The present document includes a state-of-the-art review of solar envelope systems that are already on the market or that can potentially reach that stage in a short-medium timeframe. The analysis focuses on the technological integration of such solutions in the envelope and building, but non-technical issues such as aesthetic, architectural integration and customer acceptance are also tackled. The solar envelope systems are classified in: Solar harvesting systems: systems that generate electricity or heat; Solar gains control systems, controlling; Hybrid systems: combination of solar harvesting and solar gains control systems.

Regulated transcription termination provides an efficient and responsive means to control gene expression. In bacteria, intrinsic termination occurs through the formation of an RNA stem-loop (T-loop), which disrupts the RNA polymerase elongation complex, resulting in its dissociation from the DNA template. Bacteria have a number of strategies for over-riding intrinsic T-loops, one of which is the formation of mutually exclusive RNA structures. Proteins that promote the formation of alternative RNA structures are known as anti-terminators. The ANTAR domains are a family of RNA binding anti-terminators that are most commonly associated with two components signalling (TCS) pathways. Unlike the canonical DNA binding output domains of TCS proteins, ANTAR domains facilitate their response by binding to RNA. EutV from E. faecalis is an ANTAR domain protein that controls gene expression of the eut operon. EutV is a model protein for studying ANTAR induced anti-termination. The ANTAR domain binding motif consists of dual RNA hexaloops, with the second hexaloop overlapping with the 5’ end of the intrinsic T-loop. Despite the well-defined binding motif, it is unknown at the molecular level how the ANTAR domains interact with RNA. In this work we have determined the 2.16 Å resolution crystal structure of the ANTAR domain protein EutV in its RNA-free form. The dimeric structure of EutV shows a high degree of similarity to the previously characterised AmiR, suggesting a common dimeric organisation for these domains. We went on to solve the structure of EutV bound to RNA, which represents the first reported structure of an ANTAR domain bound to its cognate RNA binding motif. Our studies highlight the key interactions between conserved EutV residues and the RNA, as well as protein conformational changes undergone upon RNA binding. These interactions were validated by alanine mutagenesis, which allowed us to propose an updated model for ANTAR domain anti-termination.

The addition of a luminescent down-shifting (LDS) layer directly onto a photovoltaic (PV) cell introduces additional loss mechanisms within the system. The combination of non-ideal photo-luminescent materials encapsulated within a limited range of viable host materials, with the increased reflection losses arising from the newly created interface represent losses which must be overcome for LDS to offer an enhancement to the underlying cells efficiency. Exploiting the interaction between the highly enhanced electric fields established close to a metal nanoparticles (MNP’s) surface is one route aimed at mitigating the poor optical properties of the luminophore-host combinations available. Alternative approaches, aimed at addressing the other loss mechanisms within such a system have gone relatively unexplored. Exploiting the non-ideal nature of the photo-luminescent materials available, offers a possibility of recycling the photons which previously did not undergo photoluminescence while also addressing the reflection losses through the inclusion of selectively reflecting optical structures. The hybrid device designs, incorporating single- and double layer- antireflection coatings composed of commonly available materials offer enhancements in the underlying PV cells performance of 8% - 30% depending upon the design criteria established. The transfer matrix approach adopted allowed the impact of individual design considerations on the reflection suppression capabilities of the structure, as well as their impact on the underlying cells efficiency to be readily determined.
