This summary of the second Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry (TVLBAI) Workshop provides a comprehensive overview of our meeting held in London in April 2024, building on the initial discussions during the inaugural workshop held at CERN in March 2023. Like the summary of the first workshop, this document records a critical milestone for the international atom interferometry community. It documents our concerted efforts to evaluate progress, address emerging challenges, and refine strategic directions for future large-scale atom interferometry projects. The rotation of trapped molecules offers a promising platform for quantum technologies and quantum information processing. In parallel, quantum error correction codes that can protect quantum information encoded in rotational states of a single molecule have been developed. These codes are currently an abstract concept, as no implementation strategy is yet known. Here, we present a step towards experimental implementation of one family of such codes, namely absorption-emission codes. We first construct architecture-agnostic check and correction operators. These operators are then decomposed into elements of the quantum logic spectroscopy toolbox that is available for molecular ions. We then describe and analyze a measurement-based sequential as well as an autonomous implementation strategy in the presence of thermal background radiation, a major noise source for rotation in polar molecules. Molecular ions that are generated by chemical reactions with trapped atomic ions can serve as an accessible testbed for developing molecular quantum technologies. On the other hand, they are also a hindrance to scaling up quantum computers based on atomic ions as unavoidable reactions with background gas destroy the information carriers. Here, we investigate the single- and two-photon dissociation processes of single $\text{CaOH}^+$ molecular ions co-trapped in $\text{Ca}^+$ ion crystals using a femtosecond laser system. We report the photodissociation cross section spectra of $\text{CaOH}^+$ for single-photon processes at $\lambda=$245 - 275$\,$nm and for two-photon processes at $\lambda=$500 - 540$\,$nm. Measurements are interpreted with quantum-chemical calculations, which predict the photodissociation threshold for $\text{CaOH}^+\to \text{Ca}^++\text{OH}$ at 265$\,$nm. This result can serve as a basis for dissociation-based spectroscopy for studying the internal structure of $\text{CaOH}^+$. The result also gives a prescription for recycling $\text{Ca}^+$ ions in large-scale trapped $\text{Ca}^+$ quantum experiments from undesired $\text{CaOH}^+$ ions formed in the presence of background water vapor., Comment: 13 pages, 18 figures

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. We investigate the intra-waveguide statistics manipulation of broadband light by combining semiconductor quantum dot physics with quantum optics. By cooling a quantum dot superluminescent diode to liquid nitrogen temperature of $77K$, Blazek et al. [Phys. Rev. A 84, 63840 (2011)] have demonstrated a temperature-dependent reduction of the second-order intensity correlation coefficient from two for thermal amplified spontaneous emission light to $g^{(2)}(T=190 K)\approx 1.33$. Here, we model the broadband photon statistics assuming amplified spontaneous emission radiation in a pumped, saturable quantum dot gain medium. We demonstrate that, by an intensity increase due to the quantum dot occupation dynamics via the temperature-tuned quasi Fermi levels, together with the saturation nonlinearity, a statistics manipulation from thermal Bose-Einstein statistics towards Poissonian statistics can be realized, thus producing "silent white light". Such intensity-noise reduced broadband radiation is relevant for many applications like optical coherence tomography, optical communication or optical tweezers.

A physical artificial complex-valued neuron is formed by four-wave mixing in a homogeneous three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Bragg beamsplitter pulses prepare superpositions of three plane-waves states as an input- and the fourth wave as an output signal. The nonlinear dynamics of the non-degenerate four-wave mixing process leads to Josephson-like oscillations within the closed four-dimensional subspace and defines the activation function of a neuron. Due to the high number of symmetries, closed form solutions can be found by quadrature and agree with numerical simulation. The ideal behaviour of an isolated four-wave mixing setup is compared to a situation with additional population of rogue states. We observe a robust persistence of the main oscillation. As an application for neural learning of this physical system, we train it on the XOR problem. After $100$ training epochs, the neuron responds to input data correctly at the $10^{-5}$ error level.

Technical optics with matter waves requires a universal description of three-dimensional traps, lenses, and complex matter-wave fields. In analogy to the two-dimensional Zernike expansion in beam optics, we present a three-dimensional multipole expansion for Bose-condensed matter waves and optical devices. We characterize real magnetic chip traps, optical dipole traps, and the complex matter-wave field in terms of spherical harmonics and radial Stringari polynomials. We illustrate this procedure for typical harmonic model potentials as well as real magnetic and optical dipole traps. Eventually, we use the multipole expansion to characterize the aberrations of a ballistically interacting expanding Bose-Einstein condensate in (3+1)-dimensions. In particular, we find deviations from the quadratic phase ansatz in the popular scaling approximation. This universal multipole description of aberrations can be used to optimize matter-wave optics setups, for example in matter-wave interferometers.

Urine output is a vital parameter to gauge kidney health. Current monitoring methods include manually written records, invasive urinary catheterization or ultrasound measurements performed by highly skilled personnel. Catheterization bears high risks of infection while intermittent ultrasound measures and manual recording are time consuming and might miss early signs of kidney malfunction. Bioimpedance (BI) measurements may serve as a non-invasive alternative for measuring urine volume in vivo. However, limited robustness have prevented its clinical translation. Here, a deep learning-based algorithm is presented that processes the local BI of the lower abdomen and suppresses artefacts to measure the bladder volume quantitatively, non-invasively and without the continuous need for additional personnel. A tetrapolar BI wearable system called ANUVIS was used to collect continuous bladder volume data from three healthy subjects to demonstrate feasibility of operation, while clinical gold standards of urodynamic (n=6) and uroflowmetry tests (n=8) provided the ground truth. Optimized location for electrode placement and a model for the change in BI with changing bladder volume is deduced. The average error for full bladder volume estimation and for residual volume estimation was -29 +/-87.6 ml, thus, comparable to commercial portable ultrasound devices (Bland Altman analysis showed a bias of -5.2 ml with LoA between 119.7 ml to -130.1 ml), while providing the additional benefit of hands-free, non-invasive, and continuous bladder volume estimation. The combination of the wearable BI sensor node and the presented algorithm provides an attractive alternative to current standard of care with potential benefits in providing insights into kidney function.

This book is the result of a seminar in which we reviewed multimodal approaches and attempted to create a solid overview of the field, starting with the current state-of-the-art approaches in the two subfields of Deep Learning individually. Further, modeling frameworks are discussed where one modality is transformed into the other, as well as models in which one modality is utilized to enhance representation learning for the other. To conclude the second part, architectures with a focus on handling both modalities simultaneously are introduced. Finally, we also cover other modalities as well as general-purpose multi-modal models, which are able to handle different tasks on different modalities within one unified architecture. One interesting application (Generative Art) eventually caps off this booklet.

Single photon emitters in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are promising solid-state quantum emitters for photonic applications and quantum networks. Despite their favorable properties, much is still unknown about their characteristics and their atomic origin. We focus on two different kinds of hBN samples that particularly lend themselves for integration with nanophotonic devices, multilayer nanoflakes produced by liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) and a layer-engineered sample from hBN grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD). We investigate their inherent defects and fit their emission properties to computationally simulated optical properties of likely carbon-related defects. Thereby we compare and elucidate the properties in different sample types particularly suited for photonic quantum networks and narrow down the origin of emitters found in these samples. Our work is thus an important step towards harnessing the full potential of single photon emitters in hBN.

We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Doppler-free three-photon coherence effects at a wavelength of 253.7 nm have been observed in thermal mercury vapor. The experimental results are compared to simulations based on a detailed theoretical model reproducing the measured effects. Based on these results, we show by simulations that amplification without inversion in our setup is feasible, paving the way towards lasing without inversion in mercury., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We present time-series spectroscopy and photometry of Gaia DR2 6097540197980557440, a new deeply-eclipsing hot subdwarf B (sdB) + M dwarf (dM) binary. We discovered this object during the course of the Eclipsing Reflection Effect Binaries from Optical Surveys (EREBOS) project, which aims to find new eclipsing sdB+dM binaries (HW Vir systems) and increase the small sample of studied systems. In addition to the primary eclipse, which is in excess of $\sim$5 magnitudes in the optical, the light curve also shows features typical for other HW Vir binaries such as a secondary eclipse and strong reflection effect from the irradiated, cool companion. The orbital period is 0.127037 d ($\sim$3 hr), falling right at the peak of the orbital period distribution of known HW Vir systems. Analysis of our time-series spectroscopy yields a radial velocity semi-amplitude of $K_{\rm sdB}=100.0\pm2.0\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$, which is amongst the fastest line-of-sight velocities found to date for an HW Vir binary. State-of-the-art atmospheric models that account for deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium are used to determine the atmospheric parameters of the sdB. Although we cannot claim a unique light curve modeling solution, the best-fitting model has an sdB mass of $M_{\rm sdB} = 0.47\pm0.03\,M_{\odot}$ and a companion mass of $M_{\rm dM} = 0.18\pm0.01\,M_{\odot}$. The radius of the companion appears to be inflated relative to theoretical mass-radius relationships, consistent with other known HW Vir binaries. We analyze the transfer function of a three-dimensional atomic Bragg beamsplitter formed by two counterpropagating pulsed Gaussian laser beams. Even for ultracold atomic ensembles, the transfer efficiency depends significantly on the residual velocity of the particles as well as on losses into higher diffraction orders. Additional aberrations are caused by the spatial intensity variation and wavefront curvature of the Gaussian beam envelope, studied with (3+1)D numerical simulations. The temporal pulse shape also affects the transfer efficiency significantly. Thus, we consider the practically important rectangular-, Gaussian-, Blackman- and hyperbolic secant pulses. For the latter, we can describe the time-dependent response analytically with the Demkov-Kunike method. The experimentally observed stretching of the $\pi$-pulse time is explained from a renormalization of the simple Pendell\"osung frequency. Finally, we compare the analytical predictions for the velocity-dependent transfer function with effective (1+1)D numerical simulations for pulsed Gaussian beams, as well as experimental data and find very good agreement, considering a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate and thermal cloud., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

We present a stochastic procedure to investigate the correlation spectra of quantum dot superluminescent diodes. The classical electric field of a diode is formed by a polychromatic superposition of many independent stochastic oscillators. Assuming fields with individual carrier frequencies, Lorentzian linewidths and amplitudes we can form any relevant experimental spectrum using a least square fit. This is illustrated for Gaussian and Lorentzian spectra, Voigt profiles and box shapes. Eventually, the procedure is applied to an experimental spectrum of a quantum dot superluminescent diode which determines the first- and second-order temporal correlation functions of the emission. We find good agreement with the experimental data and a quantized treatment. Thus, a stochastic field represents broadband light emitted by quantum dot superluminescent diodes., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

This paper presents and validates active interaction force control and planning for fully actuated and omnidirectional aerial manipulation platforms, with the goal of aerial contact inspection in unstructured environments. We present a variable axis-selective impedance control which integrates direct force control for intentional interaction, using feedback from an on-board force sensor. The control approach aims to reject disturbances in free flight, while handling unintentional interaction, and actively controlling desired interaction forces. A fully actuated and omnidirectional tilt-rotor aerial system is used to show capabilities of the control and planning methods. Experiments demonstrate disturbance rejection, push-and-slide interaction, and force controlled interaction in different flight orientations. The system is validated as a tool for non-destructive testing of concrete infrastructure, and statistical results of, Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures

The velocity distribution of a hot ionic beam can be filtered with a narrow stimulated Raman process to prepare a colder subensemble, as substantiated in this theoretical analysis. Using two counter-propagating, far-detuned lasers, we can define a $\pi$-pulse for the resonant velocity to transfer atoms within the linewidth of the Raman resonance between the ground-states of a $\Lambda$-system. Spontaneous emission from the two single-photon resonances, as well as the ground-state decoherence induced by laser noise, diminishes the efficiency of the filter. From a comprehensive master equation, we obtain conditions for the optimal frequency pair of the lasers and evaluate the filter performance numerically, as well as analytically. If we apply this analysis to current $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion experiments, we obtain a sensitivity for measuring high ion acceleration voltages on the ppm level or below., Comment: Corrected typos. We have conducted a survey of candidate hot subdwarf stars in the southern sky searching for fast transits, eclipses, and sinusoidal like variability in the Evryscope light curves. The survey aims to detect transit signals from Neptune size planets to gas-giants, and eclipses from M-dwarfs and brown dwarfs. The other variability signals are primarily expected to be from compact binaries and reflection effect binaries. Due to the small size of hot subdwarfs, transit and eclipse signals are expected to last only twenty minutes, but with large signal depths (up to completely eclipsing if the orientation is edge on). With its 2-minute cadence and continuous observing Evryscope is well placed to recover these fast transits and eclipses. The very large field of view (8150 sq. deg.) is critical to obtain enough hot subdwarf targets, despite their rarity. We identified 11,000 potential hot subdwarfs from the 9.3M Evryscope light curves for sources brighter than mg = 15. With our machine learning spectral classifier, we flagged high-confidence targets and estimate the total hot subdwarfs in the survey to be 1400. The light curve search detected three planet transit candidates, shown to have stellar companions from followup analysis. We discovered several new compact binaries (including two with unseen degenerate companions, and several others with potentially rare secondaries), two eclipsing binaries with M-dwarf companions, as well as new reflection effect binaries and others with sinusoidal like variability. The hot subdwarf discoveries identified here are spectroscopically confirmed and we verified the Evryscope discovery light curve with TESS light curves when available. The precise determination of the position of point-like emitters and scatterers using far-field optical imaging techniques is of utmost importance for a wide range of applications in medicine, biology, astronomy, and physics. Although the optical wavelength sets a fundamental limit to the image resolution of unknown objects, the position of an individual emitter can in principle be estimated from the image with arbitrary precision. This is used, e.g., in stars' position determination and in optical super-resolution microscopy. Furthermore, precise position determination is an experimental prerequisite for the manipulation and measurement of individual quantum systems, such as atoms, ions, and solid state-based quantum emitters. Here we demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling of light in the emission of elliptically polarized emitters can lead to systematic, wavelength-scale errors in the estimate of the emitter's position. Imaging a single trapped atom as well as a single sub-wavelength-diameter gold nanoparticle, we demonstrate a shift between the emitters' measured and actual positions which is comparable to the optical wavelength. Remarkably, for certain settings, the expected shift can become arbitrarily large. Regular nutrient intake monitoring in hospitalised patients plays a critical role in reducing the risk of disease-related malnutrition (DRM). Although several methods to estimate nutrient intake have been developed, there is still a clear demand for a more reliable and fully automated technique, as this could improve the data accuracy and reduce both the participant burden and the health costs. In this paper, we propose a novel system based on artificial intelligence to accurately estimate nutrient intake, by simply processing RGB depth image pairs captured before and after a meal consumption. For the development and evaluation of the system, a dedicated and new database of images and recipes of 322 meals was assembled, coupled to data annotation using innovative strategies. With this database, a system was developed that employed a novel multi-task neural network and an algorithm for 3D surface construction. This allowed sequential semantic food segmentation and estimation of the volume of the consumed food, and permitted fully automatic estimation of nutrient intake for each food type with a 15% estimation error., Comment: EMBC2019

We present a microscopic theory of the amplified spontaneous emission of a spectrally broadband quantum dot superluminescent diode within the quantum white noise limit. From this multimode quantum theory, we have the ability to obtain all orders of temporal correlation functions. In particular, we derive rate equations for the optical power densities, the level occupation of inhomogeneous ensemble of quantum dots within the diode, as well as the emitted optical spectra. As the main result, we find the external power spectrum as a convolution of the intra-diode photon spectrum with a Lorentzian response. Assuming a Gaussian light-matter coupling results in a similar shaped Gaussian output spectrum, which agrees very well with available experimental data.

This paper presents an omnidirectional aerial manipulation platform for robust and responsive interaction with unstructured environments, toward the goal of contact-based inspection. The fully actuated tilt-rotor aerial system is equipped with a rigidly mounted end-effector, and is able to exert a 6 degree of freedom force and torque, decoupling the system's translational and rotational dynamics, and enabling precise interaction with the environment while maintaining stability. An impedance controller with selective apparent inertia is formulated to permit compliance in certain degrees of freedom while achieving precise trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection in others. Experiments demonstrate disturbance rejection, push-and-slide interaction, and on-board state estimation with depth servoing to interact with local surfaces. We study optical pulse propagation through a hollow-core fiber filled with a radially inhomogeneous cloud of cold atoms. A co-propagating control field establishes electromagnetically induced transparency. In analogy to a graded index fiber, the pulse experiences micro-lensing and the transmission spectrum becomes distorted. Based on a two-layer model of the complex index of refraction, we can analytically understand the cause of the aberration, which is corroborated by numerical simulations for a radial Gaussian-shaped function. Space offers virtually unlimited free-fall in gravity. Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) enables ineffable low kinetic energies corresponding to pico- or even femtokelvins. The combination of both features makes atom interferometers with unprecedented sensitivity for inertial forces possible and opens a new era for quantum gas experiments. On January 23, 2017, we created Bose-Einstein condensates in space on the sounding rocket mission MAIUS-1 and conducted 110 experiments central to matter-wave interferometry. In particular, we have explored laser cooling and trapping in the presence of large accelerations as experienced during launch, and have studied the evolution, manipulation and interferometry employing Bragg scattering of BECs during the six-minute space flight. In this letter, we focus on the phase transition and the collective dynamics of BECs, whose impact is magnified by the extended free-fall time. Our experiments demonstrate a high reproducibility of the manipulation of BECs on the atom chip reflecting the exquisite control features and the robustness of our experiment. These properties are crucial to novel protocols for creating quantum matter with designed collective excitations at the lowest kinetic energy scales close to femtokelvins., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures
