9. A Turn-On Quinazolinone-Based Fluorescence Probe for Selective Detection of Carbon Monoxide

Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic, hazardous gas that has a colorless and odorless nature. On the other hand, CO possesses some physiological roles as a signaling molecule that regulates neurotransmitters in addition to its hazardous effects. Because of the dual nature of CO, there is a need to develop a sensitive, selective, and rapid method for its detection. Herein, we designed and synthesized a turn-on fluorescence probe, 2-(2′-nitrophenyl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone (NPQ), for the detection of CO. NPQ provided a turn-on fluorescence response to CO and the fluorescence intensity at 500 nm was increased with increasing the concentration of CO. This fluorescence enhancement could be attributed to the conversion of the nitro group of NPQ to an amino group by the reducing ability of CO. The fluorescence assay for CO using NPQ as a reagent was confirmed to have a good linear relationship in the range of 1.0 to 50 µM with an excellent correlation coefficient (r) of 0.997 and good sensitivity down to a limit of detection at 0.73 µM (20 ppb) defined as mean blank+3SD. 27. A Note on the New Historical Documents of a Privateer Captain in the Early National Era

Abstract

This paper deals with newly found documents concerning Captain John Moulton (1762–1824), who sailed to many ports of the Atlantic world including Kingston, Havana, Liverpool, Bristol, Hamburg, Bremen, etc. The author owns 47 documents privately, which consist of 7 letters and many “ephemera” that are receipts, bills, promissory notes, etc. Though he was known in his local areas, Newburyport and Wenham, Massachusetts, the captain was not a “famous” person, so his documents were not collected by libraries nor archives. The 47 documents, however, tell kaleidoscopic aspects of the modern Atlantic world, where he experienced the trade of many commodities such as fabrics and his private events such as the tragic death of his loving child. This paper produces the printed text and interpretation of several documents and the whole list of 59 documents (their date, location, type, size, watermark, etc.) ever known concerning the captain including the 47 documents with their photos., p.242-245は都合により掲載しておりません

42. PCBs and PCDD/DFs in waste oil illegally dumped and neglected for more than 20 years.

Abstract

Quantification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated-dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in waste oil by high resolution gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS), and profiling of their congeners and homologues were described. Waste oil packed in drums which were estimated to have been exposed to the weather for more than 20 years were found by the illegal dumping patrol in 2006. PCBs were detected in all of 12 waste oil samples examined, with concentrations in the range of 0.0032-22 microg/g. The main pollution sources of the waste oil samples were presumed to be KC300, KC400 and/or KC500 by principal component analysis (PCA) and a chemical mass balance (CMB) method. The concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs (PCDD/DFs) in the illegally dumped waste oil ranged from 1.1 to 360 pg/g and 1.3 to 110 pg/g, respectively. The ratios of toxicity equivalency quantity (TEQ) of PCDDs and PCDFs to Co-PCBs were lower than those of Yusho rice oil. Consequently, it was determined that even after 20 years of exposure to the weather, no PCB denaturation occurred.
