The highest-impact medical literature is increasingly produced by interdisciplinary teams. The field of neurosurgery, which involves complex pathologies and recoveries, is particularly amenable to interdisciplinary research approaches. However, research in the medical context regarding the characteristics of effective teams, as well as how to develop and maintain interdisciplinary teams, remains lacking. Here, the authors used the business literature to identify the characteristics of effective teams. They then used the University of Michigan Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Program, founded under the leadership of the late Dr. Lynda Yang, as a case study for how these principles can be applied to build and operationalize a successful interdisciplinary team. They suggest that these same techniques can be used to create interdisciplinary research groups in other areas of neurosurgery.

Human evolution has been marked by a striking increase in total brain volume relative to body size. While a prominent and characteristic feature of this volumetric shift has been the disproportionate expansion of association cortex across our evolutionary lineage, descent with modification is apparent throughout all neural systems in both human and nonhuman primates. However, despite evidence for the ubiquitous and complex influence of evolutionary forces on brain biology, within the psychological sciences the vast majority of the literature on human brain evolution is entirely corticocentric. This selective focus has contributed to a flawed theoretical framework in which the evolution of association cortex is viewed as an isolated process, removed from the rest of the brain. Here, we review our current understanding of how evolutionary pressures have acted across anatomically and functionally coupled networks, highlighting the diverse set of rules and principles that govern human brain development. In doing so we challenge the systemic mischaracterization of human cognition and behavior as a competition that pits phylogenetically recent cortical territories against evolutionarily ancient subcortical and cerebellar systems. Rather, we propose a comprehensive view of human brain evolution with critical importance for the use of animal models, theory development, and network-focused approaches in the study of behavior across health and disease. This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark–gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detector system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirm the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, insights related to a potential second EIC detector are documented, which could serve as a guidepost for future development. Background Young people are most vulnerable to suicidal behaviours but least likely to seek help. A more elaborate study of the intrinsic and extrinsic correlates of suicidal ideation and behaviours particularly amid ongoing population-level stressors and the identification of less stigmatising markers in representative youth populations is essential. Methods Participants (n = 2540, aged 15–25) were consecutively recruited from an ongoing large-scale household-based epidemiological youth mental health study in Hong Kong between September 2019 and 2021. Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal ideation, plan, and attempt were assessed, alongside suicide-related rumination, hopelessness and neuroticism, personal and population-level stressors, family functioning, cognitive ability, lifetime non-suicidal self-harm, 12-month major depressive disorder (MDD), and alcohol use. Results The 12-month prevalence of suicidal ideation, ideation-only (no plan or attempt), plan, and attempt was 20.0, 15.4, 4.6, and 1.3%, respectively. Importantly, multivariable logistic regression findings revealed that suicide-related rumination was the only factor associated with all four suicidal outcomes (all p < 0.01). Among those with suicidal ideation (two-stage approach), intrinsic factors, including suicide-related rumination, poorer cognitive ability, and 12-month MDE, were specifically associated with suicide plan, while extrinsic factors, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) stressors, poorer family functioning, and personal life stressors, as well as non-suicidal self-harm, were specifically associated with suicide attempt. Conclusions Suicide-related rumination, population-level COVID-19 stressors, and poorer family functioning may be important less-stigmatising markers for youth suicidal risks. The respective roles played by not only intrinsic but also extrinsic factors in suicide plan and attempt using a two-stage approach should be considered in future preventative intervention work.

OBJECTIVE Standard, physician-elicited clinical assessment tools for the evaluation of function after nerve reconstruction for neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) do not accurately reflect real-world arm function. Wearable activity monitors allow for the evaluation of patient-initiated, spontaneous arm movement during activities of daily living. In this pilot study, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of using body-worn sensor technology to quantify spontaneous arm movement in children with NBPP 10 years after nerve reconstruction and report the timing and magnitude of recovered arm movement. METHODS Eight children with NBPP who underwent brachial plexus reconstruction approximately 10 years prior were recruited to take part in this single-institution prospective pilot study. Per the treatment protocol of the authors’ institution, operated patients had severe, nonrecovering nerve function at the time of surgery. The patients were fitted with an activity monitoring device on each of the affected and unaffected arms, which were worn for 7 consecutive days. The duration (VT) and power (VM) with which each arm moved during the patient’s normal daily activities were extracted from the accelerometry data and ratios comparing the affected and unaffected arms were calculated. Demographic data and standard physician-elicited clinical measures of upper-extremity function were also collected. RESULTS Three children underwent nerve grafting and transfer and 5 children underwent graft repair only. The mean (± SD) active range of motion was 98° ± 53° for shoulder abduction, 130° ± 24° for elbow flexion, and 39° ± 34° for shoulder external rotation. The median Medical Research Council grade was at least 2.5 for all muscle groups. The median Mallet grade was at least 2 for all categories, and 13.5 total. The VT ratio was 0.82 ± 0.08 and the VM ratio was 0.53 ± 0.12. CONCLUSIONS Wearable activity monitors such as accelerometers can be used to quantify spontaneous arm movement in children who underwent nerve reconstruction for NBPP at long-term follow-up. These data more accurately reflect complex, goal-oriented movement needed to perform activities of daily living. Notably, despite severe, nonrecovering nerve function early in life, postsurgical NBPP patients use their affected arms more than 80% of the time that they use their unaffected arms, paralleling results in patients with NBPP who recovered spontaneously. These data represent the first long-term, real-world evidence to support brachial plexus reconstruction for patients with NBPP.

Anatomic representation suggests that a median sensory nerve conduction study recording the thumb (median D1 NCS) may effectively assess upper neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP). We sought to determine the feasibility of technique, establish reference data, and assess its ability to: (a) identify focal upper plexus lesions; and (b) identify C6 root avulsion. In a secondary analysis, we explored the association between absence/presence of motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) during needle electromyography (EMG) of the deltoid and biceps brachii muscles and C6 avulsion status.A retrospective chart review was performed of surgical patients with severe upper NBPP who ultimately underwent surgical reconstruction (between 2017 and 2020). Median D1 sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude ranges were determined in affected and contralateral limbs and analyzed by C6 root avulsion status. Also, presence/absence of MUAPs during EMG of the deltoid and biceps brachii was compared between C6 avulsion patients and controls.Thirty-eight patients were included in our analysis. A median D1 NCS study was readily performed, showing a contralateral limb mean amplitude of 27.42 μV (range, 3.8-54.7 μV). Most patients had a low ipsilateral median D1 SNAP amplitude, regardless of C6 avulsion status. Detectable MUAPs in either deltoid or biceps brachii on EMG were atypical in C6 root avulsion.The median D1 NCS identifies upper NBPP, but does not distinguish C6 avulsions from post-ganglionic lesions, likely due to the frequent co-occurrence of post-ganglionic axonal disruption. The presence of MUAPs on deltoid/biceps brachii EMG suggests C6 avulsion is unlikely.

How striatal dopamine synthesis capacity (DSC) contributes to the pathogenesis of negative symptoms in first-episode schizophrenia (SZ) and delusional disorder (DD) has seldom been explored. As negative symptoms during active psychotic episodes can be complicated by secondary influences, such as positive symptoms, longitudinal investigations may help to clarify the relationship between striatal DSC and negative symptoms and differentiate between primary and secondary negative symptoms.A longitudinal study was conducted to examine whether baseline striatal DSC would be related to negative symptoms at 3 months in first-episode SZ and DD patients.Twenty-three first-episode age- and gender-matched patients (11 DD and 12 SZ) were consecutively recruited through an early intervention service for psychosis in Hong Kong. Among them, 19 (82.6%) patients (9 DD and 10 SZ) were followed up at 3 months. All patients received anBaseline striatal DSC (KThese findings highlight the role of striatal DSC in negative symptoms upon resolution of active psychotic episodes among first-episode SZ patients. Baseline striatal dopamine activity may inform future symptom expression with important treatment implications.

We performed feasibility studies for various single transverse spin measurements that are related to the Sivers effect, transversity and the tensor charge, and the Collins fragmentation function. The processes studied include semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) where single hadrons (pions and kaons) were detected in addition to the scattered DIS lepton. The data were obtained in {\sc pythia}6 and {\sc geant}4 simulated e+p collisions at 18 GeV on 275 GeV, 18 on 100, 10 on 100, and 5 on 41 that use the ECCE detector configuration. Typical DIS kinematics were selected, most notably $Q^2 > 1 $ GeV$^2$, and cover the $x$ range from $10^{-4}$ to $1$. The single spin asymmetries were extracted as a function of $x$ and $Q^2$, as well as the semi-inclusive variables $z$, and $P_T$. They are obtained in azimuthal moments in combinations of the azimuthal angles of the hadron transverse momentum and transverse spin of the nucleon relative to the lepton scattering plane. The initially unpolarized MonteCarlo was re-weighted in the true kinematic variables, hadron types and parton flavors based on global fits of fixed target SIDIS experiments and $e^+e^-$ annihilation data. The expected statistical precision of such measurements is extrapolated to 10 fb$^{-1}$ and potential systematic uncertainties are approximated given the deviations between true and reconstructed yields. The impact on the knowledge of the Sivers functions, transversity and tensor charges, and the Collins function has then been evaluated in the same phenomenological extractions as in the Yellow Report. The impact is found to be comparable to that obtained with the parameterized Yellow Report detector and shows that the ECCE detector configuration can fulfill the physics goals on these quantities., 22 pages, 22 figures, to be submitted to joint ECCE proposal NIM-A volume

Group decision-making is common in everyday life, whether a family is sharing a meal or a corporation is dividing profits. Research in economics on group decision-making has coalesced into a theory known as the tragedy of the commons, which states that resources are inevitably overused when shared by a group. However, even while multiple approaches to mitigating overuse of common resources have been put forward, notable counterexamples to the tragedy of the commons exist such that groups are ultimately able to avoid resource overuse. Development of a computerized paradigm amenable to behavioral modeling and simulation analyses could allow for exploration of whether resources will be overused in a given group of individuals and allow for the rapid testing of behavioral interventions designed to reduce instances of resource overuse. Using a newly developed group decision-making task, we studied how participants made decisions to utilize shared resources for the potential to receive a larger amount of money or conserve resources for a smaller amount of money. Using behavioral modeling, we found that valuation of resource overuse is most impacted only when an exceptionally small amount of resources are remaining. Using computational analyses, we were able to differentiate individual participants by both group earnings and self-reported social attitudes in ways that correlated with their willingness to utilize resources. These results signify the importance of individual differences in group composition regarding the tragedy of the commons, emphasizing the impact of the attitudes and behaviors of individual group members in predicting shared resource use.

Humans and nonhuman animals derive value from many different sources. Some of these sources, notably primary reinforcers like food, are clearly rewarding and can powerfully shape our behaviors. Other sources of reward, such as information, are more intangible and abstract. Like humans, nonhuman primates also find information inherently rewarding, displaying a preference to reveal information about upcoming primary reinforcers even though the information has no bearing on the outcome itself. For animals living in social groups, the need for information extends beyond primary reinforcers like food. They need to acquire information from others or about others. This is especially true for animals, such as nonhuman primates, which live in large and often hierarchically organized societies, where processing social information for the purpose of learning and socializing can be just as critical to survival. To quantify curiosity for knowing social information in monkeys, we extend the advanced informationseeking paradigm (Bromberg-Martin and Hikosaka, 2009) into the realm of abstract, social information. We first replicated the finding that monkeys prefer advanced information about juice size (Bromberg-Martin and Hikosaka, 2009). We next trained monkeys on a social variant of this task. In the advanced social information-seeking task, monkeys had the option to choose a cue that tells them in advance the valence, or facial expression, on a monkey’s face that they will be viewing before receiving the invariant amount of juice. Even though this cue did not impact which facial expression the monkeys would see, they preferred to know the valence of the facial expression in advance. Our results indicate that information-seeking behavior generalizes to seeking social information. Our findings also suggest that curiosity in nonhuman primates can be translated into increasingly abstract levels of information.

Humans have an exceptional ability to cooperate relative to many other species. We review the neural mechanisms supporting human cooperation, focusing on the prefrontal cortex. One key feature of human social life is the prevalence of cooperative norms that guide social behavior and prescribe punishment for noncompliance. Taking a comparative approach, we consider shared and unique aspects of cooperative behaviors in humans relative to nonhuman primates, as well as divergences in brain structure that might support uniquely human aspects of cooperation. We highlight a medial prefrontal network common to nonhuman primates and humans supporting a foundational process in cooperative decision-making: valuing outcomes for oneself and others. This medial prefrontal network interacts with lateral prefrontal areas that are thought to represent cooperative norms and modulate value representations to guide behavior appropriate to the local social context. Finally, we propose that more recently evolved anterior regions of prefrontal cortex play a role in arbitrating between cooperative norms across social contexts, and suggest how future research might fruitfully examine the neural basis of norm arbitration.

J-PARC E16 is an experiment to examine the origin of hadron mass through a systematic measurement of spectral changes of vector mesons in nuclei. The measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs from the decay of vector mesons will provide the information of the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry in a normal nuclear density. To resolve a pulse pile-up and achieve good discrimination of $e^{+}$ and $e^{-}$ from the background of a reaction rate of an order of 10 MHz, the data acquisition (DAQ) system uses waveform sampling chips of APV25 and DRS4. The trigger rate and data rate are expected to be 1 kHz and 120–330 MiB/s, respectively. The DAQ system for readout of APV25 and DRS4 were developed, where events were synchronized by common trigger and tag data. The first commissioning in beam, called Run-0a, was performed in June 2020 with about 1/4 of the designed setup. The DAQ worked with a trigger rate of 300 Hz in the Run-0a and the main bottleneck was a large data size of APV25. Further optimization of the DAQ system will improve the performance.

The influence of neuromodulators on brain activity and behaviour is undeniably profound, yet our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms, or ability to reliably reproduce effects across varying conditions, is still lacking. Oxytocin, a hormone that acts as a neuromodulator in the brain, is an example of this quandary; it powerfully shapes behaviours across nearly all mammalian species, yet when manipulated exogenously can produce unreliable or sometimes unexpected behavioural results across varying contexts. While current research is rapidly expanding our understanding of oxytocin, interactions between oxytocin and other neuromodulatory systems remain underappreciated in the current literature. This review highlights interactions between oxytocin and the opioid system that serve to influence social behaviour and proposes a parallel-mechanism hypothesis to explain the supralinear effects of combinatorial neuropharmacological approaches. We measure technical efficiency of Peruvian and Chilean port terminals, to evaluate the influence of certain contextual variables in the terminals’ efficiency levels. The sample includes 14 port terminals from 2004 to 2014. Due to the potential differences, we have estimated a DEA model in a non-convex metafrontier framework. Afterwards, we estimated all the regression models proposed in the literature that could be used to explain not only the technical efficiency estimated with respect to the metafrontier (TE*) but also each one of its components: the technical efficiency with respect to the group-specific frontier (TEk) and the technological gap ratio (TGR). Results are robust across models.

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a cutting-edge accelerator facility that will study the nature of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of the visible matter in the universe. The proposed experiment will be realized at Brookhaven National Laboratory in approximately 10 years from now, with detector design and R&D currently ongoing. Notably, EIC is one of the first large-scale facilities to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) already starting from the design and R&D phases. The EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) is a consortium that proposed a detector design based on a 1.5T solenoid. The EIC detector proposal review concluded that the ECCE design will serve as the reference design for an EIC detector. Herein we describe a comprehensive optimization of the ECCE tracker using AI. The work required a complex parametrization of the simulated detector system. Our approach dealt with an optimization problem in a multidimensional design space driven by multiple objectives that encode the detector performance, while satisfying several mechanical constraints. We describe our strategy and show results obtained for the ECCE tracking system. The AI-assisted design is agnostic to the simulation framework and can be extended to other sub-detectors or to a system of sub-detectors to further optimize the performance of the EIC detector., 16 pages, 18 figures, 2 appendices, 3 tables

There are a significant number of software and computing challenges that need to be overcome at the EIC. During the EIC detector proposal development period, the ECCE consortium began identifying and addressing these challenges in the process of producing a complete detector proposal based upon detailed detector and physics simulations. In this document, the software and computing efforts to produce this proposal are discussed; furthermore, the computing and software model and resources required for the future of ECCE are described. Aims Riemerella anatipestifer infections of goslings and ducklings can result in high mortality. Since there are at least 21 serotypes of R. anatipestifer, cross-protection is an important goal for vaccine development. Methods and results In this study, we evaluated the immunostimulatory effect of different immunization regimens - the traditional inactivated vaccine vs prime-boost regimens using DNA and protein subunit vaccines (DNA+subunit, subunit+subunit, subunit+inactivated and DNA+DNA). Results showed that, when compared to the inactivated vaccine, prime-boost regimens induced higher and up to 16-week longer lasting levels of antibody responses, significantly elevated the percentage of the cytotoxic CD8+ T cell and higher expression levels of IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-12 mRNAs. Furthermore, as an indication of cross-protection, sera from prime-boost regimens were able to recognize lysates of R. anatipestifer serotypes 1, 2 and 6. Conclusions Prime-boost regimens especially DNA-prime and protein-boost, induce strong long-term immune response and may prove protective for breeder ducks requiring long-term protection. Significance and impact of the study It is worth mentioning that the subunit+inactivated regimen group also elicited strong immune response. The cost of this regimen may only be half of the other prime-boost regimens, making this subunit + inactivated combination an attractive option.
