Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), thought to be produced during core-collapse supernovae, may have a prominent neutron component in the outflow material. If present, neutrons can change how photons scatter in the outflow by reducing its opacity, thereby allowing the photons to decouple sooner than if there were no neutrons present. Understanding the details of this process could therefore allow us to probe the central engine of LGRBs, which is otherwise hidden. Here, we present results of the photospheric emission from an LGRB jet, using a combination of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer post-processing using the Monte Carlo Radiation Transfer (MCRaT) code. We control the size of the neutron component in the jet material by varying the equilibrium electron fraction $Y_{e}$, and we find that the presence of neutrons in the GRB fireball affects the Band parameters $\alpha$ and $E_{0}$, while the picture with the $\beta$ parameter is less clear. In particular, the break energy $E_{0}$ is shifted to higher energies. Additionally, we find that increasing the size of the neutron component also increases the total radiated energy of the outflow across multiple viewing angles. Our results not only shed light on LGRBs, but are also relevant to short-duration gamma-ray bursts associated with binary neutron star mergers, due to the likelihood of a prominent neutron component in such systems.

The water and sewage industry has fundamental links to all aspects of sustainability, being responsible for delivering potable water and treating wastewater, a social necessity, which requires significant amounts of energy, physical infrastructure, and financial investment. By utilising benchmarking and performance analysis, companies can identify and prioritise areas for improvement and learn from best practices. This research embraces and expands on these themes over four main results chapters. Chapter 3 evaluates the economic and emission performance of UK and Irish water companies and identifies the key factors that affect their performance using a double-bootstrapped data envelopment analysis approach. That chapter found the companies could reduce economic and environmental inputs by 19.4% and 15.8% and provides an elementary framework to assess the influence of rurality on operational efficiency, applying it across a set of English and Welsh water companies. Chapter 4 again uses double-bootstrapped data envelopment analysis but evaluates the energy and economic efficiency of water (only), and water and sewerage, utilities in England and Wales, along with appraising the role of some rarely assessed explanatory factors. For example, results suggested that the proportion of water passing through the largest 50% of treatment works exhibited a significant negative effect on economic efficiency and average pumping head height had a significant negative effect for energy efficiency. Moreover, Chapter 4 determines the extent to which proxies may influence efficiency rankings and their determinant variables. Chapter 5 uses several sets of variables within the scope of the Hick-Moorsteen Productivity Index to examine the best approach for a comprehensive sustainability evaluation. Additionally, it investigates productivity change on a sample of UK water companies and disaggregates results for individual companies allowing an investigation of areas for improvement, indicating that the sample improved by 1.8% between 2014-18. Chapter 6 uses 350 companies from 42 countries to explore the energy intensity and reasons for varying performance of wastewater treatment on an international scale, using the most up-to-date data available and an effluent quality control to align performance. The global average electricity consumption for wastewater treatment was 0.89 kWh/m3 however, EU companies had the highest average energy intensity at 1.18 kWh/m3. Furthermore, Chapter 6 assesses the carbon impacts of energy intensities across regions and evaluates areas for improvement in international benchmarking practices. Collectively, the research presented in this thesis can be of use to water industry operators, regulators, benchmarking organisations, and academics by providing new insight into water-energy efficiency within the water sector, and by developing improved methodologies for efficiency benchmarking.

To fulfill their conservation potential and provide safeguards for biodiversity, marine protected areas (MPAs) need coordinated research and monitoring for informed management through effective evaluation of ecosystem dynamics. However, coordination is challenging, often due to knowledge gaps caused by inadequate access to data and resources, compounded by insufficient communication between scientists and managers. We propose to use the world's largest MPA in the Ross Sea, Antarctica as a model system to create a comprehensive framework for an interdisciplinary network supporting research and monitoring that could be implemented in other remote large‐scale international MPAs. Our proposed framework has three key components: (i) policy engagement, including delineation of policy needs and ecosystem metrics to assess MPA effectiveness; (ii) community partner engagement to elevate diverse voices, build trust, and share resources; and (iii) integrated science comprising three themes. These themes are: advancement of data science and cyberinfrastructure to facilitate data synthesis and sharing; biophysical modeling towards understanding ecosystem changes and uncertainties; and execution of observational and process studies to address uncertainties and evaluate ecosystem metrics. This proposed framework can improve MPA implementation by generating policy‐relevant science through this coordinated network, which can in turn improve MPA effectiveness in the Ross Sea and beyond. - Abstract
From the founding of Harvard College in 1636 as a mission for training young clergy to the landmark 1968 Supreme Court decision in "Epperson v. Arkansas," which struck down the state's ban on teaching evolution in schools, religion and education in the United States have been inextricably linked. Still today new fights emerge over the rights and limitations of religion in the classroom. "The Oxford Handbook of Religion and American Education" brings together preeminent scholars from the fields of religion, education, law, and political science to craft a comprehensive survey and assessment of the study of religion and education in the United States. The essays in the first part develop six distinct conceptual lenses through which to view American education, including Privatism, Secularism, Pluralism, Religious Literacy, Religious Liberty, and Democracy. The following four parts expand on these concepts in a diverse range of educational frames: public schools, faith-based K-12 education, higher education, and lifespan faith development. Designed for a diverse and interdisciplinary audience, this addition to the Oxford Handbook series sets for itself a broad goal of understanding the place of religion and education in a modern democracy. This book contains the following chapters: (1) Religion, Privatization, and American Educational Policy (Janet Bordelon); (2) Secularism and Religion in American Education (Jonathon S. MILD cognitive impairment ,COGNITIVE aging ,OLDER people ,NEUROLOGICAL disorders ,BARTONELLA - Abstract
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a neurological disorder at the transition between normal cognitive decline and dementia. Despite the potential role of neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis of MCI, infectious triggers remain mostly unknown. Infection with Bartonella spp., a zoonotic bacterium, has recently been associated with diffuse neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Given the preferential endothelial localization of Bartonella spp. and the role of vascular changes in neurocognitive decline, we hypothesized that there is an association between Bartonella spp. infection and pathologically accelerated decline in cognitive function in aging. To test this hypothesis, we collected serological and molecular markers of past and present Bartonella spp. infection in a sample of older people with and without MCI. Samples were processed in a blinded way to exclude laboratory biases. Contrary to our hypothesis, people with MCI were not more likely than people without MCI to have an active Bartonella spp. infection as measured by droplet digital PCR (p = 0.735) and quantitative PCR (p = 1). In addition, there was no significant difference in positive serological results between cases and controls (p = 0.461). Overall, higher-than-expected active Bartonella spp. infection (37% by ddPCR) and seroreactivity (71% by indirect fluorescent antibody assay) were found in people without MCI. Conclusions require caution, as our study was limited by the small number of cases with MCI. Overall, our results identified a higher than previously recognized rate of exposure and infection with Bartonella spp. in this older study population but does not support a specific role for such infection in MCI. 620 - Abstract
Chronic wounds present a major unmet clinical problem. They arise from wounds that fail to progress through the normal phases of healing due to factors that compound healing such as vascular complications, or diabetes. Despite improvements in treatments for difficult wounds, the incidence of limb amputation remains high. Therefore there is a need for more active therapies. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the capacity to differentiate into multiple cell-types, however they have also been shown to release a plethora of growth factors and cytokines which are beneficial to wound healing, consequently MSCs have shown to improve wound healing outcomes in a predominantly paracrine fashion. MSCs, for example, can increase angiogenesis/ neovascularisation, modulate inflammatory responses, accelerate re-epithelialisation, and increase collagen deposition. The first objective of the work was to develop a synthetic material based delivery method for MSCs that could be used in the clinic. Plasma polymerisation was used to surface-functionalise medical grade silicone with acrylic acid. The acid surface chemistry enhanced cell attachment to the silicone, and cells could effectively be transferred from the silicone to model wound beds comprised of decellularised dermis (DED). Once the cells were delivered they remained viable, and the acrylic acid surface chemistry was found not to affect the MSC phenotype or their functional capacity prior to cell delivery. The second part of the project involved developing a 3-D wound model using tissue-engineered (TE) skin, in which to assess the benefit of MSCs, and applying non-invasive imaging to monitor wound healing using optical coherence tomography (OCT). TE skin is reconstructed from DED by the addition of laboratory expanded fibroblasts and keratinocytes, and it possesses a functional epithelium. Full-thickness incisional wounds were created in TE skin, and fibrin clots containing cells could be inserted into the wound cavity; wounds healed after 14 days. OCT could clearly identity structural features of skin (including the dermis, epidermis and fibrin clot) with good correspondence to histology. Appropriate sampling of the wounds by OCT was determined, and consistency in identifying corresponding wound regions within a sample over time was addressed, so that wound volumes could be calculated and compared. Finally MSCs were introduced to the wound model. MSCs were found not to reduce the rate of wound closure in the dermal portion of the wound, however they did accelerate re-epithelialisation and this was detectable by OCT. Additionally, cytokine analysis was performed on the surrounding medium under wound conditions. In the presence of MSCs, wound medium contained more hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Elevated levels of these beneficial factors to wound healing were associated with an early onset of epithelialisation.
