WORKSHOPS (Facilities) , *TRADITIONAL knowledge , *CULTURAL property , *FOLK art , *TWENTY-first century - Abstract
This article intends to highlight and reconstruct the relationships between humans (harvesters, woodworkers and master artisans) and non-humans (raw materials, tools, places, products, etc.) in the Barniz de Pasto mopa-mopa tradition. These relationships were lost when the focus came to be primarily on the objects, as happens in most popular art forms worldwide. This text is organised in ethnographic overviews: the home workshops of masters of Barniz de Pasto; woodworker workshops; montañas-selvas (Andean rainforest highlands) and mopa-mopa harvesters; until we reach the objects. Unlike a conventional article, it does not end with firm and immutable conclusions. Our reflections from our eleven years (2013–2024) of accompanying men and women artisans and collectors, during the process of including the traditional knowledge and techniques associated with Barniz de Pasto mopa-mopa as Intangible Cultural Heritage (patrimonialización) and its safeguarding, are always open for discussion. Ecoscenography – a framework that reconfigures traditional processes and conceptualisations of designing for performance – offers a unique approach to bringing sustainability into theatre education. It challenges established linear modes of stage production (from idea to performance to disposal) and instead offers a circular, collaborative and place-orientated approach to conceiving, executing and circulating design ideas and products. Ecoscenography is aligned with the emerging concept of ecopedagogy, where more-than-human perspectives are central to teaching and learning practices. The framework's 'Three C's' – co-creation, celebration and circulation – provides a conceptual alternative to traditional design approaches where students are encouraged to consider the long-lasting impact of the work they conceive. A key enquiry of this paper is to interrogate how ecological thinking can be integrated into performance design pedagogies. Our argument draws on our previous writings of ecoscenography within design pedagogy to focus on an intensive workshop run by the authors at the 2023 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. In reflecting on the outcomes of the PQ workshop, we examine three different methods of embracing ecoscenography as a pedagogical framework within performance design training, and offer guidance to other educators looking to adopt eco-ethical approaches to their design training. Bazaars are considered essential components of a society's economy and significant features in the urban context of cities, which have emerged based on exchanging goods and meeting people's needs. Since the late Qajar period, amidst the rapid changes resulting from interaction with modernization, the form of Tabriz Grand Bazaar has undergone significant changes. The research aims to explain the contemporary transformations of marketplace form in the leather and shoe sectors. The objectives aim to elucidate the contemporary physical, functional, and sementic changes and propose strategies. The research method is qualitative, with a phenomenological approach. The results indicate that the Bazaar has lost some physical and sementic functions. Despite providing goods, it has failed to meet the public's demands because of eliminating production workshops by changing the productive function to service-oriented and the size and shape of spaces. The decline of religious activities is also one reason for the diminished sementic dimension. Regarding functional and physical aspects, some proposed solutions include preserving the authenticity of the spaces and utilizing suitable Functions with the dominant architectural style. Regarding sementic characteristics, suggestions include enhancing the sense of identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Since 2015, the Harvard Workshop on Research Methods in Supportive Oncology has trained early-career investigators in skills to develop rigorous studies in supportive oncology. This study examines workshop evaluations over time in the context of two factors: longitudinal participant feedback and a switch from in-person to virtual format during the COVID pandemic. Methods We examined post-workshop evaluations for participants who attended the workshop from 2015 to 2021. We qualitatively analyzed evaluation free text responses on ways in which the workshop could be improved and "other comments." Potential areas of improvement were categorized and frequencies were compiled longitudinally. Differences in participants' ratings of the workshop and demographics between in-person and virtual formats were investigated with t -tests and Chi-square tests, respectively. Results 286 participants attended the workshop over 8 years. Participant ratings of the workshop remained consistently high without substantial variation across all years. Three main themes emerged from the "other comments" item: (1) sense of community; (2) passion and empowerment; and (3) value of protected time. Participants appeared to identify fewer areas for improvement over time. There were no significant differences in participant ratings or demographics between the in-person and virtual formats. Signifinace of results While the workshop has experienced changes over time, participant evaluations varied little. The core content and structure might have the greatest influence on participants' experiences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WORKSHOPS (Facilities) , *VACATION homes , *WOODWORK ,ENGLISH-speaking countries ,DEVELOPED countries - Abstract
With more leisure time in the early to mid-twentieth century, more people in industrialized countries took up hobbies. One hobby—woodworking—became a favorite among men, especially homeowners. Beyond the familiar "do-it-yourselfers" there was an audience eager to learn about woodworking, and magazine publishers encouraged them to acquire new skills and home machinery. American publishers led the way, but workshop converts in English-speaking countries like Canada and the United Kingdom got the magazines and the message. The promise of creative leisure at home did not democratize the hobby. Monthly features and awards praising accomplished amateurs did not challenge social and economic norms but defined leisure success in conventional terms. Those with the income and space to maintain a hobby served as models for others whose circumstances were less ideal. Through its flagship publication, a machine manufacturer often acquiesced to the industrial-era pressures that hobbies sought to alleviate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article proposes that designers can enhance and extend the efforts for social change by transforming concepts of equity and justice into material, informative, and interactive experiences. The framework introduced here outlines six orientations for evoking future outcomes in the present moment. These orientations stem from a synthesis of techniques from disciplines with varying perspectives on world-building (rhetoric, theology, political science, and art). It identifies multiple ways to evoke the future in the present. Shared and iterated through a series of workshops in racial justice contexts, the framework offers a structure for advocates to recognize how they are already building better worlds and how they can translate future visions into near-term communication pieces that engage people in their mission. Imposter Syndrome is an experience that many new professionals struggle with in their day-to-day work lives. With a strong technological background, succeeding in a systems librarian role seems natural and easy. However, some responsibilities require more traditional skills associated with librarianship, like reference services, instructional support, and collection management. This column emphasizes the significance of professional development and the necessity in gaining a skill set that ensures a more well-rounded library professional and library employee. It offers a head-on approach to combating the feeling of inadequacy when changing one's career. Imposter syndrome does not have to be a long-term feeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community partnerships, based on 'the collaborative turn' in academic research, are an increasingly common framework through which 'bottom-up' histories, particularly of diverse and/or more marginalised communities, are being told. This article is about the 'doing' of this type of work. It focuses on the question: what lessons can be made visible when attempted cooperation fails to deliver the outcomes initially hoped for? Firstly, this article outlines the events and activities undertaken by the authors in exploring the ways that ephemera and other objects can be used to understand and transmit the historical experiences of communities often on the periphery of mainstream war commemoration. It will discuss the ways in which connections with these communities were built, with the aim of undertaking several creative writing workshops, leading to a co-produced publication of the participants' material. Secondly, as part of a broader acknowledgment of the possibility of failure and its benefits, it will explore why some of these creative workshop efforts failed to meet expectations and outline a series of recommendations for other historians and community-orientated projects to consider for future activities. When project sizes, integrated technology, and demand for sustainability increase, the construction industry faces requirements increase. Fulfilling the requirements is essential to the project's success, but fragmentation in the design and production phases makes requirements management time-consuming and complex. An approach to more systematic requirement management found in other industries is systems engineering. Through interviews and a workshop, this research project explores the applicability and benefits of a systems engineering approach in the construction industry. Several differences and similarities have been identified by comparing the systems. The results show that adopting a systems engineering approach in the construction industry can improve requirements management, understanding of the entire project scope and enhance overall project quality. Background: Pregnancy weight management interventions can improve maternal diet, physical activity, gestational weight gain, and postnatal weight retention. UK guidelines were published in 2010 but health professionals report multiple complex barriers to practice. GLOWING used social cognitive theory to address evidence-based barriers to midwives' implementation of weight management guidelines into routine practice. This paper reports the pilot trial outcomes relating to feasibility and acceptability of intervention delivery and trial procedures. Methods: GLOWING was a multi-centre parallel-group pilot cluster RCT comparing the delivery of a behaviour change intervention for midwives (delivered as training workshops) with usual practice. The clusters were four NHS Trusts in Northeast England, randomised to intervention or control arms. Blinding of allocation was not possible due to the nature of the intervention. We aimed to deliver the intervention to all eligible midwives in the intervention arm, in groups of 6 midwives per workshop, and to pilot questionnaire data collection for a future definitive trial. Intervention arm midwives' acceptability of GLOWING content and delivery was assessed using a mixed methods questionnaire, and pregnant women's acceptability of trial procedures by interviews. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and qualitative data thematically. Results: In intervention arm Trusts, 100% of eligible midwives (n = 67) were recruited to, and received, the intervention; however, not all workshops had the planned number of attendees (range 3–8). The consent rate amongst midwives randomised (n = 100) to complete questionnaires was 74% (n = 74) (95% CI 65%, 83%), and overall completion rate 89% (n = 66) (95% CI 82%, 96%). Follow-up response rate was 66% (n = 49) (95% CI 55%, 77%), with a marked difference between intervention (39%, n = 15) and control (94%, n = 34) groups potentially due to the volume of research activities. Overall, 64% (n = 47) (95% CI 53%, 75%) completed both baseline and follow-up questionnaires. Midwives viewed the intervention as acceptable and directly relevant to routine practice. The least popular components related to scripted role-plays. Pregnant women viewed the recruitment and trial processes to be acceptable. Conclusions: This rigorously conducted pilot study demonstrated feasibility intervention delivery and a high level of acceptability amongst participants. It has provided information required to refine the intervention and trial protocol, enhancing confidence that a definitive trial could be carried out. Shop & Drive is a vehicle service chain operating in the after-sales service sector, focusing on swift service and quick turnover of parts for car and motorcycle maintenance. However, one of their workshops located in Margonda faces significant challenges in optimizing its service area, affecting customer service efficiency. This study utilizes Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) methods to revamp the facility layout at Shop & Drive Margonda by processing field data using various techniques such as Activity Relationship Chart, Activity Relationship Diagram, Area Allocation Diagram, and material flow analysis to propose alternative layouts. The resulting layout adjustments significantly reduced non-operational areas in the workshop by 47.8%, reduced material flow movement for the car oil change service process and the car shock absorber replacement service process by 47.42% and 42.84% respectively and reduced the number of operators from 7 to 6 workers. There are many factors (ie age, noise level, shift, temperature) surrounding a person while working, causing difficulty in evaluating their productivity. This research aims to develop the relation between age, shift as well as noise level and worker productivity rate in an automotive machining shop and give company improvement suggestions on how to improve the worker productivity. Consequently, this research will help the company to maximize the productivity of their production line. Method used for this project was 2 x 3 factorial experimental design. The scope for the research was CNC Machining Shop, Mass-pro design with U shape conveyor, manual loading and unloading work type, cycle time at 2.0 min with constant temperature of 32.2 °C, Humidity at 56% and 300 Lux. The research found that, among all three factors, only age was significant to productivity. Based on this research, younger workers were more productive by 3.1% as compared to older workers. The 3.1% acted as reference for employers in the production line to rotate their men, by putting older manpower at lower demands production line and younger manpower at higher demands production line. Introduction: Early informal learning experiences are essential for sparking long-term interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In a prior study, we found more promising parent involvement outcomes when families of young children were provided with STEM family education events along with home STEM activity kits compared to providing workshops alone. This study was a conceptual replication using the same program—Teaching Together STEM—to deliver educational workshops plus home activity kits; however, we varied the delivery method by using virtual “funshops” to evaluate if parents perceived this modality as feasible and useful. Methods: Museum informal science educators introduced four units via virtual video chat sessions linked to 12 hands-on STEM activities that were mailed to families randomly assigned to the treatment group. Half of the families were assigned to a waitlist control group that received a portion of the virtual program after the posttest. Participants included 60 families with children aged 3 to 5 years from diverse linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Results: Our results indicate no significant group differences in the primary outcome of parents’ involvement in informal STEM but a small, positive effect size (ES = 0.18) that was similar in magnitude to the prior, in-person study. Although parents mostly perceived the remote delivery as convenient and the materials as engaging for their child, there were no significant program impacts on children’s general science interests (ES = −0.19). Discussion: Despite the convenience, parents reported time was a barrier to doing STEM activities at home. Parents with lower education levels were less likely to attend, suggesting virtual approaches are not sufficient for ensuring broad access to family engagement programs for populations underrepresented in STEM. A workshop, as a crowded place, is quite easy to cause serious casualties and economic losses once there is a fire. In this paper, Pathfinder software was used to simulate fire emergency evacuation in a workshop of a large factory with building structural symmetry. According to the simulation results, several obstacles to the evacuation were discovered and further analyzed. The results showed that the main factors affecting the evacuation were the width of exits, the distribution of occupants and the effective evacuation width of stairs. Among them, only changing the width of exits had little influence on shortening evacuation time. While changing the effective evacuation width of stairs could greatly relieve the evacuation pressure, every increase of 0.5 m in the width of the staircase could shorten the evacuation time by 30.0 s. Meanwhile, the larger the number of people in high-rise buildings, the longer the evacuation time was. Therefore, the means of restricting people from entering the high-rise buildings in batches could be used to prevent personnel from being evacuated in time when a fire incident occurs. With the rapid development of intelligent manufacturing, the application of virtual reality technology to the optimization of workshop facility layout has become one of the development trends in the manufacturing industry. Virtual reality technology has put forward engineering requirements for real-time solutions to the Workshop Facility Layout Optimization Problem (WFLOP). However, few scholars have researched such solutions. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is effective in solving combinatorial optimization problems in real time. The WFLOP is also a combinatorial optimization problem, making it possible for DRL to solve the WFLOP in real time. Therefore, this paper proposes the application of DRL to solve the dual-objective WFLOP. First, this paper constructs a dual-objective WFLOP mathematical model and proposes a novel dual-objective DRL framework. Then, the DRL framework decomposes the WFLOP dual-objective problem into multiple sub-problems and then models each sub-problem. In order to reduce computational workload, a neighborhood parameter transfer strategy is adopted. A chain rule is constructed for the appealed sub-problem, and an improved pointer network is used to solve the bi-objective WFLOP of the sub-problem. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is verified by using the facility layout of a chip production workshop as a case study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Early Iron Age site in Bánovce nad Bebravou, Biskupice-Keblov II (western Slovakia) was excavated by Archaeological Agency in 2014. During the excavation, there was found a feature connected with spinning and weaving - one of the important activities of Early Iron Age people, which penetrated to various spheres of life. This paper concerns short evaluation of the site with spatial analyses and reconstruction of the so-called workshop feature and its respective activities. The spatial analysis is evaluated by applying virtual space. The procedure is based on 3D reconstruction of individual features and creating of possible solutions in relation to original record. Part of this procedure was based on abstract visualization from archaeological record and second part used data from 3D photogrammetry. Results includes among visualization and space distribution of individual features, possible interior proportion and hut structure which could be used in this case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To encourage creativity through ideation mode in design thinking, we conducted three workshops dealing with regional challenges with 44 participants. The systematic feedback method applied to the workshops supports the multi-disciplinary participants to feedback during the ideation mode to diverge ideas from diverse perspectives. The method is composed of feedback cards and the process of using them. Two kinds of cards encourage communication within the team. The next three cards aim to diverge the viewpoints of the feedback systematically to support the team to imagine the possibility of the idea evolving from a bird's eye view. Through quantitative analysis of the survey, we identified the significant and positive correlations between acceptance of the team's idea and team creativity, the effectiveness of the method on team creativity, and the team's characteristics that firmly realized the effect of the method. By categorizing the free comments, we indicated the valid functions and improvements that need further research in the future. Identified valid functions were not only diverging minds and perspectives but encouraging communication and understanding of the team members leading to acceptance and creativity. To help industries in their sustainable and circular transition from internal combustion engine production to electric motor production, the deployment of (i) a sound environmental impact assessment methodology, such as life cycle analysis, coupled with (ii) Design for Re-X tools, such as circularity indicators, is instrumental. To demonstrate the industrial relevance and complementary of both approaches, two consecutive workshops are conducted with a major original equipment manufacturer of recreational boats and their associated engines. On this basis, two circularity indicator-based tools were used to quantify and enhance (i) the circularity potential of the electric outboard as a whole, and (ii) the circularity performance of the two most impactful components, based on the LCA results: the electric motor unit and the lithium-ion battery pack. In all, the practice sessions supported the generation of strategic and operational ideas to improve the circularity of the electric outboard. As the industrial participants found both frameworks easy to use and efficient, all the details and resources used to conduct, replicate, or adapt such workshops in other industrial contexts are shared.
