Abstract: We present Experiment 864's measurement of invariant antideuteron yields in 11.5A GeV/c Au + Pt collisions. The analysis includes 250 million triggers representing 14 billion 10% central interactions sampled for events with high mass candidates. We find (1/2 pi pt) d^(2)N/dydpt = 3.5 +/- 1.5 (stat.) +0.9,-0.5 (sys.) x 10^(-8) GeV^(-2)c^(2) for 1.8=0.35 GeV/c (y(cm)=1.6) and 3.7 +/- 2.7 (stat.) +1.4,-1.5 (sys.) x 10^(-8) GeV^(-2)c^(2) for 1.4=0.26 GeV/c, and a coalescence parameter B2-bar of 4.1 +/- 2.9 (stat.) +2.3,-2.4 (sys.) x 10^(-3) GeV^(2)c^(-3). Abstract: We present results from Experiment 864 for antiproton production and antideuteron limits in Au + Pb collisions at 11.5 GeV/c per nucleon. We have measured invariant multiplicities for antiprotons for rapidities 1.4{lt}y{lt}2.4 at low transverse momentum as a function of collision geometry. When compared with the results from Experiment 878 our measurements suggest a significant contribution to the measured antiproton yield from the decay of strange antibaryons. We have also searched for antideuterons and see no statistically significant signal. Thus, we set upper limits on the production at approximately 3{times}10{sup {minus}7} per 10{percent} highest multiplicity Au+Pb interaction. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have built two very large planar straw tube detectors with 4 mm diameter tubes for AGS experiment E864. This is a Au+Pb collision experiment at 11.5 AGeV/c, designed to search for strangelets and other novel forms of matter. A central collision trigger requires tracking chambers to operate in a high multiplicity environment, with as many as 200 hits per event in the first data run, which represented an occupancy of 20%. Each detector consists of three planes of tubes, a vertical X plane as well as stereo U and V planes. Each plane has two close-packed layers of tubes. One detector is 40 cm×200 cm and contains 3×960 tubes, and the other is 80 cm×400 cm and has 3×1920 tubes. The function of the detector is to achieve high mass resolution in tracking charged particles, and it has been successfully used during three data runs at the AGS.

Abstract: Inclusive pizero and direct-photon cross sections in the kinematic range 3.5 < pT < 12 GeV/c with central rapidities are presented for 530 and 800 GeV/c proton beams and a 515 GeV/c pi- beam incident on beryllium targets. Current Next-to-Leading-Order perturbative QCD calculations fail to adequately describe the data for conventional choices of scales. Kinematic distributions from these hard scattering events provide evidence that the interacting partons carry significant initial-state parton transverse momentum (kT). Incorporating these kT effects phenomenologically greatly improves the agreement between calculations and the measured cross sections.

Abstract: We present results of a search for strange quark matter (strangelets) in 11.5 A GeV/c Au+Pb collisions from the 1994 and 1995 runs of experiment E864 at Brookhaven's AGS. We observe no strangelet candidates and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of approximately 3x10**-8 per 10% central interaction for the production of |Z|=1 and |Z|=2 strangelets over a large mass range and with metastable lifetimes of about 50 ns or more. These results place constraints primarily on quark-gluon plasma based production models for strangelets.

Abstract: We present the first results from the E864 Collaboration on the production of antiprotons in 10{percent} central 11.5A GeV /c Au+Pb nucleus collisions at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. We report invariant multiplicities for antiproton production in the kinematic region 1.4{lt}y{lt}2.2 and 50{lt} p{sub T}{lt} 300 MeV/c , and compare our data with a first collision scaling model and previously published results from the E878 Collaboration. Abstract: We present results on the production of high transverse momentum charm mesons in collisions of 515 GeV/c negative pions with beryllium and copper targets. The experiment recorded a large sample of events containing high transverse momentum showers detected in an electromagnetic calorimeter. From these data, a sample of charm mesons has been reconstructed via their decay into the fully charged K pi pi mode. A measurement of the single inclusive transverse momentum distribution of charged D mesons from 1 to 8 GeV/c is presented. An extrapolation of the measured differential cross section yields an integrated charged D cross section of 11.4+-2.7(stat)+-3.3(syst) microbarns per nucleon for charged D mesons with Feynman x greater than zero. The data are compared with expectations based upon next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, as well as with results from PYTHIA. We also compare our integrated charged D cross section with measurements from other experiments.

Abstract: We argue that as the atomic number of the target nucleus $A \to \infty$, the multiplicity of leading particles in hadron-nucleus collisions tends to a finite limit. The limiting multiplicities for various particle production are computed for both proton and pion projectiles. Signatures at finite A are discussed. Abstract: An experiment has been performed with the Fermilab 30-inch bubble chamber and Downstream Particle Identifier to study inclusive charged pion production in the high energy interactions of π±,K +,p and $$\bar p$$ with thin foils of magnesium, silver and gold. The laboratory rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are presented separately for π+ and π− production. Comparisons are made with data from hadron-proton interactions and theA dependence of the cross sections in the different kinematic regions is discussed. We investigate the dependence of the cross sections on the number of observed protons ejected from the nucleus. By using our π− A data from two different beam energies, we study the energy dependence of these spectra. Comparisons are made with the VENUS string model Monte Carlo.

Abstract: We present the results of a study of hadronic jets produced in association with direct photons and [pi][sup 0]'s at large transverse momenta in [pi][sup [minus]]Be and [ital p]Be collisions at 500 GeV/[ital c]. Using primarily charged particles to characterize the properties of the recoiling jets, we compare their fragmentation and angular distributions, and their correlation with the trigger particle, for both the [gamma] and [pi][sup 0] event samples. We also compare the data with QCD calculations that incorporate current parton distribution fuctions.

The data include incident [pi][sup [minus]] and [ital p] beams at 500 GeV/[ital c] on Be and Cu targets, and span the kinematic ranges of transverse momentum and rapidity of 3.5[le][ital p][sub [ital T]][le]10 GeV/[ital c] and [minus]0.7[le][ital y][sub c.m.][le]0.7, respectively. We have measured cross sections for [pi][sup 0] and direct-photon production, as well as the [eta]/[pi][sup 0] production ratio. From the data on Be and Cu, we have extracted the nuclear dependence of [pi][sup 0] production, parametrized as [ital A][sup [alpha]]. The cross sections are compared with next-to-leading-log QCD predictions for different choices of the QCD momentum scales and several sets of parton distribution functions.

Abstract: We present measurements from BNL AGS Experiment 864 of the $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{3}\mathrm{H}$ yield and of an upper limit on the $_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{4}\mathrm{H}$ yield in central $11.5A\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}∕c\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{Au}+\text{Pt}$ collisions. The measurements span a rapidity range from center of mass, ${y}_{\mathrm{c.m.}}$, to ${y}_{\mathrm{c.m.}}+1$ and a transverse momentum range of $0l{p}_{t}\ensuremath{\leqslant}1.5\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}∕c$. We compare these results with E864 measurements of stable light nuclei and particle unstable nuclei yields of the same baryon number. The implications of these results for the coalescence of strange clusters are discussed.

Abstract: We report measurements from experiment E864 at the BNL-AGS of the yields of particle unstable light nuclei in central collisions of ${}^{197}\mathrm{Au}$ with beam momentum of $11.5A$ $\mathrm{GeV}/c$ on ${}^{197}\mathrm{Pt}.$ Yields are reported as a function of rapidity for the nuclei ${}^{4}\mathrm{H},$ ${}^{4}\mathrm{Li},$ ${}^{5}\mathrm{He},$ and ${}^{5}\mathrm{Li}$ in the rapidity range from ${y}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}$ to ${y}_{\mathrm{c}.\mathrm{m}.}+0.8$ and in the transverse momentum range of approximately $0.1l~{p}_{T}/Al~0.4\mathrm{GeV}/c.$ The yields are compared to previously reported yields and trends for the production of stable light nuclei. The nonobservation of two excited states ${}^{5}{\mathrm{He}}_{16.75\mathrm{MeV}}^{*}$ and ${}^{5}{\mathrm{Li}}_{16.66\mathrm{MeV}}^{*}$ is used to set an upper limit on the yields of these states.

Abstract: A study of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass spectrum in ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}.$ The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{e}^{+}X$ and ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are presented as a function of the ${e}^{+}q$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}q$ branching ratios. These limits are used to constrain the production of leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks.

Abstract: We present the final results from Experiment 864 of a search for charged and neutral strange quark matter produced in interactions of 11.5 GeV/c per nucleon Au beams with Pt or Pb targets. Searches were made for strange quark matter with A>4. Approximately 30 billion 10% most central collisions were sampled and no strangelet states with A, 35 pages, 18 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract: Light nuclei can be produced in the central reaction zone via coalescence in relativistic heavy ion collisions. E864 at BNL has measured the production of ten light nuclei with nuclear number of A=1 to A=7 at rapidity $y\simeq1.9$ and $p_{T}/A\leq300MeV/c$. Data were taken with a Au beam of momentum of 11.5 A $GeV/c$ on a Pb or Pt target with different experimental settings. The invariant yields show a striking exponential dependence on nuclear number with a penalty factor of about 50 per additional nucleon. Detailed analysis reveals that the production may depend on the spin factor of the nucleus and the nuclear binding energy as well., (6 pages, 3 figures), some changes on text, references and figures' lettering. Abstract: Experiment E864 at the Brookhaven AGS accelerator uses a high sensitivity, large acceptance spectrometer, designed to search for strangelets and other novel forms of matter produced in high-energy heavy ion collisions. The spectrometer has excellent acceptance and rate capabilities for measuring the production properties of known particles and nuclei such as p, d and 6 He . The experiment uses a magnetic spectrometer and employs redundant time of flight and position detectors and a hadronic calorimeter. In this paper we describe the design and performance of the spectrometer.

Abstract: Collisions of 100 GeV π+, π−, p, and p with Mg, Ag, and Au foils have been studied in Fermilab Experiment E597 using the 30‐in bubble chamber and Downstream Particle Identifier. Rapidity distributions of observed net charge, including subtraction of relativistic protons from struck targets, are described. Comparisons are made with results on net charge from leading particle fragmentation in hadron‐proton experiments and from theoretical models.

Abstract: A charged particle spectrometer containing a 7120-channel silicon microstrip detector system, one component of Fermilab experiment E706 to study direct photon production in hadron-hadron collisions, was utilized in a run in which 6 million events were recorded. We describe the silicon system, provide early results of track and vertex reconstruction, and present data on the radiation damage to the silicon wafers resulting from the narrow high intensity beam.

Abstract: We report on the data analysis and techniques used to determine particle identification from the relativistic rise in ionization as detected by CRISIS, a 1 × 1 × 3 m 3 , 192 cell, ionization-sampling drift chamber containing an 80% argon/20% carbon dioxide gas mixture. For 100 GeV/ c protons/antiprotons (pions) we obtain an ionization FWHM of 7.6% (7.9%), which compares well with the design value of 7.8%. The separation between the mean ionization values for the protons and pions was determined to be 7.9%. We also present the analysis of particle identification for secondary particles produced by interactions in the bubble chamber. A statistical method for correcting for the overlapping ionization curves from secondary protons/antiprotons and pions is discussed.

Abstract: Silicon detectors having both “pad” and strip position sensitive configurations have been fabricated for the Helios experiment which requires an elaborate pulse height-dependent trigger as well as one dimensional silicon strip position sensing. The trigger detector is a 400 element, 30 mm diameter detector with readout connections from a ceramic overlay board. Tests with full prototype detectors have shown essentially 100% detection efficiency and excellent pulse height resolution well capable of delineating 0, 1 or 2 hits per pad. Strip detectors with 25 μm pitch and a varying readout pitch have been tested, which utilize both capacitive and resistive charge division. Techniques for realization of required interstrip resistors will be discussed and results which may compare these readout methods will be reported.

Abstract: We have measured the inclusive cross section for the reactions p+n..-->..p+X and ..pi../sup +/+n..-->..p+X at 100 GeV/c in the kinematic region t < 1.0 GeV/sup 2/. The data were obtained from an exposure of the Fermilab 30-in. deuterium-filled bubble chamber to a tagged positively charged beam. The differential cross sections for these reactions are observed to scale in the ratio of the pn and ..pi../sup +/n total cross sections and to be consistent with the predictions of a Reggeized one-pion-exchange model. Abstract: We have studied rescattering in 100-GeV/c proton and positive-pion interactions with deuterons in the Fermilab 30-in. bubble chamber. We study specifically events in which the deuteron breaks up and meson production occurs. After attempting to take account of elastic rescattering, we determine the fraction of events in which rescattering occurs, and the multiplicity distribution of the rescatter events. The rescatter fraction found for 100-GeV/c ..pi../sup +/d events is consistent with the values found in 21-GeV/c and 205-GeV/c ..pi../sup -/d experiments while the fraction found for 100-GeV/c pd events is slightly larger. The multiplicity distributions in the rescatter events are in reasonable agreement with 205-GeV/c pp or ..pi../sup -/p multiplicity distributions. We compare our results to predictions of energy-flux-cascade and coherent-tube models.

40. Developments in Analytical Diffraction Using Isotopic X-Ray Sources

Abstract: Lobov et al., in Leningrad, and workers at this laboratory have been working on the idea of using x rays from radioactive sources for x ray diffraction analysis. The Russians have been using iron-55 produced by the (n, Y) reaction in their work with a small focusing camera which operates in the back reflection region. We have been using iron-55 produced by the (p,n) reaction in conjunction with a small Debye-Scherrer camera. The preliminary work of this laboratory was reported at this conference two years ago. At that time a 13 mCi iron-55 source was used in a two inch diameter Debye-Scherrer camera to obtain x-ray diffraction patterns of LiF. The exposure times were of the order of 120 hours and the reflection from the 200 plane was about 3 degrees wide. Since that time a new and more intense source has been constructed at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. With the new source it was possible to produce LiF diffraction patterns of the same density and resolution as before in a period of less than ten hours.The above mentioned diffraction patterns were made with the LiF powder placed in a 1.0 mm diameter glass capillary. After reduction of the glass capillary diameter to 0.5 mm and appropriate reduction of the collimator width, we were able to improve the resolution considerably with no accompanying reduction in line density. The LiF patterns obtained in this way required an exposure time of about 20 hours and the width of the reflection from the 200 plane has been reduced to about 1.5 degrees.Hence we are able to report a reduction in exposure time from 116 hours to 20 hours and an increase in resolution by a factor of two over the data reported here two years ago. Thus the concept of using x rays from an isotope for powder diffraction has changed from a laboratory curiosity into a technique with practical possibilities. Both sources mentioned above were produced by the (p, n) reaction. The 135 mCi source had a specific activity of about 400 Ci/gm. Since iron-55 sources have been made with specific activities of about 1000 Ci/gm, a considerable decrease in exposure time could be accomplished by using such a source. The application to this work of a position sensitive proportional counter as developed by Semmler will also be discussed.

Abstract: Experimental multiplicity distributions scaled in the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) form for hadron-nucleus interactions show clear deviations from the scaling distribution observed for hadron-hadron interactions. The deviations become larger as A increases. Our data can be described by a model which invokes the hypothesis that KNO scaling is valid for hadron-nucleus interactions at a fixed impact parameter. In this model, the A dependence of the multiplicity distributions results from the convolution of scatterings at various impact parameters.

Abstract: We report on 100 GeV/c interactions of p and p with Ag and Au targets. This is a subset of the data from Fermilab experiment E597 and was performed with the 30‐inch bubble chamber and Downstream Particle Identifier. Final state protons with laboratory momentum less than 1.4 GeV/c have been identified by their ionization in the bubble chamber. Final state protons/antiprotons with laboratory momentum greater than 10 GeV/c have been identified using CRISIS, an ionization sampling drift chamber. The cross section and mean transverse momentum squared of the leading baryon from the reactions p+(Ag,Au)→p+X and p+(Ag,Au)→p+X are presented as a function of the rapidity loss of the leading baryon. The laboratory rapidity and transverse momentum squared of the associated pions are also presented.

Abstract: The photoproduction reaction γp → μ+ μ-p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 43.2pb-1. The Υ meson has been observed in photoproduction for the first time. The sum of the products of the elastic Υ(1S), Υ(2S),Υ(3S) photoproduction cross sections with their respective branching ratios is determined to be 13.3 ± 6.0(stat.)-2.3+2.7(syst.) pb at a mean photon-proton centre of mass energy of 120 GeV. The cross section is above the prediction of a perturbative QCD model. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Differential dijet cross sections have been measured with the ZEUS detector for photoproduction events in which the hadronic final state containing the jets is separated with respect to the outgoing proton direction by a large rapidity gap. The cross section has been measured as a function of the fraction of the photon (ϰγOBS) and pomeron (βOBS) momentum participating in the production of the dijet system. The observed ϰγOBS dependence shows evidence for the presence of a resolved- as well as a direct-photon component. The measured cross section da/dβOBS increases as βOBS increases indicating that there is a sizeable contribution to dijet production from those events in which a large fraction of the pomeron momentum participates in the hard scattering. These cross sections and the ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function can be described by calculations based on parton densities in the pomeron which evolve according to the QCD evolution equations and include a substantial hard momentum component of gluons in the pomeron.
