Drawing on a unique survey of US workers with information about their employers' policies on pay discussions and whether workers engage in such talk with their coworkers, we provide the most comprehensive investigation into pay talk in workplaces to date. Unlike existing treatments, we focus on core organizational and relational factors that influence whether workers talk about pay. We theorize pay talk as a challenge to managerial discretion, and we hypothesize that organizational attributes related to pay-setting influence workers' willingness to discuss wages and salaries with colleagues. Managers, in turn, combat such challenges to their discretion by instituting pay secrecy rules. Particular relational factors within organizations are related to workers' violations of these rules. Findings indicate that the likelihood of pay discussions varies by workplace pay secrecy rules, managerial relations within organizations, and, in certain model specifications, sector and career turning points. Among status characteristics, only age is associated with discussing pay, with younger workers significantly more likely to talk about pay and to violate organizational rules meant to suppress pay discussions. The physical environment and location of brothels has been the focus of significant scholarship, although much of the literature focuses on the exterior of these businesses, leaving the interiors as yet under-examined. In New Zealand, there is a tension between decriminalization’s intention that brothels are treated similarly to other businesses, and the enduring stigma which sex work is subject to. To mitigate stigmatization and public condemnation of their businesses, brothel owners sometimes mimic the aesthetic and branding of more mainstream industries. Drawing on data from media texts and interviews with brothel owners and operators, this article examines how ‘mainstreaming’ narratives of respectability and acceptability are produced in the physical space of brothels, particularly their interior décor and design. Media texts were analysed using a critical discourse analysis approach, and interviews using a Foucauldian discourse analysis model, allowing for an understanding of the interplay between the discursive production of the brothel sector and the physical environment of these businesses. We suggest that brothels’ interiors are used as a way of indexing their class status, and explore how this may be used to communicate ideas about the workers employed there, particularly in relation to existing stigmas about prostitution. Understanding the spatial distribution of commercial sex activities (CSA) in urban environments is important in addressing the harms against sex workers and identifying sex trafficking operations. Guided by crime pattern theory, using Census data and New York Police Department (NYPD) prostitution-related arrests data (N = 29,075) from 2010 to 2019, this study examines the "hot spots" of CSA in New York City. Local Spatial Autocorrelation Analysis (LISA) identified distinctive spatial clusters of CSA, whereas logistic regression explained their significant congregation in immigrant and racial-ethnic enclaves. The heterogeneity of clusters by boroughs portrays the convergence of activity space of sex workers, patrons, and sex business opportunities reflecting the high-demand locations of CSA and human trafficking in NYC. The Spanish pay for sex scene has varied significantly in the last decades and most of the European literature has focused on the active role of women in human trafficking networks. However, there is scarce research examining the stories of women holding managerial positions in the pay for sex organizations in the South of Europe. By questioning the often binarized perceptions of the madams, this study aims to demonstrate the distinct roles that female decision-makers in the brothels can occupy. Data comes from two samples of business owners and traffickers. Research methods include qualitative techniques such as in-depth interviews, informal interviews and ethnographic observations. By combining the analyzed data with the previous literature, a Mediterranean model of madams is proposed. This article delves into the intricacies of managing illicit financial gains among Ivorian cyberfraudsters, shedding light on the findings of a field study conducted in Côte d'Ivoire by Swiss and Ivorian research teams. The study involved interviews with cybercriminals, law enforcement officials, and subject matter experts, in order to answer a specific question: What strategies do Ivorian cyberfraudsters use to manage and launder the criminal proceeds originating from romance scams and sextortion? The results explore the tactics employed by cyberfraudsters to obfuscate the illicit financial flows, their organizational structures, and the strategies they employ in managing and using their gains. It confirms certain elements from the scientific literature, in addition to introducing new insights for a better understanding of the processes of money laundering and the use of illicit funds. The article also unravels the multifaceted challenges encountered within the anti-money laundering framework in the context of cybercrime and raises avenues for further reflection and future work to enhance the fight against this scourge. Romance fraud uses the guise of a genuine relationship to deceive a victim into transferring often large amounts of money to an offender/s. Romance fraud has been in the top three categories of financial loss for Australian victims over the past decade, and this is a trend mirrored internationally. However, in recent years there has been a convergence of romance fraud and investment fraud approaches. Terms such as romance baiting, cryptorom and 'pig butchering' have all emerged to describe how offenders are evolving in their attempts to defraud victims through offering fake cryptocurrency investment opportunities, using a relationship as the mechanism. This article analyses this shift in romance fraud offending and its embracing of investment scheme opportunities. It highlights the underlying reasons for the success of this amalgamated approach and further demonstrates how it potentially distorts the reporting of fraud as well as prevention messaging targeting these incidents. We conduct a mixed-method, multi-study investigation using a role congruity theory framework to examine prospective employees' attitudes toward working for male- and female-led ventures. Results using data collected from business students, alumni, and executives in India reveal three insights: (1) prospective employees report similar evaluations for male- and female-led ventures under normal circumstances but evaluate female-led ventures more favorably than male-led ventures when the entrepreneur has a hierarchical workplace romance; (2) favorable attitudes toward female-led rather than male-led ventures when the entrepreneur is engaged in a hierarchical workplace romance are motivated by benevolent sexism; and (3) although respondents report a higher inclination to work for ventures without (vs with) a policy prohibiting workplace romance, the decline in willingness to work for an entrepreneur engaged in a workplace romance is higher for female- than male-led ventures. Edward Said writes that exile produces the towering myth of the modern nation. But the medieval legal history of sanctuary and exile offers an alternative model of provisional survival and transition. In the Middle English lay Emaré , sanctuary and exile are romanced; legal predicament is rendered as adventure and opened for examination. Incest and exile in a rudderless boat, marriage, childbirth, and a second exile eventually achieve a happy ending, but as with legal sanctuary, romance remedy is uncertain and provisional by design. What is the role of intimacy in sex? The two culturally dominant views on this matter both share the implicit assumption that sex is genuinely intimate only when connected to romance, and hence that sex and intimacy stand in a contingent relationship: it is possible to have good sex without it. Liberals embrace this possibility and affirm the value of casual sex, while conservatives attempt to safeguard intimacy by insisting on romantic exclusivity. I reject their shared assumption and argue for a necessary connection between intimacy and sex, in that sexual activity as such aims at a specific form of intimacy, irrespective of whether it takes place in casual encounters or romantic relationships, and the difference between good and bad sex consists in whether this end is attained. In his study, the author aims to discuss the singular genitive-dative case form of the inherited Latin noun nea 'snow'. The focus on this particular nominal form is justified because both the authors of the main Romanian or Romance dictionaries (whether explanatory or etymological) and linguists have either not considered it or have not provided acceptable interpretative solutions. While management and network scholars have long asked why some groups adapt to innovation more readily than others, such questions have been surprisingly absent in studies of new media production. We offer a network analytical framework which relates producers' informal networks to their capacity to adopt digital innovations. Through a network ethnography of 4264 romance writers, we find that established authors who reversed traditional advice patterns, by seeking advice from inexperienced newcomers rather than experienced peers, were more likely to adopt digital self-publishing. By linking the concept of relational labor to network structures, we demonstrate the value of "networking down" in a digitally disrupted cultural industry—a surprising finding in a business where networking up, to powerful actors, has seemed critical for success. We argue that strategic relational labor by established content creators facilitates adaptation to digital conditions and provides some measure of protection against precarity in a changing landscape. The present study examined employees' knowledge of their organization's workplace romance policy and its relationship with their workplace romance experiences and beliefs. It also investigated differences in employees' beliefs about workplace romance's reputational effects based on their workplace romance experiences. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of self-reported responses obtained from a sample of 642 adults working across industries in major US cities yielded several meaningful findings. Namely, employees in organizations with (versus without) a workplace romance policy were more likely to have participated in and observed a workplace romance, were more comfortable with future workplace romance participation, and were more likely to believe workplace romances were common and affected professional reputations. Employees with (versus without) workplace romance experience were also more likely to report positive reputational effects of hierarchical workplace romances for both male and female executives. Ciacci & Sviatschi's 'The Effect of Adult Entertainment Establishments on Sex Crime: Evidence from New York City,' published in The Economic Journal, concluded that opening new adult entertainment businesses reduces sex crimes, with the most compelling finding that '[strip clubs, gentleman's clubs, and escort services] decrease sex crime by 13% per police precinct one week after the opening.' We contend that the study's conclusions speak beyond the data, which cannot support these findings because they do not measure the necessary variables. The study uses the date a business is registered with New York State as a proxy for its opening date, but the actual date of opening comes weeks or months later, after requirements such as inspections, licensure, and community board approval. The study then uses police Stop, Question and Frisk Reports as data about subsequent crimes. As reports created to memorialize forcible police stops based on less than probable cause, 94% of these reports document that the police had an unfounded belief in criminal activity, and the person stopped was innocent of any crime. In effect, what the study has done is measure changes in police encounters with innocent people in the week after an entity has filed the paperwork that will eventually allow it to open as a business. The study lacks construct validity, cannot reject the null hypothesis of its most important finding, and its methods fall short of the rigor necessary to permit replication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research paper aims to provide a detail about the factor of commercial sexual harassment of women and children in Pakistan. The extent, prevalence, and implications of various forms of harassment against women and children engaged in beggary and sex business are recorded and analysed through this research. The study examines the causes and effects of trafficking against women and children. The study encourages as many systematic national assessments of the situation of violence against women and children as possible, including incidence, legal processes, child protection programs, estimates, violence in institutions, report assessment and data collection, as well as proven successful measures to protect children and deter violence against them. This study analyses the record of trafficking of women and children in Pakistan and recommend the suggestion and policy measures to control and eliminate harassment against women. This article discusses the role of anachronistic heroes in French comedy cinema and their relationship with work. The author examines three films: Mon Oncle, Populaire, and The Artist, and analyzes the characters Monsieur Hulot, Rose Pamphyle, and George Valentin. In Mon Oncle, Hulot's lack of gainful employment allows him to engage in positive social behavior and challenge the norms of capitalist society. In Populaire, Rose's pursuit of success in a male-dominated workplace is her form of after-work liberation. In The Artist, Valentin's unemployment leads to personal and financial ruin, highlighting the importance of work and collectivism. The purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a premarital counselling programme based on a systemic approach (SPMC). The Couple Relationship Scale (CRS) was used as a data collection tools. We randomly selected 24 participants from Turkish university students who scored low on the CRS subscales and agreed to participate in the study. We provided the experimental group with eight sessions of SPMC. The control group did not receive any intervention at all. We used quantitative data to determine the change in participants' couple relationships and qualitative data to determine their views about SPMC and their personal awareness. Analysis shows that SPMC had an effect on the experimental group in terms of the communication, romance-sexuality, conflict resolution, and acceptance of differences subscales scores. Follow-up indicated that the effect of the SPMC was still measurable 12 and 24 weeks after the completion of SPMC. The obtained results are discussed on a theoretical basis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is a review of a book edited by José Miguel Baños, María Dolores Jiménez López, María Isabel Jiménez Martínez, and Cristina Tur, which focuses on verb-nominal collocations (CVN) in classical and romance languages, especially in classical and post-classical Latin. The book addresses questions about the characteristics, comparisons, and linguistic principles of CVNs, as well as their evolution over time. Different metaphorical schemes in Latin that contribute to the choice of collocative verbs and the semantic values of CVNs expressing emotions are examined. The use of inchoative CVNs and the construction "gratiam inire" in different contexts are also analyzed. The study highlights the importance of studying collocations from a historical perspective and provides a positive evaluation of the book, although it mentions some oversights in editing and the possibility of reinforcing negative stereotypes about indigenous languages. This narrative research reports the experiences of five Mexican migrant workers considering the lifelong learning framework. Storytelling gave the participants the opportunity to share their life stories and workplace learning experiences. They were recruited via referral and snowball sampling from a Texas border town where there is an established migrant worker community. The research question guiding this study included: What can be learned from the workplace experiences of a group of Mexican male migrant workers? Data were collected through a series of conversational interviews and field notes. Through narrative analysis procedures, four major themes were identified: (1) resiliency and work ethics, (2) on the job learning, (3) struggles of migrant work, and (4) achievements and life satisfaction. The labour of migrant workers is vital to the growth of the U.S. economy and the stability of different workplace areas such as construction, agriculture, and factories. Migrant workers are extremely resilient and sacrifice a lifetime of work away from their families. They are a great example of what it means to be a selfdirected learner. The 14th century French romance Mélusine ou la Noble Histoire de Lusignan focuses on the peculiar founding mother of the house of Lusignan, who, due to a curse imposed by her fairy mother, is forced to transform in secrecy into a half-serpent, half-human figure every Saturday. The romance depicts her life after the curse and her ultimate exile after her husband discovers her in her hybrid form. As the lady flies away fully transformed into a giant serpent, however, marks of her enduring selfhood prevail: first, in a mark embedded in a windowsill in the shape of a foot and later, as a voiced emotional complaint, described as the voice of a woman. The serpent's emotive display confirms the existence of a stable, yet malleable core selfhood in the character that prevails through her embodied changes. In the face of ongoing interpersonal and structural violence towards sex workers in Canada, this research inquiry explores nine women and gender-diverse sex workers' experiences of place identity within their workplaces. Employing multisensory and arts-based ethnographic fieldwork, the co-researchers storied their embodied place-based experiences of identity. The research findings illuminate place-identity processes within sex workplaces, suggesting that the context, materiality, and multisensory atmospheres of the co-researchers' work environments were entwined with internal and external self-concepts. The co-researchers created personalized multisensory atmospheres in their workplaces through the use of colour, visual art, and music. Having workplaces that positively supported place identity fostered workplace comfort, control, and empowerment. Ultimately, this research suggests that place-identity processes in sex workplaces have the possibility to resist and shift sex work stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Differences in magazines content aimed specifically at women or men are a means to create and reproduce gender stereotypes. Novel computational tools allow to study differences in magazines content taking into account all available articles. In this study, we analyse the case of two Argentinian magazines published by the same publishing house over a decade (2008–2018), advertised by the publishing house as targeting women and men respectively. Using computational tools, we are able to analyse more than 24,000 articles, which would have been an impossible task using manual content analysis methodologies. With Topic Modelling techniques we identify the main themes discussed in the magazines and quantify their different frequency between magazines over time. Then, we performed a word-frequency analysis to validate this methodology and extend the analysis to other subjects. Our results show that topics such as Family, Business and Women as sex objects present an initial bias that tends to disappear over time. Conversely, in Fashion and Science topics, the initial differences are maintained. Also, we identify a considerable increase in the use of words associated with feminism since 2015 and specifically the word abortion in 2018. Pearl is a Middle English dream-poem in London, British Library, MS Cotton Nero A.x, of about 1400. It is attributed to the same author as the scriptural poems Patience and Cleanness and the romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight also found in this manuscript. The four texts provide abundant information on fourteenth-century social life, including religion, particularly for devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Analysis of Marian imagery in Pearl and its related poems thus tells us much on the attitudes to Christ's mother of a high-ranking provincial layman of about 1390, especially for her as 'Queen of Heaven' and 'Queen of Courtesy', the latter term denoting the values of court society. Such analysis also tends to confirm attribution on other grounds of the four poems to Sir John Stanley (d. 1414), a magnate and courtier who in the last thirty years of his life dominated the politics of the Lancashire- Cheshire region of north-west England. In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) arterial stiffness is associated with increased cardiovascular and total mortality. Little is known about determinants of arterial stiffness in clinical routine. Identification of potential determinants of arterial stiffness will help to address treatment targets for patients in the early state of T2DM. This is a cross-sectional analysis of arterial stiffness in 266 patients in the early stage of T2DM who did not have cardiovascular or renal complications. Parameters of arterial stiffness such as central systolic blood pressure (cSBP), central pulse pressure (cPP) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were measured with the SphygmoCor System (AtCor Medical). We investigated the influence of parameters of glucose metabolism, lipid status, body constitution, blood pressure (BP) and inflammation on the stiffness parameters using multivariate regression analysis. The study cohort consisted of male and female patients aged 61 ± 8 years with mean diabetes duration of 6.4 ± 5.1 years, mean HbA1c 7.1 ± 0.9%, mean cSBP 121 ± 12 mmHg, mean cPP 44 ± 10 mmHg and mean PWV 8.9 ± 1.8 m/s. Multiple regression analysis identified waist circumference (WC) (beta = 0.411, p = 0.026), LDL-cholesterol (beta = 0.106, p = 0.006), systolic office BP (beta = 0.936, p < 0.001) and diabetes duration (beta = 0.233, p = 0.043) as potential determinants of cSBP. cPP was determined by sex (beta = 0.330, p = 0.008), age (beta = 0.383, p < 0.001), systolic office BP (beta = 0.370, p < 0.001) and diabetes duration (beta = 0.231, p = 0.028) whereas for PWV the following determinants could be identified: age (beta = 0.405, p < 0.001), systolic office BP (beta = 0.421, p < 0.001) and diabetes duration (beta = 0.073, p = 0.038). In addition to the known parameters age, sex and systolic office BP serum LDL-cholesterol, WC and diabetes duration have been identified as determinants of arterial stiffness in patients with T2DM. Treatment of patients in the early stage of T2DM should focus on these clinical parameters to prevent progression of arterial stiffness and as a consequence reduce cardiovascular mortality. Purpose: This study aims to examine the impact of managers' inclusive leadership (IL) on knowledge-sharing (KS) behavior. Additionally, the authors consider the cross-level moderation effect of diversity in the biological sex of employees on the relationship between IL and employee KS behaviors. Design/methodology/approach: A two-wave questionnaire survey was conducted in a large Japanese company. The sample included 827 employees (254 men and 573 women) in 129 groups. The authors, then, conducted a cross-level analysis using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Findings: IL promotes two types of KS among employees: knowledge donating (KD) and knowledge collecting (KC). Additionally, the moderating effects of employee biological-sex diversity on the relationship between IL and KS varied according to the KS type. IL had a positive effect on KD only in groups with higher biological-sex diversity, and did not affect groups with lower biological-sex diversity. Biological-sex diversity did not moderate the relationship between IL and KC. Practical implications: This study has practical implications, especially for personnel departments with high diversity in employees' biological sex. Further, to improve employees' KS behaviors, it may be important to develop managers' IL skills. Originality/value: This is the first study that explores the relationship between IL and KS and the first to provide evidence of the moderating effect of diversity of employee's biological sex.
