimentally observed in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is due to the interplay of the Kitaev anisotropic interactions between nearest and next-nearest neighbors., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Temperature dependent transport measurements on ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films reveal a heretofore unknown non-universal weak localization correction to the conductivity which extends to disorder strengths greater than 100 k$\Omega$ per square. The inelastic scattering of electrons off of gapped antiferromagnetic spin waves gives rise to an inelastic scattering length which is short enough to place the system in the 3d regime. The extracted fitting parameters provide estimates of the energy gap ($\Delta = 16$ K) and exchange energy ($\bar{J} = 320$ K)., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Motivated by recent experiments exploring the spin-orbit-coupled magnetism in $4d$- and $5d$-band transition metal oxides, we study magnetic interactions in Ir- and Rh-based compounds. In these systems, the comparable strength of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), crystal field splitting (CF) and Coulomb and Hund's coupling leads to a rich variety of magnetic exchange interactions, leading to new types of ground states. Using a strong coupling approach, we derive effective low-energy super-exchange Hamiltonians from the multi-orbital Hubbard model by taking full account of the Coulomb and Hund's interactions in the intermediate states. We find that in the presence of strong SOC and lattice distortions the super-exchange Hamiltonian contains various kinds of magnetic anisotropies. Here we are primarily interested in the magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_4$ compounds. We perform a systematic study of how magnetic interactions in these systems depend on the microscopic parameters and provide a thorough analysis of the resulting magnetic phase diagram. Comparison of our results with experimental data shows good agreement. Finally, we discuss the parameter space in which the spin-flop transition in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, experimentally observed under pressure, can be realized., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Recent experiments on two iron-pnictide families suggest the existence of a single quantum phase transition (QPT) inside the superconducting dome despite the fact that two separate transition lines - magnetic and nematic - cross the superconducting dome at $T_{c}$. Here we argue that these two observations are actually consistent. We show, using a microscopic model, that each order coexists with superconductivity for a wide range of parameters, and both transition lines continue into the superconducting dome below $T_{c}$. We calculate the conductances of a three-terminal junction set-up of spinless Luttinger liquid wires threaded by a magnetic flux, allowing for different interaction strength g_3 != g in the third wire. We employ the fermionic representation in the scattering state picture, allowing for a direct calculation of the linear response conductances, without the need of introducing contact resistances at the connection points to the outer ideal leads. The matrix of conductances is parametrized by three variables. For these we derive coupled renormalization group (RG) equations, by summing up infinite classes of contributions in perturbation theory. The resulting general structure of the RG equations may be employed to describe junctions with an arbitrary number of wires and arbitrary interaction strength in each wire. The fixed point structure of these equations (for the chiral Y-junction) is analyzed in detail. For repulsive interaction (g,g_3>0) there is only one stable fixed point, corresponding to the complete separation of the wires. For attractive interaction (g<0 and/or g_3<0) four fixed points are found, the stability of which depends on the interaction strength. We confirm our previous weak-coupling result of lines of fixed points for special values of the interaction parameters reaching into the strong coupling domain. We find new fixed points not discussed before, even at the symmetric line g=g_3, at variance with the results of Oshikawa et al. We present a theory of the scaling behavior of the thermodynamic, transport and dynamical properties of a three-dimensional metal at an antiferromagnetic critical point. We show how the critical spin fluctuations at the AFM wavevector q=Q induce energy fluctuations at small q, giving rise to a diverging quasiparticle effective mass over the whole Fermi surface. The coupling of the fermionic and bosonic degrees of freedom leads to a self-consistent relation for the effective mass, which has a strong coupling solution in addition to the well-known weak-coupling, spin-density-wave solution. We thereby use the recently-introduced concept of critical quasiparticles, employing a scale-dependent effective mass ratio m*/m and quasiparticle weight factor Z. As a consequence of the diverging effective mass the Landau Fermi liquid interaction is found to diverge in all channels except the critical one, causing important vertex corrections. The ensuing spin fluctuation spectrum obeys omega/T scaling. Our results are in good agreement with experimental data on the heavy fermion compounds YbRh2Si2$ and CeCu(6-x)Au(x) assuming 3D and 2D spin fluctuations, respectively., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, minor errors corrected, new section on scaling, more references

Anderson localization has been studied extensively for more than half a century. However, while our understanding has been greatly enhanced by calculations based on a small epsilon expansion in d = 2 + epsilon dimensions in the framework of non-linear sigma models, those results can not be safely extrapolated to d = 3. Here we calculate the leading scale-dependent correction to the frequency-dependent conductivity sigma(omega) in dimensions d <= 3. At d = 3 we find a leading correction Re{sigma(omega)} ~ |omega|, which at low frequency is much larger than the omega^2 correction deriving from the Drude law. The resonant-level model represents a paradigmatic quantum system which serves as a basis for many other quantum impurity models. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the non-equilibrium transport near a quantum phase transition in a spinless dissipative resonant-level model, extending earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 216803 (2009)]. A detailed derivation of a rigorous mapping of our system onto an effective Kondo model is presented. A controlled energy-dependent renormalization group approach is applied to compute the non-equilibrium current in the presence of a finite bias voltage V. In the linear response regime V ->0, the system exhibits as a function of the dissipative strength a localized-delocalized quantum transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. We address fundamental issues of the non-equilibrium transport near the quantum phase transition: Does the bias voltage play the same role as temperature to smear out the transition? What is the scaling of the non-equilibrium conductance near the transition? At finite temperatures, we show that the conductance follows the equilibrium scaling for V< T, while it obeys a distinct non-equilibrium profile for V>T. We furthermore provide new signatures of the transition in the finite-frequency current noise and AC conductance via the recently developed Functional Renormalization Group (FRG) approach. The generalization of our analysis to non-equilibrium transport through a resonant level coupled to two chiral Luttinger-liquid leads, generated by the fractional quantum Hall edge states, is discussed. Our work on dissipative resonant level has direct relevance to the experiments in a quantum dot coupled to resistive environment, such as H. We investigate the transport properties of itinerant electrons interacting with a background of localized spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase of the pyrochlore lattice. We find a residual resistivity at zero temperature due to the scattering of electrons by the static dipolar spin-spin correlation that characterizes the metallic Coulomb phase. As temperature increases, thermally excited topological defects, also known as magnetic monopoles, reduce the spin correlation, hence suppressing electron scattering. Combined with the usual scattering processes in metals at higher temperatures, this mechanism yields a non-monotonic resistivity, displaying a minimum at temperature scales associated with the magnetic monopole excitation energy. Our calculations agree quantitatively with resistivity measurements in Nd2Ir2O7, shedding light on the origin of the resistivity minimum observed in metallic spin-ice compounds., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the possibility of multi-band superconductivity in SrTiO$_{3}$ films and interfaces using a two-dimensional two-band model. In the undoped compound, one of the bands is occupied whereas the other is empty. As the chemical potential shifts due to doping by negative charge carriers or application of an electric field, the second band becomes occupied, giving rise to a strong enhancement of the transition temperature and a sharp feature in the gap functions, which is manifested in the local density of states spectrum. By comparing our results with tunneling experiments in Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$, we find that intra-band pairing dominates over inter-band pairing, unlike other known multi-band superconductors. Given the similarities with the value of the transition temperature and with the band structure of LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures, we speculate that the superconductivity observed in SrTiO$_{3}$ interfaces may be similar in nature to that of bulk SrTiO$_{3}$, involving multiple bands with distinct electronic occupations., Comment: revised expanded version
