Abstract

Precise hydrogen sorting from purge gas (H2/N2) and coke gas (H2/CH4), commonly carried out by cryogenic distillation, still suffers from low separation efficiency, high energy consumption, and considerable capital cost. Though still in its infancy, membrane technology offers a potential to achieve more efficient hydrogen purification. In this study, an optimum separation of hydrogen towards both methane and nitrogen via a kinetically‐driven mechanism is realized through preferred orientation control of a MOF membrane. Relying on the 0.3 nm‐sized window aligned vertical to the substrate, b‐oriented Ti‐MOF membrane exhibits ultra‐high hydrogen selectivity, surpassing the upper bound limit of separating H2/N2 and H2/CH4 gas pairs attained so far by inorganic membranes. This spectacular selectivity is combined with a high H2 permeability owing to the synergistic effect of the 1 nm‐sized MOF channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The role of nuclear quantum effects on the adsorption of molecular hydrogen in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been investigated on grounds of Grand-Canonical Quantized Liquid Density-Functional Theory (GC-QLDFT) calculations. For this purpose, we have carefully validated classical H2 -host interaction potentials that are obtained by fitting Born-Oppenheimer ab initio reference data. The hydrogen adsorption has first been assessed classically using Liquid Density-Functional Theory (LDFT) and the Grand-Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) methods. The results have been compared against the semi-classical treatment of quantum effects by applying the Feynman-Hibbs correction to the Born-Oppenheimer-derived potentials, and by explicit treatment within the Grand-Canonical Quantized Liquid Density-Functional Theory (GC-QLDFT). The results are compared with experimental data and indicate pronounced quantum and possibly many-particle effects. After validation calculations have been carried out for IRMOF-1 (MOF-5), GC-QLDFT is applied to study the adsorption of H2 in a series of MOFs, including IRMOF-4, -6, -8, -9, -10, -12, -14, -16, -18 and MOF-177. Finally, we discuss the evolution of the H2 quantum fluid with increasing pressure and lowering temperature.

Abstract

The transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) MoS2 and WS2 show remarkable electromechanical properties. Strain modifies the direct band gap into an indirect one, and substantial strain even induces an semiconductor-metal transition. Providing strain through mechanical contacts is difficult for TMD monolayers, but state-of-the-art for TMD nanotubes. We show using density-functional theory that similar electromechanical properties as in monolayer and bulk TMDs are found for large diameter TMD single- (SWNT) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs). The semiconductor-metal transition occurs at elongations of 16 %. We show that Raman spectroscopy is an excellent tool to determine the strain of the nanotubes and hence monitor the progress of that nanoelectromechanical experiment in situ. TMD MWNTs show twice the electric conductance compared to SWNTs, and each wall of the MWNTs contributes to the conductance proportional to its diameter., Comment: Submitted to Scientific Reports, 7 figures, 1 table, SI available

Abstract

A Ni-based pyrazolate MOF (NiBDP) is studied for SO2 adsorption under static conditions, demonstrating a high SO2 uptake of 8.48 mmol g-1 at 298 K and 1 bar while maintaining a high chemical stability. The influence of Ni(II) coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and coordinated water on the SO2 adsorption performance of this MOF is investigated by using a combination of experimental techniques, including FTIR and in situ DRIFTS measurements, along with Density Functional Theory calculations. The porefilling of the SO2 adsorbates within the material, at the molecular level, is further unravelled through grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations employing a newly DFT-derived accurate set of force field parameters. Abstract

The solution chemistry of aluminum is highly complex and various polyoxocations are known. Here we report on the facile synthesis of a cationic Al24 cluster that forms porous salts of composition [Al24(OH)56(CH3COO)12]X4, denoted CAU-55-X, with X=Cl−, Br−, I−, HSO4−. Three-dimensional electron diffraction was employed to determine the crystal structures. Various robust and mild synthesis routes for the chloride salt [Al24(OH)56(CH3COO)12]Cl4 in water were established resulting in high yields (>95 %, 215 g per batch) within minutes. Specific surface areas and H2O capacities with maximum values of up to 930 m2 g−1 and 430 mg g−1 are observed. The particle size of CAU-55-X can be tuned between 140 nm and 1250 nm, permitting its synthesis as stable dispersions or as highly crystalline powders. The positive surface charge of the particles, allow fast and effective adsorption of anionic dye molecules and adsorption of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Abstract

Several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) excel in harvesting water from the air or as heat pumps as they show a steep increase in water uptake at 10-30 % relative humidity (RH%). A precise understanding of which structural characteristics govern such behavior is lacking. Herein, CAU-10-H and CAU-10-CH3 are studied with -H, -CH3 corresponding to the functions grafted to the organic linker. CAU-10-H shows a steep water uptake approximate to 18 RH% of interest for water harvesting, yet the subtle replacement of -H by -CH3 in the organic linker drastically changes the water adsorption behavior to less steep water uptake at much higher humidity values. The materials' structural deformation and water ordering during adsorption with in situ sum-frequency generation, in situ X-ray diffraction, and molecular simulations are unraveled. In CAU-10-H, an energetically favorable water cluster is formed in the hydrophobic pore, tethered via H-bonds to the framework mu-OH groups, while for CAU-10-CH3, such a favorable cluster cannot form. By relating the findings to the features of water adsorption isotherms of a series of MOFs, it is concluded that favorable water adsorption occurs when sites of intermediate hydrophilicity are present in a hydrophobic structure, and the formation of energetically favorable water clusters is possible.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes care in low- and middle-income countries, such as Bangladesh, remains challenging due to limited resources. A person’s self-care ability, his or her adherence to medical advice and knowledge about the disease are central to diabetes management. Furthermore, undiagnosed, diabetic secondary complications may severely affect patient outcome. Here, we, therefore, examined the adherence, knowledge, and undetected retinopathy in adults with diabetes attending the outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational, monocenter study conducted at BIHS hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh from April to August 2017; 504 participants with type 2 diabetes; questionnaires on socio-demographic parameters, adherence to medical advice, knowledge about diabetes and medical history; anthropometrics, clinical examination, laboratory chemistry, and retinal photography (n=489). Result: Adherence to the prescribed drug therapy was 52%, to recommended diet 28% and to physical activity advice 42%. Of all study participants, only 29% had good knowledge about diabetes. Factors independently associated with good knowledge about diabetes were a higher level of education, a higher family income, a duration of diabetes of 10 years or more, and controlled fasting blood glucose. In screening, diabetic retinopathy was detected in 18.8% of the study participants. Conclusion: This study highlights possibilities for improvements of patient education, disease management and screening examinations at a diabetes care centre in Bangladesh, which are, at least in part, transferrable to other low- and middle-income countries.
