Climate activist Greta Thunberg started her Skolstrejk för Klimatet on 20 August 2018. Her activity inspired the weekly international demonstrations of Fridays for Future. In this paper I review the scientific argumentation that justifies the demonstrations.

I argue that the evidence of the Out-of-Africa hypothesis and the evidence of multiregional evolution of prehistorical humans can be understood if there has been interbreeding between Homo erectus, Homo neanderthalensis, and Homo sapiens at least during the preceding 700,000 years. These interbreedings require descendants who are capable of reproduction and therefore parents who belong to the same species. I suggest that a number of prehistorical humans who are at present regarded as belonging to different species belong in fact to one single species. &nbsp

The micro hot fusion scenario in order to explain the cold fusion neutron and heat emissions is presented.

Literary evidence supports the following view. Tartessos and Tarshish were identical. Tartessos was the model for Plato's Atlantis. The Tartessians traded with precious metals, especially with silver. Among their trade partners were the Phoenicians, the Hebrews, and the Greeks. The capital of Tartessos lay in the Donana National Park. Tartessos existed from the tenth to the sixth century BC.

Earth and Moon were formed 4.6 billion years ago by the collision of the two protoplanets Gaia and Theia. Afterwards the Earth formed a crust where colliding comets provided the water of the oceans. This Hadean Eon was terminated 3.9 billion years ago during the Late Heavy Bombardment when an eccentric orbit of Jupiter caused a bombardment of the Earth by asteroids. Soon thereafter, 3.8 billion years ago, there is geochemical evidence of terrestrial life which performed photosynthesis. The terrestrial life witnessed and survived several cataclysms including the snowball Earth 760 to 580 million years ago, an ice age 440 million years ago which was possibly caused by a gamma-ray burst, and an asteroid impact 65 million years ago which generated the Chicxulub crater and contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The 1908 Tunguska explosion was caused by a small stony asteroid. Amino acids, purines, pyrimidines and sugars, but no proteins, nucleotides or extraterrestrial unicellular organisms were detected in meteorites. This argues against the hypothesis of panspermia. The synthesis of amino acids, small peptides, purines and pyrimidine ribonucleotides under conditions of the primitive Earth (Stanley Miller experiments) and the polymerization of RNA nucleotides on clay minerals suggests that viroids and an RNA world could have existed during the Hadean Eon.

I suggest the following scenario. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius (14-37), that is late in 28 or early in 29, John began to preach a baptism. Jesus healed and preached and was crucified on the Preparation Day, Friday 3 April 33 during a lunar eclipse. Thereafter the apostles began to preach and raising the number of believers from 120 to 5000. This caused a persecution where Saul converted to Paul late in 33. Afterwards Paul spent three years in Damascus, where Aretas IV was king. Thereafter Paul did his first travel which lasted for fourteen years, that is 36-50. This was followed by the council of the apostles late in 50. Thereafter Paul did his second travel which lasted for at least a year and six months. Then he did his third travel which lasted for at least two years and six months, that is 52-54. Afterwards he was imprisoned for two years by Antonius Felix until Porcius Festus became procurator of Judaea in 56.

Geochemists disagree whether or not prebiotic chemistry has existed already during the Hadean Eon and whether the then terrestrial atmosphere has been strongly or weakly reduced. Here I argue that cellular life has existed already just after the end of the Hadean Eon and that terrestrial life has survived a number of cataclysms during the Earth's history. I argue that although organic molecules have been detected in meteorites that most organic molecules required for the formation of macromolecules must have been formed on Earth. Finally, I argue that the primitive terrestrial atmosphere during the Hadean Eon has been weakly reduced, so that amino acids and small nucleic acids could have been formed. I suggest that the first self-replicable macromolecules have been similar to viroids.

I argue that Plato's description of the geography of Atlantis refers to the Iron Age city of Tartessos and that Plato's description of the war of the Atlanteans refers to the war of the Bronze Age Sea Peoples.

I examine the groups which underly classical mechanics, non-relativistic quantum mechanics, special relativity, relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, quantum flavourdynamics, quantum chromodynamics, and general relativity. This examination includes the rotations SO(2) and SO(3), the Pauli algebra, the Lorentz transformations, the Dirac algebra, and the U(1), SU(2), and SU(3) gauge transformations. I argue that general relativity must be generalized to Einstein-Cartan theory, so that Dirac spinors can be described within the framework of gravitation theory.

The cold fusion neutron emissions, neutron bursts, and heat bursts can be explained by the extended micro hot fusion scenario. I describe the model and present the experimental evidence.

Adolf Schulten suggested that Tartessos-Tarshish was the model for Plato's Atlantis. I argued that its capital was situated in what is now the Marisma de Hinojos within the central part of the Andalucian Donana National Park in south-west Spain. This article reports about the preliminary results of an archaeological expedition to test this theory. The preliminary results of the expedition include evidence of either a tsunami or a storm flood during the third millenium BC and evidence of human settlements from the Neolithic Age to the Middle Ages.

Recently, we suggested a model of magnetic monopoles (hep-ph/9708394). Here we will propose a tabletop experiment to test this model. The verification of the predicted effect would have far-reaching consequences.

I review the experiments by Stanley Miller and Sidney Fox on the production of amino acids and unicellular forms under primitive terrestrial atmosphere conditions. I continue with a review of the evidence for and against unicellular organisms in the Orgueil meteorite and the ALH84001 martian meteorite. I conclude that the evidence argues against the panspermia hypothesis of Fred Hoyle and Nalin Chandra Wickramasinghe.

By the end of 2018, 42 years after the landing of the two Viking seismometers on Mars, InSight will deploy onto Mars’ surface the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Internal Structure) instrument; a six-axes seismometer equipped with both a long-period three-axes Very Broad Band (VBB) instrument and a three-axes short-period (SP) instrument. These six sensors will cover a broad range of the seismic bandwidth, from 0.01 Hz to 50 Hz, with possible extension to longer periods. Data will be transmitted in the form of three continuous VBB components at 2 sample per second (sps), an estimation of the short period energy content from the SP at 1 sps and a continuous compound VBB/SP vertical axis at 10 sps. The continuous streams will be augmented by requested event data with sample rates from 20 to 100 sps. SEIS will improve upon the existing resolution of Viking’s Mars seismic monitoring by a factor of ∼2500 at 1 Hz and ∼200000 at 0.1 Hz. An additional major improvement is that, contrary to Viking, the seismometers will be deployed via a robotic arm directly onto Mars’ surface and will be protected against temperature and wind by highly efficient thermal and wind shielding. Based on existing knowledge of Mars, it is reasonable to infer a moment magnitude detection threshold of Mw∼3 at 40∘ epicentral distance and a potential to detect several tens of quakes and about five impacts per year. In this paper, we first describe the science goals of the experiment and the rationale used to define its requirements. We then provide a detailed description of the hardware, from the sensors to the deployment system and associated performance, including transfer functions of the seismic sensors and temperature sensors. Excessive release of hemoglobin from red blood cells markedly disturbs the health status of patients due to cytotoxic effects of free hemoglobin and heme. The latter component is able to initiate novel hemolytic events in unperturbed red blood cells. We modeled this process by incubation of ferric protoporphyrin IX with freshly isolated red blood cells from healthy volunteers. The heme-induced hemolysis was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by the chlorite-based drug WF10, whereby the hemolysis degree was totally abolished at a molar ratio of 1:2 between chlorite and heme. Upon incubation of heme with WF10, the ultraviolet-visible spectrum changed, whereas the release of iron from heme and the appearance of fluorescent breakdown products of the porphyrin ring were negligible at this ratio, but increased with increasing excess of chlorite over heme. Thus, inhibition of hemolysis by WF10 takes already place at those chlorite concentrations, where no degradation of the porphyrin ring occurs. As WF10 is applied in form of an intravenous infusion to patients with severe inflammatory states, these data support the hypothesis that the beneficial WF10 effects are closely associated with inactivation of free heme.

I present a generalization of quantum electrodynamics which includes Diracmagnetic monop oles and the Salam magnetic photon. This quantum electromagnetodynamics has many attractive features. (1) It explains the quantization of electric charge. (2) It describes symmetrized Maxwell equations. (3) It is manifestly covariant. (4) It describes local four-potentials. (5) It avoids the unphysicalDirac string. (6) It predicts a second kind of electromagnetic radiation which can be veried by a tabletop experiment. An eect of this radiation may have been observed by August Kundt in 1885. Furthermore I discuss a generalization of General Relativity which includes Cartan's torsion. I discuss the mathematical denition, concrete description, and physical meaning of Cartan's torsion. I argue that the electric-magnetic duality of quantum electromagnetodynamics is analogous to the spin-mass duality of Einstein-Cartan theory. A quantum version of this theory requires that the torsion tensor corresponds to a spin-3 boson called tordion which is shown to have a rest mass close to the Planck mass. Moreover I present an empirically satised fundamental equation of unied eld theory which includes the fundamental constants of electromagnetism and gravity. I conclude with the remark that the concepts presented here require neither Grand Unication nor supersymmetry.

Summary Aims Limited data are available on determinants of diabetic neuropathy as its pathogenesis is multifactorial. Since homocysteine exhibits toxic effects on vascular endothelial cells, the association between homocysteine and the prevalence of neuropathy in Type 2 diabetes mellitus was investigated. Methods A total of 65 Type 2 diabetic patients were consecutively enrolled into the study. Neuropathy was diagnosed according to clinical symptoms, clinical examination, electrophysiological sensory testing and autonomic function testing. With regard to homocysteine-related parameters, plasma homocysteine, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and renal function (creatinine, ceratinine clearance, cystatin C) were measured, and the C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene was determined. Results Forty-three of the Type 2 diabetic patients were classified as suffering from neuropathy. Both patient groups were comparable with regard to demographic data, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, renal function and homocysteine-related vitamins. In contrast, homocysteine levels (P = 0.04) and the frequency of hyperhomocysteinemia (≥ 15 μmol/l) (P = 0.01) were significantly increased in neuropathic patients. In a logistic regression model with neuropathy as dependent variable, homocysteine (adjusted for creatinine, homocysteine-related vitamins, HbA1c and duration of diabetes) was the only significant variable associated with the prevalence of neuropathy (odds ratio for homocysteine per 5 μmol/l increase: 2.60 (95% confidence interval 1.07–6.33)). Conclusion The data indicate that homocysteine is independently associated with the prevalence of diabetic neuropathy in a collective of Type 2 diabetic patients. A larger, prospective study would be desirable to clarify the role of homocysteine in the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathy.

We performed a finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction coupled to Einstein phonons. Our method allows to treat easily up to 100 phonons per site and the results presented are practically free from truncation errors. We studied in detail the magnetic susceptibility, the specific heat, the phonon occupation, the dimerization, and the spin-correlation function for various spin-phonon couplings and phonon frequencies. In particular we give evidence for the transition from a gapless to a massive phase by studying the finite-size behavior of the susceptibility. The Framing Camera (FC) is the German contribution to the Dawn mission. The camera will map 4 Vesta and 1 Ceres through a clear filter and 7 band-pass filters covering the wavelengths from the visible to the near-IR. The camera will allow the determination of the physical parameters of the asteroids, the reconstruction of their global shape as well as local topography and surface geomorphology, and provide information on composition via surface reflectance characteristics. The camera will also serve for orbit navigation. The resolution of the Framing Camera will be up to 12 m per pixel in low altitude mapping orbit at Vesta (62 m per pixel at Ceres), at an angular resolution of 93.7 μrad px−1.

The effects of long-term treatment with the progesterone antagonists ZK 98.299 and ZK 112.993 on the uterus of intact mature rats were investigated with light and electron microscopy. After 3-4 weeks treatment with both progesterone antagonists, the uterine luminal epithelium showed ongoing mitotic activity, increased apoptosis and invasion by granulocytes. Many uteri showed metaplastic areas with stratified squamous epithelium. Basically, the same changes occurred, but to a lesser extent, in the glandular epithelium. At the ultrastructural level, the epithelial cells displayed the morphological features of a certain degree of differentiation. The dissociation of collagen fibres, infiltration by granulocytes and dilatation of small vessels were observed in the subepithelial connective tissue. The myometrium increased in thickness and electron microscopic examination revealed hypertrophic myocytes with a well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum. Most of the morphological reactions may be regarded as due to the direct inhibitory action of progesterone antagonists at the level of the different uterine tissues and the resulting unopposed action of estrogen. The metaplastic changes and the suppression of the anti-proliferative action of progesterone on uterine epithelial cells should be taken into account when treating women in their reproductive years with these drugs for long periods of time, as may be necessary for the endocrine treatment of mammary cancer and endometriosis.

In a series of experiments Jones. have detected neutron excesses having indicated some fusion processes within deuterated metals. However, most efforts to reproduce their experiments have failed. Possible sources of failure of later experiments are discussed in this paper.

The observational data of several experiments which might have confirmed electrochemical fusion are discussed.

A German family with 21 members affected by Alzheimer disease (AD) was studied clinically and genetically. The diagnosis was histologically verified in three affected family members. Ancestors were traced through seven generations to a couple residing in East-Westfalia during the middle of the 19th century. Dementia was often accompanied by extrapyramidal features and myoclonus. No cases of Down syndrome or hematologic malignancy occurred in this family. Clinical manifestations, temporal progression, neurological testing, and neuropathological features do not differ from the more common sporadic form of AD. The inheritance pattern is most consistent with autosomal-dominant transmission.

International audience; Good fiction imitates facts. Plato declared that his Atlantis tale is philosophical fiction invented to describe his fictitious ideal state in the case of war. I suggest that Plato used three historical elements for this tale. (i) Greek tradition on Mycenaean Athens for the description of ancient Athens, (ii) Egyptian records on the wars of the Sea Peoples for the description of the war of the Atlanteans, and (iii) oral tradition from Syracuse about Tartessos for the description of the city and geography of Atlantis.

This article starts with the mathematical definition, concrete description, and physical meaning of Cartan's torsion. I proceed with the argumentation that torsion is required for the description of intrinsic spin. Moreover I argue that the duality between curvature and torsion is analogous to the duality between electricity and magnetism. An extended micro hot fusion scenario attempts to explain the burst processes of cold fusion reports and unsuccessful experiments. A heuristic model requires only 10 m{sup 3} of palladium deuteride to release a power of 1 GW for a long time. This might facilitate future commercial use of cold fusion. 40 refs.

We investigate the antiadiabatic limit of an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons via a bond coupling. The flow equation method is used to decouple the spin and the phonon part of the Hamiltonian. In the effective spin model longer range spin-spin interactions are generated. The effective spin chain is frustrated. The resulting temperature dependent couplings are used to determine the magnetic susceptibility and to determine the phase transition from a gapless state to a dimerized gapped phase. A randomized, double-blind trial compared treatment with the immune modulator WF10 (ten patients) and placebo (nine patients) administered in cycles over 3 months among individuals with advanced AIDS. There were no notable clinical adverse events; changes in hematologic and chemistry values were comparable in the two groups. In both groups, median HIV-RNA PCR values remained stable. Immunologic variables showed a consistent tendency to increase in the WF10 group and to decrease in the control group, with significant differences between groups for median WBC, lymphocyte, CD19, and CD35 values. Ten infections occurred in the control group, four of which were Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), and three in the WF10 group none of which was PCP. Five patients in the control group were hospitalized during the trial for a total of 53 days; no patients in the WF10 group were hospitalized. Over a subsequent 9-months follow-up, six patients from the control group and one from the WF10 group died. These results indicate that WF10 administration appears safe, may enhance immunologic function, and unlike other macrophage-activating cytokines does not increase HIV expression in this patient population. Further studies of WF10 in larger patient populations are warranted.

The possibility of the existence of magnetic charges is one of the greatest unsolved issues of the physics of this century. The concept of magnetic monopoles has at least two attractive features: (i) Electric and magnetic fields can be described equivalently. (ii) In contrast to quantum electrodynamics models of monopoles are able to explain the quantization of electric charge. We suggest a quantum field theoretical model of the electromagnetic interaction that describes electricity and magnetism as equivalent as possible. This model requires the cross-section of Salam's ``magnetic photon'' to depend on the absolute motion of the electric charge with which it interacts. We suggest a tabletop experiment to verify this magnetic photon. Its discovery by the predicted effect would have far-reaching consequences: (i) Evidence for a new gauge boson and a new kind of radiation which may find applications in medicine. (ii) Evidence for symmetrized Maxwell equations. Objective: Since the chlorite—oxygen reaction product tetrachlorodecaoxygen (TCDO) anion complex promotes efficaciously tissue repair and has antibacterial activity, our aim was to determine the effects of TCDO on the replication of HIV and on the infectivity of free HIV particles. Design: The effects of TCDO on cellular HIV replication machinery and the consequences of TCDO for infectivity of HIV virions were evaluated. Methods: Virus yields in supernatants of TCDO-supplemented cultures of HIV-infected cells or virus infectivity in TCDO-treated virus stocks were quantified by titration assays and then calculating the 50% tissue culture infectious dose. Results: First, TCDO did not affect the replication of HIV in persistently infected lymphocytic and monocytic cell lines or in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Second, supplementation of HIV stocks with TCDO markedly decreased the infectivity of HIV particles in a concentration dependent manner. Third, the binding of gp120 envelope glycoprotein of HIV-1 to cells is blocked by pre-incubation with TCDO. Fourth, the inhibition of HIV replication by the reverse transcriptase inhibitor 3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine (zidovudine) in de novo infected cell cultures was not affected by the simultaneous addition of TCDO. However, the delayed virus spread of HIV in cultures in the presence of suboptimal concentrations of zidovudine could significantly be blocked by the simultaneous addition of TCDO. Fifth, TCDO failed to induce the chromosomally integrated HIV-1 provirus in the T-lymphoma cell line ACH2. Conclusions: TCDO appears to inactivate HIV particles directly, but has no influence on the intracellular replicative machinery of HIV. Our results suggest that a clinical evaluation of the TCDO complex as chemotherapy for HIV infection and full-blown AIDS should be considered, particularly in patients concomitantly receiving zidovudine.

An account is given in this paper of particular problems associated with early detection of mesotheliomatous alterations and differential diagnosis for their distinction from reactive mesothelial cell proliferations. Reference is made, in that context, to pathologico-anatomic experience obtained from postmortem and biopsy samples of human malignant mesotheliomas and animal experiments, following exposure to various asbestos-containing dusts. Diagnoses, such as "premesotheliomatous alteration" or "early mesothelioma", in other words, differentiation between benign and malignant, consequently, appear to be unjustified.

Differentiated thyroid carcinomas (follicular and papillary) were found to differ, for several biological behaviours, from carcinomas of other organs and even from anaplastic carcinomas of the thyroid. These peculiarities are quite often morphologically characterised by mature, organ-like histological appearances, long-time encapsulation from adjacent thyroid tissue, and delayed metastasation. Proper judgement of need for surgery and operability, consequently, can be quite difficult. Any tumour, therefore, should be individually assessed, and caution may be appropriate when it comes to therapeutic decision-making. These tumours are briefly typed in this paper by their histological patterns. The unique nature is mentioned of follicular and papillary carcinomas. Reference is made to factors of relevance to prognosis.

About a rare benign tumor of the lung of a fifty-nine years old woman is reported. The possible relation to the group of the pulmonary hamartomas is discussed. The tumor was benoted as "Benign angiohamartomatous tumor".

The first non-metallic oxygen carrier, tetrachlorodecaoxide (TCDO), showed in vitro antibacterial activity among aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. The lethal dose for Escherichia coli, for example, was 150 micrograms/ml whereas 15 micrograms/ml reduced the bacterial amount after a latent period of two hours, but regrowth started after four hours. The bactericidal effect of TCDO, however, was dose-dependent and species-specific. This suggests that some aerobic bacterial species might not be able to produce sufficient amounts of protecting enzymes like catalase or superoxide dismutase. The computer controlled measurement of chemiluminescence was used as a model for the phagocytic activity. With isolated human granulocytes and opsonized zymosan as antigen no increase in peak counts per minute was observed compared with controls without TCDO. However, with human whole blood, positive effects were seen using TCDO together with zymosan as well as specific and non-specific opsonized Klebsiella pneumoniae K 17. It seems that whole blood possesses additional, but as yet unknown biocatalysers to split TCDO into oxygen and chloride.

There is a correlation between tissue oxygen tension, incidence of infection and disturbance of wound healing. Scientific investigations in recent years have documented that infection and tissue repair are processes consuming oxygen. Animal experiments have shown that oxygenation of the tissue is essential for the elimination of pathogens, the stimulation of phagocytosis as well as for the degradation of dead tissue structures and the synthesis of new tissue structures. Hypoxia and hypovolemia are of crucial significance for the impairment of organ functions. An effective therapy for disorders of oxygenation has not been feasible so far, except for clinical anesthesiological efforts to increase the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However, it has recently been possible to synthesize an oxygen carrier which supports respiratory oxygen physiologically. With tetrachlorodecaoxide (TCDO), a causal therapeutic concept for the topical treatment of infected hypoxic wounds with chronic disturbance of wound healing has been introduced for the first time.

The aim of ultrasonic welding of bones is to attain a stable osteosynthesis between the ends of the fractures by application of a, under ultrasonic influence quickly polymerizing, plast monomer mixed with granular homologous bone particles. In this paper the healing process from the osteosynthesis attained by welding up to the organic healing of the fracture is investigated.

Oxidation of methionine, 4-(methylthio)-2-oxobutyric acid (KMB), or 1-aminocyclopropane carbonic acid (ACC) are indicator reactions for activated oxygen species such as singlet oxygen (1O2), OH·-radical like oxidants, superoxide anion (O2 ·-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or activated hemo-iron complexes like peroxidase-or catalase-“compound”. Methionine is oxidized by OH· as well as by 102 forming ethylene, but not by tetrachloro-decaoxygen complex (TCDO) in the absence or presence of catalytic hemoproteins such as peroxidase, hemoglobin or myoglobin. Both KMB and ACC are oxidized by TCDO under the catalysis of the above hemo-proteins where neither catalase nor superoxide dismutase are inhibitors. TCDO hemo-protein complex is an oxidant with similar properties as peroxidase-compound I and can clearly be differentiated from 02 ·-, H2O2, OH· and 1O2.
