20. Critical appearance size of doubly charged Xe clusters revisited.

Abstract

In previous experiments on doubly charged Xe clusters, no Xe2+n cluster ions were observed for n less than 53 atoms and no Xe3+n for n less than 114 atoms. From recent computer simulations it was inferred that Xe2+51 ions have lifetimes ∼100 ps while Xe2+55 ions have lifetimes ∼10 μs in agreement with these previous experimental results. Using a high performance mass spectrometer we have repeated these experiments. In contrast to these earlier findings, we are here able to observe doubly charged Xe cluster ions with sizes down to n2=47 (at lifetimes of ∼400 μs). The critical appearance size for triply charged Xe clusters is n3=108. In accordance with a recently suggested sequential ionization mechanism for the production of stable doubly charged van der Waals cluster ions, the appearance energy of Xe2+n was found to lie well below the appearance energy of Xe2+ from Xe. Abstract

CERN experiment WA89 has studied charmed particles produced by a Sigma^- beam at 340 GeV/c on nuclear targets. Production of particles which have light quarks in common with the beam is compared to production of those which do not. Considerable production asymmetries between D^- and D^p, D_s^ and D_s^+ and Lambda_c and Antilambda_c are observed. The results are compared with pion beam data and with theoretical calculations., LaTeX ; 16 pages including 4 ps figures

Abstract

We report on a high statistics search for the $\Xi^{--}(1860)$ resonance in $\Sigma^-$-nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 $\Xi^-$ candidates above background. For the decay channel $\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^-$ and the kinematic range 0.15$

In two data-taking periods in 1993 and 1994 an integrated luminosity of 1600 microb^-1 on copper and carbon targets was recorded. From the reconstruction of 930 +- 90 charm particle decays in 10 decay channels production cross sections for D, antiD, Ds and Lambdac were determined in the region xF>0. Assuming an A^1 dependence of the cross section on the nucleon number, we calculate a total ccbar production cross section of sigma(x_F > 0) = 5.3+- 0.4(stat)+-1.0(syst)+1.0(Xi_c) microb per nucleon. The last term is an upper limit on the unknown contribution from charmed-strange baryon production. Assuming an Al dependence of the cross section on the nucleon number, we calculate a total c (c) over bar production cross section of sigma(c (c) over bar)(x(F) gt 0) = 5.3 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) + 1.0 (Xi(c)) mu b per nucleon. The last term is an upper limit on the unknown contribution from charmed-strange baryon production.

Abstract

Charged particle production in central S-S collisions at 200 GeV/c per nucleon has been studied by the WA94 experiment at the CERN-SPS. Particle identification has been provided by the Omega RICH, while a silicon telescope in the Omega spectrometer and an array of MultiWire Proportional Chambers have been used to trace particles through the RICH detector. Production ratios and transverse mass spectra for pi(+/-), K+/- and p((p) over bar) at central rapidity and p(T) > 1.3 GeV/c are presented. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

45. Human seroprevalence against Borrelia burgdorferisensu lato in two comparable regions of the eastern Alps is not correlated to vector infection rates

Abstract

Seroprevalences were determined by testing sera of 1607 blood donors from North, East, and South Tyrol. In the Tyrols, the continental divide delimitates areas with high seroprevalences of IgG antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferisensu lato in the North (7.2%) from areas with low seroprevalences in the South (1.5%). To determine Borreliaprevalences in unfed Ixodes ricinusticks, 755 questing ticks were tested by PCR. Prevalences in nymphal and adult ticks were found to be 19.7% (n=132) and 21.5% (n=205) in North Tyrol and 23% (n=43) and 23.7% (n=376) in South Tyrol, respectively. Sequencing of 46 Borrelia-positive ticks yielded 74% Borrelia(B.) afzelii, 11% B. garinii, 7% B. lusitaniae, 7% B. burgdorferisensu stricto, and 2% B. valaisianainfections. Distinct genetic clusters could not be delimitated on either side of the continental divide. This study describes occurrence and geographic dispersion of Borreliaspp. in the Tyrols, discusses possible reasons for significant differences in human seroprevalence, and indicates that prevalence of Borreliain vector ticks is not a direct predictive factor for the local seroprevalence in humans.

Abstract

The aim of our study was to assess the occurrence of Rickettsia in the inner-alpine valleys of the Eastern Alps and to determine the amount of seroreaction among the local human population. Ticks were investigated by PCR and the percentage of seropositives was determined among local blood donors by an in-house immunofluorescence assay. The local cut-off titre for screening of IgG was set at 1 : 128 with a well-characterised low-risk collective according to WHO-guidelines. Positive sera were confirmed by independent re-testing. Rickettsia is present in ticks north and south of the continental divide. Of 259 ticks investigated, 12.4% are positive for Rickettsia. Of over 1200 blood donors tested so far, 7.7% bear IgG at a titre of 1 : 128 or higher against R. helvetica. R. helvetica is present in the study area, causes immunoreaction among local residents and is associated with anamnestic erythema. Furthermore, screening with a second Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia indicates that significant parts of the Tyrolean population are exposed to a Rickettsia other than R. helvetica.
