Abstract: At CELSIUS-WASA the two-pion production in proton-proton collisisons has been measured exclusively from threshold up to the energy regime, where both of the collision partners are expected to be excited to the Δ state. The measurements constitute the first kinematically complete data samples of solid statistics in this energy range. Most of the data have been obtained for the π+π- and π0π0channels. Whereas at near-threshold energies the differential distributions can be succesfully explained by chiral dynamics and Roper excitation, respectively, the data for the π+π- channel in the ΔΔ region can be described only, if the special configuration (ΔΔ)0+ is assumed. The data for the π0π0 channel moreover exhibit a low-mass enhancement in the π0π0 invariant mass spectrum, which is reminiscent of the ABC-effect found in double-pionic fusion to light nuclei.

Abstract: The ABC effect - a puzzling threshold enhancement in the ππ invariant mass spectrum of double-pionic fusion to nuclear bound states - has been investigated since 40 years by inclusive measurements without providing a conclusive interpretation. First exclusive measurements to this topic have now been carried out at CELSIUS-WASA. They confirm a huge ππ threshold enhancement, prove it to be of scalar-isoscalar nature, i.e., a σ-channel phenomenon and reveal the theoretically predicted high-mass enhancement in inclusive spectra to be of πππ rather than of ππ nature - falsifying thus corresponding model predictions for the ABC effect. From the kinematically complete data samples we infer that the interaction between the two Δ particles created in this process is of crucial importance.

Abstract: Exclusive measurements of the reactions p d → He 3 π + π − and p d → He 3 π 0 π 0 have been carried out at T p = 0.893 GeV at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The π + π − channel evidences a pronounced enhancement at low invariant ππ masses—as anticipated from previous inclusive measurements of the ABC effect. This enhancement is seen to be even much larger in the isoscalar π 0 π 0 channel. The differential distributions prove this enhancement to be of scalar–isoscalar nature. ΔΔ calculations give a good description of the data, if a boundstate condition is imposed for the intermediate ΔΔ system.

Abstract: The pp→ppx(x=γγ, π0π0, π+π-) reactions have been measured at CELSIUS in the energy range Tp=775-1360 MeV using the WASA 4π detector with hydrogen pellet target. Close to threshold the ppπ+π- data are in accordance with the Roper resonance concept and/or a dynamic formation of the σ meson. At higher energies the formation of the ΔΔ system becomes increasingly dominant. The ppπ0π0 channel basically shows similar features, however, develops a peculiar enhancement at small invariant masses Mπ0π0 - in resemblance of Bose-Einstein correlations. Alternatively, the enhancement could be also indicative of a (dynamic) isospin breaking due to ππ rescattering in the σ channel. The latter is favored by the results on pd→3 He x (x=π0π0, π+π-), where the observed π0π0 enhancements are still much larger. In the γγ channel a line at Mγγ=2mπ is observed. The possible nature of this line is discussed.

Abstract: Excitation functions of proton-proton elastic cross sections have been measured in narrow momentum steps Δp = 28 MeV/c in the kinetic energy range from 0.5 to 2.5 GeV and the angular range 35° ≤ Θ cm ≤ 90° with a detector providing ΔΘ cm ≈ 1.4° resolution and 82% solid angle coverage. Measurements have been performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY with an internal CH 2 fiber target; background corrections were derived from measurements with a carbon fiber target and from Monte Carlo simulations of inelastic pp contributions. Particular care was taken to monitor the luminosity as a function of beam energy. The results provide excitation functions and angular distributions of unprecedented precision and internal consistency. The measured cross sections are compared to recent phase shift analyses, and their impact on the present solution SM97 [1] is discussed.

12. Qualitätssicherung bei der Verwendung von Hochenergie-Bildsystemen

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Zur Kontrolle der Lagerung von Patienten wahrend der Bestrahlung mit hochenergetischen Photonen werden Hochenergie-Bildsysteme eingesetzt. Die durch den Patienten hindurchgetretene Strahlung wird genutzt, um Verifikationsbilder in Form digitaler Meβwerte zu erzeugen. In dieser Arbeit werden die Abbildungseigenschaften der drei kommerziellen Hochenergie-Bildsysteme „Theraview” (InfiMed Europe), „SRI 100” (Philips) und „BIS 710” (Wellhofer Dosimetrie) untersucht. Es kamen unterschiedliche Lochphantome, ein Drahtphantom zur Uberprufung der geometrischen Abbildungseigenschaften und ein Phantom in Form einer auf dem Kopf stehenden Pyramide zur Erzeugung eines kontinuierlichen Gradienten zum Einsatz. Zur Bewertung der Abbildung wurde fur Messungen mit Lochphantomen ein quantitatives Qualitatsmaβ definiert und zum Vergleich der Systeme herangezogen. Dadurch konnte gezeigt werden, daβ Lochphantome ohne Korrektur von Inhomogenitaten des Strahlungsfeldes zur Beurteilung von Hochenergie-Bildsystemen ungeeignet sind. Geometrische Verzerrungen lieβen sich mit dem Drahtphantom nachweisen. Die Pyramide wurde genutzt, um die Langzeitstabilitat der Systeme zu untersuchen und dosimetrische Inhomogenitaten des Strahlungsfeldes sichtbar zu machen. Um diese Untersuchungen durchfuhren zu konnen, war eine spezielle Software („MVI-Programm”) erforderlich, die einen direkten Zugriff auf die Meβwerte erlaubt. Die mit den untersuchten Hochenergie-Bildsystemen vertriebenen Softwareprogramme waren hierfur wenig geeignet. Es wurde ein Werkzeug geschaffen, mit dem sich die Rohdaten der unterschiedlichen bildgebenden Systeme auf der Grundlage gleicher Abbildungsvorschriften anzeigen lassen und eine numerische Analyse der Meβwerte moglich ist. Auβerdem ermoglicht es eine Manipulation der Meβwerte wie z. B. die Subtraktion zweier Bilder und eine Archivierung von Meβwerten und Bildern in einer Datenbank.

Abstract: The simultaneous measurement of prompt and resonant 3π0 production at CELSIUS/WASA is used to deduce an upper limit for the pp→pp3π0 cross section of σ=1μb for Tp=1360 MeV . A preliminary determination of the slope parameter α for the η→3π0 Dalitz plot based on ca. 11700 events agrees in sign with the world average.

Abstract: A small ionisation chamber with a magnesium wall, internally coated with 10B (Mg/B-chamber) was used to determine the spatial distributions of thermal neutrons in a water phantom at a DT-14.1 MeV neutron facility. The measured distributions of thermal neutron flux can be described with a comparatively simple model: By superimposing single Gaussian distributions of thermal neutrons, each created by a “pencil beam” of fast neutrons, we have found parameters to fit the measured flux of thermal neutrons with an accuracy of 20 % (in the field of fast neutrons) to 40 % (outside the field). This model can be used as a basis to calculate the photon contamination (which is mostly due to the capture reaction 1H(n,γ)2H) and the flux of thermal neutrons with respect to Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) in a fast neutron beam.

Abstract: Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

Abstract: A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Abstract: Inclusive jet cross sections are measured in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 detector. The data sample of e+ p -> e+ + jet + X events in the kinematic range of photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 95 < W_gammap < 285 GeV represents an integrated luminosity of 24.1 pb^-1. Jets are defined using the inclusive k_T algorithm. Single- and multi-differential cross sections are measured as functions of jet transverse energy E_T^jet and pseudorapidity ��^jet in the domain 5 < E_T^jet < 75 GeV and -1 < ��^jet < 2.5. The cross sections are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations corrected for fragmentation and underlying event effects. Abstract: A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb −1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

Abstract: Measurements of the scattered electron energy spectrum and the differential cross sections dσ/d log(x) and dσ/dQ2 for inclusive neutral current deep inelastic electron-proton scattering are presented. The data were obtained with the H1 detector at HERA during its first running period in which 26.7 GeV electrons collided with 820 GeV protons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.3 nb−1 and allow the first studies of the structure of the proton at values of x down to 10−4 for Q2 > 5 GeV2.

Abstract: We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σtot (γp) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

Abstract: We report on the investigation of the final state in interactions of quasi-real photons with protons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. Evidence for hard interactions is seen in both single particle spectra and jet formation. The data can best be described by inclusion of resolved photon processess as predicted by QCD.

Abstract: The ABC effect -- an intriguing low-mass enhancement in the $\pi\pi$ invariant mass spectrum -- is known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear fusion reactions. First exclusive measurements carried out at CELSIUS-WASA for the fusion reactions leading to d or $^3$He reveal this effect to be a $\sigma$ channel phenomenon associated with the formation of a $\Delta\Delta$ system in the intermediate state and combined with a resonance-like behavior in the total cross section. Together with the observation that the differential distributions do not change in shape over the resonance region the features fulfill the criteria of an isoscalar s-channel resonance in $pn$ and $NN\pi\pi$ systems, if the two emitted nucleons are bound. It obviously is robust enough to survive in nuclei as a dibaryonic resonance configuration. Abstract: We recently stored a 1.85 GeV/c vertically polarized deuteron beam in the COSY Ring in Julich; we then spin‐flipped it by ramping a new air‐core rf dipole’s frequency through an rf‐induced spin resonance to manipulate the polarization direction of the deuteron beam. We first experimentally determined the resonance’s frequency and set the dipole’s rf voltage to its maximum; then we varied its frequency ramp time and frequency range. We used the EDDA detector to measure the vector and tensor polarization asymmetries. We have not yet extracted the deuteron’s tensor polarization spin‐flip parameters from the measured data, since our short run did not provide adequate tensor analyzing‐power data at 1.85 GeV/c. However, with a 100 Hz frequency ramp and our longest ramp time of 400 s, the deuterons’ vector polarization spin‐flip efficiency was 48±1%.

Abstract: Excitation functions A_N(p_{lab},Theta_{c.m.}) of the analyzing power in elastic proton-proton scattering have been measured in an internal target experiment at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY with an unpolarized proton beam and a polarized atomic hydrogen target. Data were taken continuously during the acceleration and deceleration for proton kinetic energies T_{lab} (momenta p_{lab}) between 0.45 and 2.5 GeV (1.0 and 3.3 GeV/c) and scattering angles 30 deg < Theta_{c.m.} < 90 deg. The results provide excitation functions and angular distributions of high precision and internal consistency. The data can be used as calibration standard between 0.45 and 2.5 GeV. They have significant impact on phase shift solutions, in particular on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1.0 and 1.8 GeV., 13 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: Exclusive measurements of the two-pion production channel pp → ppπ+π− have been carried out near threshold at CELSIUS with the PROMICE/WASA detector. They reveal $pp \to pp*\left( {1440} \right) \to pp\sigma \to pp\left( {{\pi ^ + }{\pi ^ - }} \right)I = \ell = 0$ as the dominant process at these energies, however, the data exhibit also significant contributions from ${p^*}\left( {1440} \right) \to \Delta \pi \to p\left( {{\pi ^ + }{\pi ^ - }} \right)I = \ell = 0$ ${p^*}\left( {1440} \right) \to \Delta \pi \to p\left( {{\pi ^ + }{\pi ^ - }} \right)I = \ell = 0$ From the observed interference of these Roper decay routes their relative branching ratio is derived. The status on the search for N N-decoupled N N π-resonances is reviewed with regard to recent experimental searches in the pionic double charge exchange in nuclei, the two-pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, the photo pion-production on the deuteron and the electro pion-production in nuclei.

Abstract: At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/Jülich spin-correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A(NN), A(SS), and A(SL) for c.m. scattering angles between 30 degrees and 90 degrees. Our data on A(SS)--the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV--clearly disagrees with predictions of available pp scattering phase-shift solutions while A(NN) and A(SL) are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.

Abstract: The EDDA experiment is designed to study p + p excitation functions with high energy resolution and narrow step size in the kinetic energy range from 250 MeV to 2500 MeV at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY. Measurements during the accelertion phase in conjunction with internal targets will allow to achieve a fast and precise energy variation. Prototypes of the detector elements and the fiber target have been extensively tested with proton and electron beams; the detector performance and trigger efficiency have been studied in Monte Carlo simulations. In this contribution, results concerning detector design, prototype studies, Monte Carlo simulations and the anticipated detector resolutions will be reported.

Abstract: The pp--pp pi(+) pi(-) reaction has been measured exclusively near threshold at CELSIUS. The total cross sections are nearly an order of magnitude lower than expected from previous inclusive measurements. The differential cross sections reveal pp--pp(*)(1440)--pp sigma = pp(pi(+)pi(-))(I = l = 0) as the dominant process as well as significant contributions from p(*)--Delta(++)pi(-)--psigma. The observed anisotropy in the proton angular dependence is consistent with heavy-meson exchange. In the invariant mass spectra, no narrow structures of statistical relevance (3sigma) are found.

34. pp Elastic Scattering: New results from EDDA (COSY)

Abstract: In the EDDA experiment excitation functions of proton-proton elastic scattering are studied with narrow steps in the projectile momentum range from 0.8 to 3.4 GeV/c and the angular range 35°⩽Θcm⩽90° with a detector providing ΔΘcm≈1.4° resolution and 85% solid angle coverage. Measurements are performed continuously during projectile acceleration in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY. In phase 1 of the experiment spin-averaged differential cross sections dσ/dΩ have been measured with an internal CH2 fiber target; background corrections were derived from measurements with a carbon fiber target and from Monte Carlo simulations of inelastic pp contributions. The results provide excitation functions and angular distributions of high precision and internal consistency. In phase 2 of the experiment excitation functions of the analyzing power AN have been measured using a polarized (P⩾75%) atomic beam target, and those of the polarization correlation parameters ANN, ASS and ASL will be measured lateron with the polarized...

Abstract: General aspects of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA as well as technical descriptions of the magnet, luminosity system, trigger, slow-control, data acquisition and off-line data handling are given. The three major components of the detector, the tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors, will be described in a forthcoming article. The present paper describes the detector that was used from 1992 to the end of 1994. After this a major upgrade of some components was undertaken. Some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given.

Abstract: Simultaneous measurements of the neutron and photon dose using thermoluminescence detectors of the type TLD-300 by means of the two main glow peaks reveal an inconsistency in the determination of the response coefficients in the radiation field of a 14.1 MeV therapy unit. Evaluation of the neutron sensitivity relative to that for photons results in a systematic variation with the depth in the phantom. This variation can be reproduced in a first approximation by a modified method of linear regression, if in addition to the primary 14.1 MeV neutron component a second one from scattered neutrons of approximately half of this energy is assumed. The observed inconsistency can be attributed to the variation of the neutron spectrum with the position in the phantom and is essentially suppressed by using 1.5 mm thick Teflon instead of A-150 as encapsulating material for TLD-300. In consequence, the photon sensitivities h, for both glow peaks turn out to be 1.0 and the two neutron sensitivities k i in A-150 material are independent of the position in the phantom.

Abstract: The differential cross sections for the ({ital p},{ital n}) reaction to the ground-state and first 2{sup +} excited analogs of the four even palladium isotopes (104, 106, 108, and 110) have been measured at a proton bombarding energy of 26 MeV. Integrated cross sections for the analog states deviate from the linear dependence on neutron excess as was previously found in other sets of isotopes, e.g., the molybdenum and zirconium isotopes. The observed dependence on deformation of the ground-state analog transition is in quantitative agreement with calculations, which include the inelastic couplings originally used to explain the molybdenum results. Detailed ten-coupled-channels calculations including the ground state, the one- and two-quadrupole phonon collectives states in Pd, and their analogs in Ag give excellent agreement simultaneously with proton elastic scattering, proton inelastic scattering to the first 2{sup +} state, ground-state analog transitions, and 2{sup +} analog-state transitions. The effect of the one-step isovector deformation was too small to be extracted from these data.

Abstract: Double differential cross sections for the inclusive production of neutrons, protons, and ..cap alpha.. particles from /sup 59/Co and /sup 60/Ni bombarded with ..cap alpha.. particles of energies E/sub ..cap alpha../ = 28 and 32 MeV, respectively, have been measured for several angles between 15/sup 0/ and 160/sup 0/. Hybrid model calculations for the preequilibrium decay consistently yield initial excitation numbers n/sub 0/ = 5(4) for both neutron and proton emission from ..cap alpha..+/sup 59/Co (..cap alpha..+/sup 60/Ni) if pairing effects are taken into account. The angular distributions of nucleons and ..cap alpha.. particles differ from those of the reactions p+/sup 62/Ni, /sup 63/Cu; they are discussed in the framework of the generalized exciton model that distinguishes between multistep direct and multistep compound contributions.

Abstract: Double differential cross sections for the inclusive production of neutrons from64Zn,65Cu and89Y bombarded with 26.0 MeV protons have been measured with time-of-flight techniques. The data reduction is discussed with respect to the influence of background corrections in the continuous part of the spectra, and a short comparison with preequilibrium model calculations is presented, showing good agreement with predictions of both, the hybrid and the geometry-dependent hybrid model including multiple particle emission. The question of how to treat pairing remains open.

42. Precompound nucleon angular distributions in the continuum

Abstract: Angular distributions for nucleon-induced reactions (incident energies 14 to 90 MeV) leading to precompound nucleon emission in the continuum (emitted particle energies 9-70 MeV) are calculated based on nucleon-nucleon scattering kinematics for an incident nucleon on a Fermi gas. Analytic expressions due to Kikuchi and Kawai are used for the single scattering kernel. The geometry dependent hybrid model is used to generate the differential cross sections for first, second, etc., order scattering, these weightings being used to fold the single scattering kernel. Results are found to reproduce all experimental angular distributions quite well at angles in the 20\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}-90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} range. Ad-hoc modifications to approximate quantal effects and Coulomb deflections are explored, but the results do not seem to offer a consistent means of reproducing back angle yields, and give generally poorer results at very forward angles.

Abstract: A master equation is used to predict spectra of the type (α, α') under the assumption that the mechanism is a quasi-free intranuclear alpha-nucleon scattering process. The treatment applied to α-clusters is general for any cluster. The parameters of the model are described, and comparisons are presented between experimental angle integrated (α, α') spectra and results of the assumed quasi-free scattering mechanism.

Projectile energies have been chosen to populate the composite systems12C* and13C* in energy ranges overlapping for 31MeV≦E *(12C)≦38MeV and 26 MeV≦E *(13C)≦33Mev, respectively. The attainable thick target yields are highest forp+11B. Statistical model calculations fail to quantitatively reproduce the experimental data although preequilibrium decay modes have been taken into account.

45. Measurement and statistical analyses of fission and fusion excitation functions forCl35onNi62,Sn116, andPr141up toElab=215MeV

Abstract: Evaporation residue and fission-like cross sections are reported for the bombardment of $^{62}\mathrm{Ni}$, $^{116}\mathrm{Sn}$, and $^{141}\mathrm{Pr}$ targets with 200 and 215 MeV $^{35}\mathrm{Cl}$ ions. These data plus data previously reported at lower energies have been analyzed by a Hauser-Feshbach statistical code with Bohr-Wheeler model fission competition. The rotating liquid drop model was used to evaluate effective fission barriers. Barrier reductions of 35-45% of the rotating liquid drop model values were required over an angular momentum range for which fission was measured, in agreement with earlier analyses. The sensitivity of results of results to the sharp cutoff assumption was tested and found to be unimportant over the energy ranges covered in this work.

46. Single particle effects in precompound reactions

Abstract: Double differential cross sections have been measured with time of flight techniques at 16 angles between 3.5/sup 0/ and 159/sup 0/ (lab) for the inclusive production of neutrons from reactions of 25 MeV protons with /sup 50,52,53/Cr, /sup 54,56,58/Fe, /sup 59/Co, /sup 60/Ni, /sup 63/Cu, /sup 89/Y, /sup 90,91,92,94/Zr, /sup 92,94,95,96,97,98,100/Mo, /sup 110/Pd, and /sup 159/Tb and of 18 MeV protons with /sup 90,91,92,94/Zr. The spectra from /sup 90,91,92,94/Zr targets are compared with qualitative and quantitative predictions based on proton-particle--neutron-hole state densities generated from different sets of single particle states using the recursion method of Williams et al. An end point gap of nearly 4 MeV in the /sup 91/Zr(p,n) spectrum may be understood quantitatively in terms of such an extreme single particle model argument. The experimental peak structure shows reasonably good agreement with the calculated results. It is shown that precompound spectra exhibit pronounced structure which is dependent upon nuclear structure effects for near closed shell nuclei, and that these effects should and do disappear rapidly with nuclear deformation, as predicted earlier by Williams et al.

47. Single-particle effects in precompound reactions: Influence of thef7/2shell closure

Abstract: We present angle integrated spectra for the (p,n) reaction with 25 MeV protons on targets of $_{{\mathrm{}}^{50}}$,52,${\mathrm{}}_{24}^{53}$Cr, and on $_{26}^{58}\mathrm{Fe}$, $_{27}^{59}\mathrm{Co}$, $_{28}^{60}\mathrm{Ni}$, and $_{29}^{63}\mathrm{Cu}$. These spectra are compared with two-quasiparticle state densities for proton-particle\char21{}neutron-hole configurations, calculated using Nilsson-model single-particle energies. The influence of shell structure on the precompound spectra, previously shown for the ${g}_{9/2}$ neutron shell closure, is shown here for the ${f}_{7/2}$ neutron and proton shells. Semiquantitative agreement is shown between experimental results and calculated two-quasiparticle densities. The parameter space of pairing energy, deformation, and oscillator stiffness is explored. Precompound spectra near shell closures are in better agreement with partial state densities from Nilsson-model considerations than with results from more commonly used equidistant spacing models.

Abstract: The excitation function of the reaction 11B(n,α)8Li(β)8Be*(2α) has been measured for neutrons with energies between 15.5 and 19 MeV. The reaction was identified by the α-decay of the 8Be* occurring with the lifetime of the residual nucleus 8Li. The detector for the α-particles was a gridded ionization chamber.

Abstract: The cross sections for the reactions N14(n, α)B11 and N14(n, t)C12 have been measured in the neutron energy range 4.0 to 6.4 MeV and at 2.5 MeV. Mono-energetic neutrons were produced in the D(d, n) He3 reaction using a gas target. The (n, α) and (n, t) disintegrations were detected in a gridded ionization chamber filled with an argonnitrogen mixture. The response of the chamber under different operation conditions is described. The excitation functions, measured with a neutron energy resolution of 40 to 50 keV, are given for theα0 group from the N14(n,α)B11 reaction over the entire neutron energy range and for theα1 group and the t0 group from N14(n, t) C12 for neutron energies above 4.3 and 5.6 MeV, respectively.

50. (α,n) cross sections in the region of anomalousαscattering

Abstract: Cross sections for the production of neutrons from the bombardment of /sup 40/Ca, /sup 44/Ca, and /sup 40/Ar targets with 24.1 MeV ..cap alpha.. particles at 30degree (lab) have been measured. For /sup 40/Ar and /sup 44/Ca smooth evaporation spectra are observed with a cross section of about 100 mb; for /sup 40/Ca pronounced structures appear in the spectrum which correspond to high-spin states in the residual nucleus /sup 43/Ti. The observed cross section for /sup 40/Ca is about one order of magnitude smaller than for /sup 40/Ar and /sup 44/Ca; it is, however, more than 3 times larger than expected from evaporation calculations.
