The investigation determined the location to build a graphite commercial warehouse (GCW), derived from the fact that the only place of production of the input is the state of Sonora, the above complicates satisfying the internal and external market of consumers due to the times and the distances. The methodology applied to determine the location for the construction of the warehouse was by means of a macro and micro analysis of location, both contemplate the diagnosis of variables through the methods of critical factors and center of gravity. The results allowed obtaining the order of alternatives for the GCW are Querétaro, followed by San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes, and Durango. The conclusion is that the GCW must be built in the location of georeferenced coordinates (20 ° 49´40.32 "N, 100 ° 18´32.38" W) or its equivalent (20.827, -100.308), specifically in the municipality of Marquez for have optimal communication channels and be a strategic point for the distribution of the product.

Introducción. Actualmente el carcinoma de células basales y escamosas es tratado principalmente por medio de cirugía. En búsqueda de tratamientos que no invasivos se ha desarrollado el tratamiento tópico con 188Re que ha mostrado resultados terapéuticos satisfactorios. Sin embargo, en la actualidad solo se cuenta con descripciones bidimensionales de la distribución de dosis absorbida en la región blanco, lo que limita la información referente a la dosis absorbida (D)al tejido sano circundante. Por lo que el objetivo del presente trabajo es determinar con la técnica Monte Carlo la distribución tridimensional de la D en el tratamiento tópico con 188Re de carcinoma de células escamosas y basales. Metodología. El escenario de la simulación constó de una crema que contiene 188Re distribuido uniformemente, una lámina de plástico mylar, y un maniquí tipo voxel representando a la piel con un volumen de 2X2X0.1 cm3 y un tamaño de voxel de 100 µm por lado. Se analizaron las superficies de isodosis, así como las curvas en los cortes sagitales y transversales para describir la distribución de dosis. Resultados y Conclusión. El Índice de Homogeneidad revela la forma en que la homogeneidad disminuye a medida que aumenta la profundidad. Se reportan tablas con el tiempo de irradiación necesario para impartir una dosis de 50 Gy en un rango de 250-750 µm de profundidad. Con la configuración terapéutica descrita en este trabajo, que es la que se usa en la práctica clínica, se encontró que es posible dar un tratamiento para una profundidad de 250-650µm sin rebasar los límites de dosis absorbida recomendados para la epidermis; los cuales se rebasan si se alcanza la dosis prescrita a una profundidad 750 µm.

We report on the observation of Wannier-Stark ladders in the bending vibrations of elastic beams. By introducing a gradient in the length distribution of N weakly coupled beams, the elastic equivalent of the Wannier-Stark ladder is obtained in a system governed by two coupled second-degree differential equations, instead of the common wave equation, and whose oscillations are also dispersive and, above a certain critical frequency, occur with two wavelengths. We have measured for the first time, not only the spectrum of the ladders, but the wave amplitudes in this type of system, which are not directly accessible in quantum-mechanical systems, and we have found that the wavelengths are spatially localized and in good agreement with the theoretically predicted amplitudes. Due to the combination of differential equations and the boundary conditions imposed on the system, the Wannier-Stark ladder phenomenon occurs from the third band of states onwards, unlike other classical systems.

Objective To generate normative data on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the SDMT as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained 29-56% of the variance in SDMT scores. Although there were gender differences on the SDMT in Mexico, Honduras, Paraguay, and Guatemala, none of the four countries had an effect size greater than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in Latin America to create norms for the SDMT; this study will have an impact on the future practice of neuropsychology throughout the global region.

Objective To generate normative data on the Stroop Test across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the Stroop Test, as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained 14-36% of the variance in Stroop Word scores, 12-41% of the variance in the Stoop Color, 14-36% of the variance in the Stroop Word-Color scores, and 4-15% of variance in Stroop Interference scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women on the Stroop test, none of the countries had an effect size larger than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in Latin America to create norms for the Stoop Test in a Spanish-Speaking sample. This study will therefore have important implications for the future of neuropsychology research and practice throughout the region.

Objective To generate normative data on the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test- Revised (HVLT-R) across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the HVLT-R as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained 17- 45% of the variance in HVLT-R scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women in Guatemala on the HVLT-R, it was a small effect size. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions The results from this study will have a substantial impact on the practice of neuropsychology in Latin America, as this is the first normative multicenter study to develop norms for the HVLT-R in this region.

Objective To generate normative data on the Modified Card Sorting Test (M-WCST) across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the M-WCST as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained between 2-33% of the variance in M-WCST scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women from seven different countries on the M-WCST, the effect sizes were small. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in in Latin America aiming to create norms for the M-WCST; this study will have important implications for the future of neuropsychology in the region.

Objective To generate normative data on the Boston Naming Test (BNT) across 10 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,779 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the BNT as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained between 3-32% of the variance in BNT scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women for Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, and Bolivia on the BNT, none of the six countries had an effect size larger than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in Latin America to generate norms for the BNT; this study will have substantial repercussions for the practice of neuropsychology throughout the global region.

The natural fatty acids (5Z)-5-pentacosenoic and (9Z)-9-pentacosenoic acids were synthesized for the first time in eight steps starting from either 4-bromo-1-butanol or 8-bromo-1-butanol and in 20-58% overall yields, while the novel fatty acids 5-pentacosynoic and 9-pentacosynoic acids were also synthesized in six steps and in 34-43% overall yields. The ∆(5) acids displayed the best IC50's (24-38 µM) against the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme, comparable to nervonic acid (IC50 = 12 µM). The ∆(9) acids were not as effective towards HIV-RT with the (9Z)-9-pentacosenoic acid displaying an IC50 = 54 µM and the 9-pentacosynoic acid not inhibiting the enzyme at all. Fatty acid chain length and position of the unsaturation was important for the observed inhibition. None of the synthesized fatty acids were toxic (IC50 > 500 µM) towards peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Molecular modeling studies indicated the structural determinants underlying the biological activity of the most potent compounds. These results provide new insights into the structural requirements that must be present in fatty acids so as to enhance their inhibitory potential towards HIV-RT.

The first synthesis of C5-curcumin-fatty acid (C5-Curc-FA) conjugates was successfully performed. Through a two-step synthetic route, 10 analogs were synthesized for a structure–activity relationship (SAR) study. It was found that C5-Curc-FA conjugates containing either decanoic acid or palmitic acid moieties were cytotoxic against colorectal adenocarcinoma cell (CCL-229) at IC50s ranging from 22.5 to 56.1 μg/mL, being 5c the most active C5-Curc-FA conjugate. Our results strongly suggests that a decanoic acid moiety at the meta position in C5-Curc-FA conjugates is important for their anticancer activity effect. Possible mechanisms for the anticancer activity of C5-Curc-FA conjugates were also investigated including apoptosis induction, mitochondrial damage and caspases activation. It was shown that 5c inhibited the luminescence activity of NFκB, a key signaling molecule involved in cell apoptosis and cell proliferation, at IC50 = 18.2 μg/mL. In addition, it was demonstrated that 5c displayed significant apoptotic effect at GI50 = 46.0 μg/mL in colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (ATCC CCL-222), which can be explained by the significant mitochondrial membrane permeabilization and caspases 3 and 7 activation effect of 5c. Finally, it was investigated that C5-Curc-FA conjugates can affect the replication process of cancer cells, since compounds 5c, 5e, and 6c inhibited the relaxing activity of the human DNA topoisomerase I at minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) that range from 50 to 250 μg/mL. Our results strongly support the hypothesis that the inhibition of both NFκB and DNA topoisomerase I by C5-Curc-FA conjugates is associated with their anticancer activity.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition has been described as the main mechanism of organophosphate (OP)-evoked toxicity. OPs represent a human health threat, because chronic exposure to low doses can damage the developing brain, and acute exposure can produce long-lasting damage to adult brains, despite post-exposure medical countermeasures. Although the main mechanism of OP toxicity is AChE inhibition, several lines of evidence suggest that OPs also act by other mechanisms. We hypothesized that rat neural progenitor cells extracted on embryonic day 14.5 would be affected by constant inhibition of AChE from chronic exposure to OP or pyri-dostigmine (a reversible AChE blocker) during differentiation. In this work, the OP paraoxon decreased cell viability in concentrations >50 μM, as measured with the MTT assay; however, this effect was not dose-dependent. Reduced viability could not be attributed to blockade of AChE activity, since treatment with 200 μM pyri-dostigmine did not affect cell viability, even after 6 days. Although changes in protein expression patterns were noted in both treatments, the distribution of differentiated phenotypes, such as the percentages of neurons and glial cells, was not altered, as determined by flow cytometry. Since paraoxon and pyridostigmine each decreased neurite outgrowth (but did not prevent differentiation), we infer that developmental patterns may have been affected.

A study was performed in order to understand the development of digestive enzymes during initial ontogeny of Cichlasoma trimaculatum, for which the activity of acidic and alkaline proteases, lipases, amylases and phosphatases was determined by means of biochemical and electrophoretic analysis. Our results showed that the activity of alkaline proteases, trypsin and chymotrypsin is present from day 6 after hatching (dah) during exogenous feeding with Artemia nauplii. The activities of carboxypeptidase A and leucine aminopeptidase are present from the first days, increasing at 6 dah and reaching their maximum activity at 9 dah while acid protease activity started at 9 dah. Furthermore, the lipase activity is detected on 6 dah and keeps increasing and decreasing on 17 dah. Amylase activity is detected on 3 dah, presenting fluctuations until 45 dah, where it reaches its maximum activity. Acid and alkaline phosphatases are detected from 3 dah and reach a maximum activity between 13 and 19 dah. The SDS-PAGE electrophoresis revealed six types of bands in the alkaline proteases, with molecular weight between 113.4 and 20.4 kDa. First three bands appear on 6 dah, but it is until 11 dah when all isoforms appear. Based on these results, it is considered that this species completes its digestive enzymatic machinery from day 9 after hatching, therefore is recommended to perform the transition from live feed to inert feed at 15 dah.

The first study aimed at determining the structural characteristics needed to prepare antibacterial 2-alkynoic fatty acids (2-AFAs) was accomplished by synthesizing several 2-AFAs and other analogues in 18-76% overall yields. Among all the compounds tested, the 2-hexadecynoic acid (2-HDA) displayed the best overall antibacterial activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 15.6 μg/mL), Staphylococcus saprophyticus (MIC = 15.5 μg/mL), and Bacillus cereus (MIC = 31.3 μg/mL), as well as against the Gram-negative Klebsiella pneumoniae (7.8 μg/mL) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 125 μg/mL). In addition, 2-HDA displayed significant antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300 (MIC = 15.6 μg/mL) and clinical isolates of MRSA (MIC = 3.9 μg/mL). No direct relationship was found between the antibacterial activity of 2-AFAs and their critical micelle concentration (CMC) suggesting that the antibacterial properties of these fatty acids are not mediated by micelle formation. It was demonstrated that the presence of a triple bond at C-2 as well as the carboxylic acid moiety in 2-AFAs are important for their antibacterial activity. 2-HDA has the potential to be further evaluated for use in antibacterial formulations.

a b s t r a c t The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of processing parameters on functional properties of extruded and tubular films. Four formulations of sorghum starch, with glycerol, and Yucca Schidigera extract, were used to prepare extruded and tubular films. Based on mechanical testing the formulation of 78.5% sorghum starch, 20% glycerol and 1.5% Yucca Schidigera extract, with 20% moisture content, showed the best mechanical properties and was selected to evaluate the effect of barrel temperature and screw speed during the fabrication of tubular films. Background: Dendritic cells (DCs) are responsible for the activation of T cells and B cells. There is accumulating evidence that psychoactive substances such as alcohol can affect immune responses. We hypothesize that this occurs by modulating changes in proteins triggering a process known as unfolded protein response (UPR). This process protects cells from the toxic effects of misfolded proteins responsible for causing endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Although much is known about ER stress, little is understood about the consequences of ethanol use on DC’s protein expression. Methods: In this study, we investigated alterations in the proteins of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDC) treated with 0.1% of alcohol by two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry, protein identification, and confirmation at the gene expression level by qRT-PCR. Results: Proteomes of related samples demonstrated 32 differentially expressed proteins that had a 2-fold or greater change in expression (18 spots were up-regulated and 14 were down-regulated), compared to the control cultures (untreated cells). Alcohol significantly changed the expression of several components of the UPR stress-induced pathways that include chaperones, ER stress, antioxidant enzymes, proteases, alcohol dehydrogenase, cytoskeletal and apoptosis-regulating proteins. qRT-PCR analyses highlighted the enhanced expression of UPR and antioxidant genes that increased (18 hours) with alcohol treatment. Conclusion: Results of these analyses provide insights into alcohol mechanisms of regulating DC and suggest that alcohol induced specifically the UPR in DC. We speculate that activation of a UPR by alcohol may protect the DC from oxidant injury but may lead to the development of alcohol-related diseases.

Alcohol is the most widely abused substance and its chronic consumption causes neurobehavioral disorders. It has been shown that alcohol affects the function of immune cells. Dendritic cells (DC) serve as the first line of defense against infections and are known to accumulate neurotransmitters such as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). The enzyme monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) degrades 5-HT that is associated with clinical depression and other neurological disorders. 5-HT is selectively transported into neurons through the serotonin transporter (SERT), which is a member of the sodium- and chloride-dependent neurotransmitter transporter (SLC6) family. SERT also serves as a receptor for psychostimulant recreational drugs. It has been demonstrated that several drugs of abuse such as amphetamine and cocaine inhibit the SERT expression; however, the role of alcohol is yet to be elucidated. We hypothesize that alcohol can modulate SERT and MAO-A expression in DC, leading to reciprocal downregulation of 5-HT in extracellular medium.Dendritic cells were treated with different concentrations (0.05% to 0.2%v/v) of alcohol for 24-72 hours and processed for SERT and MAO-A expression using Q-PCR and Western blots analysis. In addition, SERT function in DC treated with alcohol both in the presence and absence of imipramine, a SERT inhibitor was measured using 4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide uptake assay. 5-HT levels in culture supernatant and intracellular 5-hydroxy indole acetic acid (5-HIAA) and cyclic AMP were also quantitated using ELISA.Dendritic cells treated with 0.1% alcohol for 24 hours showed significant upregulation of SERT and MAO-A expression compared with untreated DC. We also observed that 0.1% alcohol enhanced the function of SERT and decreased extracellular 5-HT levels compared with untreated DC cultures, and this was associated with the elevation of intracellular 5-HIAA and cyclic AMP levels.Our study suggests that alcohol upregulates SERT and MAO-A by elevating cyclic AMP, which may lead to decreased concentration of 5-HT in the extracellular medium. As 5-HT is a major neurotransmitter and an inflammatory mediator, its alcohol-mediated depletion may cause both neurological and immunological deregulation.

Previous studies have demonstrated that infection with HIV-1 clades might differentially contribute to the neuropathogenesis of HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD). HIV-1 transactivator regulatory protein (Tat) plays a major role in the process of disruption of neuronal function. It is not well understood how these HIV-1 subtypes exert different neuropathogenic effects. Activation of indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), the rate-limiting enzyme of the kynurenine pathway, leads to increased tryptophan catabolism and the generation of neurotoxins such as kynurenine (KYN). It is known that KYN plays a crucial role in the neuropathogenesis of HAD. We hypothesize that HIV-1 clade B and C Tat proteins might exert differential effects on human primary astrocytes by the upregulation of the IDO gene and protein expression as well as its activity and production of the neurotoxin KYN. RNA extracted from human primary astrocytes treated with either HIV-1 clade B and C Tat proteins was reverse transcribed and analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR to determine IDO gene expression. In addition, the enzymatic activity of IDO and the concentration of KYN were measured in cell lysates and culture supernatants. Our results indicate that HIV-1 clade B Tat protein significantly upregulated the IDO gene and protein expression, IDO enzyme activity, as well as KYN concentration compared to HIV-1 clade C Tat protein. Thus, our studies for the first time demonstrate that HIV-1 clade B Tat protein in human primary astrocytes appears to increase the level of neuropathogenic agents, such as IDO and KYN, as compared to HIV-1 clade C Tat protein. These results provide further evidence that the prevalence of HAD may be correlated with the difference in clades of HIV-1.

We have shown previously that whereas acute exposure of cultured murine peritoneal macrophages inhibits phagocytosis, chronic exposure results in a putative tolerant/dependent state. We now report similar observations using human cultured monocyte-derived macrophages (hMDM) from a control population and from methadone patients. With hMDM, acute exposure to morphine and methadone inhibited phagocytosis in a dose-dependent manner. In contrast, chronic exposure resulted in eventual normalization of phagocytosis, indicating that a putative tolerant state to the opiates had developed. When opiates were withdrawn from chronically-exposed, tolerized hMDM, phagocytosis was once again depressed. The duration of withdrawal-induced depression lasted several hours, which is much longer than evidenced previously with murine macrophages. These data identify well with various in vivo studies on immune effects of opiate withdrawal; and, in so-doing, supplement ongoing speculation that opiate withdrawal is likely to have serious impact on host defenses of street heroin addicts.

Partial immune restoration may be obtained with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), but specific anti-HIV-1 immune responses do not appear to improve substantially. We have demonstrated that a soluble factor(s) induced by a mixture of inactivated influenza and bacterial vaccines called polyantigenic immunomodulator (PAI), possesses strong immunoregulatory and anti- HIV-1 activities. In the present study, we show that culture fluids from both PAI-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and CD8+ T-cells of HIV-1 infected patients were able to suppress HIV-1 replication in an MHC-unrestricted fashion. The PAI-induced antiviral activity was eliminated when culture fluids were pre-heated at 100°C for 10 min. and it is associated with induction of IFN-γ, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, and RANTES production, but inhibition of IL-10. Furthermore, this induction is dependent on the immunological status (CD4:CD8 ratio) of the HIV-1 infected patient. Taken together, our results suggest that the MHC-unrestricted HIV-1 suppression that is induced by culture fluids from PAI-stimulated PBMC may result from the stimulation of immune cell subpopulations to produce a heat-labile antiviral soluble factor(s), which in turn modulate cytokine and β-chemokine production. The identification of this PAI-induced soluble factor(s) may have major therapeutic potential.

CD8+ T cells play a major role in controlling HIV-1 infection through the release of soluble lytic and non-lytic antiviral factors. Their decrease or defective function contributes to the HIV-1 disease progression. HIV-1 disease progression has been associated with a remarkable increase of CD38 expression on CD8+ T-cells. It has been also documented that a significant distribution of HIV-specific CD8+T-cells resides in the CD8+CD38+ T-cell sub-population. The failure of HIV-specific CD8+CD38+ T-cells to control HIV-1 infection has been attributed to several mechanisms including apoptosis. However, the relationship between the CD38 expression and molecular events involved in CD8+ T-cell apoptosis is not well understood. Using four-color flow cytometric analysis, the present cross-sectional study we evaluated the expression of four membrane-associated apoptosis-related molecules (TNFR-1, Annexin-V, CXCR4, and CD95) and two cytoplasm-associated apoptosis-related molecules (Bcl-2 and the active form caspase-3) in 41 HIV-1 positive patients and 15 HIV-1 negative individuals. Flow cytometric analysis made on freshly isolated PBMC showed that HIV-1 infection alters the level of expression of CD38, CD95, CXCR4, Bcl-2 and active caspase-3. No significant change in the expression of Annexin V or TNFR-1 was found. A positive correlation was established between CD95, CXCR4, and active caspase-3 expression with low CD4 count and high plasma viremia and CD38 expression. Data suggest that the majority of activated CD8+CD38+ T-cells were apoptotic because they expressed active caspase-3 and the rest of these cells were highly susceptible to become apoptotic since they co-expressed CD95 and CXCR4. Results also suggest that one of the most likely HIV-mediated apoptosis mechanisms is via CD95 and CXCR4 induction through the caspase cascade despite the expression of Bcl-2. All these observations may provide an additional explanation of why HIV-1 infection is not fully contained by HIV-specific CD8+CD38+ T-cells leading to HIV-1 disease progression.

Objective To generate normative data on the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCF) across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the ROCF as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models explained 7-34% of the variance in ROCF copy scores and 21-41% of the variance in immediate recall scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women on ROCF copy and immediate recall scores, none of the countries had an effect size larger than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions The present study is the first to create norms for the ROCF in Latin America. As a result, this study will have important implications for the formation and practice of neuropsychology in this region.

Objective To generate normative data on the Trail Making Test (TMT) across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Honduras, Chile, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Bolivia. Each subject was administered the TMT as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models for the TMT-A explained 23- 50% of the variance, and the final multiple linear models for the TMT-B explained 22- 49% of the variance. Although there were gender differences on the TMT in Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, and Honduras, only Honduras had an effect size greater than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were generated for the Trail Making Test-A, but not B, in this country. Conclusions The present study is the first to create norms for the TMT in Latin America. As a result, this study will have important implications for the practice of neuropsychology in the future.

Objective To generate normative data for the Verbal Fluency Tests across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate. Method The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the Verbal Fluency Test as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms. Results The final multiple linear regression models for the letter F explained 8-30% of the variance, 7-32% for letter A, 8-32% for the letter S, and 16-43% for the animal category in Verbal Fluency Test scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women on the Verbal Fluency Test, they did not have an effect size larger than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated. Conclusions This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in Latin America aiming to create norms for the Verbal Fluency Test; this study will have important outcomes for the future of neuropsychology in the region.

The first total synthesis of a C5-Curcumin-2-Hexadecynoic Acid (C5-Curc-2-HDA, 6) conjugate was successfully performed. Through a three-step synthetic route, conjugate 6 was obtained in 13 % overall yield and tested for antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Our results revealed that 6 was active against eight MRSA strains at MICs that range between 31.3 and 62.5 μg/mL. It was found that the presence of 2-hexadecynoic acid (2-HDA, 4) in conjugate 6 increased 4-8-fold its antibacterial activity against MRSA strains supporting our hypothesis that the chemical connection of 4 to C5-Curcumin (2) increases the antibacterial activity of 2 against Gram-positive bacteria. Combinational index (CIn) values that range between 1.6 and 2.3 were obtained when eight MRSA strains were treated with an equimolar mixture of 2 and 4. These results demonstrated that an antagonistic effect is taking place. Finally, it was investigated whether conjugate 6 can affect the replication process of S. aureus, since this compound inhibited the supercoiling activity of the S. aureus DNA gyrase at minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 250 μg/mL (IC50 = 100.2 ± 13.9 μg/mL). Moreover, it was observed that the presence of 4 in conjugate 6 improves the anti-topoisomerase activity of 2 towards S. aureus DNA gyrase, which is in agreement with results obtained from antibacterial susceptibility tests involving MRSA strains.

Gallstone disease is a main public health problem. The overall prevalence data range from 3.9% in the pre-echographic era to 13.7% when ultrasonography was used as a diagnostic tool. This study is aimed to determine the prevalence of gallstone disease in a medium income level population in Lima, as well as the relationship with some risk factors: age, sex, familiar history and obesity. A total of 534 adult men and women from a medium economic level underwent ultrasonographic examination of abdomen for detection of gallstone disease (July 2003). The echographic evaluation was performed by 10 general surgeons trained in ultrasonography. Likewise, 4 risk factors--age, gender, familial history, and obesity--were analyzed. Pearson chi2 test (2-sided) was used with a probability of0.05 for statistical significance and logistic regression analyses for assessment of confounding factors. The prevalence founded was 15%. Eighty-one of 534 participants had lithiasis. Compared to the age group under 30, the odds ratio for the 31 to 50 years and50 years of age group was 0.9 and 1.1, respectively. The female-male ratio was 1.07 and the odds ratio 0.8. The prevalence of gallstone disease in people reporting a first-degree relative with lithiasis was 21%, whereas in participants without such a condition, it was 13%. On the other hand, a familial history was present in 38% of the lithiasis group and in 25% of the nonlithiasis group. The odds ratio for familial history was 1.8 (P = 0.01, 95% confidence interval 1.1-2.9). The prevalence of the disease for body mass index24, 25 to 29, and higher than 30 was 17%, 14% and 13%, respectively. Compared to the reference group (body mass index24), the other 2 groups (body mass index 25-29 and30) both had a similar odds ratio, 0.8. Logistic regression analyses showed an odds ratio of 1.9 for familiar history (95% confidence interval 1.1-3.2), whereas the odds ratio of the overweight (body mass index 25-29) and obese group (body mass index30) when compared to the normal group, BMI24, was 0.7 and 0.9, respectively. The prevalence data for gallstone disease remain slightly higher than those previously reported. Although the familiar history was the only characteristic with a statistically significant positive relationship with lithiasis, additional studies are needed because few biases could not be completely avoided and some confounding factors were not controlled.

Few preclinical studies have compared the relative therapeutic efficacy of medications used to treat opiate addiction in relation to neuroAIDS. Here we compare the ability of methadone and buprenorphine, and the prototypic opiate morphine, to potentiate the neurotoxic and proinflammatory ([Ca2+]i, ROS, H2O2, chemokines) effects of HIV-1 Tat in neuronal and/or mixed-glial co-cultures. Repeated observations of neurons during 48 h exposure to combinations of Tat, equimolar concentrations (500 nM) of morphine, methadone, or buprenorphine exacerbated neurotoxicity significantly above levels seen with Tat alone. Buprenorphine alone displayed marked neurotoxicity at 500 nM, prompting additional studies of its neurotoxic effects at 5 nM and 50 nM concentrations ± Tat. In combination with Tat, buprenorphine displayed paradoxical, concentration-dependent, neurotoxic and neuroprotective actions. Buprenorphine neurotoxicity coincided with marked elevations in [Ca2+]i, but not increases in glial ROS or chemokine release. Tat by itself elevated the production of CCL5/RANTES, CCL4/MIP-1β, and CCL2/MCP-1. Methadone and buprenorphine alone had no effect, but methadone interacted with Tat to further increase production of CCL5/RANTES. In combination with Tat, all drugs significantly increased glial [Ca2+]i, but ROS was only significantly increased by co-exposure with morphine. Taken together, the increases in glial [Ca2+]i, ROS, and neuroinflammatory chemokines were not especially accurate predictors of neurotoxicity. Despite similarities, opiates displayed differences in their neurotoxic and neuroinflammatory interactions with Tat. Buprenorphine, in particular, was partially neuroprotective at a low concentration, which may result from its unique pharmacological profile at multiple opioid receptors. Overall, the results reveal differences among addiction medications that may impact neuroAIDS.

Background: Many plant-derived products exhibit potent chemopreventive activity against animal tumor models as well as rodent and human cancer cell lines. They have low side effects and toxicity and presumably modulate the factors that are critical for cell proliferation, differentiation, senescence and apoptosis. The present study investigates the effects of some medicinal plant extracts from generally recognized as safe plants that may be useful in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Methods: Clonogenic assays using logarithmically-growing cells were performed to test the effect. The cytotoxic effects of Curcuma longa and Zingiber offi cinale were studied using sulforhodamine B assay, tetrazolium dye assay, colony morphology and microscopic analysis. Results: Out of the 13 lyophilized plant-derived extracts evaluated for growth-inhibitory effects on the PC-3M prostate cancer cell line, two extracts derived from C. longa and Z. offi cinale showed signifi cant inhibitory effects on colonyforming ability. The individual and augmentative effects of these two extracts were tested for their narrow range effective lower concentration on PC-3M in clonogenic assays. At relatively lower concentrations, C. longa showed signifi cant inhibition of colony formation in clonogenic assays; whereas at same concentrations Z. offi cinale showed only moderate inhibitory effects. However, when both the agents were tested together at the same concentrations, the combined effects were much more signifi cant than their individual ones. On normal prostate epithelial cells both C. longa and Z. offi cinale had similar effects but at a lower magnitude. These observations were confi rmed by several cytotoxicity assays involving the morphological appearance of the colonies, microscopic observations, per cent inhibition in comparison to control by sulforhodamine B and tetrazolium dye assay. Conclusions: From these observations, it was concluded that the combined effects of C. longa and Z. offi cinale are much greater than their individual effects, suggesting the role of multiple components and their synergistic mode of actions to elicit stronger benefi cial effects.

Taking into account the wide variety of geological structures in Colombia, we took a collection of samples both from sand beaches and high mountains systems and determined their concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K using a high resolution gamma spectrometry system. The results show a variation of these concentrations for the different samples that we associate with the soil type and the environmental conditions of the chosen regions. We also compare our results with other studies carried out in regions with similar geological conditions.

The US is currently experiencing an epidemic of methamphetamine (Meth) use as a recreational drug. Recent studies also show a high prevalence of HIV-1 infection among Meth users. We report that Meth enhances HIV-1 infectivity of dendritic cells as measured by multinuclear activation of a galactosidase indicator (MAGI) cell assay, p24 assay, and LTR-RU5 amplification. Meth induces increased HIV-1 infection in association with an increase in the HIV-1 coreceptors, CXCR4 and CCR5, and infection is mediated by downregulation of extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK2) and the upregulation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). A p38 inhibitor (SB203580) specifically reversed the Meth-induced upregulation of the CCR5 HIV-1 coreceptor. The dopamine D2 receptor antagonist RS +/- sulpiride significantly reversed the Meth-induced upregulation of CCR5, demonstrating that the Meth-induced effect is mediated via the D2 receptor. These studies report for the first time that Meth fosters HIV-1 infection, potentially via upregulating coreceptor gene expression. Further, Meth mediates its regulatory effects via dopamine receptors and via downregulating ERK2 with a reciprocal upregulation of p38 MAPK. Elucidation of the role of Meth in HIV-1 disease susceptibility and the mechanism through which Meth mediates its effects on HIV-1 infection may help to devise novel therapeutic strategies against HIV-1 infection in high-risk Meth-using HIV-1-infected subjects.

Steinert's myotonic dystrophy (SMD) is a systemic-type dominant autosomal disease, with variable clinical expression. Recent magnetic resonance studies conducted in patients with this disease have described the presence of lesions in the white matter of the brain and there have also been reports of a correlation between these and the presence of cognitive disorders. Nevertheless, very little work has been published about the electroencephalographic (EEG) findings in this disease.In this study both conventional and quantitative EEG were performed on 10 patients with SMD aged between 17 and 50 years.90% of the patients showed a posterior alpha rhythm that was disorganised but which reacted on opening and closing the eyes, as well as the presence of continuous theta activity over the base activity that was bilaterally more pronounced towards the frontal-central regions. In the quantitative analysis we observed an increase in the absolute energies for the slow bands and a decrease for the fast bands on the frequency spectrum. In most patients (80%) spectral peaks were found within the theta range of frequencies as a correlate of the slow activity observed in the conventional analysis.It can be concluded that a quantitative EEG could be useful in the study of what, for many years, has been considered to be a 'neuromuscular' disease and that the use of other more precise methods, such as cerebral coherence and brain electrical tomography, could shed new light on the functional management of these patients.

De esta manera, Bryce amplía los límites del realismo urbano, que ocupó a tantos escritores peruanos de las décadas de 1950 y 1960, para abordar diferentes patrones de realidad que también reflejan la crisis de la sociedad actual.

Legionnaires' disease is a severe, often fatal pneumonia, caused by Legionella pneumophila. Its incidence is reported about 6%. In Puerto Rico, there is no data available of the prevalence of Legionnaires' disease. A case of Legionnaires' is presented as well as data to support that the prevalence in our Island is higher than the reported elsewhere.

To evaluate the utility of the substituted judgement standard in terminally ill patients by determining agreement between patients, family proxies and physicians.Several studies have addressed the utility of substituted judgement, showing conflicting data whether surrogates are accurate predicting patient's wishes.Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, congestive heart failure, chronic liver disease admitted to the San Juan Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Puerto Rico from November 1997 to February 1998 were evaluated. A questionnaire presented three hypothetical situations on withholding and withdrawal of life-support and CPR. The percent agreement was used as a measure of concordance between choices made by physician, surrogate and patients.Twenty patients met inclusion criteria (5 chronic liver disease, 9 heart failure, 6 AIDS). Relatives had a higher percent of agreement as compared to physicians in all vignettes. Even though, none did better than chance in predicting patient's wishes (k0.4). There was a tendency for relatives not to provide a wanted life-support measure, and for physicians to provide an unwanted life-support measure.The poor agreement between patients and surrogates suggests that substituted judgement is not an accurate tool to make end-of-life decisions. These findings, although similar to previous published studies, are unique because the direction of discrepant responses is opposite to the findings of studies published elsewhere. These results could reflect religious, cultural and socioeconomic differences.

A survey about tuberculosis infection status, surveillance and protection practices among pulmonologists and infectologists was performed.A fourteen-item questionnaire was mailed. The survey was addressed to 108 pulmonologists and 61 infectologists. Responses were collected from 35 pulmonologists (32%) and 18 infectologists (29%). Sixteen out 35 pulmonologists had a positive tuberculin test (TST) (46%). Nine of fourteen took at least 6 months of preventive therapy with isoniazid when converted. Three out of eighteen infectologists had a positive TST. 63% of the pulmonologists and 38% of the infectologists evaluate their TST every 12 months. 40% of the pulmonologists and 66% of the infectologists answered that they treat more than ten patients with tuberculosis annually. Interestingly, 50% of the responder bronchoscopists use surgical masks instead of recommended HEPA filter masks. 73% of the responders reported not having negative pressure rooms when performing procedures. Despite stamped-addressed envelopes and the relation of these professionals with the related issue, low participation was observed.Among the responders a low frequency of TST was observed, especially in those exposed to higher-risk procedures. Non-adequate facilities and lack of use of protective equipment was reported. Even though not representative of the entire medical community the results of this survey are concerning regarding educational and safety policies of our professionals and institutions.

Chylothorax is a rare cause of pleural effusion in association with cardiovascular surgery. A 68-year-old man had a coronary artery bypass graft; 10 days after surgery, he had progressive shortness of breath and a massive left pleural effusion. After chylothorax was diagnosed, it was successfully treated with a thoracostomy tube and total parenteral nutrition. The patient had an uneventful recovery. Nutrition is the most important issue in the treatment of chylothorax. Once chylothorax is identified, nutritional support is the priority, since it will have an important role in the recovery of the patient. Besides our case, we hereby present a short review of the literature regarding the diagnosis and management of this rare entity.

The specific type of capsular polysaccharide of an autochthonous strain of Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans was obtained by using the method of selective precipitation with hexadimethrine bromide. The capsular polysaccharide was matched to lamb's erythrocytes and it was used as an immunogen in rabbits. Antibody titres of up to 1:32 were attained. Doble serial dilutions of the capsular polysaccharide were evaluated as positive control antigen by contraimmunoelectrophoresis, latex and ELISA techniques, showing biological activity.

To assess the medical knowledge about asthma among residents from the Accreditation Council on Graduate Education (ACGME) accredited Internal Medicine programs.Asthma prevalence and morbidity has increased significantly in the last 20 years. Recent morbidity data suggests that approximately 14 to 15 million Americans suffer from asthma and 5,000 of them die annually due to this illness. Previous studies have suggested that Puerto Ricans are disproportionally affected by asthma. In order to impact both morbidity and mortality relates to asthma, primary care givers should be knowledgeable about the disease.Based in the 1993 National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) guidelines, a questionnaire was developed to evaluate the knowledge of asthma in physicians in the Internal Medicine Residency Programs. It consisted of 27 questions covering the areas of diagnosis and treatment of asthma.The questionnaire was answered by 90% of the 138 residents active at the moment of the study. Fifty-one percent of the residents failed to obtain a score of 70% or greater. Score on asthma diagnosis was less than 70% and did not improve through year of training. Score obtained on asthma treatment improved through training year although no statistical difference was obtained.In view of these results it is imperative to reinforce the state of the art asthma education of physicians. Research initiatives must evaluate educational strategies to improve asthma education.
