1. The percolation phase transition and statistical multifragmentation in finite systems

Abstract

The cumulant ratios up to fourth order of the Z distributions of the largest fragment in spectator fragmentation following 107,124Sn+Sn and 124La+Sn collisions at 600 MeV/nucleon have been investigated. They are found to exhibit the signatures of a second-order phase transition established with cubic bond percolation and previously observed in the ALADIN experimental data for fragmentation of 197Au projectiles at similar energies. The deduced pseudocritical points are found to be only weakly dependent on the A/Z ratio of the fragmenting spectator source. The same holds for the corresponding chemical freeze-out temperatures of close to 6 MeV.The experimental cumulant distributions are quantitatively reproduced with the Statistical Multifragmentation Model and parameters used to describe the experimental fragment multiplicities, isotope distributions and their correlations with impact-parameter related observables in these reactions. The characteristic coincidence of the zero transition of the skewness with the minimum of the kurtosis excess appears to be a generic property of statistical models and is found to coincide with the maximum of the heat capacity in the canonical thermodynamic fragmentation model.

Abstract

Isotopic yield distributions of nuclei produced in peripheral collisions of $^{80}$Kr+$^{40,48}$Ca at 35 MeV/nucleon are studied. Experimental results obtained by the FAZIA Collaboration at the LNS facility in Catania are compared with calculations performed with the statistical multifragmentation model (SMM). The fragments with atomic number $Z=19-24$ observed at forward angles are successfully described with the ensemble method previously established for reactions at higher energy. Using the SMM results, the isotopic compositions of the projectile residues are reconstructed. The results indicate a significant isospin exchange between the projectile and target nuclei, not far from isospin equilibrium, during the initial phase of the reaction. The two groups of light fragments with $Z=1-4$, experimentally distinguished by their velocities relative to coincident heavy projectile fragments, are found to originate from different sources. The isotopic composition of the slower group is consistent with emission from a low-density neck, enriched in neutrons, and satisfactorily reproduced with SMM calculations for a corresponding neck source of small mass., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

Hypernuclear production cross sections have been deduced for the first time with induced reaction of heavy ion beam on fixed target and by means of the invariant mass method by the HypHI Collaboration exploiting the reaction of 6Li + 12C at 2A GeV or sNN=2.70 GeV. A production cross section of 3.9±1.4 μb for 3ΛH and of 3.1±1.0 μb for 4ΛH respectively in the projectile rapidity region was inferred as well as the total production cross section of the Λ hyperon was measured and found to be equal to 1.7±0.8 mb. A global fit based on a Bayesian approach was performed in order to include and propagate statistical and systematic uncertainties. Production ratios of 3ΛH/4ΛH, 3ΛH/Λ and 4ΛH/Λ were included in the inference procedure. The strangeness population factors S3 and S4 of 3ΛH and 4ΛH respectively were extracted. In addition, the multiplicities of the Λ hyperon, 3ΛH, and 4ΛH together with the rapidity and transversal momentum density distributions of the observed hypernuclei were extracted and reported.

Abstract

Background: Projectile fragmentation is a well-established technique to produce rare isotope beams, but its underlying physical processes are not fully known.Purpose: We devote ourselves to studying the dynamical properties and secondary decay effects of projectile fragmentations in $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}, ^{107}\mathrm{Sn}+^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$ collisions at 600 MeV/nucleon.Method: The formation of the projectile spectator and the fragmentation process are studied with the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model. The minimum spanning tree algorithm and the ratio of parallel to transverse quantities are applied to distinguish the equilibrated projectile spectator during the dynamics evolution. The influence of secondary decay on fragmentation observables is investigated by comparing the calculations with and without the statistical code gemini. The validity of the theoretical approach is tested by comparing the calculated product yields with the experimental results of the ALADIN Collaboration for the studied reactions.Results: The general correlation of an increasing excitation energy with a decreasing mass of the spectator system is found for collisions with impact parameter of $b=5$--10 fm. The nucleon evaporation of the prefragments reduces the multiplicity of intermediate-mass fragments, but does not change their dependence on the isospin of the projectile. The sequential decay also leads to narrower isotope distributions. Switching to gemini at a higher excitation energy results in slightly narrower isotope distributions. With the gemini code, in which the nuclear masses with shell and pairing corrections are adopted, the calculations can rather generally reproduce the data of the isotope distributions and mean neutron-to-proton ratios of the light fragments.Conclusion: By permitting only evaporation in gemini, the IQMD+gemini model is able to reproduce the main features of projectile fragmentation in the studied Sn+Sn reactions.

Abstract

Heavy-ion-collision measurements in combination with transport model simulations serve as important tools for extracting the nuclear incompressibility. However, uncertainties in transport models (or model dependence) partly affect the reliability of the extracted result. In the present work, by using the recently measured data of rapidity-dependent flows, we constrain the incompressibility of nuclear matter and analyse the impact of model uncertainties on the obtained value. The method is based on the newly updated version of the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model in which the Skyrme potential energy-density functional is introduced. Three different Skyrme interactions which give different incompressibilities varying from $K_0$=201 to 271 MeV are adopted. The incompressibility is deduced from the comparison of the UrQMD model simulations and the FOPI data for rapidity-dependent elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at beam energies 0.4\emph{A} - 1.0\emph{A} GeV. The elliptic flow $v_2$ as a function of rapidity $y_0$ can be well described by a quadratic fit $v_2=v_{20} + v_{22}\cdot y_0^2 $. It is found that the quantity $v_{2n}$ defined by $v_{2n}=|v_{20}|+|v_{22}|$ is quite sensitive to the incompressibility $K_0$ and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, but not sensitive to the slope parameter $L$ of the nuclear symmetry energy. With the FU3FP4 parametrization of the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section, an averaged $K_0 = 220 \pm 40$~MeV is extracted from the $v_{2n}$ of free protons and deuterons. However, remaining systematic uncertainties, partly related to the choice of in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, are of the same magnitude ($\pm 40$~MeV). Abstract

New constraints for the nuclear equation of state at suprasaturation densities have been obtained by measuring collective particle flows in heavy-ion reactions at relativistic energies. Ratios and differences of neutron and hydrogen flows in 197Au + 197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon were used in studies of the asymmetric-matter equation of state. The comparison with predictions of transport models favors a moderately soft to linear density dependence, consistent with ab-initio nuclear matter theories. Model predictions suggest that comprehensive data sets collected at higher bombarding energies will provide information on the asymmetric-matter equation of state in the density range up to two or three times the saturation value.

Abstract

Distributions of the largest fragment charge are studied using the ALADIN data on fragmentation of $^{197}$Au projectiles at relativistic energies. The statistical measures skewness and kurtosis of higher-order fluctuations provide a robust indication of the transition point, linked to a phase transition in the thermodynamic limit. Extensive comparisons with predictions of a bond percolation model corroborate the high accuracy of this model in reproducing the distributions as well as the whole fragmentation pattern as represented by the measured charge correlations. In analogy to percolation, the pseudocritical and critical points are identified in the fragmentation data. Abstract

We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. Abstract

WOS: 000322848900009, A novel experiment, aiming at demonstrating the feasibility of hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams, was conducted. Using the invariant mass method, the spectroscopy of hypernuclear products of Li-6 projectiles on a carbon target at 2 A GeV was performed. Signals of the Lambda-hyperon and H-3(Lambda) and H-4(Lambda) hypernuclei were observed for final states of p + pi(-), He-3 + pi(-) and He-4 + pi(-), respectively, with significance values of 6.7, 4.7 and 4.9 sigma. By analyzing the proper decay time from secondary vertex distribution with the unbinned maximum likelihood fitting method, their lifetime values were deduced to be 262(-43)(+56) +/- 45 ps for Lambda, 183(-32)(+42) +/- 37 ps for H-3(Lambda), and 140(-33)(+48) +/- 35 ps for H-4(Lambda). Abstract

International audience; In the ASY-EOS experiment flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for (197)Au+(197)Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon, in order to investigate the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. By comparing the experimental data with the UrQMD transport model predictions, we have extracted a new constraint in agreement with the moderately soft to linear density dependence obtained in the former analysis on FOPI-LAND data, but reducing the associated uncertainty by a factor ∼ 2.

Abstract

Directed and elliptic flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for the reaction 197Au+197Au at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy within the ASY-EOS experimental campaign at the GSI laboratory. The detection system consisted of the Large Area Neutron Detector LAND, combined with parts of the CHIMERA multidetector, of the ALADIN Time-of-flight Wall, and of the Washington-University Microball detector. The latter three arrays were used for the event characterization and reaction-plane reconstruction. In addition, an array of triple telescopes, KRATTA, was used for complementary measurements of the isotopic composition and flows of light charged particles. From the comparison of the elliptic flow ratio of neutrons with respect to charged particles with UrQMD predictions, a value \gamma = 0.72 \pm 0.19 is obtained for the power-law coefficient describing the density dependence of the potential part in the parametrization of the symmetry energy. It represents a new and more stringent constraint for the regime of supra-saturation density and confirms, with a considerably smaller uncertainty, the moderately soft to linear density dependence deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data. International audience; The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI laboratory measured the direct and elliptic flow of neutrons and light charged particles in the reaction 197Au+197 Au at 400 A MeV incident energy. The ratio of elliptic flow of neutrons with respect to that of the light charged particles was used as main experimental observable to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy term of the nuclear equation of state. Results, obtained by comparison of the experimental data with the UrQMD model predictions, strongly support a moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy at suprasaturation densities below 2ρ0.

Abstract

The influence of the density-dependent symmetry energy on the balance energy (Ebal) of directed flow from heavy ion collisions (HICs) at incident energies covered by INDRA and MSU experiments is studied, using the updated version of the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, especially adapted to low-energy heavy ion collisions (HICs). Four mass-symmetric reactions with total mass numbers between 192 and 394 are chosen for investigating the influence of the symmetry energy on the system-mass dependence of Ebal. The results show that the uncertainty in the density dependence of the symmetry potential causes changes of Ebal of the order of several MeV, depending on the type of particle considered. The Ebal of neutrons from HICs is particularly sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry potential energy, while the system-mass dependence of Ebal of Z = 1 particles is not.

10th International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics -- SEP 14-18, 2009 -- Tokai, JAPAN, WOS: 000276770500016, The HypHI Phase 0 experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of heavy ion beams was performed at GSI in August and October in 2009, with a projectile of Li-6 at 2 A GeV impinged on carbon graphite target with a thickness of 8 g/cm(2). The experiment mainly aims to reconstruct events of H-3(Lambda), H-4(Lambda) and He-5(Lambda) by observing the pi(-) decay channel. Abstract

The complementary aspects of the strength of the symmetry energy at nuclear densities below and above saturation are illustrated with recent results from experiments performed at the GSI laboratory with relativistic heavy-ion beams. A systematic study of isotopic effects in spectator fragmentation was performed at the ALADIN spectrometer with 124 Sn primary and 107 Sn and 124 La secondary beams of 600 MeV/nucleon incident energy. The analysis within the Statistical Fragmentation Model reveals that the symmetry-term coefficient entering the liquid-drop description of the emerging fragments decreases significantly as the disintegration of the spectator system into fragments and light particles increases. Higher densities were probed in more central collisions of 197 Au + 197 Au nuclei at 400 MeV/nucleon. The results obtained from the analysis of the FOPI/LAND experimental data on neutron and hydrogen squeeze-out in comparison with UrQMD model predictions favor a moderately soft symmetry term with a density dependence of the potential term proportional to ( ρ / ρ 0 ) γ with γ = 0.9 ± 0.3 .

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy-ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. The results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model simulations favoured a moderately soft symmetry term, but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. These results have been confirmed by an independent analysis based on the Tübingen QMD simulations. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration. The present status of the data analysis is reported

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for ^197Au+^197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Reifarth et al: ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 3.0 ; Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., This project was supported by the HGF Young Investigators Project VH-NG-327, EMMI, H4F, HGS-HIRe, JINA, NAVI, DFG and ATHENA.

Abstract

The nuclear equation-of-state is a topic of highest current interest in nuclear structure and reactions as well as in astrophysics. In particular, the equation-of-state of asymmetric matter and the symmetry energy representing the difference between the energy densities of neutron matter and of symmetric nuclear matter are not sufficiently well constrained at present. The density dependence of the symmetry energy is conventionally expressed in the form of the slope parameter L describing the derivative with respect to density of the symmetry energy at saturation. Results deduced from nuclear structure and heavy-ion reaction data are distributed around a mean value L=60 MeV. Recent studies have more thoroughly investigated the density range that a particular observable is predominantly sensitive to. Two thirds of the saturation density is a value typical for the information contained in nuclear-structure data. Higher values exceeding saturation have been shown to be probed with meson production and collective flows at incident energies in the range of up to about 1 GeV/nucleon. From the measurement of the elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to light charged particles in recent experiments at the GSI laboratory, a new more stringent constraint for the symmetry energy at suprasaturation density has been deduced. It confirms, with a considerably smaller uncertainty, the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy previously deduced from the FOPI-LAND data. A systematic study of isotopic effects in the break-up of projectile spectators at relativistic energies has been performed with the ALADiN spectrometer at the GSI laboratory. Searching for signals of criticality in the fragment production we have applied the model independent universal fluctuations theory already proposed to track criticality signals in multifragmentation to our data. Abstract

We analyze the production cross sections and isotopic distributions of projectilelike residues in the reactions $^{112}\mathrm{Sn}+^{112}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}+^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$ at an incident beam energy of 1 GeV/nucleon measured with the fragment separator at the GSI laboratory. Calculations within the statistical multifragmentation model for an ensemble of excited sources were performed with ensemble parameters determined previously for similar reactions at 600 MeV/nucleon. The obtained good agreement with the experiment establishes the universal properties of the excited spectator systems produced during the dynamical stage of the reaction. It is furthermore confirmed that a significant reduction of the symmetry-energy term at the freeze-out stage of reduced density and high temperature is necessary to reproduce the experimental isotope distributions. A trend of decreasing symmetry energy for large neutron-rich fragments of low excitation energy is interpreted as a nuclear-structure effect.

Abstract

A new type of spallation experiments has been carried out at GSI, Darmstadt (Germany) in order to understand the spallation mechanism in greater details. These experiments use the inverse-kinematics technique where the ion beam is directed onto a liquid Hydrogen target, allowing the detection of heavy spallation residues in coincidence with low center-of-mass energy light particles. The setup is based on A Large Acceptance DIpole magNet (ALADIN) coupled with a multitrack Time Projection Chamber (TPC), a hodoscope and a neutron detector. First, data on 56 Fe + p at 1 A GeV were taken in February 2004. In the on-going analysis, isotopic cross-sections have been determined and compared to data taken at the FRagment Separator in GSI. Mean values and width of residue velocity distributions have also been obtained as well as Helium production cross-section. First, coincidence data are being analyzed.

Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich Heavy-Ion at intermediate energies has been recently proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear equation of state (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011. © Owned by the authors, 2012.

Abstract

Time-of-flight measurements in multifragmentation of heavy, relativistic projectiles require very good time resolution and at the same time the detecting system must cope with a dynamic range of up to 8000:1. We look into the possibility of application of large-area avalanche photodiodes (LAAPDs) as alternative light sensors to meet the above requirements. The paper presents the results of our amplitude and time response studies of a plastic scintillator BC-408 readout with a φ16 mm LAAPD using radioactive sources. The measurements were performed using two different setups. The best time resolution has been obtained by exploiting LAAPD cooling to increase its gain beyond that accessible at room temperature. We reach 610 ps (FWHM) at −26°C for the corresponding LAAPD gain of ≈900 and the 90 Sr / 90 Y β -ray source. We hope to reach below the desired 400 ps with the latter setup at the higher light levels available with multifragmentation products.

Abstract

The nucleus-nucleus Lie`ge intranuclear-cascade+percolation+evaporation model has been applied to the 12 C+ 197 Au data measured by the INDRA-ALADIN collaboration at GSI. After the intranuclear cascade stage, the data are better reproduced when using the Statistical Multiframentation Model as afterburner. Further checks of the model are done on data from the EOS and KAOS collaborations.

Abstract

An efficient method of energy scale calibration for the CsI(Tl) modules of the INDRA multidetector (rings 6–12) using elastic and inelastic 12C+1H scattering at E(12C)=30MeV per nucleon is presented. Background-free spectra for the binary channels are generated by requiring the coincident detection of the light and heavy ejectiles. The gain parameter of the calibration curve is obtained by fitting the proton total charge spectra to the spectra predicted with Monte-Carlo simulations using tabulated cross section data. The method has been applied in multifragmentation experiments with INDRA at GSI.

Abstract

International audience; The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or lightcomplex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energieshas been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of thesymmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturationdensities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows ofneutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au,96Zr+96Zr and 96Ru+96Ru collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon with theLarge Area Neutron Detector LAND as part of a setup with severaladditional detection systems used for the event characterization. Flowresults obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictionsof the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to lineardensity dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlierFOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

Within the newly updated version of the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, the transverse-velocity dependence of the elliptic flow of free nucleons from $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at the incident energy 400 MeV$/$nucleon is studied within different windows of the normalized c.m. rapidity $y_0$. It is found that the elliptic flow difference $v_{2}^{n}$-$v_{2}^{p}$ and ratio $v_{2}^{n}$/$v_{2}^{p}$ of neutrons versus protons are sensitive to the density dependence of the symmetry energy, especially the ratio $v_{2}^{n}$/$v_{2}^{p}$ at small transverse velocity in the intermediate rapidity intervals $0.4, Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys. Abstract

Multifragmentation properties measured with INDRA are studied for single sources produced in Xe+Sn reactions in the incident energy range 32-50 A MeV and quasiprojectiles from Au+Au collisions at 80 A MeV. A comparison for both types of sources is presented concerning Fisher scaling, Zipf law, fragment size and fluctuation observables. A Fisher scaling is observed for all the data. The pseudo-critical energies extracted from the Fisher scaling are consistent between Xe+Sn central collisions and Au quasi-projectiles. In the latter case it also corresponds to the energy region at which fluctuations are maximal. Abstract

Isotopic effects in spectator fragmentations following heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies are investigated using data from recent exclusive experiments with SIS beams at GSI. Reactions of 12C on 112,124Sn at incident energies 300 and 600 MeV per nucleon were studied with the INDRA multidetector while the fragmentation of stable 124Sn and radioactive 107Sn and 124La projectiles was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer. The global characteristics of the reactions are very similar. This includes the rise and fall of fragment production and deduced observables as, e.g., the breakup temperature obtained from double ratios of isotope yields. The mass distributions depend strongly on the neutron-to-proton ratio of the decaying system, as expected for a simultaneous statistical breakup. The ratios of light-isotope yields from neutron-rich and neutron-poor systems follow the law of isoscaling. The deduced scaling parameters decrease strongly with increasing centrality to values smaller than 50% of those obtained for the peripheral event groups. This is not compensated by an equivalent rise of the breakup temperatures which suggests a reduction of the symmetry term required in a liquid-drop description of the fragments at freeze-out., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, invited talk at IX International Conference on Nucleus Nucleus Collisions, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil August 28 - September 1, 2006

Abstract

Temperature-excitation energy correlation measurements on several systems at different incident energies are discussed in the framework of the investigation on possible liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. Results are compared to the presently available experimental caloric curves. Moreover theisotope and theexcited states temperatures, extracted from double ratios of isotope yields and population ratios of fragment unbound states, respectively, are compared. p ]The differences on the temperatures deduced from the two methods cannot be accounted for by the sequential feeding corrections. Instead, they seem to be related to the space-time evolution of the fragmentation process.

Abstract

Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been used to extract reaction plane dispersion free triple-differential cross sections for d, t, and alpha particles for the midcentral collisions of Kr-84+Au-197 at E/A = 35, 55, and 70 MeV. Both experimental measurements and extrapolations from lower incident energies suggest that rotational flow disappears at E/A approximate to 100 MeV for light charged particles and that reaction plane dispersions introduce large uncertainties in extracting the disappearance of rotational flow.

Abstract

Spectator decay was studied for the system Au + Au at an energy of 1000 A·MeV and the decay of the interaction region at energies between 50 and 200 A·MeV. In both cases temperatures were derived from several double-ratios of neighboring isotopes and from the population of excited states in 5 Li and 4 He. Agreement was found among the different isotope temperatures and also among the two excited state temperatures. The comparison of isotope and excited state temperatures, however, reveals large differences, which cannot be explained by feeding corrections. At incident energies between 600 and 1000 A·MeV the energy spectra of fragments and also neutrons of the decaying projectile spectator were measured. Whereas the slope parameters of the energy spectra and mean energies for fragments with Z ≥ 2 are independent of the incident energy, a strong dependence is found for the lightest particles, so that preequilibrium contributions to the spectator decay should be taken into account.

Abstract

Breakup temperatures were deduced from double ratios of isotope yields for target spectators produced in the reaction Au + Au at 1000 MeV per nucleon. Pairs of $^{3,4}$He and $^{6,7}$Li isotopes and pairs of $^{3,4}$He and H isotopes (p, d and d, t) yield consistent temperatures after feeding corrections, based on the quantum statistical model, are applied. The temperatures rise with decreasing impact parameter from 4 MeV for peripheral to about 10 MeV for the most central collisions. The good agreement with the breakup temperatures measured previously for projectile spectators at an incident energy of 600 MeV per nucleon confirms the observed universality of the spectator decay at relativistic bombarding energies. The measured temperatures also agree with the breakup temperatures predicted by the statistical multifragmentation model. For these calculations a relation between the initial excitation energy and mass was derived which gives good simultaneous agreement for the fragment charge correlations. The energy spectra of light charged particles, measured at $\theta_{lab}$ = 150$^{\circ}$, exhibit Maxwellian shapes with inverse slope parameters much higher than the breakup temperatures. The statistical multifragmentation model, because Coulomb repulsion and sequential decay processes are included, yields light-particle spectra with inverse slope parameters higher than the breakup temperatures but considerably below the measured values. The systematic behavior of the differences suggests that they are caused by light-charged-particle emission prior to the final breakup stage. PACS numbers: 25.70.Mn, 25.70.Pq, 25.75.-q

Abstract

Charge and transverse energy distributions for intermediate mass fragments have been extracted for central Kr1Au collisions at E/A5352400 MeV. The slopes of the measured fragment charge distributions decrease monotonically with incident energy, consistent with the expectations for highly charged systems, but not with recent critical exponent analyses. Statistical model calculations, which reproduce the experimental trends, suggest that post-breakup fragment secondary decays alter significantly the observed charge distributions. Abstract

The experimental data obtained from the reaction of ${}^{6}$Li projectiles at 2$A$ GeV on a fixed graphite target were analyzed to study the invariant mass distributions of $d+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $t+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. Indications of a signal in the $d+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $t+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ invariant mass distributions were observed with significances of 5.3 $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ and 5.0 $\ensuremath{\sigma}$, respectively, when including the production target, and 3.7 $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ and 5.2 $\ensuremath{\sigma}$, respectively, when excluding the target. The estimated mean values of the invariant mass for $d+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $t+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ signal were 2059.3 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 1.3 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 1.7 MeV/c${}^{2}$ and 2993.7 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 1.3 $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}$ 0.6 MeV/c${}^{2}$ respectively. The lifetime estimation of the possible bound states yielding to $d+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $t+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ final states were deduced to be as ${181}_{\ensuremath{-}24}^{+30}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}25$ ps and ${190}_{\ensuremath{-}35}^{+47}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}36$ ps, respectively. Those final states may be interpreted as the two-body and three-body decay modes of a neutral bound state of two neutrons and a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ hyperon, ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}3}n$.

Abstract

Flow observables in heavy-ion reactions at incident energies up to about 1 GeV per nucleon have been shown to be very useful for investigating the reaction dynamics and for determining the parameters of reaction models based on transport theory. In particular, the elliptic flow in collisions of neutron-rich heavy-ion systems emerges as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities. The comparison of ratios or differences of neutron and proton flows or neutron and hydrogen flows with predictions of transport models favors an approximately linear density dependence, consistent with ab-initio nuclear-matter theories. Extensive parameter searches have shown that the model dependence is comparable to the uncertainties of existing experimental data. Comprehensive new flow data of high accuracy, partly also through providing stronger constraints on model parameters, can thus be expected to improve our knowledge of the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter., 20 pages, 24 figures, review to appear in EPJA special volume on nuclear symmetry energy

Abstract

The determination of the equation of state of nuclear matter is one of the main objectives of relativistic heavy-ion physics. Insight into the equation of state has been gained through the study of collective phenomena, which can be attributed to the response of hot and dense nuclear matter from the hot and dense region formed by the overlap of projectile and target nuclei [1, 2]. In particular, directed sidewards flow is considered as an important signature of nuclear compression and thus is sensitive to the nuclear equation of state. The sidewards direction of the flow was described years ago on the basis of macroscopic thermaldynamic/hydrodynamical picture [3] and the more microscopic cascade model [4]. As two nuclei collide, the pressure and density increase in the interaction region. At a finite impact parameter there is an inherent asymmetry in the pressure, which results in a transverse flow of matter in the direction of lowest pressure. The amount of transverse flow is directly related to the stiffness of the nuclear equation of state and transport properties of the nuclear medium [5]. This flow reflects the interplay of collective and random motions. For a thermalized system, the random motions of emitted fragments are dictated by the thermal energy, which is independent of mass. Contributions to the fragment energy due to collective motion, on the other hand, increase linearly with mass, making the flow more easily observed for heavier fragments [6, 7].

Abstract

Cross sections for the charge pickup of {sup 238}U projectiles were measured at {ital E}/{ital A}=600 and 1000 MeV for seven different targets (Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au, and U). Events with two fission fragments with a sum charge of 93 in the exit channel were selected. Due to the significant excitation energy, the majority of the produced Np nuclei fission instead of decaying by evaporation to residues. The observed cross sections can be well reproduced by intranuclear-cascade-plus-evaporation calculations and, therefore, confirm recent results that no exotic processes are needed to explain charge-pickup processes. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
