Search

This is an autoethnographic article that unpicks the author's experiences of navigating the form and the social world of contact improvisation (CI) as a crip bodymind that routinely passes as normative and (very) 'able'. Drawing on fieldnotes made across a year of practising and studying CI in London, it considers what kind of subjectivities and social relations this dance form summons, encourages and constitutes. This article proposes that the ideal subject of CI is characterized by vitality, agility, intense desire, openness to risk, an ability to attune to oneself and to others and a combination of self-reliance and willingness (and capacity) to cooperate. The article draws parallels and (dis)continuities between these features and the aspects of subjecthood fostered by late capitalist 'risk society' and the risk subjects it conjures. It then enquires whether this ideal subject is compatible with certain neurodivergent and other crip ways of being-in-the-world. The article proceeds to consider how, and if, space can be made in CI for what is ironically defined here as the 'wimp' subject: less disposed to embrace risk; not adept at quick decision-making; not thrill-seeking, and easily overwhelmed by sensory and nervous stimulation. CYGNO is an international collaboration with the aim of operating a Image 3 optical time projection chamber (TPC) for directional Dark Matter (DM) searches and solar neutrino spectroscopy, to be deployed at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). A Image 1/Image 2 (60/40) mixture is used, along with a triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) cascade to amplify the ionisation signal. The scintillation produced in the electron avalanches is read out using a scientific complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (sCMOS) camera. This solution has proven to provide very high sensitivity to interactions in the few Image 4 energy range. The inclusion of a hydrogen-based gas will offer an even lighter target, resulting in a more efficient energy transfer in a DM particle collision, and consequently, a lower detection threshold. Additionally, longer track lengths of light nuclear recoils are easier to detect with a clearer direction. However, the addition of such gas will contribute to quenching the scintillation, jeopardizing the TPC performance. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of adding 1% to 5% isobutane to the Image 1/Image 2 (60/40) mixture by measuring the respective absolute scintillation yield output. The overall scintillation produced in the charge avalanches is not drastically suppressed by quenching due to the isobutane addition. The presence of Penning transfer from excited He atoms to isobutane molecules increases the number of electrons in the avalanches, partially compensating for the loss of scintillation due to quenching. For the highest applied GEM voltage, the total number of photons produced in the avalanche per Image 4 deposited in the absorption region presents a decrease of only a factor of about three, from 2.30(20)×104 to 8.2(4)×103 Image 5, as the isobutane content increases from 0 to 5%. The quantification of the visible component of the scintillation shows that isobutane quenches both visible and ultraviolet (UV) photons emitted by Image 1/Image 2.

The Dark matter Experiment using Argon Pulse-shape discrimination (DEAP) has been designed for a direct detection search for particle dark matter using a single-phase liquid argon target. The projected cross section sensitivity for DEAP-3600 to the spin-independent scattering of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on nucleons is 10−46cm2 for a 100 GeV/c2 WIMP mass with a fiducial exposure of 3 tonne-years. This paper describes the physical properties and construction of the DEAP-3600 detector.

Collider signatures with top quarks provide sensitive probes of dark matter (DM) production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this article, we review the results of DM searches in final states with top quarks conducted by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations at the LHC, including the most recent results on the full LHC Run 2 dataset. We highlight the complementarity of DM searches in final states with top quarks with searches in other final states in the framework of various simplified models of DM. A reinterpretation of a DM search with top quarks in the context of an effective field theory description of scalar dark energy is also discussed. Finally, we give an outlook on the potential of DM searches with top quarks in LHC Run 3, at the high-luminosity LHC, and possible future colliders. In this context, we highlight new benchmark models that could be probed by existing and future searches as well as those that predict still-uncovered signatures of anomalous top-quark production and decays at the LHC. DarkSide-20k is a 50 t dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber currently under construction in Hall-C of LNGS. DarkSide-20k is projected to lead the search for WIMP like dark matter, probing down to WIMP-nucleon cross sections of 10−48 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 0.1 TeV. In order to achieve this goal DarkSide-20k employs novel techniques and technologies including: the use of underground argon depleted in the radioisotope 39Ar; a neutron veto integrated into the TPC mechanical structure; large-area cryogenic SiPM array photodetectors. These bespoke SiPMs, assembled into photodetector modules, instrument both the veto and TPC detectors. The design and ongoing production of these photodetector modules will be reported. The concentration of 222Rn in the air has been measured in the 700 m-deep Yangyang underground laboratory between October 2004 and May 2022. The average concentrations (spreads) in two experimental areas, called A6 and A5, were measured to be 53.4 Bq/m3 (13.9 Bq/m3) and 33.5 Bq/m3 (7.9 Bq/m3), respectively. The lower value in the A5 area reflects the presence of better ventilation. The radon concentrations sampled within the two A5 experimental rooms’ air are found to be correlated to the local tunnel temperature outside of the rooms, with correlation coefficients r = 0.22 and r = 0.70. Therefore, the radon concentrations display a seasonal variation, because the local temperature driven by the overground season influences air ventilation in the experimental areas. A sinusoidal function with a period of 1 year was used to fit the radon concentration data of both underground areas finding a maximum amplitude on August, 31 ± 6 days.

In this work, we calculate the spin structure functions for spin-dependent elastic and inelastic WIMP scattering off 119 Sn and 121 Sb. Estimates for detection rates are also given. 119 Sn and 121 Sb are amenable to nuclear structure calculations using the nuclear shell model (NSM). With the possible exception of 201 Hg, they are the only such nuclei still unexplored theoretically for their potential of inelastic WIMP scattering to a very low excited state. The present calculations were conducted using a state-of-the-art WIMP–nucleus scattering formalism, and the available effective NSM two-body interactions describe the spectroscopic properties of these nuclei reasonably well. Structure functions were found to be high for both nuclei in the case of elastic scattering. Elastic scattering dominated at the zero momentum transfer limit. Detection rate calculations indicated that inelastic scattering was relevant for both nuclei, even surpassing elastic rates for some recoil energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LUX (Large Underground Xenon) is a dark matter direct detection experiment deployed at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, SD, operating a 370 kg dual-phase xenon TPC. Results of the first WIMP search run were presented in late 2013, for the analysis of 85.3 live-days with a fiducial volume of 118 kg, taken during the period of April to August 2013. The experiment exhibited a sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering with a minimum upper limit on the cross section of 7.6×10-46cm2 at a WIMP mass of 33 GeV/c2, becoming the world's leading WIMP search result, in conflict with several previous claimed hints of discovery.

We present the status and prospects of the LUX experiment, which employs approximately 300 kg of two-phase xenon to search for WIMP dark matter interactions. The LUX detector was commissioned at the surface laboratory of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, SD, between December 2011 and February 2012 and the detector has been operating underground since January, 2013. These proceedings review the results of the commissioning run as well as the status of underground data-taking through the summer of 2013.

We present weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) search results performed using two approaches of effective field theory from the China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX), based on the data from both CDEX-1B and CDEX-10 stages. In the nonrelativistic effective field theory approach, both time-integrated and annual modulation analyses were used to set new limits for the coupling of WIMP-nucleon effective operators at 90% confidence level (C.L.) and improve over the current bounds in the low mχregion. In the chiral effective field theory approach, data from CDEX-10 were used to set an upper limit on WIMP-pion coupling at 90% C.L. We perform the first consistent calculation of elastic-scattering and inelastic-scattering structure functions for spin-dependent WIMP-nucleus scattering off 183W in a microscopic nuclear-theory framework. The nuclear structure calculations are performed in the microscopic interacting boson-fermion model (IBFM-2). Our results show that while 183W is very insensitive to spin-dependent elastic scattering, the structure function for inelastic scattering is quite sizable at small momentum transfers. Moreover, to our knowledge 183W provides the first studied case where inelastic scattering can compete with elastic scattering as the primary detection signal.

We present the results of the three-month above-ground commissioning run of the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment at the Sanford Underground Research Facility located in Lead, South Dakota, USA. LUX is a 370 kg liquid xenon detector that will search for cold dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). The commissioning run, conducted with the detector immersed in a water tank, validated the integration of the various sub-systems in preparation for the underground deployment. Using the data collected, we report excellent light collection properties, achieving 8.4 photoelectrons per keV for 662 keV electron recoils without an applied electric field, measured in the center of the WIMP target. We also find good energy and position resolution in relatively high-energy interactions from a variety of internal and external sources. Finally, we have used the commissioning data to tune the optical properties of our simulation and report updated sensitivity projections for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Differentiation between mitis group streptococci (MGS) bacteria in routine laboratory tests has become important for obtaining accurate epidemiological information on the characteristics of MGS and understanding their clinical significance. The most reliable method of MGS species identification is multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) with seven house-keeping genes; however, because this method is time-consuming, it is deemed unsuitable for use in most clinical laboratories. In this study, we established a scheme for identifying 12 species of MGS (S. pneumoniae, S. pseudopneumoniae, S. mitis, S. oralis, S. peroris, S. infantis, S. australis, S. parasanguinis, S. sinensis, S. sanguinis, S. gordonii, and S. cristatus) using the MinION nanopore sequencer (Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Oxford, UK) with the taxonomic aligner “What's in My Pot?” (WIMP; Oxford Nanopore's cloud-based analysis platform) and Kraken2 pipeline with the custom database adjusted for MGS species identification. The identities of the species in reference genomes (n = 514), clinical isolates (n = 31), and reference strains (n = 4) were confirmed via MLSA. The nanopore simulation reads were generated from reference genomes, and the optimal cut-off values for MGS species identification were determined. For 31 clinical isolates (S. pneumoniae = 8, S. mitis = 17 and S. oralis = 6) and 4 reference strains (S. pneumoniae = 1, S. mitis = 1, S. oralis = 1, and S. pseudopneumoniae = 1), a sequence library was constructed via a Rapid Barcoding Sequencing Kit for multiplex and real-time MinION sequencing. The optimal cut-off values for the identification of MGS species for analysis by WIMP and Kraken2 pipeline were determined. The workflow using Kraken2 pipeline with a custom database identified all 12 species of MGS, and WIMP identified 8 MGS bacteria except S. infantis, S. australis, S. peroris, and S. sinensis. The results obtained by MinION with WIMP and Kraken2 pipeline were consistent with the MGS species identified by MLSA analysis. The practical advantage of whole genome analysis using the MinION nanopore sequencer is that it can aid in MGS surveillance. We concluded that MinION sequencing with the taxonomic aligner enables accurate MGS species identification and could contribute to further epidemiological surveys.

Several of the many proposed Dark Matter candidate particles, already investigated with lower exposure and a higher software energy threshold, are further analyzed including the first DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 data release, with an exposure of 1.13 t-yr and a lower software energy threshold (1 keV). The cumulative exposure above 2 keV considering also DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 results is now 2.46 t-yr. The analysis permits to constrain the parameters' space of the considered candidates restricting their values - with respect to previous analyses - thanks to the increase of the exposure and to the lower energy threshold. A recently proposed dark matter WIMP (weakly interacting massive particle) has only second-order couplings to gauge bosons and itself. As a result, it has small annihilation, scattering, and creation cross-sections, and is consequently consistent with all current experiments and the observed abundance of dark matter. These cross-sections are, however, still sufficiently large to enable detection in experiments that are planned for the near future, and definitive identification in experiments proposed on a longer time scale. The (multi-channel) cross-section for annihilation is consistent with thermal production and freeze-out in the early universe, and with current evidence for dark matter annihilation in analyses of the observations of gamma rays by Fermi-LAT and antiprotons by AMS-02, as well as the constraints from Planck and Fermi-LAT. The cross-section for direct detection via collision with xenon nuclei is estimated to be slightly below 10−47 cm2, which should be attainable by LZ and Xenon nT and well within the reach of Darwin. The cross-section for collider detection via vector boson fusion is estimated to be ∼1 fb, and may be ultimately attainable by the high-luminosity LHC; definitive collider identification will probably require the more powerful facilities now being proposed.

For the last 10 years, the search for dark matter (DM) was carried out taking into account the fact that the DM particles are WIMPs (Weakly Interacted Massive Particles) which were introduced in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. Many experiments such as XENON1T, DarkSide, CRESST, etc. set the constraints on the WIMP-nucleon elastic interaction cross sections for different assumed WIMP masses. Methods for detecting WIMPs could play a special role, allowing one to determine the directions of the tracks of recoil nuclei and, therefore, to determine the preferred direction of the WIMP flux. In this work, we analyze the capabilities of such direct detection experiments through analyzing the lengths and directions of the tracks of recoil nuclei. Taking into account the existing experimental constraints, we conclude that the optimal target would be a lower density target containing nuclei of the CNO group, for example, liquid propane.

Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

Astronomical and cosmological observations support the existence of invisible matter that can only be detected through its gravitational effects, thus making it very difficult to study. Dark matter makes up about 27% of the known universe. As a matter of fact, one of the main goals of the physics program of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider of the CERN laboratory is the search of new particles that can explain dark matter. This review discusses both experimental and theoretical aspects of searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle candidates for dark matter at the LHC. An updated overview of the various experimental search channels performed by the ATLAS experiment is presented in order to pinpoint complementarity among different types of LHC searches and the interplay between the LHC and direct and indirect dark matter searches.

LZ is a second-generation Dark Matter experiment to conduct searches for weakly interacting massive particles. It is expected that the detector will reach a sensitivity for spin-independent elastic WIMP-nucleon cross-section of 1. 6 × 1 0 − 48 cm 2 at a mass of 40 GeV/c 2 in 1000 days of operation. Aside from Dark Matter particle interactions, the detector will also be sensitive to solar and supernova neutrinos as well as neutrinoless double beta decay from 136Xe. Background sources such as 222Rn and 85Kr must be significantly suppressed. This will be assured by radioactive screening of detector components and purification of xenon. Abstract Assuming for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) a Maxwellian velocity distribution in the Galaxy we explore in a systematic way the relative sensitivity of an extensive set of existing and projected Dark Matter (DM) direct detection experiments to each of the 14 couplings that parameterize the most general non-relativistic (NR) effective Hamiltonian allowed by Galilean invariance for a contact interaction driving the elastic scattering off nuclei of WIMPs of spin 1/2. We perform our analysis in terms of two free parameters: the WIMP mass m χ and the ratio between the WIMP-neutron and the WIMP-proton couplings cn / cp. We include the modified signal spectral shape due to non–standard interactions when it is needed in the determination of the bound, such as in the case of background subtraction or of the application of the optimal–interval method. For each coupling, in the m χ – cn / cp plane we provide contour plots of the most stringent 90% C.L. bound on the WIMP–nucleon cross section and show the experiment providing it. We also introduce NRDD_constraints, a simple interpolating code written in Python that allows to obtain the numerical value of the bound as a function of the WIMP mass m χ and of the coupling ratio cn / cp for each NR coupling. We find that 9 experiments out of the 14 present Dark Matter searches considered in our analysis provide the most stringent bound on some of the effective couplings for a given choice of (m χ , cn / cp): this is evidence of the complementarity of different target nuclei and/or different combinations of count-rates and energy thresholds when the search of DM is extended to a wide range of possible interactions. Abstract Scintillation crystals are commonly used for direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are suitable candidates for a particle dark matter. It is well known that the scintillation light yields are different for electron recoil and nuclear recoil. To calibrate the energies of WIMP-induced nuclear recoil signals, the quenching factor (QF) needs to be measured, which is the light yield ratio of the nuclear recoil to electron recoil. Measurements of the QFs for Na and I recoils in a small (2 cm × 2 cm × 1.5 cm) NaI(Tl) crystal are performed with 2.43-MeV mono-energetic neutrons generated by deuteron-deuteron fusion. Depending on the scattering angle of the neutrons, the energies of the recoiled ions vary in the range of 9–152 keV for Na and 19–75 keV for I. The QFs of Na are measured at 9 points with values in the range of 10–23% while those of I are measured at 4 points with values in the range of 4–6%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract SABRE (Sodium-iodide with Active Background REjection) is a direct dark matter search experiment based on an array of radio-pure NaI(Tl) crystals surrounded by a liquid scintillator veto. Twin SABRE experiments in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres will differentiate a dark matter signal from seasonal and local effects. The experiment is currently in a Proof-of-Principle (PoP) phase, whose goal is to demonstrate that the background rate is low enough to carry out an independent search for a dark matter signal, with sufficient sensitivity to confirm or refute the DAMA result during the following full-scale experimental phase. The impact of background radiation from the detector materials and the experimental site needs to be carefully investigated, including both intrinsic and cosmogenically activated radioactivity. Based on the best knowledge of the most relevant sources of background, we have performed a detailed Monte Carlo study evaluating the expected background in the dark matter search spectral region. The simulation model described in this paper guides the design of the full-scale experiment and will be fundamental for the interpretation of the measured background and hence for the extraction of a possible dark matter signal. The EDELWEISS collaboration is performing a direct search for WIMP dark matter using an array of up to twenty-four 820-890 g cryogenic germanium detectors equipped with a full charge and thermal signal readout. The experiment is located in the ultra-low-radioactivity background environment of the Modane underground laboratory, in the French-Italian Fréjus tunnel. We present the analysis of data obtained in extended data taking periods. WIMP limits, background rejection factors and measurements of cosmogenic activation are used to assess the performance of the third generation of EDELWEISS detectors in view of the search for WIMPs in the mass range from 1 to 20GeV/c2. A search for muon neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilations in the Sun is performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2012. In order to obtain the best possible sensitivities to dark matter signals, an optimisation of the event selection criteria is performed taking into account the background of atmospheric muons, atmospheric neutrinos and the energy spectra of the expected neutrino signals. No significant excess over the background is observed and 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino flux, the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections are derived for WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeV to 5 TeV for the annihilation channels WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W− and τ+τ−.
