1. Kinetic Corrections to Heat-flow and Nernst advection for Laser Heated Plasmas

Abstract

Reduced models for approximating the impact of kinetic electron behavior on the transport of thermal energy and magnetic field are investigated. The thermal flux limiter has improved agreement with Vlasov-Fokker-Planck data when a harmonic form is used that adjusts the electron mean free path to account for electron-electron collisions; these results apply to both unmagnetized and magnetized plasmas. Once a magnetic field is incorporated, the mean free path should also be modified using the electron gyroradius. A flux limiter on Nernst advection of magnetic field is also required; a form that limits Nernst by the same fraction as the thermal heat-flow best reproduces kinetic simulations. A flux limiter form for the cross terms (Righi-Leduc and cross-gradient-Nernst) are also suggested. Hohlraum simulations relevant to fusion experiments on the National Ignition Facility are found to be sensitive to all of these details.

Abstract

Multimodal self-supervised representation learning has consistently proven to be a highly effective method in medical image analysis, offering strong task performance and producing biologically informed insights. However, these methods heavily rely on large, paired datasets, which is prohibitive for their use in scenarios where paired data does not exist, or there is only a small amount available. In contrast, image generation methods can work well on very small datasets, and can find mappings between unpaired datasets, meaning an effectively unlimited amount of paired synthetic data can be generated. In this work, we demonstrate that representation learning can be significantly improved by synthetically generating paired information, both compared to training on either single-modality (up to 4.4x error reduction) or authentic multi-modal paired datasets (up to 5.6x error reduction).

3. Unleashing Adult Learners' Numeracy Agency through Self-Determined Online Professional Development

Abstract

Opportunities for self-determined online professional development (OPD) are emerging, but their potential for increasing adult learners' agency is not yet fully realised. Faced with the problem of successfully designing a self-determined comprehensive evidence-based online numeracy resource for educators who are often time poor and do not engage with online learning unless they are intrinsically motivated, we engaged in design research to conceptualise the "Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide" for educators and families. The "Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide" fosters educators' and adult learners' numeracy capability across numeracy focus areas from birth to level 10 (16-year-olds). This extensive OPD resource incorporates consistent design elements, double-looped learning, nonlinear learning, self-reflection, and metacognition activities to foster educators' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) through experiential learning. With a section dedicated to families, the resource provides suggestions and advice to parents and carers on everyday, authentic activities to develop children and young people's numeracy understandings at home and in the local community. As education systems continue to grapple with the disruption brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the "Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide" is a timely, freely accessed, viable, and scalable option for providing low-cost OPD.

Abstract

Surgical scene segmentation is essential for anatomy and instrument localization which can be further used to assess tissue-instrument interactions during a surgical procedure. In 2017, the Challenge on Automatic Tool Annotation for cataRACT Surgery (CATARACTS) released 50 cataract surgery videos accompanied by instrument usage annotations. These annotations included frame-level instrument presence information. In 2020, we released pixel-wise semantic annotations for anatomy and instruments for 4670 images sampled from 25 videos of the CATARACTS training set. The 2020 CATARACTS Semantic Segmentation Challenge, which was a sub-challenge of the 2020 MICCAI Endoscopic Vision (EndoVis) Challenge, presented three sub-tasks to assess participating solutions on anatomical structure and instrument segmentation. Their performance was assessed on a hidden test set of 531 images from 10 videos of the CATARACTS test set.

18. Modification of classical electron transport due to collisions between electrons and fast ions

Abstract

A Fokker-Planck model for the interaction of fast ions with the thermal electrons in a quasi-neutral plasma is developed. When the fast ion population has a net flux (i.e. the distribution of the fast ions is anisotropic in velocity space) the electron distribution function is significantly perturbed from Maxwellian by collisions with the fast ions, even if the fast ion density is orders of magnitude smaller than the electron density. The Fokker-Planck model is used to derive classical electron transport equations (a generalized Ohm's law and a heat flow equation) that include the effects of the electron-fast ion collisions. It is found that these collisions result in a current term in the transport equations which can be significant even when total current is zero. The new transport equations are analyzed in the context of a number of scenarios including $\alpha$ particle heating in ICF and MIF plasmas and ion beam heating of dense plasmas.

21. Synthetic Nuclear Diagnostics for Inferring Plasma Properties of Inertial Confinement Fusion Implosions

Abstract

A suite of synthetic nuclear diagnostics has been developed to post-process radiation hydrodynamics simulations performed with the code Chimera. These provide experimental observables based on simulated capsule properties and are used to assess alternative experimental and data analysis techniques. These diagnostics include neutron spectroscopy, primary and scattered neutron imaging, neutron activation, $\gamma$-ray time histories and carbon $\gamma$-ray imaging. Novel features of the neutron spectrum have been analysed to infer plasma parameters. The nT and nD backscatter edges have been shown to provide a shell velocity measurement. Areal density asymmetries created by low mode perturbations have been inferred from the slope of the downscatter spectrum down to 10 MeV. Neutron activation diagnostics showed significant aliasing of high mode areal density asymmetries when observing a capsule implosion with 3D multimode perturbations applied. Carbon $\gamma$-ray imaging could be used to image the ablator at high convergence ratio. Time histories of both the fusion and carbon $\gamma$ signals showed a greater time difference between peak intensities for the perturbed case when compared to a symmetric simulation.

Abstract

We investigate opportunities offered by telematics and analytics to enable better informed, and more integrated, collaborative management decisions on construction sites. We focus on efficient refuelling of assets across construction sites. More specifically, we develop decision support models that, by leveraging data supplied by different assets, schedule refuelling operations by minimising the distance travelled by the bowser truck as well as fuel shortages. Motivated by a practical case study elicited in the context of a project we recently conducted at Crossrail, we introduce the Dynamic Bowser Routing Problem. In this problem the decision maker aims to dynamically refuel, by dispatching a bowser truck, a set of assets which consume fuel and whose location changes over time; the goal is to ensure that assets do not run out of fuel and that the bowser covers the minimum possible distance. We investigate deterministic and stochastic variants of this problem and introduce effective and scalable mathematical programming models to tackle these cases. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approaches in the context of an extensive computational study designed around data collected on site as well as supplied by our project partners. 24. A Public-Private Partnership to Transform Online Education through High Levels of Academic Student Support

Abstract

Online education often struggles to maintain a consistent, high quality academic experience. High attrition rates and low student satisfaction continue to challenge higher education providers. We present an innovative public-private partnership that delivers a resources-sufficient model of fully online postgraduate education with high levels of academic student support in an unbundled approach. The partnership overcomes the challenges that plague online education by leveraging learning analytics to provide highly responsive student support, 7 days a week and in the evenings. The success of this model is its ability to ameliorate problems inherent in online education. This includes the lack of ongoing staff training and support to successfully teach online, staff availability when students need support and insufficient staff-student ratios. As the sector moves towards a digitally integrated future, our model of online education illustrates how a public-private partnership can provide online learning that is effective as measured by high rates of student retention and transition, satisfaction, and academic success. We argue our resources-sufficient model provides a transformational roadmap for scaled online learning that creatively reimagines supported, personalised, engaged and student-centred digital learning as the sector moves towards a digitally integrated future.

25. Dynamic Approaches to Online Learning of Numeracy for Educators and Families

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted on schools globally with closures and the implementation of online learning (UNESCO, 2020). This rapid shift has resulted in a significant change to traditional modes of delivery, including classroom teaching and professional learning opportunities for teachers, as well as thinking differently about how families can support learning at home. COVID-19 restrictions meant that teachers were suddenly tasked with online modes of delivery, necessitating the uptake and use of digital technologies and resources. Parents have found themselves taking on the role of home educators, rather than assisting with homework tasks, which may have formed the basis of previous 'home learning'. Understandably, teachers, families, and students turned to digital resources to supplement this rapid shift to online learning. In this article, the authors discuss the Victorian Government's Birth to Level 10 Numeracy Guide, an online self-determined professional learning resource for educators and families, which aims to foster dynamic approaches to developing student numeracy in schools and at home.

Abstract

Many primary, secondary and tertiary educators need support to engage in inclusive pedagogical practices that challenge homophobia, transphobia and heteronormativity. We present a border-crossing pedagogy (BCP) designed to assist English language arts educators in translating knowledge into action to demolish deeply engrained anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and intersex (LGBTIQ+) bigotry, discrimination and violence. This model is timely given the rise in anti-LGBTIQ+ bigotry as governments pass LGBT-inclusive hate crime laws, executive orders prohibiting LGBT discrimination and marriage equality. We illustrate how the BCP can be used to explore affordances and barriers located in the English curriculum, and beyond, to teach about diverse genders and sexualities, positively recognising and affirming LGBTIQ+ identities.

Abstract

Context: Entrainment and removal of fish from aquatic ecosystems can occur at water pump offtakes. Exclusion screens that reduce these impacts are recognised as an important conservation measure. Aims: Evaluate the effectiveness of the Australian screen design guidelines in protecting larvae and young-of-year age class of a native fish species, Murray cod Maccullochella peelii. Methods: Entrainment and impingement of postflexion larvae and young-of-year were assessed in a controlled laboratory environment. Tests were conducted under a range of approach velocities (AV) and impingement durations for two screen materials. Key results: Fish screens reduced larval entrainment by ≤84%. Screens had no significant effect on reducing larval entrainment at AV ≥0.125 m s−1. Impingement of young-of-year was positively associated with AV and mortality increased with impingement duration, irrespective of screen type. Conclusions: To protect early life-stage Murray cod, it is recommended that water pump offtakes be fitted with 2-mm vertical wedge-wire stainless steel screens and AV be limited to ≤0.1 m s−1. Implications: This study represents the first assessment of the effectiveness of the Australian screen design guidelines in protecting larvae, providing knowledge to further refine specifications for screen design and support the recovery of native fish populations. 42. Wise Humanising Creativity: Changing How We Create in a Virtual Learning Environment

Abstract

This article interrogates how a particular conception of creativity: "wise humanising creativity" (WHC) is manifest within a virtual learning environment (VLE) with children and young people. It reports on the outcomes of C[superscript 2]Learn, a three-year European Commission funded project which introduced innovative digital gaming activities to foster co-creativity in the VLE between players. Theoretically the paper builds on previous work, which has conceptualised the potential for WHC within VLEs, as well as other educational contexts. Within C[superscript 2]Learn, arguments have been made for WHC as an antidote to overly-marketised, competitive notions of creativity, as well as for WHC supporting a view of childhood and youth as empowered--rather than "at risk"--within digital environments. In particular, this paper focuses on outcomes of the project's final piloting in England, Greece and Austria acrossthe primary and secondary age ranges. This research employed a bespoke co-creativity assessment methodology developed for the project. In order to document WHC, this methodology opted to evidence developments in lived experience via qualitative methods including teacher and student interviews, fieldnotes, video capture, observation and student self-assessment tools. The paper articulates how WHC manifests in C[superscript 2]Learn's unique VLE or C[superscript 2]Space, and its potential to develop more nuanced understandings of creativity across digital environments. It then goes on to consider WHC as a useful concept for changing how we create within VLEs, and the implications for educational futures debates and wider understanding of creativity in education as a less marketised and more ethically driven concept.

Abstract

This document presents a model for implementing workplace literacy education that focuses on giving front-line workers or first-line workers basic skills instruction and an appreciation for lifelong learning. The introduction presents background information on the model, which was developed during a partnership between a technical college and an adult education center and two area businesses for the purpose of meeting each business's specific needs: prepare employees for technical changes in the workplace and interdepartmental cross-training; upgrade employees' basic communication and math skills; introduce employees to computer skills and team-building skills; and provide the remedial instruction workers need to attain to pursue additional education. The remainder of the document examines the following components of the model: needs assessment; curriculum development; recruitment and retention; and evaluation of the program on four levels (customer satisfaction, participants' learning gains, participants' behavior change; and the program's organizational impact). Appendixes constituting approximately 70% of the document contain the survey instruments, forms, interview schedules, and pretests/posttests developed for the project's needs assessment, curriculum development, and evaluation phases. Abstract

The learning and communication styles of front-line literacy workers and supervisors at two national industrial sites served by a national workplace literacy grant were examined to determine whether the front-line workers' learning styles differed from those of their supervisors. A learning styles inventory developed by the Center for Innovative Teaching Techniques of the Wichita Public School system in Kansas was administered to the 195 employees in the study population. Of those individuals, 74% were hourly workers, 26% were managers, 77% were male, and 38% were members of minority groups. Fewer than 10% of the front-line workers had any postsecondary education, whereas more than 50% of the managers had a college degree and more than 10% had attended college for at least 1 year. Of the managers, 73% proved to be individual learners and 62% were characterized as written-expressive learners. Of the front-line workers, 58% were determined to be group learners, 68% were characterized as oral-expressive learners, and 54% were determined to have an auditory/visual/kinesthetic learning style. It was concluded that learners' failures in workplace literacy programs may have more to do with how learners are taught than with their perceived learning deficiencies. (MN)
