Nutrients play a fundamental role as regulators of the activity of enzymes involved in liver metabolism. In the general population, the action of nutrients may be affected by gene polymorphisms. Therefore, individualization of a diet for individuals with fatty liver seems to be a fundamental step in nutritional strategies. In this study, we tested the nutrient-induced insulin output ratio (NIOR), which is used to identify the correlation between the variants of genes and insulin resistance. We enrolled 171 patients, Caucasian men (n = 104) and women (n = 67), diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). From the pool of genes sensitive to nutrient content, we selected genes characterized by a strong response to the NIOR. The polymorphisms included Adrenergic receptor (b3AR), Tumor necrosis factor (TNFα), Apolipoprotein C (Apo C III). Uncoupling Protein type I (UCP-1), Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ2 (PPAR-2) and Apolipoprotein E (APOEs). We performed three dietary interventions: a diet consistent with the results of genotyping (NIOR (+)); typical dietary recommendations for NAFLD (Cust (+)), and a diet opposite to the genotyping results (NIOR (-) and Cust (-)). We administered the diet for six months. The most beneficial changes were observed among fat-sensitive patients who were treated with the NIOR (+) diet. These changes included improvements in body mass and insulin sensitivity and normalization of blood lipids. In people sensitive to fat, the NIOR seems to be a useful tool for determining specific strategies for the treatment of NAFLD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine whether the use of supplements was associated with all-cause mortality among older people. The study included 643 people aged 75-80 (305 men and 338 women) from Warsaw and Olsztyn regions. The basic information about respondents and about vitamin and/or mineral supplement intake were collected in 1999, while data about deaths from all-causes were collected in Warsaw region till the end of December 2003 and in Olsztyn region till to end of August 2004. The Cox Proportional Hazard Regression Models were used to assess the all-cause mortality risk among supplements users and nonusers. The risk of all-cause mortality was 113% (95%CI: 15 - 294%) higher among men who used vitamin A supplements compared to those who not used this nutrient as supplements, for vitamin E the risk was 89% (95%CI: 3 - 248%) higher, for vitamin B1 - 102% (95%CI: 9 - 271%), vitamin B2 - 99% (95%CI: 8 - 268%), vitamin PP - 103% (95%CI: 12 - 268%), vitamin B6 - 103% (95%CI: 10 - 273%), iron - 105% (95%CI: 2 - 308%) and for zinc -160% (95%CI: 30 - 414%) higher. Among smoking men who used vitamin B6, PP, iron and zinc supplements compared to those who were smokers and not used these supplements there were a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality i.e. 118% (95%CI: 7 - 344%) and 106% (95%CI: 2 - 317%), 150% (95%CI: 14 - 448%) and 164% (95%CI: 122 - 472%), respectively. No such relationships were observed in older women. Further investigations are needed to explain the associations between supplement use and smoking in relation to mortality risk.

The study was conducted on 28 growing female Wistar rats, fed ad libitum for 84 days with four different diets: preferred poor, preferred rich, recommended and Labofeed B. The diet intake, feed efficiency, weight/length ratio, serum TG, TC and HDL-C levels were determined. Results were verified statistically using one-way ANOVA and the Scheffe test. The poor preferred diet with predominating fruit and vegetables, in comparison to the rich preferred diet, containing sweets, lowered the risk of obesity and atherosclerosis. The recommended diet, based on the model food ration for girls aged 13-15 years, lowered the risk of these diseases too.

The aim of the study was the analysis of the blood biochemical indices values depending on the nutrition model. The research was carried out in 1999 year among at random chosen 188 people 75-80 years old residing the neighbourhood of Olsztyn. The nutrients intake was assessed by means of the 24-hour recall method and, after having included loses, was compared with the recommended intake on the safe level. The blood biochemical indices were defined in the Central Analytical Laboratory of the City Hospital in Olsztyn according to the standard procedure. The analysis was assessed by Statistica v.6.0 program with the application of the factor and cluster analysis. Three nutrition models were separated: "low nutritive", "dairy" and "meat-vegetable-fruit". The comparison and distribution of the mean blood biochemical value was carried out using the variance analysis and the chi 2 test at p < or = 0.05. No differentiation in the levels of most blood biochemical indices depended on women and men nutrition model has been confirmed. Among 1-16% of women and 12-28% of men too low haematocrit and haemoglobin values were stated, among 34% of women and 23% of men--too low albumin values, and among 24% of women and 11% of men too high glucose values in the blood were found. About 32% of women and 35% of men showed too low HDL cholesterol ratio to total cholesterol content. Too low value of the vitamin B12 in the blood was revealed for 6% of women and 5% of men, and folic acid among 26% and 37%, for women and men, respectively. Regardless of realized nutrition model the significant percentage of elderly people has been characterized with the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes or anaemia.
