We present a new theoretical framework for using entropy to understand how outflows driven by supernovae are launched from disc galaxies: via continuous, buoyant acceleration through the circumgalactic medium (CGM). When young star clusters detonate supernovae in the interstellar medium (ISM) of a galaxy, they generate hot, diffuse bubbles that push on the surrounding ISM and evaporate that ISM into their interiors. As these bubbles reach the scale height of the ISM, they break out of the disc, rising into the CGM. Once these bubbles break out, if they have sufficiently high entropy, they will feel an upward acceleration, owing to a local buoyant force. This upward force will accelerate these bubbles, driving them to high galactocentric radii, keeping them in the CGM for $>\Gyr$, even if their initial velocity is much lower than the local escape velocity. We derive an equation of motion for these entropy-driven winds that connects the ISM properties, halo mass, and CGM profile of galaxies to the ultimate evolution of feedback-driven winds. We explore the parameter space of these equations, and show how this novel framework can explain both self-consistent simulations of star formation and galactic outflows as well as the new wealth of observations of CGM kinematics. We show that these entropy-driven winds can produce long wind recycling times, while still carrying a significant amount of mass. We present TREVR (Tree-based REVerse Ray Tracing), a general algorithm for computing the radiation field, including absorption, in astrophysical simulations. TREVR is designed to handle large numbers of sources and absorbers; it is based on a tree data structure and is thus suited to codes that use trees for their gravity or hydrodynamics solvers (e.g. Adaptive Mesh Refinement). It achieves computational speed while maintaining a specified accuracy via controlled lowering of the resolution of both sources and rays from each source. TREVR computes the radiation field in order ${N\log N_{source}}$ time without absorption and order ${N \log N_{source} \log{N}}$ time with absorption. These scalings arise from merging sources of radiation according to an opening angle criterion and walking the tree structure to trace a ray to a depth that gives the chosen accuracy for absorption. The absorption-depth refinement criterion is unique to TREVR. We present a new method to study the characteristic scales of collapse and fragmentation in galactic disks. Clump formation is seeded in simulations via controlled perturbations with a specified wavelength and velocity. These are applied to otherwise quiet gas disks ranging from analogues of present day spirals to gas-rich, high-redshift galaxies. The results are compared to linear theory, turbulently perturbed disks and observations. The results reflect the expectations of linear, non-axisymmetric theory with a finite window for growth into a bound clump. We identify two new modes of clump formation: rotation-driven fission and fragmentation of tidal tails, though both are expected to rarely contribute to clump formation in observed disks. We find that bound clumps are generally much smaller than the so-called Toomre mass. The preferred scale for fragmentation increases with the disk gas mass but cannot produce bound objects larger than $\sim10^9$ M$_{\odot}$. The most likely bound clump mass increases from $3\times10^6$ in low mass disks up to $5\times10^8$ M$_{\odot}$. We conclude that observed massive stellar and gaseous clumps on 1 kpc scales at high redshift are most likely aggregates of many initially distinct bound clumps., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

The evolution of galaxies is governed by equations with chaotic solutions: gravity and compressible hydrodynamics. While this micro-scale chaos and stochasticity has been well studied, it is poorly understood how it couples to macro-scale properties examined in simulations of galaxy formation. In this paper, we show how perturbations introduced by floating-point roundoff, random number generators, and seemingly trivial differences in algorithmic behaviour can produce non-trivial differences in star formation histories, circumgalactic medium (CGM) properties, and the distribution of stellar mass. We examine the importance of stochasticity due to discreteness noise, variations in merger timings and how self-regulation moderates the effects of this stochasticity. We show that chaotic variations in stellar mass can grow until halted by feedback-driven self-regulation or gas exhaustion. We also find that galaxy mergers are critical points from which large (as much as a factor of 2) variations in quantities such as the galaxy stellar mass can grow. These variations can grow and persist for more than a Gyr before regressing towards the mean. These results show that detailed comparisons of simulations require serious consideration of the magnitude of effects compared to run-to-run chaotic variation, and may significantly complicate interpreting the impact of different physical models. Understanding the results of simulations requires us to understand that the process of simulation is not a mapping of an infinitesimal point in configuration space to another, final infinitesimal point. Recent analysis \citep{McGaugh2016} of the SPARC galaxy sample found a surprisingly tight relation between the radial acceleration inferred from the rotation curves, and the acceleration due to the baryonic components of the disc. It has been suggested that this relation may be evidence for new physics, beyond $\Lambda CDM$. In this letter we show that 32 galaxies from the MUGS2 match the SPARC acceleration relation. These cosmological simulations of star forming, rotationally supported discs were simulated with a {\sc WMAP3} $\Lambda CDM$ cosmology, and match the SPARC acceleration relation with less scatter than the observational data. We review the recently published results from the CBI's first season of observations. Angular power spectra of the CMB were obtained from deep integrations of 3 single fields covering a total of 3 deg^2 and 3 shallower surveys of overlapping (mosaiced) fields covering a total of 40 deg^2. The observations show a damping of the anisotropies at high-l as expected from the standard scenarios of recombination. We derive cosmological parameters from the CBI measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular power spectrum. Our results provide an independent confirmation of the standard $\Omega_{\rm tot}=1$ $\Lambda$CDM model within the adiabatic, inflationary paradigm. Above $\ell=2000$ the observations show evidence of power in excess of that expected in the standard models. We discuss the nature of the possible high-l excess in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum observed by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI). We probe the angular structure of the excess in the CBI deep fields and investigate whether it could be due to the scattering of CMB photons by hot electrons within clusters, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect. We estimate the density fluctuation parameters for amplitude, sigma_8, and shape, Gamma, from CMB primary anisotropy data and other cosmological data. We use the results of two separate hydrodynamical codes for Lambda-CDM cosmologies, consistent with the allowed sigma_8 and Gamma values, to quantify the expected contribution from the SZ effect to the bandpowers of the CBI experiment and pass simulated SZ effect maps through our CBI analysis pipeline. The result is very sensitive to the value of sigma_8, and is roughly consistent with the observed power if sigma_8 ~ 1. We conclude that the CBI anomaly could be a result of the SZ effect for the class of Lambda-CDM concordance models if sigma_8 is in the upper range of values allowed by current CMB and Large Scale Structure (LSS) data., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal; 17 pages including 12 color figures. v2 matches accepted version. We have simulated the formation of an X-ray cluster in a cold dark matter universe using 12 different codes. The codes span the range of numerical techniques and implementations currently in use, including SPH and grid methods with fixed, deformable or multilevel meshes. The goal of this comparison is to assess the reliability of cosmological gas dynamical simulations of clusters in the simplest astrophysically relevant case, that in which the gas is assumed to be non-radiative. We compare images of the cluster at different epochs, global properties such as mass, temperature and X-ray luminosity, and radial profiles of various dynamical and thermodynamical quantities. On the whole, the agreement among the various simulations is gratifying although a number of discrepancies exist. Agreement is best for properties of the dark matter and worst for the total X-ray luminosity. Even in this case, simulations that adequately resolve the core radius of the gas distribution predict total X-ray luminosities that agree to within a factor of two. Other quantities are reproduced to much higher accuracy. For example, the temperature and gas mass fraction within the virial radius agree to about 10%, and the ratio of specific kinetic to thermal energies of the gas agree to about 5%. Various factors contribute to the spread in calculated cluster properties, including differences in the internal timing of the simulations. Our understanding of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest has received a great boost with the advent of the Keck Telescope and large 3D hydrodynamical simulations. We present new simulations using the SPH technique with a P^3MG (Particle-Particle Particle-MultiGrid) non-periodic gravity solver. Our method employs a high resolution (1 kpc) inner volume, essential for capturing the complex gas physics, a larger low resolution volume, essential for correct larger scale tidal fields and a self-consistently applied, uniform tidal field to model the influence of ultra long waves. We include a photoionizing UV flux and relevant atomic cooling processes. We use constrained field realisations to probe a selection of environments and construct a statistical sample representative of the wider universe. We generate artificial Lyman-$\alpha$ spectra and fit Voigt profiles. We examine the importance of (1) the photoionizing flux level and history, (2) tidal environment and (3) differing cosmologies, including CDM and CDM+{$\Lambda$}.
