During the last 30 years, a natural return of wolves has been recorded at local, national and international levels over several mountain ranges in the Alps and, more recently, in both hilly areas and plains in Europe. Accepting the natural return of wolves in human-dominated landscapes is a major challenge, especially in places where memories and experience of coexistence have been lost. After the success of the LIFE WolfAlps project, which ended in May 2018, the European Commission has approved and co-financed LIFE WolfAlps EU (2019-2024), a new project to support wolf-human coexistence at European and pan-Alpine scales. As the expansion of the wolf population knows no administrative boundaries, the presence of the species requires actions effective at local level to improve its coexistence with humans on an international scale. The new, international project works to support local communities in the prevention of wolf attacks, and decision makers in the adoption of the best possible solutions to improve management of wolves, thus improving public acceptance of their expanding distribution and populations, notwithstanding the potential risks. Concrete actions are being implemented to involve all stakeholders interested in and affected by the wolf's presence, in order to make human-wolf coexistence possible across borders, traditions and beliefs.

This study will test the efficacy of a 21-day just-in-time (JIT) adaptive intervention delivered via mobile phone (smartphone) application (app) that utilizes tailored and personalized daily messages about alcohol expectancies, alcohol use, and negative alcohol consequences to reduce high-risk alcohol use and negative consequences. Participants are college students (ages 18-25) at 4-year colleges or universities as well as those attending 2-year community colleges who are a traditionally under-served population regarding alcohol research. Eligible participants reported drinking 2+ days/week, having 1+ occasions of heavy episodic drinking (defined as 4+/5+ drinks on one occasion for women/men) within the past 2 weeks, and experiencing 4+ alcohol-related negative consequences in the past month.

In many early European cultures, humans shared an overall positive view of the wolf (Boitani, 1995; Boitani and Ciucci, 2009). But this changed with the anthropocentric view of nature brought about by Christianity as well as with the process of domestication and the advent of extensive animal husbandry (Boitani, 1995). Wolves were then strongly persecuted, leading to their extirpation in almost all their former range across the continent. In the last few decades, however, wolves have returned to many parts of Europe from which they had been absent for centuries. Their recovery impacts a range of human activities and interests and is accompanied by a variety of social conflicts and diverging points of view on how wolves should be managed (Boitani and Linnell, 2015; Linnell and Cretois, 2018). Conflicts and the negative economic impacts of wolf damage to livestock are the most pressing problems for wolf management today. Public debate and academic research on wolf–human relations tend to focus on these issues (Rode et al., 2021). The ecological roles of wolves in ecosystem structure and functioning are increasingly recognized (Hebbelwhite et al., 2005; Kuijper et al., 2013). However, although predator-prey interactions are highly contextdependent, most studies on this topic have been undertaken in large, natural landscapes. In most of Europe, human actions attenuate the ecological effects of large carnivores (Kuijper et al., 2016). Nevertheless, new values and the potential social benefits of human–wolf coexistence are underappreciated. Wolves are an important generator of culture, ethnography and tradition (Álvares et al., 2011) and their presence brings educational and research benefits, income from regional and product marketing, as well as socio-economic benefits from wildlife tourism (Rode et al., 2021). Different forms of tourism associated with wolves, such as wolf watching, photographing, or observing signs of their presence have already been practiced for a couple of decades in North America (Wilson and Heberlein, 1996) and to a lesser extent in Europe (Koščová and Koščová, 2016; Bavo and Villar Lama, 2020; Notaro and Grilli, 2021). Although tourism can increase the value of the species locally, such activities can also have negative impacts on wolves and their habitat, especially with the growing demand for wildlife tourism (Curtin and Kragh, 2014). The following guidelines were prepared by members of the LIFE WOLFALPS EU project group and the Large Carnivore Initiative for Europe expert group of the IUCN/SSC to set specific recommendations for responsible non-consumptive use of wolves in tourism which has as little impact on wolves as possible. The aim of these guidelines is to promote tourism activities that go beyond direct sightings of wildlife by focusing on wolf presence and wolf-related cultural heritage, creating economic opportunities for local communities in areas with wolves and consequently leading to increased tolerance towards this species.

Im Rahmen des Citizen Science Network Austria (https://www.citizen-science.at/netzwerk) wurde im Februar 2018 die Arbeitsgruppe Offene Biodiversitätsdatenbanken in Citizen Science-Projekten ins Leben gerufen. Die Ziele dieser AG sind (I) die Formulierung eines Fragenkatalogs, der bei der Entscheidung, die Forschungsdaten eines Citizen Science-Biodiversitätsprojektes zu öffnen, helfen soll, (II) den Prozess der Forschungsdatenöffnung an einem konkreten Projekt zu begleiten und zu dokumentieren und (III) neben den Forschungsdaten auch ein sogenanntes Datenpaper zu verfassen und zu publizieren. Das vorliegende Dokument ist das Produkt aus Punkt (I) der Ziele, der Fragenkatalog.

As part of the Citizen Science Network Austria (https://www.citizen-science.at/netzwerk), the working group Open Biodiversity Databases in Citizen Science Projects was established in February 2018. The objectives of this working group are (I) to formulate a catalogue of questions to help deciding about open publishing of research data collected in a citizen science biodiversity project, (II) to accompany and document the process of open publishing of research data from a concrete project and (III) to write and publish a so-called data paper in addition to publishing research results. This document is the product of point (I) of the objectives, the questionnaire.

Im Laufe eines Jahres wurde von der Arbeitsgruppe für Qualitätskriterien des Citizen Science Network Austria ein Kriterienkatalog für Citizen Science Projekte auf Österreich forscht erstellt. Aus diesem Katalog wurden Fragen entwickelt, welche den Projektleiterinnen und Projektleitern von Projekten auf Österreich forscht helfen sollen, die Kriterien zu erfüllen. Durch die Beantwortung der Fragen werden einerseits wichtige Themen bei der Durchführung eines Projektes angesprochen und können so auch durch die Projektleitung berücksichtigt werden, andererseits helfen die Antworten potentiellen Projektteilnehmerinnen und -teilnehmern dabei, auf Basis der dargestellten Informationen eine informierte Entscheidung über eine Teilnahme treffen zu können. Projektleiterinnen und -leiter bekommen diesen Fragenkatalog zugeschickt und senden die Antworten wieder zurück an Österreich forscht. Die Plattformkoordinatoren lesen die Antworten, beraten sich gegebenenfalls mit der AG für Qualitätskriterien und halten bei bestehenden Unklarheiten Rücksprache mit den Projektleiterinnen und -leitern zwecks Klärung und eventueller Hilfestellung. Ziel dieses Prozesses ist es nicht, einzelne Projekte auszuschließen, sondern gemeinsam die Qualität der Citizen Science Merkmale der Projekte zu sichern und eventuell sogar zu erhöhen. In the course of one year the working group for quality criteria of the Citizen Science Network Austria developed a catalogue of criteria for citizen science projects on the platform Österreich forscht. From this catalogue questions were generated, which should help the project leaders of projects in Austria to fulfil the criteria. By answering the questions, important topics are addressed during the implementation of a project and can thus also be considered by the project management. On the other hand, the answers help potential project participants to make an informed decision about participation on the basis of the information presented. Project leaders receive this catalogue of questions and send the answers back to Österreich forscht. The platform coordinators read the answers, consult with the Working Group for Quality Criteria if necessary and contact the project leaders in case of ambiguities for clarification and possible assistance. The aim of this process is not to exclude individual projects, but to jointly ensure the quality of the citizen science characteristics of the projects and eventually even increase them. An open dialogue and exchange and a respectful interaction between all participants is the prerequisite for this.

The platform Österreich forscht (www.citizen-science.at) was founded in 2014 with the objectives of (1) connecting citizen science actors in Austria, (2) providing the broadest possible overview of citizen science projects in Austria, and (3) scientifically advancing citizen science as a method. Following the initiative of the platform Österreich forscht, many of the institutions that are active in citizen science joined forces in the Citizen Science Network Austria in 2017, and thus agreed to advance the quality of citizen science in Austria (http://www.citizen-science.at/the-platform/the-network). An important step in this regard was the establishment of transparent criteria for projects wishing to be listed on the platform Österreich forscht. The objective of these criteria is to maintain and further improve the quality of the projects presented on the platform. Between March 2017 and February 2018, a working group of the platform Österreich forscht consisting of representatives from 17 institutions developed criteria that allow for the transparent evaluation of projects applying to be listed on Österreich forscht. This was a multi-stage process, building both on the knowledge of the working group members as well as on feedback repeatedly provided by external experts from the respective research fields. Throughout October 2017, a version of the quality criteria was available for public online consultation on the platform Österreich forscht, so as to incorporate the knowledge of the general public into the criteria as well. The final version of the quality criteria was presented at the 4th Austrian Citizen Science Conference, 1-3 February 2018, at which point the criteria also came into effect. Projects already listed on Österreich forscht can adapt to meet the criteria over the next year. Projects wishing to be newly listed on Österreich forscht must meet these criteria at the point of listing. Where necessary, the quality criteria will be adapted in the future, in order to respond to new challenges and developments. The version number, i.e. which version of the criteria a project corresponds to, will be indicated on the respective project page. The first part of the criteria is primarily aimed at establishing what defines a citizen science project. Here, we decided on a negative list (i.e. projects that are NOT citizen science), in order to be as open as possible to different concepts and disciplines. This implies that we call all projects citizen science, which are not excluded by this negative list. The professional background of the person leading the project is not crucial as long as the criteria are complied by the project. The criteria in the second part are to be understood as minimum standards which all projects listed on the platform Österreich forscht must fulfill. The evaluation will be carried out by the coordinators of the platform Österreich forscht in consultation with working group members.
