Eosinophils are known to play a crucial role in equine insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH), an allergic and pruritic dermatitis. Given the relevant role of eosinophils in disease pathology, a virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccination targeting equine Interleukin (eIL)-5 has been shown to significantly reduce eosinophil levels in the blood and hence reduced IBH symptoms in horses. The aim of the present study was to assess the presence of different eosinophil subtypes in horses, describe characteristics of these subtypes and evaluate the effect of eIL-5-CuMVTT vaccination on these subtypes. The study involved healthy horses, untreated IBH horses, eIL-5-CuMVTT vaccinated and placebo-treated IBH horses, assessed in parallel during the same IBH season. For the first time, this study showed presence of two distinct eosinophil subtypes in horses. An inflammatory subtype was associated with allergy, which had a significantly larger cell size, increased intracellular granula and higher surface expression of the integrin CD49f . Regulatory steady-state eosinophils were identified in healthy blood sample and with smaller relative cell size, had less intracellular granula and significantly lower levels of surface integrin CD49f . The eIL-5-CuMVTT vaccination significantly reduced eosinophil levels in the blood throughout the whole IBH season, indicating IL-5-dependence of inflammatory eosinophils. However, it did not alter the phenotype of the remaining cells. The mechanism of action of vaccination likely acts by limiting availability of eosinophils in the blood for extravasation into the skin.

Background: There is a paucity of research describing the gait pattern of lame horses at the walk. Objectives: To describe the changes in motion pattern and vertical ground reaction forces (GRFz) in horses with induced forelimb lameness at the walk and compare those changes with the changes observed at the trot. Study design: Experimental study. Methods: In 10 clinically sound Warmblood horses, moderate forelimb lameness was induced using a sole pressure model followed by trot and walk on a treadmill. In Icelandic horses (ICE), high, long hooves with added weights are often used to improve gait quality in competitions. From a biomechanical point of view, excessively long hooves can be problematic as they increase forces acting on the distal limb. The study aimed to determine if hoof capsule size and angle of ICE at competitions are comparable to those of Warmblood horses (WB) requiring shoeing. Hoof dimensions and balance were quantified in 13 horses of each breed at the beginning of a shoeing period (BSP), allowing a baseline comparison between breeds, as well as for WB at the end of a shoeing period (ESP) and for ICE when shod for competition (COMP). Left front and hind hoof capsules and bony structures of the hooves were measured on lateromedial and dorsopalmar/dorsoplantar radiographs at BSP (ICE, WB), ESP (WB) and COMP (ICE), respectively, using the software Metron-Hoof-Pro. Compared to WBBSP, ICEBSP had larger hoof capsules relative to the size of P3 and, when controlled for withers height, longer dorsal hoof wall lengths. The comparison of ICECOMP to WBESP indicated that the relative increase in hoof length and volume was greater in ICECOMP compared to WBESP. Hoof balance was closer to previously published values in WBs, while hoof angles in ICE (particularly palmar/plantar angle of P3) were generally larger and thus less problematic. In conclusion, hooves of ICECOMP were relatively larger and less balanced than WBESP, but hoof angles in WB were smaller than in ICE.

In order to improve the four-beat-rhythm and forelimb action of the tolt in Icelandic horses (ICE), special shoeing techniques are applied particularly in the front hooves by increasing hoof length and height, or by adding weight to the distal limbs. Although regulations limit dorsal hoof wall length (LDHW) in competition ICE, their shoeing often deviates from a biomechanically optimal distal limb conformation. This study aimed to qualitatively and quantitatively describe current shoeing practices of ICE in competition. Moreover, the influence of LDHW on the occurrence of deviations from a standard hoof conformation, as well as on tolt performance was investigated. At four European competition sites, hoof dimensions of 133 randomly selected ICE were measured manually, and limb conformation and hoof balance were described. Dorsopalmar/-plantar and lateromedial radiographs of the left front and hind hooves were taken of each horse. Various parameters related to hoof dimensions and balance were measured on radiographs using the Metron-Hoof-Pro software. Flares of the dorsal hoof wall had the highest prevalence of all investigated hoof deformities. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that longer LDHW was associated with the occurrence of toe flares (P = 0.045), a broken hoof pastern axis (P = 0.003), and asymmetry of the quarter wall heights (P = 0.015). However, horses with a longer LDHW achieved higher scores in competition. In spite of its positive effect on tolt performance, a long LDHW is not recommendable as it may be associated with a higher prevalence of certain hoof deformities.

OBJECTIVE To compare gait mechanics and limb loading in Icelandic horses tölting and trotting at equal speeds and estimate their impact on orthopedic health. ANIMALS 12 orthopedically normal Icelandic horses. PROCEDURES Kinetic and kinematic gait variables were simultaneously recorded as each horse was ridden at a tölt and trot on an instrumented treadmill at 3.4 m/s and 3.9 m/s. Differences between gaits were tested via 1-factor repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS Horses had a higher stride rate and lower stride impulses at a tölt than at a trot. For forelimbs at a tölt, shorter relative stance duration resulted in higher peak vertical force (Fzpeak). Conversely, for hind limbs, longer relative stance duration resulted in lower Fzpeak. The higher head-neck position at a tölt versus trot caused no weight shift to the hind limbs, but a higher forehoof flight arc and lower proretraction movement were identified. Stance durations for forelimbs were briefer than for hind limbs at a tölt, and the inverse was observed at a trot. Minimal height of the horse's trunk at the point of Fzpeak of the respective limb suggested a spring-like mechanism for all limbs at a tölt. Hind limb measurements revealed no evidence of increased collection. Stride-to-stride limb timing varied more at a tölt than at a trot. At a trot, horses had brief or no suspension phases and a slightly 4-beated footfall rhythm was common. Post hoc energetic estimations revealed that tölting at the measured speeds was less advantageous than trotting. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE High forelimb action in Icelandic horses and higher head-neck position at a tölt were associated with more restricted limb proretraction, higher Fzpeak, and faster force onset than at a trot. The impact of these differences on orthopedic health needs to be investigated more in detail.

In studies of equine locomotion, treadmills and accompanying measuring systems have become a widely used tool. Before any reliable data can be collected, horses have to habituate to treadmill locomotion. The aim of the present study was to investigate this process of habituation to an instrumented treadmill by analyzing kinetic data and heart rate (HR) at walk and trot and to determine the minimal number of training sessions needed to perform reliable numerical gait analysis. Fourteen Warmblood horses were assigned to two groups of seven subjects each, performing either a simple training of 10 minutes or a more demanding training of 20 minutes. Horses passed 10 consecutive training sessions within 6 days. Before and after each training session, measurements of vertical ground reaction forces, contact times, hoof position, and HR were made. Separately, for each variable and for each gait, the consecutive measurements of the two training regimes were compared with the data of the 10th training session using two-factor repeated measures analysis of variance. The number of sessions needed for habituation was determined accordingly (P < .05). At the trot, objective lameness assessment for clinical use is reliable after a minimum of four training sessions, whereas corresponding investigations at the walk demand four to five training sessions. For longitudinal studies or before and after treatment investigations, a minimum of five sessions is necessary to ensure results that are unbiased from ongoing treadmill experience at both gaits.

Summary Reasons for performing study: Frequent supraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias during and after exercise are considered pathological in horses. Prevalence of arrhythmias seen in apparently healthy horses is still a matter of debate and may depend on breed, athletic condition and exercise intensity. Objectives: To determine intra- and interobserver agreement for detection of arrhythmias at rest, during and after exercise using a telemetric electrocardiography device. Materials and methods: The electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings of 10 healthy Warmblood horses (5 of which had an intracardiac catheter in place) undergoing a standardised treadmill exercise test were analysed at rest (R), during warm-up (W), during exercise (E), as well as during 0–5 min (PE0–5) and 6–45 min (PE6–45) recovery after exercise. The number and time of occurrence of physiological and pathological ‘rhythm events’ were recorded. Events were classified according to origin and mode of conduction. The agreement of 3 independent, blinded observers with different experience in ECG reading was estimated considering time of occurrence and classification of events. Results: For correct timing and classification, intraobserver agreement for observer 1 was 97% (R), 100% (W), 20% (E), 82% (PE0–5) and 100% (PE6–45). Interobserver agreement between observer 1 vs. observer 2 and between observer 1 vs. 3, respectively, was 96 and 92.6% (R), 83 and 31% (W), 0 and 13% (E), 23 and 18% (PE0–5), and 67 and 55% (PE6–45). When including the events with correct timing but disagreement for classification, the intraobserver agreement increased to 94% during PE0–5 and the interobserver agreement reached 83 and 50% (W), 20 and 50% (E), 41 and 47% (PE0–5), and 83.5 and 65% (PE6–45). The interobserver agreement increased with observer experience. Conclusions: Intra- and interobserver agreement for recognition and classification of events was good at R, but poor during E and poor-moderate during recovery periods. These results highlight the limitations of stress ECG in horses and the need for high-quality recordings and adequate observer training.

This paper presents a simplistic passive dynamic model that is able to create realistic quadrupedal walking, tölting, and trotting motions. The model is inspired by the bipedal spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model and consists of a distributed mass on four massless legs. Each of the legs is either in ground contact, retracted for swing, or is ready for touch down with a predefined angle of attack. Different gaits, that is, periodic motions differing in interlimb coordination patterns, are generated by choosing different initial model states. Contact patterns and ground reaction forces (GRFs) evolve solely from these initial conditions. By identifying appropriate system parameters in an optimization framework, the model is able to closely match experimentally recorded vertical GRFs of walking and trotting of Warmblood horses, and of tölting of Icelandic horses. In a detailed study, we investigated the sensitivity of the obtained solutions with respect to all states and parameters and quantified the improvement in fitting GRF by including an additional head and neck segment. Our work suggests that quadrupedal gaits are merely different dynamic modes of the same structural system and that we can interpret different gaits as different nonlinear elastic oscillations that propel an animal forward.

Objective—To evaluate the effects of shock wave treatment on cutaneous nerve function, compared with the effects of local nerve block and sedation. Animals—18 clinically sound Swiss Warmbloods. Procedure—Horses were randomly allocated to 3 groups and received different amounts and types of shock waves (extracorporeal shock wave treatment [ESWT] or radial pressure wave treatment [RPWT]). Horses were sedated with xylazine and levomethadone. Shock waves were applied to the lateral palmar digital nerve at the level of the proximal sesamoid bones on 1 forelimb. Skin sensitivity was evaluated by means of an electrical stimulus at the coronary band before and 5 minutes after sedation and at 4, 24, and 48 hours after application of ESWT or RPWT. On the contralateral forelimb, skin sensitivity was tested before and 10 minutes after an abaxial sesamoid nerve block. Results—No significant changes in skin sensitivity were detected, regardless of the shock wave protocol applied. Mean reaction thresholds after sedation were more than twice the baseline thresholds. After the abaxial sesamoid block, no reaction was recorded in any of the horses. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance—Application of ESWT or RPWT to the palmar digital nerve had no effect on cutaneous sensation distal to the treated region for at least 2 days after application. The analgesic effect of sedation on reaction to electrical stimuli was distinct but varied among horses. (Am J Vet Res 2005;66:2095–2100)

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Daten über die Schrittcharakteristika oder die Bodenreaktionskräfte von Milchkühen gewinnen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Deshalb wurden kinetische Variablen von gesunden Jungrindern und Kühen, die auf einem Laufband im Schritt gingen, dokumentiert und ausgewertet. Material und Methodik: Neun Jungrinder und 10 Kühe wurden an das Gehen auf dem Laufband gewöhnt. Mit dem mit Kraftaufnehmern versehenen Laufband konnten Bodenreaktionskräfte, Schrittlängen und zeitliche Variablen der Stütz- und Hangbeinphasen für alle Gliedmaßen gleichzeitig aufgezeichnet werden. Ergebnisse: Die Kühe gingen bei einer durchschnittlichen Geschwindigkeit von 1,2 ± 0,05 m/s (Mittelwert ± Standardabweichung) mit einer Doppelschrittkadenz von 43,0 ± 1,9/min und einer Doppelschrittlänge von 1,68 ± 0,1 m. Bei den Jungrindern ergaben sich für die entsprechenden Parameter 1,3 ± 0,04 m/s, 53,7 ± 2,2/min und 1,49 ± 0,05 m. Der zeitliche Anteil der Stützbeinphase relativ zur Dauer eines Doppelschritts war bei Kühen an den Schultergliedmaßen (67%) signifikant größer als an den Beckengliedmaßen (64%). Die Kraft-Zeit-Kurven aller Gliedmaßen waren zweigipflig mit einem Gipfel (FP1) kurz nach dem Auffußen und einem Gipfel (FP2) in der Abstoßphase. Die vertikale Bodenreaktionskraft war an den Beckengliedmaßen bei FP1 am höchsten, an den Schultergliedmaßen bei FP2. Das zwischen den beiden Gipfeln befindliche Minimum lag mit 45–49% der Stützbeinphase kurz vor deren Mitte. Der Anteil beider Schultergliedmaßen am Gesamtimpuls betrug 53,7% bei Kühen und 55,0% bei Jungrindern. Die Lage des Körperschwerpunkts variierte während der einzelnen Bewegungsphasen, war jedoch immer mehr zu den Schultergliedmaßen hin lokalisiert. Schlussfolgerungen: Gesunde Kühe und Jungrinder zeigten einen symmetrischen Gang mit minimalen intraindividuellen Abweichungen. Die Hinterbeine wurden vorwiegend beim Auffußen, die Vorderbeine beim Abstoßen vermehrt belastet. Die Vorderbeine hatten einen größeren Anteil am Gesamtimpuls. Die Untersuchung liefert kinetische Daten für die Ganganalyse von gesunden Kühen und Jungrindern, die bei der automatisierten Erkennung lahmer Rinder nützlich sein können.

Introduction . Compared to most equine horse breeds which are able to walk, trot and canter /gallop, the gait repertoire of the Icelandic horses additionally includes the lateral gait tölt and frequently also the pace. With respect to the tölt gait, special shoeing, saddling and riding techniques have been developed for Icelandic horses in order to enhance its expressiveness and regularity. Toes are left unnaturally long and heavy shoes and paddings, as well as weighted boots are used to enforce the individual gait predisposition. For the same reason, the rider is placed more caudally to the horse's centre of mass as compared to other riding techniques. The biomechanical impact of these methods on the health of the locomotor system has so far never been subject of systematic research. Objectives . The aims of the presented study are (1) to describe the kinetic and kinematic characteristics of the tölt performed on a treadmill, (2) to understand the mechanical consequences of shoeing manipulation (long hooves, weighted boots) on the loading and protraction movement of the limbs, as well as (3) to study the pressure distribution and effects on the gait pattern of 3 different saddle types used for riding Icelandic horses. Materials and methods . Gait analysis was carried out in 13 Icelandic horses at walk and at slow and medium tölting and trotting speeds on a high-speed treadmill instrumented for measuring vertical ground reaction forces as well as temporal and spatial gait variables. Kinematic data of horse, rider and saddle were measured simultaneously. Gait analysis was first carried out with high, long hooves (SH) without and in combination with weighted boots (ad aim (2)). Afterwards, horses were re-shod according to current horseshoeing standards (SN) and gait analysis was repeated (ad aims (1) and (2)). In a second trial, horses were additionally equipped with a pressure sensitive saddle mat and were ridden with a dressage-like saddle (SDres), an Icelandic saddle (Slcel) and a saddle cushion (SCush) in the standard saddle position (ad aim 3). Results and conclusions . Compared to trot at the same speed, tölting horses had a higher stride rate and lower stride impulses. At the tölt loading of the forelimbs was increased in form of higher peak vertical forces (Fzpeak) due to shorter relative stance durations (StDrel). Conversely, in the hindlimbs, longer StDrel resulted in lower Fzpeak. Despite the higher head-neck position at tölt, there was no measurable shift in weight to the hindlimbs. Footfall rhythm was in most horses laterally coupled at the tölt and frequently had a slight fourbeat and a very short suspension phase at trot; underlining the fact that performance of correct gaits in Icelandic horses needs special training. Gait performance as it is currently judged in competition could be improved using a shoeing with SH, resulting in a 21 ± 5 mm longer dorsal hoof wall, but also a weight gain of 273 ± 50 g at the distal limb due to heavier shoeing material. Compared to SN, SH led to a lower stride rate, a longer stride length and a higher, but not wider, forelimb protraction arc, which were also positively associated with speed. At the tölt, the footfall rhythm showed less tendency to lateral couplets and at the trot, the suspension phase was longer. However, on the long term, SH may have negative implications for the health of the palmar structures of the distal foot by increased limb impulses, higher torques at breakover (up to 20%); as well as peak vertical forces at faster speeds. Compared to the shoeing style, the saddle type had less influence on limb forces or movements. The slight weight shift to the rear with SCush and Slcel may be explained by the more caudal position of the rider relative to the horse's back. With SCush, pressure was highest under the cranial part of the saddle, whereas the saddles with trees had more pressure under the caudal area.

This case describes the findings in a Swiss Braunvieh cow with a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) in the nasopharynx. The major clinical signs were mixed dyspnoea with inspiratory and expiratory noises. Radiographic views of the head revealed an irregular mass with soft-tissue density in the nasopharynx originating from the dorsal pharynx and occupying and restricting the pharyngeal cavity. Endoscopic examination showed a lobulated mass obstructing almost the entire lumen of the aboral nasal passages and nasopharynx. Postmortem examination revealed a lobulated mass in the choanae with a broad attachment to the dorsal pharynx and histologically a soft tissue sarcoma with tumour cells positive for the S-100 and p75NTR (neurotrophin receptor) proteins and negative for CNPase. Electron microscopic examination showed few structures that indicated that the tumour originated from Schwann cells.Der vorliegende Fall beschreibt die Befunde einer Kuh mit einem malignen peripheren Nervenscheidentumor im Nasopharynx. Das klinische Hauptsymptom war eine gemischte Dyspnoe mit inspiratorischen und exspiratorischen Stenosegeräuschen. Die röntgenologische Untersuchung des Kopfes stellte eine irregulär geformte weichteildichte Masse im Nasopharynx dar, die vom Pharynxdach ausging und das Lumen des Pharynx massiv einengte. Die Endoskopie bestätigte, dass eine lobulierte Masse das Lumen des Nasopharynx nahezu verschloss. Die Sektion zeigte makroskopisch eine lobulierte Masse, die bis in die Choanen reichte und grossflächig dem Pharynxdach entsprang. Histologisch handelte es sich um ein Weichteilsarkom mit immunhistochemisch S-100 und p75NTR (Neurotrophin Rezeptor) positiven, aber CNPase negativen Tumorzellen. Eine elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung konnte nur bei vereinzelten Zellen Strukturen finden, die auf Schwann-Zell Ursprung der entarteten Zellen hinwiesen.

To enhance expressiveness of forelimb movement and improve the four-beat rhythm of the tölt, Icelandic horses are commonly ridden with excessively high and long hooves. The aim of this study was to objectively assess the effect of shoeing on intra- and inter-limb coordination and limb movement consistency (inter-stride variability) at walk, tölt and trot. Thirteen sound and fit Icelandic horses accustomed to exercise with a rider on a treadmill were assessed with long and high hooves commonly used for competition (S(H)) and with the hooves trimmed according to the standards of normal shoeing (S(N)). Limb timing variables were extracted from the four vertical ground reaction force curves measured with an instrumented treadmill. Measurements were taken at walk and at two tölting and trotting speeds. High hooves with long toes reduced stride rate and increased breakover duration. At the tölt, the footfall rhythm showed less tendency to lateral couplets. Movement consistency of the walk remained unchanged, whereas, at the tölt, stride-to-stride variability of selected time parameters increased in SH and/or at the higher velocity. At the faster trotting speed, variability of hind limb duty factor decreased, whereas variability of contralateral step duration in the forelimb increased. High hooves with long toes improve the clearness of the four-beat footfall rhythm of the tölt, but disturb the movement consistency of the gait. The prolonged breakover duration observed in all gaits may have negative implications for the health of the palmar structures of the distal foot.

Icelandic horse riding practices aim to place the rider further caudally on the horse's back than in English riding, claiming that a weight shift toward the hindquarters improves the quality of the tölt (e.g. giving the shoulder more freedom to move). This study compared saddle pressure patterns and the effects on limb kinetics and kinematics of three saddles: an Icelandic saddle (S(Icel), lowest point of seat in the hind part of the saddle), a treeless saddle cushion (S(Cush)) and a dressage-style saddle (S(Dres)). Twelve Icelandic horses were ridden with S(Icel), S(Cush) and S(Dres) on an instrumented treadmill at walk and tölt. Saddle pressure, limb forces and kinematics were recorded simultaneously. With S(Cush), pressure was highest under the front part of the saddle, whereas the saddles with trees had more pressure under the hind area. The saddles had no influence on the motion patterns of the limbs. The slight weight shift to the rear with S(Cush) and S(Icel) may be explained by the more caudal position of the rider relative to the horse's back.

Reasons for performing study: The load acting on the limbs and the load distribution between fore- and hindlimbs while performing specific dressage exercises lack objective assessment. Hypothesis: The greater a horse's level of collection, the more load is shifted to the rear and that during the passage the vertical load on the limbs increases in relation to the accentuated vertical movement of the centre of mass. Methods: Back and limb kinematics, vertical ground reaction force and time parameters of each limb were measured in 6 Grand Prix dressage horses performing on an instrumented treadmill at the trot and the passage. Horses were ridden by their own professional rider. Results: At the passage, horses moved at a slower speed (-43.2%), with a lower stride frequency (-23.6%) and, therefore, higher stride impulses (+31.0%). Relative stance duration of fore- and hindlimbs and suspension duration remained unchanged. While at the trot the diagonal limbs impacted almost simultaneously, the hindlimbs always impacted first at the passage; the time dissociation between landing and lift-off remained unchanged. Because of the prolonged stride duration, stride impulse and consequently limb impulses were higher at the passage in the fore- as well as in the hindlimbs (+24.8% and +39.9%, respectively). Within the diagonal limb pair, load was shifted from the forehand to the hindquarters (percentage stride impulse carried by the forehand -4.8%). Despite the higher impulses, peak vertical forces in the fore- and hindlimbs remained unchanged because of the prolonged absolute stance durations in fore- and hindlimbs (+28.1% and +32.2%, respectively). Conclusions: Based on the intralimb timing, the passage closely resembles the trot. Compared to other head-neck positions, the higher degree of collection resulted in a pronounced shift in impulse towards the hindquarters. Despite the higher limb impulses, peak forces acting on the limbs were similar to those observed at the trot. Potential clinical relevance: An understanding of load distribution between fore- and hindlimbs in relation to different riding techniques is crucial to prevent wear-and-tear on the locomotor apparatus.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an accepted form of treatment for chronic cases of proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD). Subjective evaluation of horses shortly after being treated with ESWT has led clinicians to comment on an immediate reduction in lameness. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of ESWT on 16 horses with PSD or PSD-like pain in a fore- or hindlimb. To objectively assess lameness, gait analysis was performed on an instrumented treadmill before and 6, 24, 48 and 72h after ESWT of the origin of the suspensory ligament and the results compared to the effects of local anaesthesia. Stride frequency, stance duration, vertical impulse and peak vertical force were determined. Thermographic imaging and evaluation of skin sensitivity of the treated area were carried out before and after ESWT in the same interval as gait analysis. The results showed that there were no significant improvements in the investigated parameters at any time after ESWT; however, in horses with affected forelimbs the contralateral weightbearing asymmetry decreased significantly 72h after ESWT. Neither skin sensitivity nor thermographic imaging revealed changes that could be attributed to ESWT.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: It is believed that the head-neck position (HNP) has specific effects on the loading pattern of the equine locomotor system, but very few quantitative data are available. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effects of 6 different HNPs on forelimb-hindlimb loading and underlying temporal changes. METHODS: Vertical ground reaction forces of each limb and interlimb coordination were measured in 7 high level dressage horses walking and trotting on an instrumented treadmill in 6 predetermined HNPs: HNP1--unrestrained; HNP2--elevated neck, bridge of the nose in front of the vertical; HNP3--elevated neck, bridge of the nose behind the vertical; HNP4--low and flexed neck; HNP5--head and neck in extreme high position; and HNP6--forward downward extension of head and neck. HNP1 served as a velocity-matched control. RESULTS: At the walk, the percentage of vertical stride impulse carried by the forehand (Iz(fore)) as well as stride length and overreach distance were decreased in HNP2, HNP3, HNP4 and HNP5 when compared to HNP1. At the trot, Iz(fore) was decreased in HNP2, HNP3, HNP4 and HNP5. Peak forces in the forelimbs increased in HNP5 and decreased in HNP6. Stance duration in the forelimbs was decreased in HNP2 and HNP5. Suspension duration was increased in HNP2, HNP3 and HNP5. Overreach distance was shorter in HNP4 and longer in HNP6. CONCLUSIONS: In comparison to HNP1 and HNP6, HNPs with elevation of the neck with either flexion or extension at the poll as well as a low and flexed head and neck lead to a weight shift from the forehand to the hindquarters. HNP5 had the biggest effect on limb timing and load distribution. At the trot, shortening of forelimb stance duration in HNP5 increased peak vertical forces although Iz(fore) decreased. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: Presented results contribute to the understanding of the value of certain HNPs in horse training.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Little is known in quantitative terms about the influence of different head-neck positions (HNPs) on the loading pattern of the locomotor apparatus. Therefore it is difficult to predict whether a specific riding technique is beneficial for the horse or if it may increase the risk for injury. OBJECTIVE: To improve the understanding of forelimb-hindlimb balance and its underlying temporal changes in relation to different head and neck positions. METHODS: Vertical ground reaction force and time parameters of each limb were measured in 7 high level dressage horses while being ridden at walk and trot on an instrumented treadmill in 6 predetermined HNPs: HNP1 - free, unrestrained with loose reins; HNP2 - neck raised, bridge of the nose in front of the vertical; HNP3 - neck raised, bridge of the nose behind the vertical; HNP4 - neck lowered and flexed, bridge of the nose considerably behind the vertical; HNP5 - neck extremely elevated and bridge of the nose considerably in front of the vertical; HNP6 - neck and head extended forward and downward.
