Abstract

The advent of a new vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopic absorption detector for gas chromatography has enabled applications in many areas. Theoretical simulations of VUV spectra using computational chemistry can aid the new technique in situations where experimental spectra are unavailable. In this study, VUV spectral simulations of paraffin, isoparaffin, olefin, naphthene, and aromatic (PIONA) compounds using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods were investigated. Important factors for the simulations, such as functionals/basis sets and formalism of oscillator strength calculations, were examined and parameters for future PIONA compound simulations were obtained by fitting computational results to experimental spectra. The simulations produced satisfactory correlations between experimental observations and theoretical calculations, and enabled potential analysis applications for complex higher distillate fuels, such as diesel fuel. Abstract

SUMMARY Medium access control (MAC) protocols play a vital role in wireless networking. It is well-known that the high control overhead of IEEE 802.11 MAC is the limiting factor on the throughput and delay performance of wireless networks. In our prior work, three polling service-based medium access control protocols (PSMACs) are developed to amortize the high control overhead over multiple frame transmissions, thus achieving higher efficiency. Both analysis and simulations are conducted to validate the efficacy of the proposed protocols. In this paper, we extend this work by implementing the distributed version of PSMAC, i.e., PSMAC 2, on the GNU Radio and universal software radio peripheral (GNU Radio/USRP) platform. We discuss various design considerations and challenges of prototyping PSMAC 2 and carry out extensive experimental studies with the GNU Radio/USRP PSMAC testbed. Our experimental results are found to be consistent with the theoretical study reported in our prior work and validate the advantages of PSMAC under a realistic wireless channels. Scalable space-time multiresolution algorithms implemented on massively parallel computers enable large-scale molecular dynamics simulations involving up to a billion atoms, which are applied to the study of nanosystems of great technological importance. Abstract

Health standards are commonly based on only one group of rodents. Additional uncertainty (deriving from animals used as a surrogate for man and low‐dose extrapolations to environmental concentrations) cause inflated margins of safety to be incorporated into health standards. This paper demonstrates how more data and models can be used to produce more realistic and less expensive health criteria. The approach is to collect all available tumor studies for chemicals of interest. Next, common units of dose and response are used to merge data from multiple experiments. Then, an array of mathematical extrapolation models is fitted to the data, and the median model value at each dose of interest is used to compare relative toxicity between different compounds of interest. Finally, the relative toxicity factors can be coupled to a bench mark of human risk so that estimates for all chemicals have relative precision. In this fashion, decisions about control technology become standardized instead of varying by several orders of magnitude. The method works like a field horsepower ranking that is finally calibrated to a standard.

44. Possible effects of dose rate and turnover time of cells on dose-response relationships: implications for radiation protection guidance

Abstract

This work is a qualitative appraisal of the effects of dose-rate and turnover time of the exposed cell population on dose-response relationships. On the basis of the direct and simple treatment given, dose-response relationships are governed by dose-rate as related to the rate of turnover of exposed cells. Dose-response relationships for cells in culture and those functioning in the body are discussed and some differences are pointed out. For purposes of radiation protection, the assumption of a linear dose-response relationship is supported. The processes of cell death and alteration as related to dose and turnover time of cells are discussed as factors of prime importance in experimental design and in the medical treatment of abnormal cells.
