Spatial predictions of total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations and stocks are crucial for understanding marine sediments’ role as a significant carbon sink in the global carbon cycle. In this study, we present a geospatial prediction of TOC concentrations and stocks at a 5 x 5 arc minute grid scale, using a deep learning model — a novel machine learning approach based on a new compilation of over 22,000 global TOC measurements and a new set of predictors, such as seafloor lithologies, grain size distribution, and an alpha-chlorophyll satellite data. In our study, we compared the predictions and discuss the limitations from various machine learning methods. Our findings reveal that the neural network approach outperforms methods such as k Nearest Neighbors and random forests, which tend to overfit to the training data, especially in highly heterogeneous and complex geological settings. We provide estimates of mean TOC concentrations and total carbon stock in both continental shelves and deep sea settings across various marine regions and oceans. Our model suggests that the upper 10 cm of oceanic sediments harbors approximately 171 Pg of TOC stock and has a mean TOC concentration of 0.68 %. Furthermore, we introduce a standardized methodology for quantifying predictive uncertainty using Monte Carlo dropout and present a map of information gain, that measures the expected increase in model knowledge achieved through in-situ sampling at specific locations which is pivotal for sampling strategy planning.

The Skagerrak basin represents the main sink area for fine-grained sediment in the North Sea region and constitutes a natural deposition centre for sediments that are supplied from the Atlantic, the Baltic Sea and the surrounding continental margins and coasts. However, the exact sources and their proportional contributions to the North Sea sediments and to the Skagerrak deposits are not well understood.To trace the predominant sources of the sediment and to gain a better understanding of the sedimentary processes in the North Sea and the Skagerrak basin, radiogenic Sr, Nd, and Hf isotope signatures and clay mineral compositions of the detrital clay fraction of surface sediment samples from the North Sea, the Scandinavian margins and the Baltic Sea were measured.The results indicate that the major source for Skagerrak clay-size sediments is the northern North Sea but Scandinavia as well as the southern North Sea including the southern England coast also contribute material. Seabed and coastal erosion in the northern North Sea are enhanced by the inflowing Atlantic Currents, which provide the Skagerrak with high amounts of clay size sediments. In contrast, the southern North Sea, the Baltic Sea and mid-European rivers such as Weser, Elbe and Ems are only minor contributors. As Skagerrak deposits are dominated by clay sized material (up to 60%), the reconstructed sediment processes related to this study deviate from findings in previous sediment budget studies, which were based on both clay and silt fraction and indicated predominant influences from the southern North Sea. These results highlight that coastal and seabed erosion in the North Sea is a previously underestimated source of fine-grained sediments for depocenters in the entire North Sea.With regard to climate change, the global sea-level rise will likely enhance erosional processes and can therefore significantly influence the sediment budget of the entire North Sea.

This chapter provides an overview of near-surface geochemical processes operating on Earth, with special emphasis placed on (i) marine weathering such as alteration and dissolution of silicates, carbonates and terrigenous riverine particles in the ocean, complemented by (ii) reverse weathering reactions leading to marine authigenic clay formation, and the impact of these phenomena on ocean alkalinity budget and the chemical and isotope composition of seawater. Model simulations of the above processes provide estimates of the global marine fluxes of major cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and alkalinity in the ocean induced by silicate weathering and dissolution of terrigenous material in seawater. Additional constraints on silicate vs. carbonate weathering, oceanic/coastal CaCO3 cycling, and paleo-seawater reconstructions are provided via the stable and radiogenic isotope systems of alkali and alkaline earth metals (Li, K, Mg, Ca, and Sr isotopes) that are discussed within the context of marine and reverse weathering in the present and past ocean. In many natural science domains, scientific documents provide a very important source for fundamental measurements that have been recorded at various geo-spatial locations. Manually extracting these reported measurements and their location information from these documents is extremely tedious and expensive, necessitating an automatic approach. These documents, primarily accessible in PDF format, are designed for platform-independent viewing and printing rather than presenting content in a conveniently accessible structure, which poses a significant challenge for automatic extraction. Relevant records of measurements and location information are often provided in tables that are structured quite diversely regarding the number of (nested) rows and columns, table orientation and depend on the article template and the author’s style of presentation. In this paper, we propose a framework that, to the best of our knowledge, is the first generic approach that focuses on automatic location information and measurement extraction from tables in PDF documents. Based on various publications of arbitrary format from Marine Geology, we showcase how to segregate both spatial and quantitative measurement information, which alongside respective metadata could answer numerous pertinent questions about values of SR (Sedimentation Rate) and MAR (Mass Accumulation Rate) at specific locations, who measured these values, and referenced information (identifier) to these locations. Our proposed framework also validates the extracted information from scientific publications. Finally, all the aggregated information constitutes a novel Marine Geology Gazetteer and offers an interactive visualization.

Sediment fluxes to the seafloor govern the fate of elements and compounds in the ocean and serve as a prerequisite for research on elemental cycling, benthic processes and sediment management strategies. To quantify these fluxes over seafloor areas, it is necessary to scale up sediment mass accumulation rates (MAR) obtained from multiple sample stations. Conventional methods for spatial upscaling involve averaging of data or spatial interpolation. However, these approaches may not be sufficiently precise to account for spatial variations of MAR, leading to poorly constrained regional sediment budgets. Here, we utilize a machine learning approach to scale up porosity and 210 Pb data from 145 and 65 stations, respectively, in the Skagerrak. The models predict the spatial distributions by considering several predictor variables that are assumed to control porosity and 210 Pb rain rates. The spatial distribution of MAR is based on the predicted porosity and existing sedimentation rate data. Our findings reveal highest MAR and 210 Pb rain rates to occur in two parallel belt structures that align with the general circulation pattern in the Skagerrak. While high 210 Pb rain rates occur in intermediate water depths, the belt of high MAR is situated closer to the coastlines due to lower porosities at shallow water depths. Based on the spatial distributions, we calculate a total MAR of 34.7 Mt yr -1 and a 210 Pb rain rate of 4.7 · 10 14 dpm yr -1 . By comparing atmospheric to total 210 Pb rain rates, we further estimate that 24% of the 210 Pb originates from the local atmospheric input, with the remaining 76% being transported laterally into the Skagerrak. The updated MAR in the Skagerrak is combined with literature data on other major sediment sources and sinks to present a tentative sediment budget for the North Sea, which reveals an imbalance with sediment outputs exceeding the inputs. The greenhouse gas methane (CH4) contributed to a warm climate that maintained liquid water and sustained Earth’s habitability in the Precambrian despite the faint young sun. The viability of methanogenesis (ME) in ferruginous environments, however, is debated, as iron reduction can potentially outcompete ME as a pathway of organic carbon remineralization (OCR). Here, we document that ME is a dominant OCR process in Brownie Lake, Minnesota (midwestern United States), which is a ferruginous (iron-rich, sulfate-poor) and meromictic (stratified with permanent anoxic bottom waters) system. We report ME accounting for ≥90% and >9% ± 7% of the anaerobic OCR in the water column and sediments, respectively, and an overall particulate organic carbon loading to CH4 conversion efficiency of ≥18% ± 7% in the anoxic zone of Brownie Lake. Our results, along with previous reports from ferruginous systems, suggest that even under low primary productivity in Precambrian oceans, the efficient conversion of organic carbon would have enabled marine CH4 to play a major role in early Earth’s biogeochemical evolution.

What action should we take for the effective mitigation of climate change? Measures to avoid greenhouse gas emissions are surely the main priority – but the truth is that in the coming decades, we will also have to remove large quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it securely. Can – indeed, should – the ocean aid us in this task? The new World Ocean Review (WOR 8) explores this issue with reference to the oceans' role in the Earth's carbon cycle and looks at the benefits, risks and knowledge gaps around the main marine carbon dioxide removal techniques.

Es werden mögliche Beiträge geologischer und mariner Kohlenstoffspeicher für die Vermeidung von CO2-Emissionen in die Atmosphäre oder für die Entnahme von bereits emittiertem CO2 aus der Atmosphäre vorgestellt. Neben der Einlagerung von CO2 in geologischen Speichern unter Land und unter dem Meeresboden werden eine forcierte CO2-Entnahme aus der Atmosphäre und Abgabe in den Ozean durch Erhöhung der Alkalinität, durch Ozeandüngung und durch das Management vegetationsreicher Küstenökosysteme untersucht. Alle Optionen können sowohl global als auch aus deutscher Perspektive eine Rolle für das Erreichen der Klimaziele spielen. Umweltverträglichkeit, Permanenz der Speicherung sowie infrastrukturelle und rechtliche Voraussetzungen, gesellschaftliche Akzeptanz und wirtschaftliche Realisierbarkeit bedürfen für alle Ansätze weiterer Klärung, bevor hieraus realisierbare Optionen werden können.

Numerous studies have shown that riverine particles react with seawater. Reactions include dissolution of reactive silicate minerals (e.g., feldspars) and formation of authigenic clays and carbonates. Previous studies have either focused on mineral dissolution (marine silicate weathering) or authigenic phase formation (reverse weathering). A comprehensive study that assesses all processes affecting the marine alteration of riverine particle has -to our knowledge- not yet been conducted. Our contribution aims to fill this gap. We first quantify cation exchange between seawater and riverine particles that occurs when particles enter the marine realm and show that significant global cation fluxes are induced by this process (-1.3 Tmol Na yr-1, -0.2 Tmol K yr-1, -0.4 Tmol Mg yr-1, +1.2 Tmol Ca yr-1) where the positive sign indicates cation release into seawater while the negative sign denotes uptake on particles. We then use thermodynamic and kinetic modeling to investigate how much of the suspended particle load dissolves in contact with seawater and estimate corresponding global release rates for dissolved cations and silica assuming congruent dissolution (+0.06 Tmol Na yr-1, +0.15 Tmol Ca yr-1, +2.8 Tmol Si yr-1). Subsequently, we investigate rates of mineral dissolution and authigenic clay and carbonate formation in marine sediments applying reactive transport modeling, porewater data and mass balance calculations. Our best estimates for net fluxes across the sediment/water interface (dissolution–mineral formation) result as +1.5 Tmol Na yr-1, -2.5 Tmol K yr-1, -2.0 Tmol Mg yr-1, +2.5 Tmol Ca yr-1, and +1.9 Tmol Si yr-1 where most of the Na and Ca release is induced by plagioclase dissolution, K is taken up in authigenic clays and Mg is removed from solution by authigenic clay and carbonate formation.
