Most academic scholars of the Muslim Brotherhood and like-minded Islamist organisations seem to agree that these groups have come to accept the nation state and the rules of the democratic game over the past few decades. At the same time, several scholars have shown in their work that reforms and developments among Islamists with regard to the state and democracy have not been accompanied by similar trends on religious minority rights and especially women’s rights. The long-held Islamist ideal of an Islamic state in which Islam provides the identity of the state remains difficult to square with full and equal citizenship for non-Muslims. Similarly, Islamists have been willing to make concessions with regard to women’s rights by reinterpreting Islamic tradition, but this has not moved as far as their revisionism with regard to the state and democracy. What is holding them back? The objective of this special issue is to begin to answer this question through various case studies, all of which focus on gaining greater insight into (the development of) views on the rights of religious minorities and women among non-violent Islamists since the Islamic revival in the Middle East and North Africa in the 1960s.

This research focuses on the role and impact of Islamic discourses in the Armenian-Azerbaijani Conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. As an ethnoterritorial interstate dispute between Christian Armenians and Muslim Azerbaijanis, the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict is an intriguing case study from the perspective of instrumentalization of Islamic discourses. This research, thus, attempts to explore whether and how Islamic rhetoric has evolved since the 1980s, when the Conflict erupted upon the rubbles of the godless Soviet Union, until the most recent war of 2020. While the peculiarities of Azerbaijani Islam are thoroughly discussed in this research to demonstrate how they relate to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a particular emphasis is put on illustrating the Islamic discourses surrounding the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War of 2020. Furthermore, this thesis draws on important Islamic concepts like Islamic Solidarity and Ummah to analyze how Islam ‘mattered’ in this ongoing ethno-territorial conflict. Using discourse and media analyses as well as historical approaches, this research investigates the ways Islam entered the Conflict and gradually became more involved in it, reaching its ‘Islamic peak’ in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh war of 2020. As for theoretical contributions, this research attempts to look at the contemporary Azerbaijani politics from a ‘post-secular’ light, thus challenging the discourse that post-secular perspectives are only applicable to modern Western societies. Moreover, I critically reflect on the notion of Azerbaijanis’ orinetalization within the Nagorno- Karabakh Conflict, adding to the existing theory on this intriguing discourse.

Binnen het salafisme bestaat de discussie of stemmen in een democratie toegestaan is. De geleerden die hierover van mening verschillen staan normaal gesproken qua opvattingen dichtbij elkaar. In dit onderzoek worden de verschillende variaties van de oordelen onderzocht en de argumentaties voor deze oordelen worden geanalyseerd. In het geval van de geleerden die verkiezingsdeelname toestaan is er vaak sprake van specifieke voorwaarden, maar ook deze verschillen onderling. Met een beschrijving van het salafisme in de religiewetenschap als basis wordt een analyse gemaakt van de oordelen en meningen van verschillende bekende salafistische geleerden uit het einde van de twintigste eeuw. De voor- en tegenstanders worden met elkaar vergeleken en daarna wordt gekeken hoe deze oordelen vandaag de dag toegepast worden op islamitische websites.

Na de Juni-oorlog van 1967 ontstond in de Arabische landen een uniek genre van literatuur dat probeerde via sociale zelfkritiek de oorzaken van het verlies aan te kaarten. Over de effecten van de oorlog is een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid wetenschappelijk onderzoek te vinden, maar de hoeveelheid onderzoek die zich specifiek richt op dit genre van literatuur is zeer beperkt. Hierom wordt met deze bachelorscriptie onderzoek gedaan naar dit genre van literatuur door de zelfkritiek-werken van drie schrijvers, Sadiq al-`Azm, Constantin Zuraiq, en Salah al-Din al-Munajjid met elkaar te vergelijken. Er is voor hun werken gekozen omdat zij alle drie een ander ideologische perspectief op het verlies bieden, en omdat zij prominente stemmen zijn binnen dit debat. In het eerste hoofdstuk wordt uitgelegd in wat voor context zij hun boeken schreven, vervolgens is de inhoud van die boeken op individueel niveau geanalyseerd, en tenslotte zijn een aantal collectieve eigenschappen van hun werken geïdentificeerd om een vollediger beeld te verschaffen van het genre waarin zij schreven. Uiteindelijk zal gevonden worden dat hun visies op de problematiek die het verlies veroorzaakte ver uiteenlopen, maar dat er een aantal gebieden te identificeren zijn waarop zij overeenstemming vinden, namelijk: hun kritiek op het ontwijken van verantwoordelijkheid, de noodzakelijkheid van het inhalen van de wetenschappelijke achterstand, het streven naar een hervorming van de ‘Arabische persoonlijkheid,’ en de bereidheid te leren van de vijand.

De scriptie bestaat uit twee delen: een beschrijving van de secundaire literatuur over martelaarschap en een analyse van de literaire representatie van martelaarschap. In het eerste deel wordt beschreven hoe het concept martelaarschap zich heeft ontwikkeld van een breed, polysemantisch begrip tot een nauw gedefinieerd begrip van militair martelaarschap. In het tweede deel worden er vier recent verschenen romans geanalyseerd over mensen die hun land hebben verlaten om naar IS-gebied te reizen: Rachid Benzines 'Nour, waarom zag ik het niet aankomen?' (2016), Mahir Guvens 'Broer' (2017), 'Just Another Jihadi Jane' van Tabish Khair (2016) en Kamila Shamsies 'Huis in brand' (2017). De analyse laat zien dat de literaire representatie van martelaarschap zich aansluit bij het militante discours zoals geformuleerd in deel één. Dit is opvallend aangezien de islamistische ideologie van de Islamitische Staat radicaal wordt afgewezen door de protagonisten.

This study analyses the role of religion in the provision of humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees by faith-based organizations (FBO’s) in Lebanon. Due to the fragile balance of powers in this sectarian state and other factors weakening it, the state is unable to provide humanitarian aid to refugees. This leaves NGO’s to fill that vacuum. Resembling the sectarian social landscape of Lebanon, many NGO’s working in the humanitarian aid sector have a religious identity. Given the vulnerability and dependence of refugees, various ethical dilemmas may arise when FBO’s combine providing humanitarian aid with proselytization. It is this dual purpose that the present study aims to analyse, by investigating the role that religion plays in four different FBO’s. Two of these have an Islamic identity and two a Christian one. For both religions, one organisation operates on a national level and the other on an international level. The role religion plays in the discourse of these organisations as well as the way the religious identity becomes visible in the projects and activities of these FBO’s will be analysed. It will be concluded that religion plays a significant role in the discourse of all four organisations, and takes a particularly prominent role in the activities and projects of the two nationally operating organisations.

This bachelor thesis aims to critically analyse the contributions of the Islamist women’s movement to women’s empowerment in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) within an intersectional framework. In order to understand the ideologies, motivations and intentions of Palestinian Islamist movements, one must examine their development within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By analysing how the conflict affects the social, economic and political factors which Palestinians are subject to, one might come to understand why the Islamist movement – particularly, Hamas – has gained such momentum over the past decades. Moreover, by taking the historical and political context into account when studying the evolution of the Islamist women’s movement in the oPt, the relevance of their contribution to women’s rights and gender discourse can be revealed. Since the struggle for women’s rights is usually viewed within a Western feminist frame, the achievements and interests of non-Western women are often overshadowed or underrepresented. Furthermore, the intersecting patriarchal and colonial power structures and the ongoing conflict have limited women activists’ abilities to advance their position within society. Lastly, this research aims to problematise the notion that Islamist women are tools in the hands of men that propagate their own oppression and lack the agency to make their own decisions.
