Incorporation of strong electron correlations into the density functional theory (DFT) for the electronic structure calculations of light lanthanides leads to a modification of interatomic forces and consequently the lattice dynamics. Using first-principles theory we demonstrate the substantial influence of the 4f electron correlations on the phonon dispersion relations of Nd. The calculations are verified by an inelastic x-ray scattering experiment performed on a single-crystalline Nd(0001) film. We show that very good agreement between the calculated and measured data is achieved when electron-electron interactions are treated by the DFT+U approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a systematic lattice dynamics study of EuSi2 films and nanoislands by in situ nuclear inelastic scattering on 151Eu and ab initio theory. The Eu-partial phonon density of states of the nanoislands exhibits anomalous excess of phonon states at low and high energies, not present in the bulk and at the EuSi2(001) surface. We demonstrate that atomic vibrations along the island-substrate interface give rise to phonon states both at low and high energies, while atomic vibrations across the island-island interface result in localized high-energy phonon modes. Transient nigrostriatal dopaminergic signalling is well known for its role in reinforcement learning and increasingly so for its role in the initiation of voluntary movement. However, how transient bursts of dopamine modulate voluntary movement remains unclear, likely due to the heterogeneity of the nigrostriatal system, the focus of optogenetic studies on locomotion at sub-sec time intervals, and the overlapping roles of phasic dopamine in behaviour and novelty signalling. In this study we investigated how phasic activity in the lateral substantia nigra pars compacta (lateral SNc) over time affects voluntary behaviours during exploration. Using a transgenic mouse model of both sexes expressing channelrhodopsin (ChR2) in dopamine transporter-expressing cells, we stimulated the lateral SNc while mice explored an open field over two consecutive days. We found that phasic activation of the lateral SNc induced an increase in exploratory behaviours including horizontal movement activity, locomotion initiation, and rearing specifically on the first open field exposure, but not on the second day. In addition, stimulated animals did not habituate to the same extent as their ChR2-negative counterparts, as indicated by a lack of decrease in baseline activity. These findings suggest that rather than prompting voluntary movement in general, phasic nigrostriatal dopamine prompts context-appropriate behaviours. Alloying in group V 2D materials and heterostructures is an effective degree of freedom to tailor and enhance their physical properties. Up to date, black arsenic-phosphorus is the only 2D group V alloy that has been experimentally achieved by exfoliation, leaving all other possible alloys in the realm of theoretical predictions. Herein, the existence of an additional alloy consisting of 2D antimony arsenide (2D-As x Sb 1- x ) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on group IV semiconductor substrates and graphene is demonstrated. The atomic mixing of As and Sb in the lattice of the grown 2D layers is confirmed by low-energy electron diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The As content in 2D-As x Sb 1- x is shown to depend linearly on the As 4 /Sb 4 deposition rate ratio and As concentrations up to 15 at% are reached. The grown 2D alloys are found to be stable in ambient conditions in a timescale of weeks but to oxidize after longer exposure to air. Reducing the material sizes to the nanometer length scale leads to drastic modifications of the propagating lattice excitations (phonons) and their interactions with electrons and magnons. In EuO, a promising material for spintronic applications in which a giant spin-phonon interaction is present, this might imply a reduction of the degree of spin polarization in thin films. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics and spin-phonon interaction in EuO films is necessary for practical applications. We report a systematic lattice dynamics study of ultrathin EuO(001) films using nuclear inelastic scattering on the Mössbauer-active isotope 151Eu and first-principles theory. The films were epitaxially grown on YAlO3(110), which induces a tensile strain of ca. 2%. By reducing the EuO layer thickness from 8 nm to a sub-monolayer coverage, the Eu-partial phonon density of states (PDOS) reveals a gradual enhancement of the number of low-energy phonon states and simultaneous broadening and suppression of the peaks. These deviations from bulk features lead to significant anomalies in the vibrational thermodynamic and elastic properties calculated from the PDOS. The experimental results, supported by first-principles theory, unveil a reduction of the strength of the spin-phonon interaction in the tensile-strained EuO by a factor of four compared to a strain-free lattice.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have recently been introduced as versatile building blocks for a variety of novel nanoscale and quantum technologies. Harnessing the unique properties of these heterostructures requires a deep understanding of the involved interfacial interactions and a meticulous control of the growth of 2D materials on weakly interacting surfaces. Although several epitaxial vdW heterostructures have been achieved experimentally, the mechanisms governing their synthesis are still nebulous. With this perspective, herein, the growth dynamics of antimonene on graphene are investigated in real time. In situ low-energy electron microscopy reveals that nucleation predominantly occurs on 3D nuclei followed by a self-limiting lateral growth with morphology sensitive to the deposition rate. Large 2D layers are observed at high deposition rates, whereas lower growth rates trigger an increased multilayer nucleation at the edges as they become aligned with the Z2 orientation leading to atoll-like islands with thicker, well-defined bands. This complexity of the vdW growth is elucidated based on the interplay between the growth rate, surface diffusion, and edges orientation.
