To reveal the connections between the 2024 moment magnitude (Mw) 7.5 Noto earthquake in Japan and the seismicity swarms that preceded it, we investigated its rupture process through near-source waveform analysis and source imaging techniques, combining seismic and geodetic datasets. We found notable complexity in the initial rupture stages. A strong fault asperity, which remained unbroken in preceding seismic swarms, slowed down the rupture. Then, a second rupture initiated at the opposite edge of the asperity, and the asperity succumbed to double-pincer rupture fronts. The failure of this high-stress drop asperity drove the earthquake into a large-scale event. Our observations help unravel the crucial role of fault asperities in controlling swarm migration and rupture propagation and underscore the need for detailed seismological and interdisciplinary studies to assess seismic risk in swarm-prone regions. Physical mechanisms that contribute to the generation of fracture waves in condensed media under intensive dynamic impacts have not been fully studied. One of the hypotheses is that this process is associated with the blocky structure of a material. As the loading wave passes, the compliant interlayers between blocks are fractured, releasing the energy of self-balanced initial stresses in the blocks, which supports the motion of the fracture wave. We propose a new efficient numerical method for the analysis of the wave nature of the propagation of a system of cracks in thin interlayers of a blocky medium with complex rheological properties. The method is based on a variational formulation of the constitutive relations for the deformation of elastic–plastic materials, as well as the conditions for contact interaction of blocks through interlayers. We have developed a parallel computational algorithm that implements this method for supercomputers with cluster architecture. The results of the numerical simulation of the fracture wave propagation in tempered glass under the action of distributed pulse disturbances are presented. Over the past decades, surface wave methods have been routinely employed to retrieve the physical characteristics of the first tens of meters of the subsurface, particularly the shear wave velocity profiles. Traditional methods rely on the application of the multichannel analysis of surface waves to invert the fundamental and higher modes of Rayleigh waves. However, the limitations affecting this approach, such as the 1D model assumption and the high degree of subjectivity when extracting the dispersion curve, motivate us to apply the elastic full‐waveform inversion, which, despite its higher computational cost, enables leveraging the complete information embedded in the recorded seismograms. Standard approaches solve the full‐waveform inversion using gradient‐based algorithms minimizing an error function, commonly measuring the misfit between observed and predicted waveforms. However, these deterministic approaches lack proper uncertainty quantification and are susceptible to get trapped in some local minima of the error function. An alternative lies in a probabilistic framework, but, in this case, we need to deal with the huge computational effort characterizing the Bayesian approach when applied to non‐linear problems associated with expensive forward modelling and large model spaces. In this work, we present a gradient‐based Markov chain Monte Carlo full‐waveform inversion where we accelerate the sampling of the posterior distribution by compressing data and model spaces through the discrete cosine transform. Additionally, a proposal is defined as a local, Gaussian approximation of the target density, constructed using the local Hessian and gradient information of the log posterior. We first validate our method through a synthetic test where the velocity model features lateral and vertical velocity variations. Then we invert a real dataset from the InterPACIFIC project. The obtained results prove the efficiency of our proposed algorithm, which demonstrates to be robust against cycle‐skipping issues and able to provide reasonable uncertainty evaluations with an affordable computational cost. Driven by the scientific objective of geophysical field detection and natural hazard monitoring from space, China launched an electromagnetic satellite, which is known as the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01), on 2 February 2018, into a circular sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude of about 507 km in the ionosphere. The CSES-01 has been in orbit for over 6 years, successfully exceeding its designed 5-year lifespan, and will continually operate as long as possible. A second identical successor (CSES-02) will be launched in December 2024 in the same orbit space. The ionosphere is a highly dynamic and complicated system, and it is necessary to comprehensively understand the electromagnetic environment and the physical effects caused by various disturbance sources. The motivation of this report is to introduce the typical electromagnetic waves, mainly in the ELF/VLF band (i.e., ~100 Hz to 25 kHz), recorded by the CSES-01 in order to call the international community for deep research on EM wave activities and geophysical sphere coupling mechanisms. The wave spectral properties and the wave propagation parameters of those typical EM wave activities in the upper ionosphere are demonstrated in this study based on wave vector analysis using the singular value decomposition (SVD) method. The analysis shows that those typical and common natural EM waves in the upper ionosphere mainly include the ionospheric hiss and proton whistlers in the ELF band (below 1 kHz), the quasiperiodic (QP) emissions, magnetospheric line radiations (MLR), the falling-tone lightning whistlers, and V-shaped streaks in the ELF/VLF band (below 20 kHz). The typical artificial EM waves in the ELF/VLF band, such as power line harmonic radiation (PLHR) and radio waves in the VLF band, are also well recorded in the ionosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hemodialysis therapy is an extracorporeal circulation treatment that serves as a substitute for renal function. In Japan, patients receive this efficient four-hour treatment, three times per week, allowing them to maintain a social life nearly equivalent to that of healthy individuals. Before the treatment, two punctures are performed to establish extracorporeal circulation, and a high blood flow rate is essential to ensure efficient therapy. Specialized blood vessels created through arteriovenous fistula (AVF) surgery are utilized to achieve high blood flow rates. Although the AVF allows safe and efficient dialysis treatment, AVF stenosis leads to a serious problem in dialysis. To early detect this abnormal blood flow, auscultation and palpation methods are widely used in hospitals. However, these methods can only provide qualitative judgment of the AVF condition, so the results cannot be shared among other doctors and staff. Additionally, since the conventional methods require contact with the skin, some issues require consideration regarding infection and low reproducibility. In our previous study, we proposed an alternative method for auscultation using non-contact optical imaging technology. This study aims to construct a reliable AVF stenosis detection method using Thrill waveform analysis based on the developed non-contact device to solve the problem with the contact palpation method. This paper demonstrates the performance validation of the non-contact imaging in the normal AVF group (206 total data, 75 patients, mean age: 69.1 years) and in the treatable stenosis group (107 total data, 17 patients, mean age: 70.1 years). The experimental results of the Mann–Whitney U test showed a significant difference ( p = 0.0002 ) between the normal and abnormal groups, which indicated the effectiveness of the proposed method as a new possible alternative to palpation. This work aims to analyze the propagation of fully nonlinear waves, encompassing shear, extension, and bending deformation modes, within homogenized periodic nonlinear hexagonal and triangular networks, successively considering 1D and 2D situations. The wave analysis is conducted from the expression of the effective strain energy density of periodic hexagonal and triangular lattices in the nonlinear regime by a continualization of the discrete lattice equations, considering all forms of energy. We incorporate strain gradient effects into the continuous model to account for the wave‐dispersive nature. The resulting second‐gradient nonlinear continuum exhibits subsonic and supersonic propagation modes. We first examine in a 1D situation the dynamical response of the hexagonal and triangular lattices, considering varying levels of nonlinearity quantified by a single scalar valued parameter. We further evaluate the impact of a fully nonlinear analysis compared to an analysis solely based on the shear energy, regarding both supersonic and subsonic modes. The nonlinear wave propagation analysis is then extended to a 2D situation for the same two lattices. It is shown that the longitudinal mode exhibits a higher frequency at a low degree of nonlinearity; however, as the degree of nonlinearity increases, the shear mode surpasses the longitudinal mode in terms of frequency. As the wavenumber increases, the nonlinearity has a lesser impact on the frequency behavior, and the phase velocity is more influenced by other factors, such as the second gradient contributions of the effective constitutive law. In automated hearing threshold determination procedures, prespecified response- time limits can be applied to evaluate whether a stimulus was truly heard by checking whether the test subject reacts to the onset and the offset of the stimuli within given time intervals. The influence of different response-time limits on the threshold of normal-hearing test subjects was investigated. Two-stage hearing threshold level measurements applying the ISO 8253-1 (2010) bracketing procedure were performed. Pre-tests at 125 Hz and 1000 Hz were carried out with maximum accepted response times of 600 ms, 1000 ms, and 1200 ms. Subsequently, thresholds were measured at the seven octaves between 125 Hz and 8000 Hz with maximum accepted response times of 600 ms and 1000 ms. 15 test subjects in pre-tests, 25 test subjects in the main study. Threshold levels determined with a maximum accepted response time of 1000 ms are 2.6 dB lower than those obtained with a maximum accepted response time of 600 ms (95% CI −1.6 dB to 6.9 dB). The threshold shift was similar at all frequencies. Based on this study, response-time limits after both stimulus onset and offset of at least 1000 ms are recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work, the general stiffness matrix method is extended in the case of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic plate to analyze the free vibration response of a functionally graded composite plate. The material properties are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. The novelty of this paper is to utilize this efficient method to the dynamic analysis of a wide range of composite (multilayer) plates, with linear or non-linear thickness profiles, and functionally graded in the thickness, without any limitation. The convergence of this method is thoroughly discussed. Here, the converged results are obtained when the number of sub-layer is $ N \le 11 $ N ≤ 11. A parametric study was also conducted to show the effect of gradation of mechanical properties of the composite on the phase velocity and the modal shape. The dynamic model developed here can be used in the graded material design of the functionally graded piezoelectric-piezomagnetic (noted FGPPM) composite plate for achieving specified dynamic characteristics. There is a correlation between nonlocal time and space in the nanostructures which are attacked by waves whose length lies in the range of the nanostructure's intrinsic characteristic lengths. This temporal–spatial coupling affects the viscoelastic behaviors of the nanostructures. In such a case, the conventional tempo-spatially decoupled nonlocal viscoelasticity is not able to provide accurate dynamic responses. To resolve this problem, the present paper focuses on the development of a novel fractional nonlocal time–space strain gradient viscoelasticity and shows its application in the wave propagation analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) nanobeams. The fractional constitutive equations are derived on the basis of the combination of the well-known nonlocal strain gradient elasticity and fractional nonlocal time–space hypotheses. The motion equations of the beam-type elements are presented on the basis of the refined higher-order beam theory and Hamilton's principle. With this newly developed nonlocal theory, the governing equations of the nanobeam are extracted. Afterward, an analytical wave solution will be utilized to achieve the loss factor of the problem. The results of this work reveal that an increase in the nonlocal parameter can reduce the loss factor in a remarkable way due to the coupling between the nonlocalities in the spatial and temporal domains. This research is concerned with the analysis of wave propagation of multi-scale hybrid composite beams subjected to various types of thermal loading. Carbon fiber (CF) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are assumed as reinforcements that are distributed in the matrix. The homogenization process is performed exerting the Halpin–Tsai model and the rule of mixture. Different types of temperature rise, namely, uniform, linear and sinusoidal temperature rise are presumed to present a more trustworthy thermal analysis. The beam is rested on Winkler–Pasternak foundation. A refined trigonometric shear deformable beam theory is used to compute the kinetic relations without any external shear correction coefficient. Governing equations are derived implementing Hamilton's principle and then solved analytically. Eventually, the effects of different parameters, such as CNT's weight fraction, the volume fraction of CF, elastic foundation, different types of temperature rise, etc., on wave frequency and phase velocity. are provided numerically in the framework of a set of illustrations. Variants of perioperative cardiac output-guided haemodynamic therapy algorithms have been tested over the last few decades, without clear evidence of effectiveness. Newer approaches have focussed on individualisation of physiological targets and have been tested in early efficacy trials. Uncertainty about the benefits remains. The scattering of flexural waves in piezoelectric thin plates with defects effects the electro-mechanical coupling property. Theoretical analysis for flexural waves is lack of a suitable decoupling function. Here, we have developed a method based on applied electric field to make a solution of the dynamic moment concentration factor (DMCF) for flexural waves scattering problems. The DMCFs of the piezoelectric materials have been found that it is significantly larger than those of the ordinary elastic materials because of electro-mechanical coupling. In the region of low frequency, DMCFs have a dependence on applied electric field and independent on the incident angle. Those opposite phenomena are observed as the frequency increasing. Love-type wave propagation in a functionally graded material bonded by a layer of functionally graded fiber-reinforced material and an elastic half-space is investigated in this paper. The mechanical imperfections at the common interface between the layers and half-space have been considered. Solutions to mechanical displacements are obtained by solving the coupled field equations of the layers and elastic half-space with the help of the separation of variables technique. Appropriate boundary conditions have been applied to establish the dispersion equations for Love-type wave propagation in imperfect and perfect interfaces. Dispersion curves have been plotted to illustrate the significant effects of parameters such as gradient coefficients, reinforcement, interfacial imperfection, and thickness ratio on the phase velocity of Love-type wave propagation. This paper presents graphical demonstrations of the effects of each parameter under imperfect and perfect cases, and provides a detailed theoretical discussion of these parameters. This study can provide theoretical guidance for designing and optimizing functionally graded materials-based devices. Practical Applications: This study examines functionally graded materials in engineering, exploring their classification, mathematical formulations, application in solving specific problems, analytical methodologies, and obstacles impeding their widespread use. This study is innovative and relevant to aerospace, civil engineering, and construction applications. In aerospace engineering, these materials can be used for structural components like panels, wings, and fuselage parts due to their lightweight nature and high strength-to-weight ratio. It can be used for reinforced concrete structures in civil engineering and building construction, offering enhanced strength and durability. Therefore, examining the propagation of Love-type waves in these structures is crucial. Finally, we illustrate the effects of various parameters where grading the facings of a composite structure results in an impressive improvement in its stability and dispersive characteristics. In this article, the dynamic behavior and solitary wave solutions of the Akbota equation were studied based on the analysis method of planar dynamic system. This method can not only analyze the dynamic behavior of a given equation, but also construct its solitary wave solution. Through traveling wave transformation, the Akbota equation can easily be transformed into an ordinary differential equation, and then into a two-dimensional dynamical system. By analyzing the two-dimensional dynamic system and its periodic disturbance system, planar phase portraits, three-dimensional phase portraits, Poincar'e sections, and sensitivity analysis diagrams were drawn. Additionally, Lyapunov exponent portrait of a dynamical system with periodic disturbances was drawn using mathematical software. According to the maximum Lyapunov exponent portrait, it can be deduced whether the system is chaotic or stable. Solitary wave solutions of the Akbota equation are presented. Assessing the impact of climate change on wave conditions, including average and extreme waves, is vital for numerous marine-related activities, industries, coastal vulnerability, and marine habitats. Previous research, primarily on a large scale, has investigated this topic, but its relevance for marginal basins like the Adriatic Sea is limited due to the low resolution of the wave models used and atmospheric forcing. To contribute to filling in the gap, here we implemented a high-resolution model (about 2 km) for the period 1992-2050. The future wave climate is simulated for the RCP8.5 emission scenario. This model, developed within the AdriaClim project, comprises, among others, a high-resolution atmospheric downscaling, a circulation Limited Area Model and a spectral wavemodel. A comparison of our simulation's results with Copernicus Marine Service wave reanalysis on the historical baseline, confirms its accuracy in reproducing both average wave parameters and 95th percentile values, as well as the seasonal cycle, showing the AdriaClim model's suitability as a source to predict future wave climates in the Adriatic Sea. The projected changes suggest a slight increase in average significant wave height and mean wave period, and a more significant decrease at the 95th percentile, with a relevant variability by location and season, partially aligning with previous studies. This study highlights the potential effect of local climate change in coastal areas and the importance of developing long-term simulation with a downscaled modeling system for regional areas. AbstractThe study explores the propagation of symmetric and antisymmetric fundamental Lamb waves in laminated composite strips, employing multi-field piezo-elastic plate models. The findings indicate the necessity of employing higher-order kinematic models to enhance the accuracy of wave propagation assessments. To further optimize computational efficiency, node-dependent kinematic models are utilized. The research delves into the tradeoff between reducing computational costs and maintaining result accuracy demonstrating a reduction of up to 60% in computational expenses in simple models while keeping the error below 1%. This is the first time the characteristics of wave propagation of infinite double‐layer auxetic functionally graded porous (FGP) sandwich plates connecting with shear connectors in a hygro‐thermal environment are explored. Each layer component consists of an auxetic FG sandwich material, which contains a core layer made of auxetic honeycomb, while the upper and bottom ones are made of FGP materials. The whole structure is placed on a three‐parameter Kerr elastic medium. Hamilton's principle is used to develop fundamental equations of motion. Then, a Navier closed‐form solution is employed to tackle propagating wave equations. By comparing the current findings with those found in the literature, the precision and validity of the suggested approach are proven. In addition, comprehensive parametric research is conducted to demonstrate the impact of the material‐graded value and shear connection on the propagation in the structure. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have shown great potentials in cardiovascular disease diagnosis and postoperative assessment. Patient‐specific and well‐tuned boundary conditions are key to obtaining accurate and reliable hemodynamic results. However, CFD simulations are usually performed under non‐patient‐specific flow conditions due to the absence of in vivo flow and pressure measurements. This study proposes a new method to overcome this challenge by tuning inlet boundary conditions using data extracted from electrocardiogram (ECG). Five patient‐specific geometric models of type B aortic dissection were reconstructed from computed tomography (CT) images. Other available data included stoke volume (SV), ECG, and 4D‐flow magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ECG waveforms were processed to extract patient‐specific systole to diastole ratio (SDR). Inlet boundary conditions were defined based on a generic aortic flow waveform tuned using (1) SV only, and (2) with ECG and SV (ECG + SV). 4D‐flow MRI derived inlet boundary conditions were also used in patient‐specific simulations to provide the gold standard for comparison and validation. Simulations using inlet flow waveform tuned with ECG + SV not only successfully reproduced flow distributions in the descending aorta but also provided accurate prediction of time‐averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) in the primary entry tear (PET) and abdominal regions, as well as maximum pressure difference, ∆Pmax, from the aortic root to the distal false lumen. Compared with simulations with inlet waveform tuned with SV alone, using ECG + SV in the tuning method significantly reduced the error in false lumen ejection fraction at the PET (from 149.1% to 6.2%), reduced errors in TAWSS at the PET (from 54.1% to 5.7%) and in the abdominal region (from 61.3% to 11.1%), and improved ∆Pmax prediction (from 283.1% to 18.8%) However, neither of these inlet waveforms could be used for accurate prediction of TAWSS in the ascending aorta. This study demonstrates the importance of SDR in tailoring inlet flow waveforms for patient‐specific hemodynamic simulations. A well‐tuned flow waveform is essential for ensuring that the simulation results are patient‐specific, thereby enhancing the confidence and fidelity of computational tools in future clinical applications. This study conducted integrated experiments and computational modeling to investigate the speeds of a developing shock within granular salt and analyzed the effect of various impact velocities up to 245 m/s. Experiments were conducted on table salt utilizing a novel setup with a considerable bore length for the sample, enabling visualization of a moving shock wave. Experimental analysis using particle image velocimetry enabled the characterization of shock velocity and particle velocity histories. Mesoscale simulations further enabled advanced analysis of the shock wave's substructure. In simulations, the shock front's precursor was shown to have a heterogeneous nature, which is usually modeled as uniform in continuum analyses. The presence of force chains results in a spread out of the shock precursor over a greater ramp distance. With increasing impact velocity, the shock front thickness reduces, and the precursor of the shock front becomes less heterogeneous. Furthermore, mesoscale modeling suggests the formation of force chains behind the shock front, even under the conditions of weak shock. This study presents novel mesoscale simulation results on salt corroborated with data from experiments, thereby characterizing the compaction front speeds in the weak shock regime. The possibility of using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique, along with Lamb wave analysis, was investigated in this study for damage detection and characterization of polymer carbon fiber (CFRP) composites with the help of numerical modeling. The finite element model (FEM) of the composite specimen with artificial damage was developed in ANSYS and validated by the results of full-field DIC strain measurements. A quantitative analysis of the damage detection capabilities of DIC structure surface strain measurements in the context of different defect sizes, depths, and orientation angles relative to the loading direction was conducted. For Lamb wave analysis, a 2D spatial-temporal spectrum analysis and FEM using ABAQUS software were conducted to investigate the interaction of Lamb waves with the different defects. It was demonstrated that the FEM updating procedure could be used to characterize damage shape and size from the composite structure surface strain field from DIC. DIC defect detection capabilities for different loadings are demonstrated for the CFRP composite. For the identification of any composite defect, its characterization, and possible further monitoring, a methodology based on initial Lamb wave analysis followed by DIC testing is proposed. Substrate-free electrodes are promising dry electrodes for long-term physiological electrical signal monitoring due to their ultra-thinness, conformal contact, and stable skin–electrode impedance. However, the response of substrate-free electrodes to various disturbances during electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring and the corresponding optimization needs to be investigated. This paper investigates the specific effects of various influencing factors on skin–electrode impedance and ECG during electrocardiogram (ECG) detection. The research utilizes substrate-free poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrodes. The investigation employs several methods, including skin–electrode impedance comparison, ECG waveform analysis, spectrum analysis, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) evaluation. To avoid the impact of physiological state differences in subjects at different times, relevant data were only compared with the same group of experiments conducted in the same period. The results demonstrate that the substrate-free conformal contact PEDOT:PSS electrode has more stable skin–electrode impedance and could obtain a more stable ECG than partial contact electrodes (the SNR of the partial contact and conformal contact electrodes are 1.2768 ± 4.0299 dB and 7.2637 ± 1.4897 dB, respectively). Furthermore, the ECG signal quality of the substrate-free conformal contact PEDOT:PSS electrode was independent of the electrode area and shape (the SNRs of the large, medium, and small electrodes are 4.0447 ± 0.4616 dB, 3.9115 ± 0.5885 dB, and 4.1556 ± 0.5557 dB, respectively; the SNRs of the circular, square, and triangular electrodes are 9.2649 ± 0.6326 dB, 9.2471 ± 0.6806 dB, and 9.1514 ± 0.6875 dB, respectively), showing high signal acquisition capability that is the same as microneedle electrodes and better than fabric electrodes. The results of clothing friction effects show that skin–electrode impedance stability was important for ECG stability, while the impedance value was not (the SNRs of friction and non-friction electrodes are 2.4128 ± 7.0784 dB and 9.2164 ± 0.6696 dB, respectively). Moreover, the skin–electrode impedance maintains stability even at a high breathing frequency, but the ECG signal fluctuates at a high breathing frequency. This experiment demonstrates that even when the skin–electrode impedance remains stable, the ECG signal can still be susceptible to interference from other factors. This study suggests that substrate-free PEDOT:PSS that could form conformal contact with the skin has higher skin–electrode impedance stability and could measure a high ECG signal even with a small electrode area, demonstrating its potential as dry ECG electrodes, but the interference from other physiological electrical signals may require better circuit design. Surface waves are widely used in the study of underground structures at various scales because of their dispersion characteristics in layered media. Whether in natural seismology or engineering seismology, surface wave analysis methods have matured and developed for their respective fields. However, in oil and gas exploration, many data processors still tend to consider surface waves as noise that needs to be removed. To make more people pay attention to the application of surface waves and widely utilize surface waves carrying the near surface information in oil and gas exploration, this paper takes the data processing of LH site in Qinghai, China as an example to apply surface wave analysis methods to oil and gas exploration. We first preprocess and perform dispersion imaging method on the seismic record in the LH site to obtain frequency-phase velocity spectrum with good resolution and signal-to- noise ratio. Then, utilizing clustering algorithms, it automatically identifies and picks dispersion curves. Finally, through a simultaneous inversion algorithm of velocity and thickness, it inverts the dispersion curves and obtain S-wave velocity profiles in the depth range of 0-200 m. The near surface is divided into four zones based on velocity ranges and depth ranges. Additionally, we apply the surface waves inversion results as constraints to first-arrival tomography and obtain objectively accurate P-wave velocity profiles and Poisson's ratio profiles. The results indicate that by applying surface wave analysis methods, the near surface velocity information carried by surface waves can be extracted, providing near surface velocity models for static correction and migration. At the same time, compared with the surface wave application in engineering seismology, the scale of oil and gas exploration is larger, so that the data processing of surface waves is particularly important, otherwise it will affect the picking of the dispersion curve and inversion. This study employs precise, accurate, and efficient analytical and numerical techniques to obtain novel and accurate solitary wave solutions for the (2+1)-dimensional Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur (AKNS) equation. The Khater II (Khat II) method and extended cubic-B-spline (ECBS) scheme are utilized as recent computational and accurate numerical techniques, respectively, for investigating the AKNS equation and constructing highly precise solitary wave solutions. The stability characteristics of the obtained solutions are also analyzed to ensure their applicability. These solutions are characterized by their peak amplitudes, wave speeds, and widths. Through comparisons with previous numerical techniques, our proposed approach demonstrates superior effectiveness and reliability. The research is significant due to the application of the (2+1)-dimensional AKNS equation in modeling various physical phenomena, such as nonlinear optics, water waves, and plasma physics. A review of the S‐velocity structure beneath South America, for the crust and upper mantle, is performed using a recent methodology based on Rayleigh wave analysis, and a new 3D S‐velocity model (from 0 to 400 km depth) is achieved for this study area. The precise location and structure of the asthenosphere have been both determined from this new model, which have not been obtained in other previous studies, allowing to know how the different geological units that compose South America are delimited in terms of S‐velocity and lithosphere thickness. For example, the highest S‐velocities and the thickest lithosphere of the cratonic areas, are determined at the east of the Amazonian Craton and the São Francisco Craton. The lithosphere beneath the Guyana Shield is thinner than beneath the Central Brazil Shield, and the lithospheric root of the Amazonian Craton is determined deeper than the São Francisco Craton. The lithosphere at the east of the Central Brazil Shield is the thickest (~200‐km thick). Another interesting feature depicted in terms of S‐velocity and lithosphere thickness is the Transbrasiliano Lineament, which is determined in the crust and the upper mantle, confirming that it is not just a surface feature but a deep feature. Introduction/Aims Methods Results Discussion Conventional F wave analysis involves a relatively uniform physiological environment induced by supramaximal stimulations. The F wave characteristics in a dynamic physiological condition, however, are rarely investigated. This study aimed to improve understanding of F wave properties in the more dynamic process by introducing a novel method to analyze F waves based on the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) scan technique.Twenty four healthy subjects participated in the study. The CMAP scan was applied to record muscle responses in the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) and abductor digiti minimi (ADM) muscles, respectively. F wave characteristics including mean F wave amplitude and latency (F‐M latency), persistence and activating threshold were quantified.An average of 200 F waves per muscle were obtained from the CMAP scan recording. Weak to moderate correlations between F wave amplitude and stimulating intensity were observed in most of the APB (19 muscles; r = 0.33 ± 0.14, all p < .05) and ADM (23 muscles, r = 0.46 ± 0.16, all p < .05) muscles. Significantly longer mean F latency and lower activating F‐threshold were found in the ADM muscles (F‐M latency: APB: 25.43 ± 2.39 ms, ADM: 26.15 ± 2.32 ms, p < .05; F‐threshold: APB: 7.68 ± 8.96% CMAP, ADM: 2.35 ± 2.42% CMAP, p < .05).This study introduces new features of F waves using the CMAP scan technique and identifies differences of F wave characteristics between the hand muscles. The miniaturisation, ultra-thinness and high-density multi-layer structure of advanced microelectronic packages complicate the propagation mechanism of ultrasonic waves. In this paper, a finite element model is used to simulate ultrasonic wave propagation in flip chip packages, investigating the laws of transmission and reflection at the lamination boundaries. The acoustic field of ultrasonic transducers is simulated using MATLAB and Abaqus software. The angular spectrum method (ASM) based on the Fourier transform is adopted to more precisely reveal the distribution characteristics and attenuation relationship of near-field ultrasonic waves. The influence of the frequency and size of the ultrasonic transducer on the propagation characteristics of ultrasonic waves is analysed. Based on an acoustic field map generated by the detection model, the waveform conversions of acoustic waves in a multi-layer structure are analysed. The results show that ultrasonic waves are mainly presented in the form of reflected and transmitted waves at the layered interface and the model with a perfectly matched layer (PML) has higher accuracy. Therefore, this method is applied to ultrasonic testing in a flip chip package, which cannot only effectively exclude interference from boundary reflection but also greatly improve the reliability of waveform conversions analysis. Background Risk prediction in haemodialysis (HD) patients is challenging due to the impact of the dialysis regime on the patient's volume status and the complex interplay with cardiac function, comorbidities and hypertension. Cardiac function as a key predictor of cardiovascular (CV) mortality in HD patients is challenging to assess in daily routine. Thus the aim of this study was to investigate the association of a novel, non-invasive relative index of systolic function with mortality and to assess its interplay with volume removal. Methods A total of 558 (373 male/185 female) HD patients with a median age of 66 years were included in this analysis. They underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, including wave intensity analysis [i.e. S:D ratio (SDR)]. All-cause and CV mortality served as endpoints and multivariate proportional hazards models were used for risk prediction. Intradialytic changes were analysed in tertiles according to ultrafiltration volume. During a follow-up of 37.8 months, 193 patients died (92 due to CV reasons). Results The SDR was significantly associated with all-cause {univariate hazard ratio [HR] 1.36 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20–1.54], P  < .001} and CV [univariate HR 1.41 (95% CI 1.20–1.67), P  < .001] mortality. The associations remained significant in multivariate analysis accounting for possible confounders. Changes in the SDR from pre-/early- to post-dialytic averages were significantly different for the three ultrafiltration volume groups. Conclusion This study provides well-powered evidence for the independent association of a novel index of systolic function with mortality. The present paper is intended to frame-out the analytical approach to study the transference of Love-type waves in a viscoelastic sandy layer sandwiched between a size-dependent consistent couple stress to take care of earth's interior microstructural nature and an orthotropic viscoelastic half-space. An additional parameter termed as characteristic length which is used to investigate the internal microstructural structure of the earth's interior, which provides us the deeper insights of the analysis of wave propagation aspects. With the help of analytical variable separable technique, the closed version of dispersion equation for the Love-type waves has been derived. The impacts of different material parameters like characteristic length (l), sandy parameter (η 2 ′) , viscoelastic parameters (F 1, F 2, F 3), thickness ratio (H 3), and imperfectness parameter (σ 1, σ 2) which are involved in this study are encapsulated by means of graphs on the phase velocity of Love-type waves. This paper presents an in-depth study of the stress wave behavior propagating in a Rayleigh–Love rod with sudden cross-sectional area variations. The analytical solutions of stress waves are derived for the reflection and transmission propagation behavior at the interface of the cross-sectional area change in the rod, considering inertia and Poisson's effects on the rod material. Examples solved using the finite element method are provided to verify the correctness of the analytical results. Based on the forward analysis of Rayleigh–Love wave propagation in a rod impacted by a striker rod, an impact-echo-type nondestructive testing (NDT) method is proposed to conduct defect assessment in rod-type structural components with sudden cross-sectional area changes within a cover medium. The Indonesian throughflow (ITF) in the eastern part of Indonesia passes through the Maluku, Taliabu, Sula, and Buru Islands to the Banda Sea. The average depth of the Buru and Sula Islands is between 1000 m and 5000 m, with a narrow gap (sill) located to the north and south at a depth of 165 m on the sea map. This topography makes for interesting research on the western waters of Buru Island. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain salinity, temperature, and density values as water column stratification associated with the internal wave (IW), thermocline area, and current patterns at specific depths in the waters of Buru Island, Banda Sea. Data were collected from initial observations of Sentinel 1 satellite imagery of Buru Island to obtain an image of the waves in the water area. Furthermore, a single beam echosounder (SBES), conductivity temperature depth (CTD), and Copernicus Marine were analysed at the same position and time. The research found a non-linear IW Mode 2 at depths of 440–540 m with an estimated amplitude length is 40 km and an amplitude height of 100 m. Based on SBES echogram imaging, CTD data analysis, and modelling, there was an increase in IW density, a 35.25 PSU increase in salinity value at depths of 50~200 m, a temperature decrease of 27.5 ◦C to 10 ◦C at depths of 50~300 m, and a density stratification of 23.5 kg/m³ to 27 kg/m³ at depths of 50~300 m. In this research, we study a variety of solutions like periodic, exponential, rational, hyperbolic and Jacobian elliptic function solutions of Rangwala–Rao equation (RRE) by employing complete discrimination system for polynomial (CDSP) technique. We deduce the relevant travelling wave system from the original equation using the travelling wave transformation and generate a conserved quantity, the Hamiltonian, from it. With the aid of qualitative theory of differential equation and bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems a variety of phase portraits to the relevant travelling wave system of RRE are explored. The CDSP approach is not only useful for generating soliton solutions but also for carrying out qualitative analysis. Background: The bispectral index (BIS) monitor is the most frequently used electroencephalogram (EEG)‐based depth of anesthesia (DoA) technology in Norwegian hospitals. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the extent and clinical impact of its use and how anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists use the information provided by the DoA monitors in their clinical practice. Methods: This cross‐sectional survey on the use of DoA monitors in Norway used a web‐based questionnaire distributed to anesthesia personnel in all hospitals in Norway. Participation was voluntary and anonymized, and the web form could not track IP sources or respondents' locations. Results: Three hundred and ninety‐one nurse anesthetists (n = 324) and anesthesiologists (n = 67) responded. Among the EEG‐based DoA monitoring tools, BIS was most often used to observe and assess patients' DoA (98%). Raw EEG waveform analysis (10%), EEG‐spectrogram (9%), and suppression rate (10%) were seldom used. Twenty‐seven percent of the anesthesia personnel were able to recognize a burst suppression pattern on EEG and its significance. Fifty‐eight percent of the respondents considered clinical observations more reliable than BIS. Almost all respondents reported adjusting anesthetic dosage based on the BIS index values (80%). However, the anesthetic dose was more often increased (90%) because of high BIS index values than lowered (55%) because of low BIS index values. Conclusion: Despite our respondents' extensive use of DoA monitoring, the anesthesia personnel in our survey did not use all the information and the potential to guide the titration of anesthetics the DoA monitors provide. Thus, anesthesia personnel could generally benefit from increased knowledge of how EEG‐based DoA monitoring can be used to assess and determine individual patients' need for anesthetic medication. This article provides a rigorous mathematical analysis of acoustic wave scattering induced by a high-contrast subwavelength resonator whose material density is periodically modulated in time, and with a modulation frequency that is much larger than the one of the incident wave. We find that in general, the effect of the fast modulation is averaged over time and that the system behaves as an unmodulated resonator with an apparent effective density. However, under a suitable tuning of the modulation, which achieves a matching between temporal Sturm-Liouville and spatial Neumann eigenvalues, the low frequency incident wave becomes suddenly able to excite high frequency modes in the resonator. This phenomenon leads to the generation of scattered waves carrying high frequency components in the far field, and to the existence of exponentially growing outgoing modes. Background and Aim: Hearing-impaired individuals have difficulty comprehending and producing speech sounds. Cochlear implantation is used to augment hearing. The present study aims to compare the production of fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ and affricate /ʧ/ by Persianspeaking Cochlear-Implanted (CI) and Normal-Hearing (NH) children Methods: Fifteen Persian-speaking NH children and 15 Persian-speaking CI children, matched for age, gender, and general health conditions, were included in the study. The stimuli included two voiceless Persian fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ and one voiceless Persian affricate /ʧ/ along with the open front vowel /æ/ in three Consonant-Vowel (CV), Consonant-VowelConsonant (CVC), and Vowel-Consonant (VC) contexts (/sæ/, /æsæ/, /æs/, /ʃæ/, /æʃæ/, /æʃ/, /ʧæ/, /æʧæ/, /æʧ/). After recording all utterances, Praat software was used to measure the friction duration, rise time, and spectral peak of the consonants Results: The CI children could not distinguish between /ʃ/ and /ʧ/ and produced affricate /ʧ/ as an allophone of /ʃ/ (p=0.01). Moreover, distinguishing between two fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ was difficult for both groups. While NH children slightly treated these two sounds differently, the CI group produced fricative /s/ as an allophone of /ʃ/ (p=0.02). The rise time of /ʃ/ was longer in the NH children, except for /ʧæ/, where the CI children had a longer rise time. Conclusion: The speech of CI children is different in producing /s/, /ʃ/, and /ʧ/ from their NH peers. BACKGROUND: The interpretation of ventilator waveforms is essential for effective and safe mechanical ventilation but requires specialized training and expertise. This study aimed to investigate the ability of ICU professionals to interpret ventilator waveforms, identify areas requiring further education and training, and explore the factors influencing their interpretation skills. METHODS: We conducted an international online anonymous survey of ICU professionals (physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists [RTs]), with 6 1 y of experience working in the ICU. The survey consisted of demographic information and 15 multiple-choice questions related to ventilator waveforms. Results were compared between professions using descriptive statistics, and logistic regression (expressed as odds ratios [ORs; 95% CI]) was performed to identify factors associated with high performance, which was defined by a threshold of 60% correct answers. RESULTS: A total of 1,832 professionals from 31 countries or regions completed the survey; 53% of respondents answered 6 60% of the questions correctly. The 3 questions with the most correct responses were related to waveforms that demonstrated condensation (90%), pressure overshoot (79%), and bronchospasm (75%). Conversely, the 3 questions with the fewest correct responses were waveforms that demonstrated early cycle leading to double trigger (43%), severe under assistance (flow starvation) (37%), and early/reverse trigger (31%). Factors significantly associated with 6 60% correct answers included years of ICU working experience (6 10 y, OR 1.6 [1.2-2.0], P < .001), profession (RT, OR 2.8 [2.1-3.7], P < .001), highest degree earned (graduate, OR 1.7 [1.3-2.2], P < .001), workplace (teaching hospital, OR 1.4 [1.1-1.7], P 5 .008), and prior ventilator waveforms training (OR 1.7 [1.3-2.2], P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Slightly over half respondents correctly identified 6 60% of waveforms demonstrating patient-ventilator discordance. High performance was associated with 6 10 years of ICU working experience, RT profession, graduate degree, working in a teaching hospital, and prior ventilator waveforms training. In the time-frequency analysis of the echoes from targets with composite micro-motions, there is a problem that the energy of time-frequency strip is difficult to focus, which affects the extraction and analysis of the target's micro-Doppler feature. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the concept of time-frequency harmonic stripes and corresponding time-frequency transformation methods. Based on the assumption that the composite micro-motions include central motion components and high-frequency motion components, firstly, spline function is used to fit the frequency curve of the central motion component, and therefore construct the time-frequency transform kernel is constructed. Then, parameterized time-frequency transform is used to convert the composite micro-Doppler signal in the time domain to harmonic stripes on the time-frequency plane. Compared with traditional methods such as short-time Fourier transform and pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution, the proposed method can significantly improve the energy aggregation and spur suppression of time-frequency transform of radar echoes from composite micro-motion targets. The primary aim of this investigation is to conduct a comparative analysis on the anticipated intervals at which significant wave height (Hs) will occur. The spectral partition technique was used to separate time series. Next, they utilized three established methods for extreme value analysis: (1) Initial Distribution: This method assumes a specific probability distribution for the data and estimates the return period for extreme Hs values based on that distribution. (2) Peak Over Threshold (POT): This approach identifies exceedances of a chosen threshold (a significant wave height) and analyzes those extreme events to estimate return periods. (3) Annual Maximums: Here, the highest Hs value for each year is extracted, and the return period is estimated based on this series of annual maxima. By analyzing extremes in both the combined data and each individual series, the researchers discovered that one series likely contributes more significantly to extreme Hs values within the overall dataset. This suggests that the separate series might represent different wave regimes with varying influences on extreme events. This article reports on the characteristics of fracture process zone in steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) under the mode I fracture process using acoustic emission (AE) testing. The generated AE waveforms during mode I fracture process in SFRC were recorded in the laboratory. Using a statistical analysis of AE waveforms, it was observed that as the loading increases, a damage zone consisting of numerous microcracks develops ahead of the predefined notch tip. The location of the generated AE events related to the numerous microcracks were classified into three zones namely (i) major damage, (ii) moderate damage and (iii) low damage. The areas of these regions were evaluated from the distribution of the AE events around the pre-notch. The number of AE events reduced with the increase in the steel fibre content under the same experimental conditions. The major damage zone was located ahead of the notch tip very closely and it comprised of AE events with (i) high peak amplitude, (ii) low information entropy and (iii) longer AE waveform duration. Characteristics of random ocean waves have been measured by different devices, and X-band marine radar is one of the typical devices. This study proposes an enhanced methodology for estimating the significant wave height of ocean waves through the analysis of X-band radar images, particularly leveraging the shadowing characteristics inherent within radar images. The enhancement of the shadowing-based algorithm is achieved by incorporating three different key physical properties of ocean waves. These include the spatial autocorrelation function (SACF) in the Smith function, the orthogonal property of mean surface slopes, and the relationship of high-order spectral moments. The enhanced algorithm is complementarily integrated with fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based spectral analysis, facilitating the determination of significant wave height without the necessity for supplementary reference measurements. Numerical tests have been conducted using synthetic and real radar images corresponding to various sea states to validate the accuracy and reliability of the proposed methodology. The results demonstrate that the proposed techniques consistently improve the estimation accuracy of significant wave heights for both synthetic and real radar images. Even though the measured real radar images used for validation are not exhaustive in terms of the amount of dataset and range of sea state severity, considering that the proposed technique is in its early development stage, it is inspiring that its effectiveness and physical validity have been demonstrated through the present study. A modeling technique for a nearshore hybrid wind–wave energy converter system (HWWECS) is presented in this research. The model consists of the buoy, wind system, and generator, allowing simulation of the HWWECS's behavior in response to varied wave circumstances, such as different wave heights and periods. The HWWECS is made up of two buoy units and a wind system that work together to power a generator. The Wave Analysis at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (WAMIT) software is used to calculate the hydrodynamic forces. Detection of scrap floating for a stamping die with 0.8 mm-thick A1050 aluminum sheets was conducted with multiple retrofit accelerometers attached to the outside of the stamping die-set. The accelerometers were attached to three locations on the side of the stripper plate and one location on the side of the punch plate of a 3-ϕ30 hole blanking die using a magnet-based jig. Anomaly detection technique using the Mahalanobis–Taguchi system was conducted with the gravity analysis of the waveform of the accelerometers' signal. A total of 106 experiments without foreign objects (i.e., a scrap) were conducted to collect instances of the signal profile for the normal samples. In addition, 24 error samples with a foreign object were fabricated for anomaly detection tests. Only one of the four locations achieved 100% accuracy in detection using only one sensor. In detection using only one sensor, only one of the four locations achieved 100% accuracy. We attempted to improve the accuracy by increasing the amount of learning. However, the accuracy did not improve by increasing the amount of training except for the one sensor mentioned above. This result implies that machine learning, in which features are predefined by the user, cannot compensate for the disadvantage of sensor location by the amount of training. Then, combinations of the sensors were examined. Learning with all features of all 4 sensors (i.e., with 12 features) resulted in a still imperfect separation between normal and error samples. However, even if a single sensor causes false positives, it was possible to combine the influential features of multiple sensors, that were chosen by SN ratio analysis, to detect all anomalies without false positives. In future work, we would like to consider the detection of anomalies with multi-discipline features and combine anomaly detection systems with design and quality control systems. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) serves as a crucial optical technique in the realm of chemical sensing. Under specific conditions, the reflectivity of a thin metal film exhibits an exceptional sensitivity to optical changes in the medium on one side. In this investigation, we propose and simulate a plasmonic sensor incorporating a silicon nitride grating with Ag layers for the detection of solution and gas at an optical communication wavelength of 1550 nm. In both cases of the surface diffraction-grating, there is a notable enhancement in angular sensitivity compared to conventional prism-coupled configurations. Simulations, employing rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA), highlight that the suggested sensor, optimized in design parameters, offers notably superior sensitivity, a lower detection limit, and a higher figure of merit (FOM) than existing grating-based SPR sensors. BACKGROUND: Conventional methods for the separation of 1,3‐propanediol (1,3‐PDO) are problematic in many ways. The study of a simple and efficient separation process was the key to solving the bottlenecks that have restricted the large‐scale development of 1,3‐PDO. In order to solve the difficulty of separating 1,3‐PDO from fermentation broths, a ternary selective extraction system was constructed to separate 1,3‐PDO from a simulated solution and fermentation broth. RESULTS: In this study, quantum chemistry calculation and wave function analysis showed that the reaction between phenylboronic acid and 1,3‐PDO is thermodynamically feasible, stable and covalently reversible. The ternary extraction system was composed of 1‐naphthylboric acid, dichloromethane and Aliquat 336. After optimization of the extraction conditions, a high extraction efficiency of 82.6% could be achieved for 1,3‐PDO. Meanwhile, the stripping recovery of 1,3‐PDO was over 90%, with a high purity (98.6%), from a simulated solution using 0.4 mol L−1 hydrochloric acid as stripping solution. The extraction selectivity of 1,3‐PDO to glycerol, acetic acid and butyric acid in the fermentation broth reached 12.9, 230.6 and 233.7, respectively, implying a high selective performance compared with the aldehyde‐based traditional reactive extraction. We propose a new point-prediction model, the DEep Learning WAVe Emulating model (DELWAVE), which successfully emulates the behaviour of a numerical surface ocean wave model (Simulating WAves Nearshore, SWAN) at a sparse set of locations, thus enabling numerically cheap large-ensemble prediction over synoptic to climate timescales. DELWAVE was trained on COSMO-CLM (Climate Limited-area Model) and SWAN input data during the period of 1971–1998, tested during 1998–2000, and cross-evaluated over the far-future climate time window of 2071–2100. It is constructed from a convolutional atmospheric encoder block, followed by a temporal collapse block and, finally, a regression block. DELWAVE reproduces SWAN model significant wave heights with a mean absolute error (MAE) of between 5 and 10 cm , mean wave directions with a MAE of 10–25°, and a mean wave period with a MAE of 0.2 s. DELWAVE is able to accurately emulate multi-modal mean wave direction distributions related to dominant wind regimes in the basin. We use wave power analysis from linearised wave theory to explain prediction errors in the long-period limit during southeasterly conditions. We present a storm analysis of DELWAVE, employing threshold-based metrics of precision and recall to show that DELWAVE reaches a very high score (both metrics over 95 %) of storm detection. SWAN and DELWAVE time series are compared to each other in the end-of-century scenario (2071–2100) and compared to the control conditions in the 1971–2000 period. Good agreement between DELWAVE and SWAN is found when considering climatological statistics, with a small (≤ 5 %), though systematic, underestimate of 99th-percentile values. Compared to control climatology over all wind directions, the mismatch between DELWAVE and SWAN is generally small compared to the difference between scenario and control conditions, suggesting that the noise introduced by surrogate modelling is substantially weaker than the climate change signal. MATS (Mesospheric Airglow/Aerosol Tomography and Spectroscopy) is a Swedish satellite designed to investigate atmospheric dynamics in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT). By observing structures in noctilucent clouds over polar regions and oxygen atmospheric-band (A-band) emissions globally, MATS will provide the research community with properties of the MLT atmospheric wave field. Individual A-band images taken by MATS's main instrument, a six-channel limb imager, are transformed through tomography and spectroscopy into three-dimensional temperature fields, within which the wave structures are embedded. To identify wave properties, particularly the gravity wave momentum flux, from the temperature field, smaller-scale perturbations (associated with the targeted waves) must be separated from large-scale background variations using a method of scale separation. This paper investigates the possibilities of employing a simple method based on smoothing polynomials to separate the smaller and larger scales. Using using synthetic tomography data based on the HIAMCM (HIgh Altitude Mechanistic general Circulation Model), we demonstrate that smoothing polynomials can be applied to MLT temperatures to obtain fields corresponding to global-scale separation at zonal wavenumber 18.
