InGaN micro-LEDs (μ LEDs) with their potential high-volume applications have attracted substantial research interest in the past years. In comparison to other III–V semiconductors, InGaN exhibits a reduced susceptibility toward non-radiative surface recombination. However, efficiency degradation becomes more prominent as dimensions shrink to a few μ m or less. Due to the high surface-to-volume ratio of the miniaturized devices, the non-radiative recombination increases and reduces the internal quantum efficiency. While many groups focus on surface passivation to mitigate surface defects, the influence of crystallographic orientation of the μ LED sidewall on the efficiency remains unexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the impact of crystallographic orientation of the sidewalls on the emission properties of the μ LEDs. Hexagonal and elongated μ LEDs with dimensions as small as 3.5 μ m and sidewalls with crystallographically well-defined m- and a-planes were fabricated. Electrical and optical properties were investigated using photo- and electroluminescence. External quantum efficiency (EQE) is assessed based on well-known carrier recombination models. It can be shown that μ LED performance intrinsically depends on the crystallographic orientation of the sidewalls. Comparing hexagonal μ LED structures with a-plane and m-plane sidewalls, an increase in the EQE by 33 % was observed for structures with a-plane sidewalls, accompanied by reduction in the current density of the peak EQE by a nearly two orders of magnitude compared to structures with m-plane sidewalls. By analyzing the EQE characteristics at the μ LED center and near the sidewalls, the improvements can be directly attributed to the increased radiative recombination from sidewalls with a-plane orientation. Exposure to an acute stressor triggers a complex cascade of neurochemical events in the brain. However, deciphering their individual impact on stress-induced molecular changes remains a major challenge. Here, we combine RNA sequencing with selective pharmacological, chemogenetic, and optogenetic manipulations to isolate the contribution of the locus coeruleus-noradrenaline (LC-NA) system to the acute stress response in mice. We reveal that NA release during stress exposure regulates a large and reproducible set of genes in the dorsal and ventral hippocampus via β-adrenergic receptors. For a smaller subset of these genes, we show that NA release triggered by LC stimulation is sufficient to mimic the stress-induced transcriptional response. We observe these effects in both sexes, and independent of the pattern and frequency of LC activation. Using a retrograde optogenetic approach, we demonstrate that hippocampus-projecting LC neurons directly regulate hippocampal gene expression. Overall, a highly selective set of astrocyte-enriched genes emerges as key targets of LC-NA activation, most prominently several subunits of protein phosphatase 1 (Ppp1r3c, Ppp1r3d, Ppp1r3g) and type II iodothyronine deiodinase (Dio2). These results highlight the importance of astrocytic energy metabolism and thyroid hormone signaling in LC-mediated hippocampal function and offer new molecular targets for understanding how NA impacts brain function in health and disease.

The slow non-radiative surface recombination velocity of gallium nitride (GaN) in combination with its highly efficient radiative recombination makes this material ideally suited for microLEDs with dimensions as small as 1 µ m and even below, serving as the fundamental building block of micro-displays. However, due to their superior miniaturization potential and energy efficiency, GaN-based microLEDs have applications that extend well beyond display technology. Their capability to produce optical patterns with high resolution, which can be modulated at extremely high frequencies, makes them suitable for numerous other applications. We suggest exploiting these exciting properties for a new and potentially equally significant application: utilizing microLEDs in optical processing units for artificial intelligence workloads. In neuromorphic computing, relevant aspects of biological neural networks are emulated directly with either electronic circuits or photonic devices, avoiding the shortcomings of conventional digital computer technology for AI workloads, which generally require massively parallel information processing. GaN microLEDs are discussed here as a promising enabling technology for optical neuromorphic processing units. We see great potential to substantially decrease power consumption through massively parallel in-memory processing combined with efficient photon production and detection. A theoretical analysis of scalability and energy efficiency is provided. A macroscopic bench-top optical microLED demonstrator is presented, which experimentally proves the feasibility of our approach. Future potential and challenges associated with miniaturizing and scaling microLED-based optical processing units are discussed. Finally, we summarize the open research questions that require attention before fully functional and miniaturized optical neuromorphic processing units based on GaN microLEDs can be realized.

A Point-of-Care system for molecular diagnosis (PoC-MD) is described, combining GaN and CMOS chips. The device is a micro-system for fluorescence measurements, capable of analyzing both intensity and lifetime. It consists of a hybrid micro-structure based on a 32 × 32 matrix addressable GaN microLED array, with square LEDs of 50 µm edge length and 100 µm pitch, with an underneath wire bonded custom chip integrating their drivers and placed face-to-face to an array of 16 × 16 single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) CMOS. This approach replaces instrumentation based on lasers, bulky optical components, and discrete electronics with a full hybrid micro-system, enabling measurements on 32 × 32 spots. The reported system is suitable for long lifetime (>10 ns) fluorophores with a limit of detection ~1/4 µM. Proof-of-concept measurements of streptavidin conjugate Qdot™ 605 and Amino PEG Qdot™ 705 are demonstrated, along with the device ability to detect both fluorophores in the same measurement.

Obesity is a known risk factor for severe respiratory tract infections. In this prospective study, we assessed the impact of being obese or overweight on longitudinal SARS-CoV-2 humoral and cellular responses up to 18 months after infection. 274 patients provided blood samples at regular time intervals up to 18 months including obese (BMI ≥30, n=32), overweight (BMI 25-29.9, n=103) and normal body weight (BMI 18.5-24.9, n=134) SARS-CoV-2 patients. We determined SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific IgG, IgA, IgM levels by ELISA and neutralising antibody titres by neutralisation assay. RBD- and spike-specific memory B cells were investigated by ELISpot, spike- and non-spike-specific IFN-γ, IL-2 and IFN-γ/IL-2 secreting T cells by FluoroSpot and T cell receptor (TCR) sequencing was performed. Higher BMI correlated with increased COVID-19 severity. Humoral and cellular responses were stronger in overweight and obese patients than normal weight patients and associated with higher spike-specific IgG binding titres relative to neutralising antibody titres. Linear regression models demonstrated that BMI, age and COVID-19 severity correlated independently with higher SARS-CoV-2 immune responses. We found an increased proportion of unique SARS-CoV-2 specific T cell clonotypes after infection in overweight and obese patients. COVID-19 vaccination boosted humoral and cellular responses irrespective of BMI, although stronger immune boosting was observed in normal weight patients. Overall, our results highlight more severe disease and an over-reactivity of the immune system in overweight and obese patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection, underscoring the importance of recognizing overweight/obese individuals as a risk group for prioritisation for COVID-19 vaccination.

Laser lift-off (LLO) is an important step in the processing chain of nitride-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), as it enables the transfer of LEDs from the growth substrate to a more suitable carrier. A distinctive feature of LLO with ultrashort pulses is the ability to use either above- or below-bandgap radiation, since nonlinear absorption becomes relevant for ultrashort pulses. This study addresses the differences in the absorption scheme for below- and above-bandgap radiation and investigates the electrical and optical properties of InGaN/GaN LEDs before and after LLO with 347 and 520 nm laser light via current–voltage and power- as well as temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements. LLO could be successfully realized with both wavelengths. The threshold fluence required for LLO is about a factor of two larger for 520 nm compared to that for 347 nm. Furthermore, an increase in leakage current by several orders of magnitude and a significant decrease in efficiency with laser fluence are observed for below-bandgap radiation. In contrast, leakage current hardly increases and efficiency is less dependent on the laser fluence for samples lifted with 347 nm. This degradation is ascribed to the absorption of laser light in the active region, which facilitates a modification of the local defect landscape. The effect is more severe for below-bandgap radiation, as more laser light penetrates deep into the structure and reaches the active region. Ultimately, we show that LEDs lifted with ultrashort laser pulses can exhibit good quality, making ultrashort pulse LLO a viable alternative to conventional LLO with nanosecond pulses. BackgroundPreventing infection in healthcare workers (HCWs) is crucial for protecting healthcare systems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we investigated the seroepidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 in HCWs in Norway with low-transmission settings.MethodsFrom March 2020, we recruited HCWs at four medical centres. We determined infection by SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and serological testing and evaluated the association between infection and exposure variables, comparing our findings with global data in a meta-analysis. Anti-spike IgG antibodies were measured after infection and/or vaccination in a longitudinal cohort until June 2021.ResultsWe identified a prevalence of 10.5% (95% confidence interval, CI: 8.8–12.3) in 2020 and an incidence rate of 15.0 cases per 100 person-years (95% CI: 12.5–17.8) among 1,214 HCWs with 848 person-years of follow-up time. Following infection, HCWs (n = 63) mounted durable anti-spike IgG antibodies with a half-life of 4.3 months since their seropositivity. HCWs infected with SARS-CoV-2 in 2020 (n = 46) had higher anti-spike IgG titres than naive HCWs (n = 186) throughout the 5 months after vaccination with BNT162b2 and/or ChAdOx1-S COVID-19 vaccines in 2021. In a meta-analysis including 20 studies, the odds ratio (OR) for SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity was significantly higher with household contact (OR 12.6; 95% CI: 4.5–35.1) and occupational exposure (OR 2.2; 95% CI: 1.4–3.2).ConclusionWe found high and modest risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection with household and occupational exposure, respectively, in HCWs, suggesting the need to strengthen infection prevention strategies within households and medical centres. Infection generated long-lasting antibodies in most HCWs; therefore, we support delaying COVID-19 vaccination in primed HCWs, prioritising the non-infected high-risk HCWs amid vaccine shortage.

In diesem Entwicklungsbeitrag wird als eine Antwort auf die Komplexität, die mit der Kollaboration unterschiedlicher Akteure in Campus-Community-Partnerships (CCPs) einhergeht, die Entwicklung einer evidenzbasierten Methodologie für CCPs gefordert. Einordnend wird zunächst dargelegt, wie sich die Debatte um Transfer und Innovation über die letzten Jahre gewandelt hat und welche zentralen Transfer- bzw. Innovationsmodelle aktuell diskutiert werden. Daran anknüpfend werden CCPs als Vehikel für Transfer und Innovation beschrieben und dazugehörige Methoden vorgestellt. Exemplarisch werden in CCPs auftretende individuelle und strukturelle Herausforderungen herausgearbeitet. Davon ausgehend werden erste Forschungsdesiderate formuliert.

Acute stress can help individuals to respond to challenging events, although chronic stress leads to maladaptive changes. Here, the authors present a multi omic analysis profiling acute stress-induced changes in the mouse hippocampus, providing a resource for the scientific community.

Dopant‐selective electrochemical etching (ECE) of gallium nitride (GaN) results in well‐defined porous layers with tunable refractive index, which is extremely interesting for integrating photonic components into nitride technology. Herein, the impact of nitrogen implantation with and without subsequent rapid thermal annealing (RTA) on the porosification process of highly n‐doped GaN ([Si] 3 × 1019 cm−3) is investigated. Implantation is expected to compensate the donors of the n‐GaN layer to spatially suppress porosification during ECE. Optical transmission, electrochemical capacitance–voltage, and X‐Ray diffractometry of as‐grown and as‐implanted GaN suggest successful compensation of n‐dopants. Cross‐sectional scanning electron microscopy reveals the presence of mesopores (diameter 2–50 nm) after ECE of the as‐grown n‐GaN. In the case of implanted n‐GaN, it is found that ECE results in macropores (diameter > 50 nm), which can be suppressed by an intermediate RTA step. The implanted and annealed n‐GaN layers solely exhibit mesopores at the top and bottom, while the intermediate region remains unimpaired. Chronoamperometry and gravimetry provide additional insight and confirm the presence of macro‐ and mesopores in samples without and with RTA, respectively. The results demonstrate a successful implementation of etch‐resisting subsurface layers, which are required for 3D refractive index engineering in porous GaN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MicroLEDs, particularly when integrated with CMOS microelectronics, represent a significant advancement in nitride technology. While large-area, high-power LEDs for solid-state lighting have seen extensive optimization, microLEDs present unique fabrication and characterization challenges. Utilizing standard CMOS design and foundry services for silicon driver electronics, a new hybrid interconnect technology must be developed for chip–chip or wafer–wafer integration, necessitating much higher lateral resolution than current bonding technologies. Beyond display technology, microLED integration opens avenues for groundbreaking applications such as highly efficient nanosensors, miniaturized optical neuromorphic networks, and robust chip-based microscopy. This paper explores recent advancements in nitride/CMOS hybrid modules, providing an overview of current technologies and future possibilities in this dynamic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Color QR Codes are often generated to encode digital information, but one also could use colors or to allocate colors in a QR Code to act as a color calibration chart. In this dataset, we present several thousand QR Codes images generated with two different colorization algorithms (random and back-compatible) and several tuning variables in these color encoding. The QR Codes were also exposed to three different channel conditions (empty, augmentation and real-life). Also, we derive the SNR and BER computations for these QR Code in comparison with their black and white versions. Finally, we also show if ZBar, a commercial QR Code scanner, is able to read them.

Long-term complications after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are common in hospitalized patients, but the spectrum of symptoms in milder cases needs further investigation. We conducted a long-term follow-up in a prospective cohort study of 312 patients--247 home-isolated and 65 hospitalized--comprising 82% of total cases in Bergen during the first pandemic wave in Norway. At 6 months, 61% (189/312) of all patients had persistent symptoms, which were independently associated with severity of initial illness, increased convalescent antibody titers and pre-existing chronic lung disease. We found that 52% (32/61) of home-isolated young adults, aged 16-30 years, had symptoms at 6 months, including loss of taste and/or smell (28%, 17/61), fatigue (21%, 13/61), dyspnea (13%, 8/61), impaired concentration (13%, 8/61) and memory problems (11%, 7/61). Our findings that young, home-isolated adults with mild COVID-19 are at risk of long-lasting dyspnea and cognitive symptoms highlight the importance of infection control measures, such as vaccination.
