The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy (n,p) and (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of (p,n) reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the $^{58}$Fe(p,n)$^{58}$Co reaction in inverse kinematics with a 3.66$\pm$0.12 MeV/nucleon $^{58}$Fe beam (corresponding to 3.69$\pm$0.12 MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of 20.3$\pm$6.3 mb and served as a benchmark for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. This novel approach marks a significant advancement in experimental nuclear astrophysics, as it paves the way for studying astrophysically important (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei produced at FRIB.

Absolute cross sections measured using electromagnetic devices to separate and detect heavy recoiling ions need to be corrected for charge state fractions. Accurate prediction of charge state distributions using theoretical models is not always a possibility, especially in energy and mass regions where data is sparse. As such, it is often necessary to measure charge state fractions directly. In this paper we present a novel method of using a scintillation screen along with a CMOS camera to image the charge dispersed beam after a set of magnetic dipoles. A measurement of the charge state distribution for 88Sr passing through a natural carbon foil is performed. Using a Bayesian model to extract statistically meaningful uncertainties from these images, we find agreement between the new method and a more traditional method using Faraday cups. Future work is need to better understand systematic uncertainties. Our technique offers a viable method to measure charge state distributions.

B supergiants (BSGs) are evolved stars with effective temperatures between 10 to 30 kK and are important to understand massive star evolution. Located on the edge of the line-driven wind regime, the study of their atmospheres is helpful to understand phenomena such as the bi-stability jump. Key UV features of their spectra have so far not been reproduced by models for types later than B1. Here, we aim to remedy this situation via spectral analysis that accounts for wind clumping and X-rays. In addition, we investigate the evolutionary status of our sample stars based on the obtained stellar parameters. We determined parameters via quantitative spectroscopy using CMFGEN and PoWR codes. The models were compared to UV and optical data of four BSGs: HD206165, HD198478, HD53138, and HD164353. We also study the evolutionary status of our sample using GENEC and MESA tracks. When including clumping and X-rays, we find good agreements between synthetic and observed spectra for our sample stars. For the first time, we reproduced key lines in the UV. For that, we require a moderately clumped wind (f_infty > ~0.5). We also infer relative X-ray luminosities of ~10^-7.5 to 10^-8 -- lower than the typical ratio of 10^-7. Moreover, we find a possible mismatch between evolutionary and spectroscopic masses, which could be related to the mass-discrepancy problem present in other OB stars. Our results provide evidence that X-rays and clumping are needed to describe the winds of cool BSGs. However, their winds seem less structured than in earlier type stars. This aligns with observational X-rays and clumping constraints as well as recent hydrodynamical simulations. The BSGs' evolutionary status appears diverse: some objects are potentially post-red supergiants or merger products. A hybrid interface of solid state single-photon sources and atomic quantum memories is a long sought-after goal in photonic quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate deterministic storage and retrieval of photons from a semiconductor quantum dot in an atomic ensemble quantum memory at telecommunications wavelengths. We store single photons from an InAs quantum dot in a high-bandwidth rubidium vapour based quantum memory, with a total internal memory efficiency of $(12.9 \pm 0.4) \%$. The signal-to-noise ratio of the retrieved photons is $18.2\pm 0.6$, limited only by detector dark counts. This demonstration paves the way to quantum technologies that rely on distributed entanglement, and is especially suited for photonic quantum networks.

Triggered, indistinguishable, single photons play a central role in various quantum photonic implementations. Here, we realize a novel n$^+-$i$-$n$^{++}$ diode structure embedding semiconductor quantum dots: the gated device enables spectral tuning of the transitions and deterministic control of the observed charged states. Blinking-free single-photon emission and high two-photon indistinguishability is observed. The linewidth's temporal evolution is investigated for timescales spanning more than $6$ orders of magnitude, combining photon-correlation Fourier spectroscopy, high-resolution photoluminescence spectroscopy, and two-photon interference (visibility of $V_{\text{TPI, 2ns}}=\left(85.5\pm2.2\right){\%}$ and $V_{\text{TPI, 9ns}}=\left(78.3\pm3.0\right){\%}$). No spectral diffusion or decoherence on timescales above $\sim 9\,\text{ns}$ is observed for most of the dots, and the emitted photons' linewidth $\left(\left(420\pm30\right)\text{MHz}\right)$ deviates from the Fourier-transform limit only by a factor of $1.68$. Thus, for remote TPI experiments, visibilities above $74\%$ are anticipated. The presence of n-doping only signifies higher available carrier mobility, making the presented device highly attractive for future development of high-speed tunable, high-performance quantum light sources.

A narrow near-threshold proton-emitting resonance (Ex = 11.4 MeV, J$^{\pi}$ = 1/2$^{+}$ and $\Gamma_{p}$ = 4.4 keV) was directly observed in $^{11}$B via proton resonance scattering. This resonance was previously inferred in the $\beta$-delayed proton emission of the neutron halo nucleus $^{11}$Be. The good agreement between both experimental results serves as a ground to confirm the existence of such exotic decay and the particular behavior of weakly bound nuclei coupled to the continuum. $R$-matrix analysis shows a sizable partial decay width for both, proton and $\alpha$ emission channels.

The SEparator for CApture Reactions (SECAR) is a next-generation recoil separator system at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) designed for the direct measurement of capture reactions on unstable nuclei in inverse kinematics. To maximize the performance of this system, stringent requirements on the beam alignment to the central beam axis and on the ion-optical settings need to be achieved. These can be difficult to attain through manual tuning by human operators without potentially leaving the system in a sub-optimal and irreproducible state. In this work, we present the first development of online Bayesian optimization with a Gaussian process model to tune an ion beam through a nuclear astrophysics recoil separator. We show that this method achieves small incoming angular deviations (\textless 1 mrad) in an efficient and reproducible manner that is at least three times faster than standard hand-tuning. Additionally, we present a Bayesian method for experimental optimization of the ion optics, and show that it validates the nominal theoretical ion-optical settings of the device, and improves the mass separation by 32\% for some beams.

Interlayer van der Waals (vdW) coupling is generic in two-dimensional materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, which can induce very low-energy phonon modes. Using high-resolution inelastic hard x-ray scattering, we uncover the ultra-low energy phonon mode along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ (Bi2201). This mode is independent of temperature, while its intensity decreases with doping in accordance with an increasing c-axis lattice parameter. We compare the experimental results to first-principles density functional theory simulations and identify the observed mode as a van der Waals phonon, which arises from the shear motion of the adjacent Bi-O layers. This shows that Bi-based cuprate has similar vibrational properties as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, which can be exploited to engineer novel heterostructures.

Recent astronomical data have provided the primordial deuterium abundance with percent precision. As a result, Big Bang nucleosynthesis may provide a constraint on the universal baryon to photon ratio that is as precise as, but independent from, analyses of the cosmic microwave background. However, such a constraint requires that the nuclear reaction rates governing the production and destruction of primordial deuterium are sufficiently well known. Here, a new measurement of the $^2$H($p,\gamma$)$^3$He cross section is reported. This nuclear reaction dominates the error on the predicted Big Bang deuterium abundance. A proton beam of 400-1650keV beam energy was incident on solid titanium deuteride targets, and the emitted $\gamma$-rays were detected in two high-purity germanium detectors at angles of 55$^\circ$ and 90$^\circ$, respectively. The deuterium content of the targets has been obtained in situ by the $^2$H($^3$He,$p$)$^4$He reaction and offline using the Elastic Recoil Detection method. The astrophysical S-factor has been determined at center of mass energies between 265 and 1094 keV, addressing the uppermost part of the relevant energy range for Big Bang nucleosynthesis and complementary to ongoing work at lower energies. This work proposes a perception system for autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance specialized on unpaved roads and off-road environments. In this research, the authors have investigated the behavior of Deep Learning algorithms applied to semantic segmentation of off-road environments and unpaved roads under differents adverse conditions of visibility. Almost 12,000 images of different unpaved and off-road environments were collected and labeled. It was assembled an off-road proving ground exclusively for its development. The proposed dataset also contains many adverse situations such as rain, dust, and low light. To develop the system, we have used convolutional neural networks trained to segment obstacles and areas where the car can pass through. We developed a Configurable Modular Segmentation Network (CMSNet) framework to help create different architectures arrangements and test them on the proposed dataset. Besides, we also have ported some CMSNet configurations by removing and fusing many layers using TensorRT, C++, and CUDA to achieve embedded real-time inference and allow field tests. The main contributions of this work are: a new dataset for unpaved roads and off-roads environments containing many adverse conditions such as night, rain, and dust; a CMSNet framework; an investigation regarding the feasibility of applying deep learning to detect region where the vehicle can pass through when there is no clear boundary of the track; a study of how our proposed segmentation algorithms behave in different severity levels of visibility impairment; and an evaluation of field tests carried out with semantic segmentation architectures ported for real-time inference.

The 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction plays a vital role in various astrophysical scenarios. Its reaction rate must be accurately known in the present era of high precision astrophysics. The cross section of the reaction is often measured relative to a low energy resonance, the strength of which must therefore be determined precisely. The activation method, based on the measurement of 15O decay, has not been used in modern measurements of the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction. The aim of the present work is to provide strength data for two resonances in the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction using the activation method. The obtained values are largely independent from previous data measured by in-beam gamma-spectroscopy and are free from some of their systematic uncertainties. Solid state TiN targets were irradiated with a proton beam provided by the Tandetron accelerator of Atomki using a cyclic activation. The decay of the produced 15O isotopes was measured by detecting the 511 keV positron annihilation gamma-rays. The strength of the Ep = 278 keV resonance was measured to be 13.4 +- 0.8 meV while for the Ep = 1058 keV resonance the strength is 442 +- 27 meV. The obtained Ep = 278 keV resonance strength is in fair agreement with the values recommended by two recent works. On the other hand, the Ep = 1058 keV resonance strength is about 20% higher than the previous value. The discrepancy may be caused in part by a previously neglected finite target thickness correction. As only the low energy resonance is used as a normalization point for cross section measurements, the calculated astrophysical reaction rate of the 14N(p,gamma)15O reaction and therefore the astrophysical consequences are not changed by the present results., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The muon intensity and angular distribution in the shallow-underground laboratory Felsenkeller in Dresden, Germany have been studied using a portable muon detector based on the close cathode chamber design. Data has been taken at four positions in Felsenkeller tunnels VIII and IX, where a new 5 MV underground ion accelerator is being installed, and in addition at four positions in Felsenkeller tunnel IV, which hosts a low-radioactivity counting facility. At each of the eight positions studied, seven different orientations of the detector were used to compile a map of the upper hemisphere with 0.85{\deg} angular resolution. The muon intensity is found to be suppressed by a factor of 40 due to the 45 m thick rock overburden, corresponding to 140 meters water equivalent. The angular data are matched by two different simulations taking into account the known geodetic features of the terrain: First, simply by determining the cutoff energy using the projected slant depth in rock and the known muon energy spectrum, and second, in a Geant4 simulation propagating the muons through a column of rock equal to the known slant depth. The present data are instrumental for studying muon-induced effects at these depths and also in the planning of an active veto for accelerator-based underground nuclear astrophysics experiments., Comment: Submitted to Astroparticle Physics

We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger.
