Search

A new Short-Orbit Spectrometer (SOS) has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron (MAMI), with the goal to detect low-energy pions. It is equipped with a Browne-Buechner magnet and a detector system consisting of two helium-ethane based drift chambers and a scintillator telescope made of five layers. The detector system allows detection of pions in the momentum range of 50 - 147 MeV/c, which corresponds to 8.7 - 63 MeV kinetic energy. The spectrometer can be placed at a distance range of 54 - 66 cm from the target center. Two collimators are available for the measurements, one having 1.8 msr aperture and the other having 7 msr aperture. The Short-Orbit Spectrometer has been successfully calibrated and used in coincidence measurements together with the standard magnetic spectrometers of the A1 collaboration., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

The cross section of the $p(e,e'\pi^+)n$ reaction has been measured for five kinematic settings at an invariant mass of $W = 1094$ MeV and for a four-momentum transfer of $Q^2 = 0.078$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The measurement has been performed at MAMI using a new short-orbit spectrometer (SOS) of the A1 collaboration, intended for detection of low-energy pions. The transverse and longitudinal cross section terms were separated using the Rosenbluth method and the transverse-longitudinal interference term has been determined from the left-right asymmetry. The experimental cross section terms are compared with the calculations of three models: DMT2001, MAID2007 and $\chi$MAID. The results show that we do not yet understand the dynamics of the fundamental pion., Comment: version accepted for publishing

Double-polarization observables in the reaction $\vec{e}p \rightarrow e'\vec{p'}\gamma{}$ have been measured at $Q^2=0.33 (GeV/c)^2$. The experiment was performed at the spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration using the 855 MeV polarized electron beam provided by the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) and a recoil proton polarimeter. From the double-polarization observables the structure function $P_{LT}^\perp$ is extracted for the first time, with the value $(-15.4 \pm 3.3 (stat.)^{+1.5}_{-2.4} (syst.)) GeV^{-2}$, using the low-energy theorem for Virtual Compton Sattering. This structure function provides a hitherto unmeasured linear combination of the generalized polarizabilities of the proton.

Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on $^{208}$Pb has been extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be 6.70$\pm 0.03(stat)$ fm and 0.55$\pm 0.01(stat)$$^{+0.02}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness $\Delta r_{np}$=0.15$\pm 0.03(stat)$$^{+0.01}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm. The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of $^{208}$Pb has a halo character. The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of nuclei and the equation of state for neutron-rich matter., Comment: 4 figures 5 pages. Version submitted to journal. The paper describes a precise measurement of electron scattering off the proton at momentum transfers of $0.003 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 1$\ GeV$^2$. The average point-to-point error of the cross sections in this experiment is $\sim$ 0.37%. These data are used for a coherent new analysis together with all world data of unpolarized and polarized electron scattering from the very smallest to the highest momentum transfers so far measured. The extracted electric and magnetic form factors provide new insight into their exact shape, deviating from the classical dipole form, and of structure on top of this gross shape. The data reaching very low $Q^2$ values are used for a new determination of the electric and magnetic radii. An empirical determination of the Two-Photon-Exchange (TPE) correction is presented. We report new p$(\vec{e},e^\prime p)\pi^\circ$ measurements in the $\Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance at the low momentum transfer region utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The mesonic cloud dynamics are predicted to be dominant and appreciably changing in this region while the momentum transfer is sufficiently low to be able to test chiral effective calculations. The results disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable agreement with dynamical calculations with pion cloud effects, chiral effective field theory and lattice calculations. The reported measurements suggest that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements.

A new precise determination of the {\eta} meson mass is presented. It is based on a measurement of the threshold for the {\gamma}p -> p{\eta} reaction using the tagger focal-plane microscope detector at the MAMI-B facility in Mainz. The tagger microscope has a higher energy resolution than the standard tagging spectrometer and, hence, allowed an improvement in the accuracy compared to the previous {\eta} mass measurement at MAMI-B. The result m{\eta} = (547.851 +- 0.031 stat. +- 0.062 syst.) MeV agrees very well with the precise values of the NA48, KLOE and CLEO collaborations and deviates by about 5{\sigma} from the smaller, but also very precise value obtained by the GEM collaboration at COSY., Comment: Submitted for publication in EPJA

Precise total cross-sections and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for photoproduction of pion pairs off the proton producing $p\pi^0\pi^0$ and $n\pi^+\pi^0$ final states from the threshold region up to 800 MeV incident photon energy. Additionally, beam helicity asymmetries have been measured in the second resonance region (550 MeV - 820 MeV). The experiment was performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4$\pi$ solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The results are much more precise than any previous measurements and confirm the chiral perturbation theory predictions for the threshold behavior of these reactions. In the second resonance region, the invariant-mass distributions of meson-meson and meson-nucleon pairs are in reasonable agreement with model predictions, but none of the models reproduce the asymmetries for the mixed-charge channel., Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. New, accurate data are presented on the near threshold p(e,e'p)pi^0 reaction in the range of four-momentum transfers between Q^2=0.05 and 0.15GeV^2/c^2. The data were taken with the spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4MeV above threshold. These results supersede the previous analysis based on three separate experiments, and are compared with calculations in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory and with phenomenological models., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

In arXiv:1108.3058v1 [nucl-ex], Arrington criticizes the Coulomb corrections we applied in the analysis of high precision form factor data (see Phys.Rev.Lett.105:242001, 2010, arXiv:1007.5076v3 [nucl-ex]). We show, by comparing different calculations cited in the Comment, that the criticism of the Comment neglects the large uncertainty of "more modern" TPE corrections. This uncertainty has also been seen in recent polarized measurements. We rerun our analysis using one of these calculations. New precise results of a measurement of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. About 1400 cross sections were measured with negative four-momentum transfers squared up to Q^2=1 (GeV/c)^2 with statistical errors below 0.2%. The electric and magnetic form factors of the proton were extracted by fits of a large variety of form factor models directly to the cross sections. The form factors show some features at the scale of the pion cloud. The charge and magnetic radii are determined to be r_E=0.879(5)(stat.)(4)(syst.)(2)(model)(4)(group) fm and r_M=0.777(13)(stat.)(9)(syst.)(5)(model)(2)(group) fm., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, published in Phys. The reaction gamma p -> p pi0 gamma' has been measured with the Crystal Ball / TAPS detectors using the energy-tagged photon beam at the electron accelerator facility MAMI-B. Energy and angular differential cross sections for the emitted photon gamma' and angular differential cross sections for the pi0 have been determined with high statistics in the energy range of the Delta+(1232) resonance. Cross sections and the ratio of the cross section to the non-radiative process gamma p -> p pi0 are compared to theoretical reaction models, having the anomalous magnetic moment kappa_Delta+ as free parameter. As the shape of the experimental distributions is not reproduced in detail by the model calculations, currently no extraction of kappa_Delta+ is feasible., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures

Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz in the three isospin channels $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^0n$, $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{0}\pi^0p$ and $\vec{\gamma}p\to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}p$ . The circularly polarized photons, produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons, were tagged with the Glasgow magnetic spectrometer. Charged pions and the decay photons of $\pi^0$ mesons were detected in a $~4\pi$ electromagnetic calorimeter which combined the Crystal Ball detector with the TAPS detector. The precisely measured asymmetries are very sensitive to details of the production processes and are thus key observables in the modeling of the reaction dynamics., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Cross sections for the ^{3}He(e,e'pn)p reaction were measured for the first time at energy transfers of 220 and 270 MeV for several momentum transfers ranging from 300 to 450 MeV/c. Cross sections are presented as a function of the momentum of the recoil proton and the momentum transfer. Continuum Faddeev calculations using the Argonne V18 and Bonn-B nucleon-nucleon potentials overestimate the measured cross sections by a factor 5 at low recoil proton momentum with the discrepancy becoming much smaller at higher recoil momentum., Comment: 5, pages, 3 figures

A precise measurement of the Dalitz plot parameter, alpha, for the eta->3pi^0 decay is presented. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball and TAPS large acceptance photon detectors at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI-B electron accelerator in Mainz. The interference response function f_LT (R_LT) of the D(e,e'p)n reaction has been determined at squared four-momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.33 (GeV/c)^2 and for missing momenta up to p_miss= 0.29 (GeV/c). The results have been compared to calculations that reproduce f_LT quite well but overestimate the cross sections by 10 - 20% for missing momenta between 0.1 (GeV/c) and 0.2 (GeV/c) ., Comment: 12 Pages, 10 figures

We report on new H$(e,e^\prime p)\gamma$ measurements in the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance at $Q^2=0.06$ (GeV/c) carried out simultaneously with H$(e,e^\prime p)\pi^0$. It is the lowest $Q^2$ for which the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) reaction has been studied in the first resonance region. The VCS measured cross sections are well described by dispersion-relation calculations in which the multipole amplitudes derived from H$(e,e^\prime p)\pi^0$ data are used as input, thus confirming the compatibility of the results. The derived resonant magnetic dipole amplitude $M^{3/2}_{1+} = (40.60 \pm 0.70_{stat+sys})(10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+})$ at $W=$ 1232 MeV is in excellent agreement with the value extracted from H$(e,e^\prime p)\pi^0$ measurements., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The cross section of the $ep \to e' p' \gamma$ reaction has been measured at $Q^2 = 0.33$ (GeV/c)$^2$. The experiment was performed using the electron beam of the MAMI accelerator and the standard detector setup of the A1 Collaboration. The cross section is analyzed using the low-energy theorem for virtual Compton scattering, yielding a new determination of the two structure functions $P_LL}-P_{TT}/epsilon$ and $P_{LT}$ which are linear combinations of the generalized polarizabilities of the proton. We find somewhat larger values than in the previous investigation at the same $Q^2$. This difference, however, is purely due to our more refined analysis of the data. The results tend to confirm the non-trivial $Q^2$-evolution of the generalized polarizabilities and call for more measurements in the low-$Q^2$ region ($\le$ 1 (GeV/c)$^2$)., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. The performance of scintillating fibre detectors was studied with electrons at the spectrometer facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI, as well as in a C-12 beam of 2 AGeV energy and in a beam of different particle species at GSI. Multi-anode photomultipliers were used to read out one or more bundles of 128 fibres each in different geometries. For electrons a time resolution of FWHM = 1 ns was measured in a single detector plane with a detection efficiency epsilon > 99%. A time resolution of 310 ps (FWHM) between two planes of fibres was achieved for carbon ions, leading to a FWHM = 220 ps for a single detector. The hit position residual was measured with a width of FWHM = 0.27 mm. The variation in the measured energy deposition was Delta E/E= 15-20% (FWHM) for carbon ions. In addition, the energy response to p/pi/d particles was studied. We present the first detailed measurement of incoherent photoproduction of neutral pions to a discrete state of a residual nucleus. The $^{12}$C$(\gamma,\pi^{0})^{12}$C$^{*}_{4.4MeV}$ reaction has been studied with the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI employing a new technique which uses the large solid angle Crystal Ball detector both as a $\pi^{0}$ spectrometer and to detect decay photons from the excited residual nucleus. The technique has potential applications to a broad range of future nuclear measurements with the Crystal Ball and similar detector systems elsewhere. The data are sensitive to the propagation of the $\Delta$ in the nuclear medium and will give the first information on matter transition form factors from measurements with an electromagnetic probe. We propose a method for polarising antiprotons in a storage ring by means of a polarised positron beam moving parallel to the antiprotons. If the relative velocity is adjusted to $v/c \approx 0.002$ the cross section for spin-flip is as large as about $2 \cdot 10^{13}$ barn as shown by new QED-calculations of the triple spin-cross sections. Two possibilities for providing a positron source with sufficient flux density are presented. A polarised positron beam with a polarisation of 0.70 and a flux density of approximately $1.5 \cdot 10^{10}$/(mm$^2$ s) appears to be feasible by means of a radioactive $^{11}$C dc-source. A more involved proposal is the production of polarised positrons by pair production with circularly polarised photons. It yields a polarisation of 0.76 and requires the injection into a small storage ring. Such polariser sources can be used at low (100 MeV) as well as at high (1 GeV) energy storage rings providing a time of about one hour for polarisation build-up of about $10^{10}$ antiprotons to a polarisation of about 0.18. A comparison with other proposals show a gain in the figure-of-merit by a factor of about ten., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures; v2: minor language and signification corrections v3: (14 pages, 12 figures) major error, nonapplicable polarisation transfer cross sections replaced by the mandatory spin-flip cross sections

The differential cross sections \sigma_0=\sigma_T+\epsilon \sigma_L, \sigma_{LT}, and \sigma_{TT} of \pi^0 electroproduction from the proton were measured from threshold up to an additional center of mass energy of 40 MeV, at a value of the photon four-momentum transfer of Q^2= 0.05 GeV^2/c^2 and a center of mass angle of \theta=90^\circ. By an additional out-of-plane measurement with polarized electrons \sigma_{LT'} was determined. This showed for the first time the cusp effect above the \pi^+ threshold in the imaginary part of the s-wave. The predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory are in disagreement with these data. On the other hand, the data are somewhat better predicted by the MAID phenomenological model and are in good agreement with the dynamical model DMT., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The beam-recoil double polarization P_{x'}^h and P_{z'}^h and the recoil polarization P_{y'} were measured for the first time for the p(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})\eta reaction at a four-momentum transfer of Q^2=0.1 GeV^2/c^2 and a center of mass production angle of \theta = 120^\circ at MAMI C. With a center of mass energy range of 1500 MeV < W < 1550 MeV the region of the S_{11}(1535) and D_{13}(1520) resonance was covered. The results are discussed in the framework of a phenomenological isobar model (Eta-MAID). While P_{x'}^h and P_{z'}^h are in good agreement with the model, P_{y'} shows a significant deviation, consistent with existing photoproduction data on the polarized-target asymmetry., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

We report on the observation of a K$_s$p resonance signal at a mass of 1765$\pm$5 MeV/c$^2$, with intrinsic width $\Gamma = 108\pm 22$ MeV/c$^2$, produced inclusively in $\Sigma^-$-nucleus interactions at 340 GeV/c in the hyperon beam experiment WA89 at CERN. The signal was observed in the kinematic region $x_F>0.7$, in this region its production cross section rises approximately linearly with $(1-x_F)$, reaching $BR(X\to K_S p)\cdot d\sigma /dx_F = (5.2\pm 2.3) \mu b $ per nucleon at $x_F=0.8$. The hard \xf spectrum suggests the presence of a strong leading particle effect in the production and hence the identification as a $\Sigma^{*+}$ state. No corresponding peaks were observed in the $K^- p$ and $\Lambda \pi^{\pm}$ mass spectra.

One contribution to the time resolution of a scintillation detector is the signal time spread due to path length variations of the detected photons from a point source. In an experimental study a rectangular scintillator was excited by means of a fast pulsed ultraviolet laser at different positions along its longitudinal axis. Timing measurements with a photomultiplier tube in a detection plane displaced from the scintillator end face showed a correlation between signal time and tube position indicating only a small distortion of photon angles during transmission. The data is in good agreement with a Monte Carlo simulation used to compute the average photon angle with respect to the detection plane and the average propagation time. Limitations on timing performance that arise from propagation time dispersion are expected for long and thin scintillators used in future particle identification systems., Comment: Submitted to Nucl. This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. The beam-helicity asymmetry has been measured simultaneously for the reactions (e p \to e p \gamma) and (e p \to e p \pi^0) in the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance region at $Q^2=$ 0.35 (GeV/c)$^2$. The experiment was performed at MAMI with a longitudinally polarized beam and an out-of-plane detection of the proton. The results are compared with calculations based on Dispersion Relations for virtual Compton scattering and with the MAID model for pion electroproduction. There is an overall good agreement between experiment and theoretical calculations. The remaining discrepancies may be ascribed to an imperfect parametrization of some $\gamma^{(*)} N \to \pi N$ multipoles, mainly contributing to the non-resonant background. The beam-helicity asymmetry in both channels ($\gamma$ and $\pi^0$) shows a good sensitivity to these multipoles and should allow future improvement in their parametrization., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, version to appear in EPJA

We report new precise p$(\vec{e},e^\prime p)\pi^0$ measurements at the peak of the $\Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance at $Q^2=\unit[0.20](GeV/c)^2$ performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The new data are sensitive to both the electric quadrupole ($E2$) and the coulomb quadrupole ($C2$) amplitudes of the $\gamma^* N\to\Delta$ transition. They yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios CMR $= (-5.09 \pm 0.28_{stat+sys}\pm 0.30_{model})%$ and EMR $= (-1.96 \pm 0.68_{stat+sys} \pm 0.41_{model})%$ for $M^{3/2}_{1+} = (39.57 \pm 0.75_{stat+sys}\pm 0.40_{model})(10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+})$. The new results are in disagreement with Constituent Quark Model predictions and in qualitative agreement with models that account for mesonic contributions, including recent Lattice calculations. They thus give further credence to the conjecture of deformation in hadronic systems favoring the attribution of the origin of deformation to the dominance of mesonic effects., Comment: 2 figures

This paper describes the Monte Carlo simulation developed specifically for the VCS experiments below pion threshold that have been performed at MAMI and JLab. This simulation generates events according to the (Bethe-Heitler + Born) cross section behaviour and takes into account all relevant resolution-deteriorating effects. The KaoS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI, Germany, is perceived as the ideal candidate for a dedicated spectrometer in kaon and hypernuclei electroproduction. KaoS will be equipped with new read-out electronics, a completely new focal plane detector package consisting of scintillating fibres, and a new trigger system. First prototypes of the fibre detectors and the associated new front-end electronics are shown in this contribution. The Mainz hypernuclei research program will complement the hypernuclear experiments at the planned FAIR facility at GSI, Germany. At the proposed antiproton storage ring the spectroscopy of double Lambda hypernuclei is one of the four main topics which will be addressed by the PANDA Collaboration. The experiments require the operation of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in high magnetic fields (B= 1T) in the presence of a large hadronic background. There exists an inconsistency in the value of the kinetic energies of the antiproton in the electron laboratory reference frame and of the electron in the antiproton laboratory reference frame taken wrongly both as 0.65 keV (see figure 1 and table 2) of the paper. The consequence of this mistake is that the relative velocity of the electron is not -0.0504 (see table 2) but -0.00118, i.e. a factor of \sqrt{m_{electron}/m_{proton}} = 1/43 smaller. The consequence of this factor is that the relative velocity \beta_{relative} in eq. (27) and \kappa are smaller by this factor. This means that the time for polarisation build-up is longer by a factor 43. Though the principle idea is not put into question, the method is not effective "with todays technology" and we have to withdraw the paper and the proposal., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn

To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst} +/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/- 0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. These disagree with predictions of constituent quark models but are in reasonable agreement with lattice calculations with non-linear (chiral) pion mass extrapolations, with chiral effective field theory, and with dynamical models with pion cloud effects. These results confirm the dominance, and general Q^2 variation, of the pionic contribution at large distances., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries \rho_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=20deg) = (-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring also the result of Kalleicher et al. in accordance with the rest of the data is almost excluded., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. The electron-target-asymmetries A_parallel and A_perpendicular with target spin parallel and perpendicular to the momentum transfer q were measured for both the two-- and three-body breakup of 3He in the 3He(e,e'p)-reaction. Polarized electrons were scattered off polarized 3He in the quasielastic regime in parallel kinematics with the scattered electron and the knocked-out proton detected using the Three-Spectrometer-Facility at MAMI. The results are compared to Faddeev calculations which take into account Final State Interactions as well as Meson Exchange Currents. The experiment confirms the prediction of a large effect of Final State Interactions in the asymmetry of the three-body breakup and of an almost negligible one for the two-body breakup., Comment: accepted by Eur. The electric form factor of the neutron, G_En, has been measured at the Mainz Microtron by recoil polarimetry in the quasielastic D(e_pol,e'n_pol)p reaction. Three data points have been extracted at squared four-momentum transfers Q^2 = 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 (GeV/c)^2. We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300 MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. An experiment on the radiative pi^+ meson photoproduction from the proton (gamma p->gamma pi^+ n) was carried out at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in the kinematic region 537 MeV

In two series of high-resolution coincidence experiments at the three-spectrometer facility at MAMI, the H(e,e'pi^+)X and D(e,e'p)X reactions were studied to search for narrow nucleon resonances below pion threshold. The missing-mass resolution was 0.6 to 1.6 MeV/c^2 (FWHM) in the proton experiment and 0.9 to 1.3 MeV/c^2 in the deuteron experiment. The experiments covered the missing-mass region from the neutron mass up to about 1050 and 1100 MeV/c^2, respectively. None of our measurements showed a signal for narrow resonances to a level of down to 10^-4 with respect to the neutron peak in the missing-mass spectra., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

The charge form factor of the neutron has been determined from asymmetries measured in quasi--elastic pol.3He(pol e,e'n) at a momentum transfer of 0.67(GeV/c)^2. The recent unbiased measurements of the electric form factor of the neutron suggest that its shape may be interpreted as a smooth broad distribution with a bump at Q^2 \approx 0.3(GeV/c)^2 superimposed. As a consequence the corresponding charge distribution in the Breit frame shows a negative charge extending as far out as 2fm. It is natural to identify this charge with the pion cloud. This realisation is then used to reanalyse all old and new data of the electric and magnetic from factors of the proton and the neutron by a phenomenological fit and by a fit based on the constituent quark model. It is shown that it is possible to fit all form factors coherently with both ansaetzen and that they all show the signal of the pion cloud., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

Asymmetries in quasi-elastic pol 3He(pol e,e'p) have been measured at a momentum transfer of 0.67 (GeV/c)^2 and are compared to a calculation which takes into account relativistic kinematics in the final state and a relativistic one-body current operator. In a p(e_pol,e'p)pi_0 out-of-plane coincidence experiment at the 3-spectrometer setup of the Mainz Microtron MAMI, the beam-helicity asymmetry has been precisely measured around the energy of the Delta(1232) resonance and Q^2 = 0.2 (GeV/c)^2. The results are in disagreement with three up-to-date model calculations. This is interpreted as lack of understanding of the non-resonant background, which in dynamical models is related to the pion cloud., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

Precise data on the neutron magnetic form factor G_{mn} have been obtained with measurements of the ratio of cross sections of D(e,e'n) and D(e,e'p) up to momentum transfers of Q^2 = 0.9 (GeV/c)^2. Data with typical uncertainties of 1.5% are presented. The photon asymmetry in the reaction p(\vec{\gamma},\pi^{0})p close to threshold has been measured for the first time with the photon spectrometer TAPS using linearly polarized photons from the tagged-photon facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The total and differential cross sections were also measured simultaneously with the photon asymmetry. This allowed determination of the S-wave and all three P-wave amplitudes. The low-energy theorems based on the parameter-free third-order calculations of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory for P1 and P2 agree with the experimental values., Comment: 14 pages Latex including 3 figures and 1 table

We discuss different interpretations of peaks observed a few years ago by Tatischeff et al. in missing mass spectra of the reaction $pp->pi^+pX$, which were declared as new exited nucleon states with small masses. A study of the possible production of such states in the process $\gamma p->pi^+N^*->pi^+ +\gamma\gamma n$ by analyzing the invariant mass spectrum of $\gamma\gamma n$ is proposed. It is shown that the data, obtained recently at MAMI-B, can allow to analyze this process and to get information about an existence of exited nucleon states with small masses., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX with ws-p8-50x6-00.cls. Polarization transfer in the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at a Q^2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)^2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p (\vec e,e'\vec p) pi^0 reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q^2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)^2 and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized c.w. electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. Due to the spin precession in a magnetic spectrometer, all three proton polarization components P_x/P_e = (-11.4 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.4) %, P_y = (-43.1 \pm 1.3 \pm 2.2) %, and P_z/P_e = (56.2 \pm 1.5 \pm 2.6) % could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio CMR = (-6.4\pm 0.7_{stat}\pm 0.8_{syst}) % was determined from P_x in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal to transverse response is discussed., Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 1 table, 2 eps figures

Precision studies of the reaction $^{3}$He(e,e$^\prime$p) using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI are presented. All data are for quasielastic kinematics at $|\vec{q} | =685$ MeV/c. Absolute cross sections were measured at three electron kinematics. For the measured missing momenta range from 10 to 165 MeV/c, no strength is observed for missing energies higher than 20 MeV. Distorted momentum distributions were extracted for the two-body breakup and the continuum. The longitudinal and transverse behavior was studied by measuring the cross section for three photon polarizations. The longitudinal and transverse nature of the cross sections is well described by a currently accepted and widely used prescription of the off-shell electron-nucleon cross-section. A prototype of a novel superconductive undulator with a period length of 3.8 mm is described. The undulator is 100 periods long. In the first tests described in this paper the undulator was cooled in a helium bath and it was shown that it can be operated as expected with a maximum current of 1400 A. Afterwards the undulator field was measured with a miniature Hall probe with an active area of (100x100)x10^-6 m^2. Calculated and measured field distributions are in good agreement. A cryostat for a beam test at Mainz microtron MAMI was built in which liquid helium cools indirectly the in-vacuum undulator.
