We consider machine learning techniques associated with the application of a Boosted Decision Tree (BDT) to searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for pair-produced lepton partners which decay to leptons and invisible particles. This scenario can arise in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), but can be realized in many other extensions of the Standard Model (SM). We focus on the case of intermediate mass splitting ($\sim 30~{\rm GeV}$) between the dark matter (DM) and the scalar. For these mass splittings, the LHC has made little improvement over LEP due to large electroweak backgrounds. We find that the use of machine learning techniques can push the LHC well past discovery sensitivity for a benchmark model with a lepton partner mass of $\sim 110~{\rm GeV}$, for an integrated luminosity of $300~{\rm fb}^{-1}$, with a signal-to-background ratio of $\sim 0.3$. The LHC could exclude models with a lepton partner mass as large as $\sim 160~{\rm GeV}$ with the same luminosity. The use of machine learning techniques in searches for scalar lepton partners at the LHC could thus definitively probe the parameter space of the MSSM in which scalar muon mediated interactions between SM muons and Majorana singlet DM can both deplete the relic density through dark matter annihilation and satisfy the recently measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We present an analysis and numerical study of an optimal control problem for the Landau-de Gennes (LdG) model of nematic liquid crystals (LCs), which is a crucial component in modern technology. They exhibit long range orientational order in their nematic phase, which is represented by a tensor-valued (spatial) order parameter $Q = Q(x)$. Equilibrium LC states correspond to $Q$ functions that (locally) minimize an LdG energy functional. Thus, we consider an $L^2$-gradient flow of the LdG energy that allows for finding local minimizers and leads to a semi-linear parabolic PDE, for which we develop an optimal control framework. We then derive several a priori estimates for the forward problem, including continuity in space-time, that allow us to prove existence of optimal boundary and external ``force'' controls and to derive optimality conditions through the use of an adjoint equation. Next, we present a simple finite element scheme for the LdG model and a straightforward optimization algorithm. We illustrate optimization of LC states through numerical experiments in two and three dimensions that seek to place LC defects (where $Q(x) = 0$) in desired locations, which is desirable in applications., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

We introduce a new jet clustering algorithm named SIFT (Scale-Invariant Filtered Tree) that maintains the resolution of substructure for collimated decay products at large boosts. The scale-invariant measure combines properties of kT and anti-kT by preferring early association of soft radiation with a resilient hard axis, while avoiding the specification of a fixed cone size. Integrated filtering and variable-radius isolation criteria block assimilation of soft wide-angle radiation and provide a halting condition. Mutually hard structures are preserved to the end of clustering, automatically generating a tree of subjet axis candidates. Excellent object identification and kinematic reconstruction for multi-pronged resonances are realized across more than an order of magnitude in transverse energy. The clustering measure history facilitates high-performance substructure tagging, which we quantify with the aid of supervised machine learning. Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles whose non-volatility, detectability, and mobility make them exciting candidates for low-energy computing. Previous works have demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of current-driven skyrmions in cascaded logic structures inspired by reversible computing. As skyrmions can be propelled through the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect with much greater efficiency, this work proposes a VCMA-based skyrmion propagation mechanism that drastically reduces energy dissipation. Additionally, we demonstrate the functionality of skyrmion logic gates enabled by our novel voltage-based propagation and estimate its energy efficiency relative to other logic schemes. The minimum dissipation of this VCMA-driven magnetic skyrmion logic at 0 K is found to be $\sim$6$\times$ the room-temperature Landauer limit, indicating the potential for sub-Landauer dissipation through further engineering., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Nuclei of ordered materials emerging from the isotropic state usually show a shape topologically equivalent to a sphere; the well-known examples are crystals and nematic liquid crystal droplets. In this work, we explore experimentally and theoretically the nuclei of columnar lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal coexisting with the isotropic phase that are toroidal in shape. The geometry of toroids depends strongly on the molecular concentrations and presence of a crowding agent, polyethylene glycol. High concentrations result in thick toroids with small central holes, while low concentrations yield thin toroids with wide holes. The multitude of the observed shapes is explained by the balance of bending elasticity and anisotropic interfacial tension.

Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale whirls of magnetism that can be propagated with electrical currents. The repulsion between skyrmions inspires their use for reversible computing based on the elastic billiard ball collisions proposed for conservative logic in 1982. Here we evaluate the logical and physical reversibility of this skyrmion logic paradigm, as well as the limitations that must be addressed before dissipation-free computation can be realized.

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) is a process in which neutrinos scatter on a nucleus which acts as a single particle. Though the total cross section is large by neutrino standards, CE$\nu$NS has long proven difficult to detect, since the deposited energy into the nucleus is $\sim$ keV. In 2017, the COHERENT collaboration announced the detection of CE$\nu$NS using a stopped-pion source with CsI detectors, followed up the detection of CE$\nu$NS using an Ar target. The detection of CE$\nu$NS has spawned a flurry of activities in high-energy physics, inspiring new constraints on beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, and new experimental methods. The CE$\nu$NS process has important implications for not only high-energy physics, but also astrophysics, nuclear physics, and beyond. This whitepaper discusses the scientific importance of CE$\nu$NS, highlighting how present experiments such as COHERENT are informing theory, and also how future experiments will provide a wealth of information across the aforementioned fields of physics., Comment: contribution to Snowmasss 2021. We present a numerical method, based on a tensor order parameter description of a nematic phase, that allows fully anisotropic elasticity. Our method thus extends the Landau-de Gennes $\mathbf{Q}$-tensor theory to anisotropic phases. A microscopic model of the nematogen is introduced (the Maier-Saupe potential in the case discussed in this paper), combined with a constraint on eigenvalue bounds of $\mathbf{Q}$. This ensures a physically valid order parameter $\mathbf{Q}$ (i.e., the eigenvalue bounds are maintained), while allowing for more general gradient energy densities that can include cubic nonlinearities, and therefore elastic anisotropy. We demonstrate the method in two specific two dimensional examples in which the Landau-de Gennes model including elastic anisotropy is known to fail, as well as in three dimensions for the cases of a hedgehog point defect, a disclination line, and a disclination ring. Magnetic skyrmions are exciting candidates for energy-efficient computing due to their non-volatility, detectability,and mobility. A recent proposal within the paradigm of reversible computing enables large-scale circuits composed ofdirectly-cascaded skyrmion logic gates, but it is limited by the manufacturing difficulty and energy costs associated withthe use of notches for skyrmion synchronization. To overcome these challenges, we therefore propose a skyrmion logicsynchronized via modulation of voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA). In addition to demonstrating theprinciple of VCMA synchronization through micromagnetic simulations, we also quantify the impacts of current den-sity, skyrmion velocity, and anisotropy barrier height on skyrmion motion. Further micromagnetic results demonstratethe feasibility of cascaded logic circuits in which VCMA synchronizers enable clocking and pipelining, illustrating afeasible pathway toward energy-efficient large-scale computing systems based on magnetic skyrmions.

We explore the constraints which can be derived on Wilson coefficients in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory from dilepton production, notably including the constraints on operators which do not lead to cross sections growing with energy relative to the Standard Model rate, i.e. shifts. We incorporate essential theory error estimates from higher EFT orders in the analysis in order to provide robust bounds. We find that constraints on four-fermion operator contributions which do grow with energy are not materially weakened by the inclusion of these shifts, and that a constraint on the shifts can also be derived, with a characteristic strength comparable to, and a directionality in parameter space complementary to, those from LEP data. This completes the study of hadronically-quiet dilepton production in the SMEFT, and provides two new constraints which are linearly independent from others arising at the LHC and also rotated in Wilson coefficient space relative to, though not completely independent from, the LEP bounds., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

This chapter is about the modeling of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and their numerical simulation. We begin with an overview of the basic physics of LCs and discuss some of their many applications. Next, we delve into the modeling arguments needed to obtain macroscopic order parameters which can be used to formulate a continuum model. We then survey different continuum descriptions, namely the Oseen-Frank, Ericksen, and Landau-deGennes ($\mathbf{Q}$-tensor) models, which essentially model the LC material like an anisotropic elastic material. In particular, we review the mathematical theory underlying the three different continuum models and highlight the different trade-offs of using these models. Next, we consider the numerical simulation of these models with a survey of various methods, with a focus on the Ericksen model. We then show how techniques from the Ericksen model can be combined with the Landau-deGennes model to yield a $\mathbf{Q}$-tensor model that exactly enforces uniaxiality, which is relevant for modeling many nematic LC systems. This is followed by an in-depth numerical analysis, using tools from $\Gamma$-convergence, to justify our discrete method. We also show several numerical experiments and comparisons with the standard Landau-deGennes model.

We consider the one-constant Landau - de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals. The order parameter is a traceless tensor field $\mathbf{Q}$, which is constrained to be uniaxial: $\mathbf{Q} = s (\mathbf{n}\otimes\mathbf{n} - d^{-1} \mathbf{I})$ where $\mathbf{n}$ is a director field, $s\in\mathbb{R}$ is the degree of orientation, and $d\ge2$ is the dimension. Building on similarities with the one-constant Ericksen energy, we propose a structure-preserving finite element method for the computation of equilibrium configurations. We prove stability and consistency of the method without regularization, and $\Gamma$-convergence of the discrete energies towards the continuous one as the mesh size goes to zero. We design an alternating direction gradient flow algorithm for the solution of the discrete problems, and we show that such a scheme decreases the energy monotonically. Finally, we illustrate the method's capabilities by presenting some numerical simulations in two and three dimensions including non-orientable line fields.
