The photocatalytic generation of an NADH synthetic analogue, i.e. 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (1,4-BNAH), has been studied using the cobalt diimino–dioxime complexes and the BF2-bridged derivative as catalysts. 1,4-BNAH was produced in both aqueous and organic media at unprecedented turnover numbers with metal and organic photosensitizers, respectively.

Manganese complexes in +6 oxidation state are rare. Although a number of Mn(VI) nitrido complexes have been generated in solution via one-electron oxidation of the corresponding Mn(V) nitrido species, they are too unstable to isolate. Herein we report the isolation and the X-ray structure of a Mn(VI) nitrido complex, [MnVI(N)(TAML)]- (2), which was obtained by one-electron oxidation of [MnV(N)(TAML)]2- (1). 2 undergoes N atom transfer to PPh3 and styrenes to give Ph3P═NH and aziridines, respectively. A Hammett study for various p-substituted styrenes gives a V-shaped plot; this is rationalized by the ability of 2 to function as either an electrophile or a nucleophile. 2 also undergoes hydride transfer reactions with NADH analogues, such as 10-methyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (AcrH2) and 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH). A kinetic isotope effect of 7.3 was obtained when kinetic studies were carried out with AcrH2 and AcrD2. The reaction of 2 with NADH analogues results in the formation of [MnV(N)(TAML-H+)]- (3), which was characterized by ESI/MS, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography. These results indicate that this reaction occurs via an initial "separated CPET" (separated concerted proton-electron transfer) mechanism; that is, there is a concerted transfer of 1 e- + 1 H+ from AcrH2 (or BNAH) to 2, in which the electron is transferred to the MnVI center, while the proton is transferred to a carbonyl oxygen of TAML rather than to the nitrido ligand.

Room temperature aerobic oxidation of hydrocarbons is highly desirable and remains a great challenge. Here we report a series of highly electrophilic cobalt(III) alkylperoxo complexes, CoIII(qpy)OOR supported by a planar tetradentate quaterpyridine ligand that can directly abstract H atoms from hydrocarbons (R'H) at ambient conditions (CoIII(qpy)OOR + R'H → CoII(qpy) + R'• + ROOH). The resulting alkyl radical (R'•) reacts rapidly with O2 to form alkylperoxy radical (R'OO•), which is efficiently scavenged by CoII(qpy) to give CoIII(qpy)OOR' (CoII(qpy) + R'OO• → CoIII(qpy)OOR'). This unique reactivity enables CoIII(qpy)OOR to function as efficient catalysts for aerobic peroxidation of hydrocarbons (R'H + O2 → R'OOH) under 1 atm air and at room temperature.

The synthesis and X-ray structure of a new manganese(V) mesitylimido complex with a tetraamido macrocyclic ligand (TAML), [MnV (TAML)(N-Mes)]- (1), are reported. Compound 1 is oxidized by [(p-BrC6 H4 )3 N]+. [SbCl6 ]- and the resulting MnVI species readily undergoes H-atom transfer and nitrene transfer reactions.

It is highly desirable to discover molecular catalysts with controlled selectivity for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction to fuels. In the design of catalysts employing earth-abundant metals, progress has been made for CO production, but formate generation has been observed more rarely. Here, we report a binuclear Co complex bearing a bi-quaterpyridine ligand that can selectively reduce CO2 to HCOO− or CO under visible light irradiation. Selective formate production (maximum of 97%) was obtained with a turnover number of up to 821 in basic acetonitrile solution. Conversely, in the presence of a weak acid, CO2 reduction affords CO with high selectivity (maximum of 99%) and a maximum turnover number of 829. The catalytic process is controlled by the two Co atoms acting synergistically, and the selectivity can be steered towards the desired product by simply changing the acid co-substrate. Performing photocatalytic CO2 reduction in a selective fashion with molecular catalysts represents a considerable challenge. Here, a binuclear cobalt complex featuring a bi-quaterpyridine ligand is developed that can selectively afford either carbon monoxide or formate by selection of the reaction medium acidity.

The osmium(VI) nitrido complex [OsVI(N)(sap)(py)Cl] is a potential anti-cancer drug with promising in vitro antiproliferative activities toward a panel of cancer cell lines, including cisplatin-resistant cells (IC50 values of 2.8–13.8 μM). This drug targets DNA and changes its conformation via covalent binding and insertion. In vitro studies indicate that the drug induces HepG2 cells G2/M phase arrest, disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential and causes caspase-mediated apoptosis. Further in vivo studies using HepG2-bearing nude mice reveal that this drug not only shows good antitumor efficacy of inhibiting tumor growth, but also does not show the side effect of weight loss.

The reduction of metal nitride to ammonia is a key step in biological and chemical nitrogen fixation. We report herein the facile reduction of a ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex [(L)RuVI(N)(OH2)]+ (1, L = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-o-cyclohexyldiamine dianion) to [(L)RuIII(NH3)(OH2)]+ by l-cysteine (Cys), an ubiquitous biological reductant, in aqueous solution. At pH 1.0–5.3, the reaction has the following stoichiometry: [(L)RuVI(N)(OH2)]+ + 3HSCH2CH(NH3)CO2 → [(L)RuIII(NH3)(OH2)]+ + 1.5(SCH2CH(NH3)CO2)2. Kinetic studies show that at pH 1 the reaction consists of two phases, while at pH 5 there are three distinct phases. For all phases the rate law is rate = k2[1][Cys]. Studies on the effects of acidity indicate that both HSCH2CH(NH3+)CO2– and –SCH2CH(NH3+)CO2– are kinetically active species. At pH 1, the reaction is proposed to go through [(L)RuIV(NHSCH2CHNH3CO2H)(OH2)]2+ (2a), [(L)RuIII(NH2SCH2CHNH3CO2H)(OH2)]2+ (3), and [(L)RuIV(NH2)(OH2)]+ (4) intermediates. The search for a highly active nitrido complex that can transfer its nitrogen atom to inert organic molecules remains a challenge to chemists. In this regard, the use of solar energy to generate a reactive nitrido species is an appealing strategy to solve this problem. Here we report the design of a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido compound, [OsVI(N)(NO2-L)(CN)3]− (NO2-OsN) with emission quantum yield (Φ) and life time (τ) of 3.0% and 0.48 μs, respectively in dichloromethane solution. Upon irradiation with visible light, this complex readily activates the aliphatic C-H bonds of various hydrocarbons, including alkanes. The excited state of NO2-OsN can undergo ring-nitrogenation of arenes, including benzene. Photophysical and computational studies suggest that the excited state of NO2-OsN arises from O^N ligand to Os ≡ N charge transfer transitions, and as a result it possesses [Os = N•] nitridyl character and is highly electrophilic.

The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of S(IV) (SO3 (2-) +HSO3 (-) ) with a ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex, [(L)Ru(VI) (N)(OH2 )](+) (Ru(VI) N, L=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-o-cyclohexyldiamine dianion), in aqueous acidic solutions are reported. The kinetic results are consistent with parallel pathways involving oxidation of HSO3 (-) and SO3 (2-) by Ru(VI) N. A deuterium isotope effect of 4.7 is observed in the HSO3 (-) pathway. Based on experimental results and DFT calculations the proposed mechanism involves concerted N-S bond formation (partial N-atom transfer) between Ru(VI) N and HSO3 (-) and H(+) transfer from HSO3 (-) to a H2 O molecule.

The aerobic oxidation of the N-hydroxyguanidinum moiety of N-hydroxyarginine to NO is a key step in the biosynthesis of NO by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). So far, there is no chemical system that can efficiently carry out similar aerobic oxidation to give NO. We report here the synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of an osmium(III) N-hydroxyguanidine complex, mer-[Os(III){NH═C(NH2)(NHOH)}(L)(CN)3](-) (OsGOH, HL = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole), which to the best of our knowledge is the first example of a transition metal N-hydroxyguanidine complex. More significantly, this complex readily undergoes aerobic oxidation at ambient conditions to generate NO. The oxidation is pH-dependent; at pH 6.8, fac-[Os(NO)(L)(CN)3](-) is formed in which the NO produced is bound to the osmium center. On the other hand, at pH 12, aerobic oxidation of OsGOH results in the formation of the ureato complex [Os(III)(NHCONH2)(L)(CN)3](2-) and free NO. Mechanisms for this aerobic oxidation at different pH values are proposed.

The kinetics of water oxidation by K2 FeO4 has been reinvestigated by UV/Vis spectrophotometry from pH 7-9 in 0.2 m phosphate buffer. The rate of reaction was found to be second-order in both [FeO4 2- ] and [H+ ]. These results are consistent with a proposed mechanism in which the first step involves the initial equilibrium protonation of FeO4 2- to give FeO3 (OH)- , which then undergoes rate-limiting O-O bond formation. Analysis of the O2 isotopic composition for the reaction in H2 18 O suggests that the predominant pathway for water oxidation by ferrate is intramolecular O-O coupling. DFT calculations have also been performed, which support the proposed mechanism.

The study of manganese complexes as water-oxidation catalysts (WOCs) is of great interest because they can serve as models for the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II. In most of the reported Mn-based WOCs, manganese exists in the oxidation states III or IV, and the catalysts generally give low turnovers, especially with one-electron oxidants such as Ce(IV) . Now, a different class of Mn-based catalysts, namely manganese(V)-nitrido complexes, were explored. The complex [Mn(V) (N)(CN)4 ](2-) turned out to be an active homogeneous WOC using (NH4 )2 [Ce(NO3 )6 ] as the terminal oxidant, with a turnover number of higher than 180 and a maximum turnover frequency of 6 min(-1) . The study suggests that active WOCs may be constructed based on the Mn(V) (N) platform.

A cancer-cell selective bis(guanidine)-ruthenium(iii) complex induces apoptosis, whereas its amidine analogue effectively kills cancer cells through paraptosis pathways., Two novel series of (salen)ruthenium(iii) complexes bearing guanidine and amidine axial ligands were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for anticancer activity. In vitro cytotoxicity tests demonstrate that these complexes are cytotoxic against various cancer cell lines and the leading complexes have remarkable cancer-cell selectivity. A detailed study of the guanidine complex 7 and the amidine complex 13 reveals two distinguished modes of action. Complex 7 weakly binds to DNA and induces DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and typical apoptosis pathways in MCF-7 cells. In contrast, complex 13 induces paraptosis-like cell death hallmarked by massive vacuole formation, mitochondrial swelling, and ER stress, resulting in significant cytotoxicity against human breast cancer cells. Our results provide an extraordinary example of tuning the mechanism of action of (salen)ruthenium(iii) anticancer complexes by modifying the structure of the axial ligands.

The oxidation of various alkanes catalyzed by [Mn(V)(N)(CN)4](2-) using various terminal oxidants at room temperature has been investigated. Excellent yields of alcohols and ketones (>95%) are obtained using H2O2 as oxidant and CF3CH2OH as solvent. Good yields (>80%) are also obtained using (NH4)2[Ce(NO3)6] in CF3CH2OH/H2O. Kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) are determined by using an equimolar mixture of cyclohexane (c-C6H12) and cyclohexane-d12 (c-C6D12) as substrate. The KIEs are 3.1 ± 0.3 and 3.6 ± 0.2 for oxidation by H2O2 and Ce(IV), respectively. On the other hand, the rate constants for the formation of products using c-C6H12 or c-C6D12 as single substrate are the same. These results are consistent with initial rate-limiting formation of an active intermediate between [Mn(N)(CN)4](2-) and H2O2 or Ce(IV), followed by H-atom abstraction from cyclohexane by the active intermediate. When PhCH2C(CH3)2OOH (MPPH) is used as oxidant for the oxidation of c-C6H12, the major products are c-C6H11OH, c-C6H10O, and PhCH2C(CH3)2OH (MPPOH), suggesting heterolytic cleavage of MPPH to generate a Mn═O intermediate. In the reaction of H2O2 with [Mn(N)(CN)4](2-) in CF3CH2OH, a peak at m/z 628.1 was observed in the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, which is assigned to the solvated manganese nitrido oxo species, (PPh4)[Mn(N)(O)(CN)4](-)·CF3CH2OH. On the basis of the experimental results the proposed mechanism for catalytic alkane oxidation by [Mn(V)(N)(CN)4](2-)/ROOH involves initial rate-limiting O-atom transfer from ROOH to [Mn(N)(CN)4](2-) to generate a manganese(VII) nitrido oxo active species, [Mn(VII)(N)(O)(CN)4](2-), which then oxidizes alkanes (R'H) via a H-atom abstraction/O-rebound mechanism. The proposed mechanism is also supported by density functional theory calculations.

Experimental and computational studies suggest a mechanism that involves an initial electrophilic attack at the aromatic ring of hydroquinone by the nitrido ligand.

Proton-coupled electron-transfer reactions of phenols have received considerable attention because of their fundamental interest and their relevance to many biological processes. Here we describe a remarkable four-electron oxidation of phenols by a (salen)ruthenium(VI) complex in the presence of pyridine in CH3OH to afford (salen)ruthenium(II) p-benzoquinone imine complexes. Mechanistic studies indicate that this reaction occurs in two phases. The first phase is proposed to be a two-electron transfer process that involves electrophilic attack by Ru≡N at the phenol aromatic ring, followed by proton shift to generate a Ru(IV) p-hydroxyanilido intermediate. In the second phase the intermediate undergoes intramolecular two-electron transfer, followed by rapid deprotonation to give the Ru(II) p-benzoquinone imine product.

Kinetic and mechanistic studies on the intermolecular activation of strong C-H bonds of alkanes by a (salen)ruthenium(VI) nitride were performed. The initial, rate-limiting step, the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the alkane to Ru(VI)≡N, generates Ru(V)=NH and RC·HCH(2)R. The following steps involve N-rebound and desaturation.

Reaction of [Os(VI)(N)(L(1))(Cl)(OH(2))] (1) with CN(-) under various conditions affords (PPh(4))[Os(VI)(N)(L(1))(CN)(Cl)] (2), (PPh(4))(2)[Os(VI)(N)(L(2))(CN)(2)] (3), and a novel hydrogen cyanamido complex, (PPh(4))(2)[Os(III){N(H)CN}(L(3))(CN)(3)] (4). Compound 4 reacts readily with both electrophiles and nucleophiles. Protonation and methylation of 4 produce (PPh(4))[Os(III)(NCNH(2))(L(3))(CN)(3)] (5) and (PPh(4))[Os(III)(NCNMe(2))(L(3))(CN)(3)] (6), respectively. Nucleophilic addition of NH(3), ethylamine, and diethylamine readily occur at the C atom of the hydrogen cyanamide ligand of 4 to produce osmium guanidine complexes with the general formula [Os(III){N(H)C(NH(2))NR(1)R(2)}(L(3))(CN)(3)](-) , which have been isolated as PPh(4) salts (R(1) = R(2) = H (7); R(1) = H, R(2) = CH(2)CH(3) (8); R(1) = R(2) = CH(2)CH(3) (9)). The molecular structures of 1-5 and 7 and 8 have been determined by X-ray crystallography.

A series of tricyanoiron(III) complexes with the general formula mer-[FeIII(5-Xsap)(CN)3]2− (X = H, Me, MeO, Cl or Br, sapH2 = N-salicylidene-o-aminophenol) have been synthesized. These complexes were characterized by IR, ESI-MS, UV/Vis, elemental analysis and magnetic measurements. The structures of (PPh4)2[FeIII(sap)(CN)3] and (PPh4)2[FeIII(5-Mesap)(CN)3] have been determined by X-ray crystallography. These low-spin d 5 tricyanoiron(III) complexes are potential building blocks for the construction of molecule-based magnets.

The reaction of [Ru(VI)(N)(L)(MeOH)](PF(6)) [1; L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-o-cyclohexyldiamine dianion] with a stoichiometric amount of RSH in CH(3)CN gives the corresponding (salen)ruthenium(IV) sulfilamido species [Ru(IV){N(H)SR}(L)(NCCH(3))](PF(6)) (2a, R = (t)Bu; 2b, R = Ph). Metathesis of 2a with NaN(3) in methanol affords [Ru(IV){N(H)S(t)Bu}(L)(N(3))] (2c). 2a undergoes further reaction with 1 equiv of RSH to afford a (salen)ruthenium(III) sulfilamine species, [Ru(III){N(H)(2)S(t)Bu}(L)(NCCH(3))](PF(6)) (3). On the other hand, 2b reacts with 2 equiv of PhSH to give a (salen)ruthenium(III) ammine species [Ru(III)(NH(3))(L)(NCCH(3))](PF(6)) (4); this species can also be prepared by treatment of 1 with 3 equiv of PhSH. The X-ray structures of 2c and 4 have been determined. Kinetic studies of the reaction of 1 with excess RSH indicate the following schemes: 1 --2a --3 (R = (t)Bu), 1 --2b --4 (R = Ph). The conversion of 1 to 2 probably involves nucleophilic attack of RSH at the nitrido ligand, followed by a proton shift. The conversions of 2a to 3 and 2b to 4 are proposed to involve rate-limiting H-atom abstraction from RSH by 2a or 2b. 2a and 2b are also able to abstract H atoms from hydrocarbons with weak C-H bonds. These reactions occur with large deuterium isotope effects; the kinetic isotope effect values for the oxidation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene, 1,4-cyclohexadiene, and fluorene by 2a are 51, 56, and 11, respectively.

The oxidation of alkanes by various peroxides ((t)BuOOH, H2O2, PhCH2C(CH3)2OOH) is efficiently catalyzed by [Os(VI)(N)Cl4](-)/Lewis acid (FeCl3 or Sc(OTf)3) in CH2Cl2/CH3CO2H to give alcohols and ketones. Oxidations occur rapidly at ambient conditions, and excellent yields and turnover numbers of over 7500 and 1000 can be achieved in the oxidation of cyclohexane with (t)BuOOH and H2O2, respectively. In particular, this catalytic system can utilize PhCH2C(CH3)2OOH (MPPH) efficiently as the terminal oxidant; good yields of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (>70%) and MPPOH (>90%) are obtained in the oxidation of cyclohexane. This suggests that the mechanism does not involve alkoxy radicals derived from homolytic cleavage of MPPH but is consistent with heterolytic cleavage of MPPH to produce a metal-based active intermediate. The following evidence also shows that no free alkyl radicals are produced in the catalytic oxidation of alkanes: (1) The product yields and distributions are only slightly affected by the presence of O2. (2) Addition of BrCCl3 does not affect the yields of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone in the oxidation of cyclohexane. (3) A complete retention of stereochemistry occurs in the hydroxylation of cis- and trans-1,2-dimethylcyclohexane. The proposed mechanism involves initial O-atom transfer from ROOH to [Os(VI)(N)Cl4](-)/Lewis acid to generate [Os(VIII)(N)(O)Cl4](-)/Lewis acid, which then oxidizes alkanes via H-atom abstraction.

The proposed mechanism involves initial equilibrium formation of [Ru (VI)(N)(L (1))(py)] (+), which undergoes rapid N...N coupling to produce [(py)(L (1))Ru (III) N N-Ru (III)(L (1))(py)] (2+); this is followed by pyridine substituion to give the final product. This ligand-induced N...N coupling of Ru (VI)N is utilized in the preparation of a series of new ruthenium(III) salen complexes, [Ru (III)(L)(X) 2] (+/-) (L = salen ligand; X = H 2O, 1-MeIm, py, Me 2SO, PhNH 2, ( t )BuNH 2, Cl (-) or CN (-)). The structures of [Ru (III)(L (1))(NH 2Ph) 2](PF 6) ( 6), K[Ru (III)(L (1))(CN) 2] ( 9), [Ru (III)(L (2))(NCCH 3) 2][Au (I)(CN) 2] ( 11) (L (2) = N, N'-bis(salicylidene)- o-phenylenediamine dianion) and [N ( n )Bu 4][Ru (III)(L (3))Cl 2] ( 12) (L (3) = N, N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine dianion) have been determined by X-ray crystallography.

This review summarizes the kinetics and mechanisms of the oxidation of various inorganic and organic substrates by trans -dioxoruthenium(VI) complexes containing macrocyclic tertiary amine ligands during the period 1993–2006.

Kinetic and computational studies suggest that the reactions go through an initial ruthenium(IV) aziro intermediate, followed by addition of nucleophiles to give the (salen)ruthenium(III) imine complexes. These unprecedented reactions provide a new pathway for nitrogenation of alkynes based on a metal nitride.

Hydrogen-bridged dinuclear ruthenium carbene complexes supported by salen have been prepared and found to be active catalysts for the cyclopropanation of alkenes; electrochemical and theoretical studies suggest the existence of electronic communication between the Ru centers.

Nitrido complexes (M≡N) may be key intermediates in chemical and biological nitrogen fixation and serve as useful reagents for nitrogenation of organic compounds. Osmium(VI) nitrido complexes bearing 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (terpy), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), or hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate anion (Tp) ligands are highly electrophilic: they can react with a variety of nucleophiles to generate novel osmium(IV)/(V) complexes. This Account describes our recent results studying the reactivity of nitridocomplexes of ruthenium(VI), osmium(VI), and manganese(V) that bear Schiff bases and other simple anionic ligands. We demonstrate that these nitrido complexes exhibit rich chemical reactivity. They react with various nucleophiles, activate C-H bonds, undergo N···N coupling, catalyze the oxidation of organic compounds, and show anticancer activities. Ruthenium(VI) nitrido complexes bearing Schiff base ligands, such as [Ru(VI)(N)(salchda)(CH3OH)](+) (salchda = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)o-cyclohexyldiamine dianion), are highly electrophilic. This complex reacts readily at ambient conditions with a variety of nucleophiles at rates that are much faster than similar reactions using Os(VI)≡N. This complex also carries out unique reactions, including the direct aziridination of alkenes, C-H bond activation of alkanes and C-N bond cleavage of anilines. The addition of ligands such as pyridine can enhance the reactivity of [Ru(VI)(N)(salchda)(CH3OH)](+). Therefore researchers can tune the reactivity of Ru≡N by adding a ligand L trans to nitride: L-Ru≡N. Moreover, the addition of various nucleophiles (Nu) to Ru(VI)≡N initially generate the ruthenium(IV) imido species Ru(IV)-N(Nu), a new class of hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) reagents. Nucleophiles also readily add to coordinated Schiff base ligands in Os(VI)≡N and Ru(VI)≡N complexes. These additions are often stereospecific, suggesting that the nitrido ligand has a directing effect on the incoming nucleophile. M≡N is also a potential platform for the design of new oxidation catalysts. For example, [Os(VI)(N)Cl4](-) catalyzes the oxidation of alkanes by a variety of oxidants, and the addition of Lewis acids greatly accelerates these reactions. [Mn(V)(N)(CN)4]2(-) is another highly efficient oxidation catalyst, which facilitates the epoxidation of alkenes and the oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds using H2O2. Finally, M≡N can potentially bind to and exert various effects on biomolecules. For example, a number of Os(VI)≡N complexes exhibit novel anticancer properties, which may be related to their ability to bind to DNA or other biomolecules.

We report experimental and computational studies of the facile oxidative C-N bond cleavage of anilines by a (salen)ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex. We provide evidence that the initial step involves nucleophilic attack of aniline at the nitrido ligand of the ruthenium complex, which is followed by proton and electron transfer to afford a (salen)ruthenium(II) diazonium intermediate. This intermediate then undergoes unimolecular decomposition to generate benzene and N2.

cis-[Ru(2,9-Me(2)phen)(2)(OH(2))(2)](2+) reacts readily with chlorite at room temperature at pH 4.9 and 6.8. The ruthenium(II) complex can catalyze the disproportionation of chlorite to chlorate and chloride, the oxidation of chlorite to chlorine dioxide, as well as the oxidation of alcohols by chlorite.

MnO(4)(-) is activated by BF(3) to undergo intramolecular coupling of two oxo ligands to generate O(2). DFT calculations suggest that there should be a spin intercrossing between the singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces on going from the active intermediate [MnO(2)(OBF(3))(2)](-) to the O···O coupling transition state.
