The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph $G$ with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which $G \setminus E(C)$ is disconnected for every cycle $C$, admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

We present an absolute $^3$He polarimetry method based on thermal neutron transmission for a double-chambered cell. This method utilizes the fact that a $^3$He nucleus has a large absorption cross section and a spin dependence for thermal neutrons. The cell had a pumping chamber and a target chamber. Polarized $^3$He gas was produced in the pumping chamber by SEOP and then diffused into the target chamber. The $^3$He polarization in the target chamber was determined by comparing the neutron transmissions with the polarized and unpolarized targets. The measurement was performed at the RIKEN Accelerator-Driven Compact Neutron Source. The $^3$He polarization in the target chamber was determined with a statistical error of 1.8% and systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. This method can be used to obtain high-precision data of spin observables in few-nucleon scattering for the investigation of nuclear forces., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

In a honeycomb-lattice spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator {\alpha}-RuCl3, an ultrafast magnetization is induced by circularly polarized excitation below the Mott gap. Photo-carriers play an important role, which are generated by turning down the synergy of the on-site Coulomb interaction and the spin-orbit interaction realizing the insulator state. An ultrafast 6- fs measurement of photo-carrier dynamics and a quantum mechanical analysis clarify the mechanism, according to which the magnetization emerges from a coherent charge motion between different t2g orbitals (dyz-dxz-dxy) of Ru3+ ions. This ultrafast magnetization is weakened in the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase, which is opposite to the general tendency that the inverse Faraday effect is larger in AF compounds than in paramagnetic ones. This temperature dependence indicates that the interorbital charge motion is affected by pseudo-spin rotational symmetry breaking in the AF phase.

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $\rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$\rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $\Delta$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $\rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $\Delta$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$\rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

We prove a tight lower bound on the asymptotic performance ratio $\rho$ of the bounded space online $d$-hypercube bin packing problem, solving an open question raised in 2005. In the classic $d$-hypercube bin packing problem, we are given a sequence of $d$-dimensional hypercubes and we have an unlimited number of bins, each of which is a $d$-dimensional unit hypercube. The goal is to pack (orthogonally) the given hypercubes into the minimum possible number of bins, in such a way that no two hypercubes in the same bin overlap. The bounded space online $d$-hypercube bin packing problem is a variant of the $d$-hypercube bin packing problem, in which the hypercubes arrive online and each one must be packed in an open bin without the knowledge of the next hypercubes. Moreover, at each moment, only a constant number of open bins are allowed (whenever a new bin is used, it is considered open, and it remains so until it is considered closed, in which case, it is not allowed to accept new hypercubes). Epstein and van Stee [SIAM J. Comput. 35 (2005), no. 2, 431-448] showed that $\rho$ is $\Omega(\log d)$ and $O(d/\log d)$, and conjectured that it is $\Theta(\log d)$. We show that $\rho$ is in fact $\Theta(d/\log d)$. To obtain this result, we elaborate on some ideas presented by those authors, and go one step further showing how to obtain better (offline) packings of certain special instances for which one knows how many bins any bounded space algorithm has to use. Our main contribution establishes the existence of such packings, for large enough $d$, using probabilistic arguments. Such packings also lead to lower bounds for the prices of anarchy of the selfish $d$-hypercube bin packing game. We present a lower bound of $\Omega(d/\log d)$ for the pure price of anarchy of this game, and we also give a lower bound of $\Omega(\log d)$ for its strong price of anarchy.

It is a well-known fact that a cluster of nucleons can be formed in the interior of an atomic nucleus, and such clusters may occupy molecular-like orbitals, showing characteristics similar to normal molecules consisting of atoms. Chemical molecules having a linear alignment are commonly seen in nature, such as carbon dioxide. A similar linear alignment of the nuclear clusters, referred to as linear-chain cluster state (LCCS), has been studied since the 1950s, however, up to now there is no clear experimental evidence demonstrating the existence of such a state. Recently, it was proposed that an excess of neutrons may offer just such a stabilizing mechanism, revitalizing interest in the nuclear LCCS, specifically with predictions for their emergence in neutron-rich carbon isotopes. Here we present the experimental observation of {\alpha}-cluster states in the radioactive 14C nucleus. Using the 10Be+{\alpha} resonant scattering method with a radioactive beam, we observed a series of levels which completely agree with theoretically predicted levels having an explicit linear-chain cluster configuration. We regard this as the first strong indication of the linear-chain clustered nucleus., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

The $^{11}$C($\alpha$, p) reaction is an important $\alpha$-induced reaction competing with $\beta$-limited hydrogen-burning processes in high-temperature explosive stars. We directly measured its reaction cross sections both for the ground-state transition ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) and the excited-state transitions ($\alpha$, $p_{1}$) and ($\alpha$, $p_{2}$) at relevant stellar energies 1.3 - 4.5 MeV by an extended thick-target method featuring time of flight for the first time. We revised the reaction rate by numerical integration including the ($\alpha$, $p_{1}$) and ($\alpha$, $p_{2}$) contributions and also low-lying resonances of ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) using both the present and the previous experimental data which were totally neglected in the previous compilation works. The present total reaction rate lies between the previous ($\alpha$, $p_{0}$) rate and the total rate of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model calculation, which is consistent with the relevant explosive hydrogen-burning scenarios such as the $\nu p$-process., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, final version as submitted to Physical Review C for publication after peer-review

Measurement of nuclear cross sections at astrophysical energies involving unstable species is one of the most challenging tasks in experimental nuclear physics. The use of indirect methods is often unavoidable in this scenario. In this paper the Trojan Horse Method is applied for the first time to a radioactive ion beam induced reaction studying the $^{18}$F($p,{\alpha}$)$^{15}$O process at low energies relevant to astrophysics via the three body reaction $^{2}$H($^{18}$F,${\alpha}^{15}$O)n. The knowledge of the $^{18}$F($p, {\alpha}$)$^{15}$O reaction rate is crucial to understand the nova explosion phenomena. The cross section of this reaction is characterized by the presence of several resonances in $^{19}$Ne and possibly interference effects among them. The results reported in Literature are not satisfactory and new investigations of the $^{18}$F($p,{\alpha}$)$^{15}$O reaction cross section will be useful. In the present work the spin-parity assignments of relevant levels have been discussed and the astrophysical S-factor has been extracted considering also interference effects, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We have performed soft-X-ray angle resolved photoemission for metallic V$_2$O$_3$. Combining a micro focus beam (40 x 65 ${\mu}$m$^2$) and micro positioning techniques with a long working distance microscope, we have succeeded in observing band dispersions from tiny cleavage surfaces with typical size of the several tens of ${\mu}$m. The photoemission spectra show a clear position dependence reflecting the morphology of the cleaved sample surface. By selecting high quality flat regions on the sample surface, we have succeeded in band mapping using both photon-energy and polar-angle dependences, opening the door to three-dimensional ARPES for typical three dimensional correlated materials where large cleavage planes are rarely obtained., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Journal of Synchrotron Radiation

The $^{10}$B(p,$\alpha_0$)$^7$Be bare nucleus astrophysical S(E)-factor has been measured for the first time at energies from about 100 keV down to about 5 keV by means of the Trojan Horse Method (THM). In this energy region, the S(E)-factor is strongly dominated by the 8.699 MeV $^{11}$C level (J$^{\pi}$=$\frac{5}{2}$$^+$), producing an s-wave resonance centered at about 10 keV in the entrance channel. Up to now, only the high energy tail of this resonant has been measured, while the low-energy trend is extrapolated from the available direct data. The THM has been applied to the quasi-free $^2$H($^{10}$B,$\alpha_0$$^7$Be)n reaction induced at a boron-beam energy of 24.5 MeV. An accurate analysis brings to the determination of the $^{10}$B(p,$\alpha_0$)$^7$Be S(E)-factor and of the corresponding electron screening potential $U_e$, thus giving for the first time an independent evaluation of it., Comment: Authors thank the (anonymous) referee for detailed comments and suggestions. The $^{14}$O($\alpha$,$p$)$^{17}$F reaction is one of the key reactions involved in the breakout from the hot-CNO cycle to the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts (XRBs). The resonant properties in the compound nucleus $^{18}$Ne have been investigated through resonant elastic scattering of $^{17}$F+$p$. The radioactive $^{17}$F beam was separated by the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator (CRIB) and bombarded a thick H$_2$ gas target at 3.6 MeV/nucleon. The recoiling light particles were measured by three ${\Delta}$E-E silicon telescopes at laboratory angles of $\theta$$_{lab}$$\approx$3$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 18$^\circ$, respectively. Five resonances at $E_{x}$=6.15, 6.28, 6.35, 6.85, and 7.05 MeV were observed in the excitation functions, and their spin-parities have been determined based on an $R$-matrix analysis. In particular, $J^{\pi}$=1$^-$ was firmly assigned to the 6.15-MeV state which dominates the thermonuclear $^{14}$O($\alpha$,$p$)$^{17}$F rate below 2 GK. As well, a possible new excited state in $^{18}$Ne was observed at $E_{x}$=6.85$\pm$0.11 MeV with tentative $J$=0 assignment. This state could be the analog state of the 6.880 MeV (0$^{-}$) level in the mirror nucleus $^{18}$O, or a bandhead state (0$^+$) of the six-particle four-hole (6$p$-4$h$) band. A new thermonuclear $^{14}$O($\alpha$,$p$)$^{17}$F rate has been determined, and the astrophysical impact of multiple recent rates has been examined using an XRB model. Contrary to previous expectations, we find only modest impact on predicted nuclear energy generation rates from using reaction rates differing by up to several orders of magnitude., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We present a comprehensive structural study on perovskite-type 6H-Ba3CuSb2O9, which exhibits a spin-orbital short-range ordering on a honeycomb-based lattice. By combining synchrotron x-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, ultrasound measurement and Raman spectroscopy, we found that the static Jahn-Teller distortion is absent down to the lowest temperature in the present material, indicating orbital ordering is strongly suppressed. We discuss such an unusual state is realized with the help of spin degree of freedom, leading to a spin-orbital entangled liquid state., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PRL

The $^{18}$Ne($\alpha$,$p$)$^{21}$Na reaction is thought to be one of the key breakout reactions from the hot CNO cycles to the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts. In this work, the resonant properties of the compound nucleus $^{22}$Mg have been investigated by measuring the resonant elastic scattering of $^{21}$Na+$p$. An 89 MeV $^{21}$Na radioactive beam delivered from the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam Separator bombarded an 8.8 mg/cm$^2$ thick polyethylene (CH$_{2}$)$_{n}$ target. The $^{21}$Na beam intensity was about 2$\times$10$^{5}$ pps, with a purity of about 70% on target. The recoiled protons were measured at the center-of-mass scattering angles of $\theta_{c.m.}$$\approx$175.2${^\circ}$, 152.2${^\circ}$, and 150.5${^\circ}$ by three sets of $\Delta E$-$E$ telescopes, respectively. The excitation function was obtained with the thick-target method over energies $E_x$($^{22}$Mg)=5.5--9.2 MeV. In total, 23 states above the proton-threshold in $^{22}$Mg were observed, and their resonant parameters were determined via an $R$-matrix analysis of the excitation functions. We have made several new $J^{\pi}$ assignments and confirmed some tentative assignments made in previous work. The thermonuclear $^{18}$Ne($\alpha$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate has been recalculated based on our recommended spin-parity assignments. The astrophysical impact of our new rate has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing x-ray burst calculations. We find that the $^{18}$Ne($\alpha$,$p$)$^{21}$Na rate significantly affects the peak nuclear energy generation rate, reaction fluxes, as well as the onset temperature of this breakout reaction in these astrophysical phenomena.

Proton resonant states in $^{18}$Ne have been investigated by the resonant elastic scattering of $^{17}$F+$p$. The $^{17}$F beam was separated by the CNS radioactive ion beam separator (CRIB), and bombarded a thick H$_2$ gas target at 3.6 MeV/nucleon. The recoiled light particles were measured by using three sets of ${\Delta}$E-E Si telescope at scattering angles of $\theta$$_{lab}$$\approx 3^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 18$^\circ$, respectively. This reaction was thought to be one of the most probable key reactions for the breakout from the hot-CNO cycle to the $rp$-process in type I x-ray bursts In addition, a new excited state observed at $E_{x}$=6.85 MeV was tentatively assigned as 0$^{-}$, which could be the analog state of 6.880 MeV, 0$^{-}$ in mirror $^{18}$O., Comment: 3 figures

The $^{18}$Ne($\alpha$,$p$)$^{21}$Na reaction provides a pathway for breakout from the hot CNO cycles to the $rp$-process in type I x-ray bursts. The resonance structure in $^{11}$C is particularly of interest with regard to the astrophysical $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\gamma$) reaction, relevant at high temperature, and to the $\alpha$-cluster structure in $^{11}$C. The measurement was to determine unknown resonance parameters for the high excited states of $^{11}$C. In particular, the $\alpha$ decay width can be useful information to discuss $\alpha$ cluster structure in $^{11}$C. New measurements of the $^{7}$Be+$\alpha$ resonant scattering and the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p$)$^{10}$B reaction in inverse kinematics were performed for center-of-mass energy up to 5.5 MeV, and the resonances at excitation energies of 8.9--12.7 MeV in the compound $^{11}$C nucleus were studied. Inelastic scattering of $^{7}$Be+$\alpha$ and the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$ reaction were also studied with a simultaneous $\gamma$-ray measurement. The measurements were performed at the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) of the Center for Nuclear Study (CNS), the University of Tokyo. We obtained excitation functions of $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\alpha_0$)$^{7}$Be (elastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\alpha_1$)$^{7}$Be$^*$ (inelastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_0$)$^{10}$B, and $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$. Many resonances including a new one were observed and their parameters were determined by an R-matrix analysis. The resonances we observed possibly enhance the $^{7}$Be($\alpha$, $\gamma$) reaction rate but in a smaller magnitude than the lower-lying resonances. A new negative-parity cluster band, similar to the one previously suggested in the mirror nucleus $^{11}$B, is proposed.

The Trojan Horse Method was applied for the first time to a Radioactive Ion Beam induced reaction to study the reaction $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O via the three body reaction $^{18}$F(d,$\alpha$ $^{15}$O)n at the low energies relevant for astrophysics. The abundance of $^{18}$F in Nova explosions is an important issue for the understanding of this astrophysical phenomenon. For this reason it is necessary to study the nuclear reactions that produce or destroy $^{18}$F in Novae. $^{18}$F(p,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O is one of the main $^{18}$F destruction channels. The low-lying states in 106Zr and 108Zr have been investigated by means of {\beta}-{\gamma} and isomer spectroscopy at the RI beam factory, respectively. A new isomer with a half-life of 620\pm150 ns has been identified in 108Zr. For the sequence of even-even Zr isotopes, the excitation energies of the first 2+ states reach a minimum at N = 64 and gradually increase as the neutron number increases up to N = 68, suggesting a deformed sub-shell closure at N = 64. The deformed ground state of 108Zr indicates that a spherical sub-shell gap predicted at N = 70 is not large enough to change the ground state of 108Zr to the spherical shape. We report temperature-dependent surface x-ray scattering studies of the orbital ordered surface in La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. We find that the interfacial width of the electronic order grows as the bulk ordering temperature is approached from below, though the bulk correlation length remains unchanged. Close to the transition, the surface is so rough that there is no well-defined electronic surface, despite the presence of bulk electronic order, that is the electronic surface has melted. Above the bulk transition, finite-sized isotropic fluctuations of orbital order are observed, with a correlation length equal to that of the electronic surfaces' in-plane correlation length at the transition temperature.

Over the past three years, we have worked on developing a well-characterized 30S radioactive beam to be used in a future experiment aiming to directly measure the 30S(alpha,p) stellar reaction rate within the Gamow window of Type I X-ray bursts., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, Origin of Matter and Evolution of the Galaxies (OMEG10), March 2010, Osaka, Japan

Over the past three years, we have worked on developing a well-characterized 30S radioactive beam to be used in a future experiment aiming to directly measure the 30S(alpha,p) stellar reaction rate within the Gamow window of Type I X-ray bursts. The importance of the 30S(alpha,p) reaction to X-ray bursts is discussed. Given the astrophysical motivation, the successful results of and challenges involved in the production of a low-energy 30S beam are detailed. Effect of growth orientation on charge- and orbital-ordering (CO-OO) phenomena has been studied for Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 epitaxial thin films fabricated on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (LSAT) substrates by means of resistivity, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscopy measurements. CO-OO transition is observed around 220 K for a film grown on an LSAT (011) substrate ((011)-film), similarly to a bulk sample, while a film grown on a (001) plane of LSAT ((001)-film) shows much higher transition temperature around 300 K. The domain size of OO is approximately 3 times as large in the (011)-film as in the (001)-film. These results demonstrate that various properties of CO-OO phenomena can be controlled with the growth orientation via the epitaxial strain from the substrate., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

An electronic effect on a macroscopic domain structure is found in a strongly correlated half-doped manganite film Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO3 grown on a (011) surface of SrTiO3. The sample has a high-temperature (HT) phase free from distortion above 180K and two low-temperature (LT) phases with a large shear-mode strain and a concomitant twin structure. One LT phase has a large itinerancy (A-type), and the other has a small itinerancy (CE-type), while the lattice distortions they cause are almost equal. Our x ray diffraction measurement shows that the domain size of the LT phase made by the HT-CE transition is much smaller than that by the HT-A transition, indicating that the difference in domain size is caused by the electronic states of the LT phases., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

A new measurement of proton resonance scattering on 7Be was performed up to the center-of-mass energy of 6.7 MeV using the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) at the Center for Nuclear Study of the University of Tokyo. The excitation function of 7Be+p elastic scattering above 3.5 MeV was measured successfully for the first time, providing important information about the resonance structure of the 8B nucleus. The resonances are related to the reaction rate of 7Be(p, gamma)8B, which is the key reaction in solar 8B neutrino production. Evidence for the presence of two negative parity states is presented. One of them is a 2- state observed as a broad s-wave resonance, the existence of which had been questionable. Its possible effects on the determination of the astrophysical S-factor of 7Be(p, gamma)8B at solar energy are discussed. Structural study of orbital-ordered manganite thin films has been conducted using synchrotron radiation, and a ground state electronic phase diagram is made. The lattice parameters of four manganite thin films, Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (NSMO) or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (PSMO) on (011) surfaces of SrTiO3 (STO) or [(LaAlO3){0.3}(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3){0.7}] (LSAT), were measured as a function of temperature. The result shows, as expected based on previous knowledge of bulk materials, that the films' resistivity is closely related to their structures. Observed superlattice reflections indicate that NSMO thin films have an antiferro-orbital-ordered phase as their low-temperature phase while PSMO film on LSAT has a ferro-orbital-ordered phase, and that on STO has no orbital-ordered phase. A metallic ground state was observed only in films having a narrow region of A-site ion radius, while larger ions favor ferro-orbital-ordered structure and smaller ions stabilize antiferro-orbital-ordered structure. The key to the orbital-ordering transition in (011) film is found to be the in-plane displacement along [0-1 1] direction., Comment: 19pages, 11 figures

We report the first observation of `orbital truncation rods' -- the scattering arising from the termination of bulk orbital order at the surface of a crystal. The x-ray measurements, performed on a cleaved, single-layered perovskite, La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, reveal that while the crystallographic surface is atomically smooth, the orbital `surface' is much rougher, with an r.m.s. deviation from the average `surface' of ~0.7nm. We performed resonant and nonresonant x-ray diffraction studies of a Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 thin film that exhibits a clear first-order transition. Lattice parameters vary drastically at the metal-insulator transition at 170K (=T_MI), and superlattice reflections appear below 140K (=T_CO). The electronic structure between T_MI and T_CO is identified as A-type antiferromagnetic with the d_{x2-y2} ferroorbital ordering. Below T_CO, a new type of antiferroorbital ordering emerges. The accommodation of the large lattice distortion at the first-order phase transition and the appearance of the novel orbital ordering are brought about by the anisotropy in the substrate, a new parameter for the phase control., Comment: 4pages, 4figures

Experimental evidence of the d-f Coulomb interaction responsible for the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) from antiferroquadrupolar order in DyB2C2 is presented. The energy dependences of the RXS intensity with polarization analysis are analyzed by considering the interference between the resonances of dipolar (E1) and quadrupolar (E2) transition processes. It is found that the structure factors for the E1 and E2 processes have the same sign for sigma-pi' but the opposite sign for sigma-sigma' channel. This result, when compared with the calculated structure factors, means that the quadrupolar moments of the 4f and 5d electrons have opposite signs to each other. Interference between nonresonant Thomson scattering from the lattice distortion and the resonant scatterings is also studied and a direct coupling between 4f and the lattice is concluded., Comment: 4 pages

We investigated the origin of the energy splitting observed in the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) in manganites. Using thin film samples with controlled lattice parameters and orbital states at a fixed orbital filling, we estimated that the contribution of the interatomic Coulomb interaction relative to the Jahn-Teller mechanism is insignificant and at most 0.27. The "devil's staircase" type phase transition in the quarter-filled spin-ladder compound NaV2O5 has been discovered at low temperature and high pressure by synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction. A large number of transitions are found to successively take place among higher-order commensurate phases with 2a * 2b * zc type superstructures. The observed temperature and pressure dependence of modulation wave number qc, defined by 1/z, is well reproduced by the Axial Next Nearest Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model. The qc is suggested to reflect atomic displacements coupled with charge ordering in this system. The experimental fact implies that two competitive inter-layer interactions between the Ising spins, i.e., the nearest neighbor J1>0 (ferro) and the next nearest neighbor J2<0 (antiferro) along the c-axis, are intrinsic in this compound. A microscopic origin of the inter-layer interaction is not yet known; however, the nearest neighbor interaction J1>0 between the V2O5 layers is especially interesting. It is very surprising that the phase transition of such a complicated charge-lattice-spin coupled system NaV2O5 can be described by the simple ANNNI model., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report an x-ray scattering study of octahedral tilt ordering in the manganite series Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ with x=0.4 and 0.25 and in LaMnO$_3$. The sensitivity to tilt ordering is achieved by tuning the incident x-ray energy to the L$_I$, L$_{II}$ and L$_{III}$ absorption edges of Pr and La, respectively. The resulting energy-dependent profiles are characterized by a dipole-resonant peak and higher energy fine structure. The polarization dependence is predominantly $\sigma$-to-$\pi$ and the azimuthal dependence follows a sin-squared behavior. These results are similar to those obtained in recent x-ray scattering studies of orbital ordering carried out in these same materials at the Mn K edge. They lead to a description of the cross-section in terms of Templeton scattering in which the tilt ordering breaks the symmetry at the rare earth site. The most interesting result of the present work is our observation that octahedral tilt ordering persists above the orbital ordering transition temperatures in all three samples. Indeed, we identify separate structural transitions which may be associated with the onset of orbital and tilt ordering, respectively, and characterize the loss of tilt ordering versus temperature in LaMnO$_3$., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures
