Abstract

In the face of escalating threats posed by human-induced climate change, urgent attention to coral reef restoration is imperative due to ongoing reef degradation. Here, we explored the potential of generating coral micropropagates as a tool to rapidly generate coral tissue for reef restoration and reef engineering. We developed a hypersalinity-induced polyp bailout protocol and a simple attachment device to support the growth of micropropagates on commonly used restoration substrates. We found that hypersalinity induction, at a rate of < 1 ppt hr-1, produced healthy micropropagates of the coral Stylophora pistillata. The highest attachment success (~74%) was achieved in CaCO3 substrate devices, which outperformed PVC (~48%) and Portland cement (~5%). Settled micropropagates displayed rapid growth rates on both CaCO3 (0.037 mm²/day ± 0.002 SE) and PVC (0.057 mm²/day ± 0.008 SE) substrates, while Portland cement induced tissue degradation. Our study provides a detailed methodology for reliably generating, attaching, and growing coral micropropagates and underscores the potential of polyp bailout as a viable technique supporting coral propagation efforts.

15. Development of coral micropropagates for coral restoration

Abstract

Coral reefs, vital ecosystems supporting marine biodiversity, face unprecedented threats from anthropogenic climate change. The resulting reef degradation necessitates urgent restoration research. While conventional methods have focused on fragmentation, the potential of coral micropropagates for restoration remains unexplored. Polyp bailout, where polyps detach in response to acute stress, offers a promising source of micropropagates. This study pursues two objectives: 1) developing a hypersalinity-induced bailout protocol and 2) assessing micropropagate attachment to common restoration substrates. Specifically, this study tests the viability of micropropagates following hypersalinity stress using chlorophyll a fluorimetry and morphological characterization. Following successful micropropagate development, attachment and growth are observed over 14 days on CaCO3, PVC, and cement. A salinity gradient of approximately 1 ppt/hr induced bailout for Stylophora pistillata, producing micropropagates characterized by healthy morphology and average FV/FM values of 0.45 +/- 0.04. Micropropagates attachment was highest on CaCO3 (73.81% +/- 10.75%) surpassing PVC (47.62% +/- 11.66%) and cement (4.76% +/- 7.38%). Post-settlement, micropropagates displayed varying growth rates, with PVC (0.057 +/- 0.008 mm²/day) exhibiting the highest growth rate, followed by CaCO3 (0.037 +/- 0.002 mm²/day), and cement (-0.0068 +/- 0.008 mm²/day). These results show that viable S. pistillata micropropagates can be produced via hypersalinity stress in a reproducible manner and that artificial substrates made from CaCo3 produce successful attachment and healthy lateral tissue growth. Together, these findings suggest that polyp bailout has potential as a technique for generating micropropagates for coral restoration.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is an area of weakness for many students, including those with disabilities. Innovative technology methods may play a role in improving teacher readiness to use evidence-based comprehension practices for all students. In this experimental study, researchers examined a classroom simulation (TLE TeachLivE™) to improve preservice teacher (N = 22) knowledge of evidence-based practices embedded in Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). Participants were randomly assigned to teach in a simulation or observe peers teach in a simulation. Both groups significantly improved their knowledge of CSR practices after experience in the simulation, and all participants indicated an overall positive perception of simulation to prepare teachers.

28. Immigration and Mental Disorders among Asian Americans

Abstract

Objectives. We examined lifetime and 12-month rates of any depressive, anxiety, and substance abuse disorders in a national sample of Asian Americans. We focused on factors related to nativity and immigration as possible correlates of mental disorders. Methods. Data were derived from the National Latino and Asian American Study, the first national epidemiological survey of Asian Americans in the United States. Results. The relationships between immigration-related factors and mental disorders were different for men and women. Among women, nativity was strongly associated with lifetime disorders, with immigrant women having lower rates of most disorders compared with US-born women. Conversely, English proficiency was associated with mental disorders for Asian men. Asian men who spoke English proficiently generally had lower rates of lifetime and 12-month disorders compared with nonproficient speakers. Conclusions. For Asian Americans, immigration-related factors were associated with mental disorders, but in different ways for men and women. Future studies will need to examine gender as an important factor in specifying the association between immigration and mental health.

Abstract

Rural America is undergoing a demographic transition, as the white population decline is matched by a growing movement of racialized minorities into small towns. In the current study, I examine processes of belonging among middle‐class racialized minorities living in predominantly white and rural Northern New England. Through an analysis of in‐depth interviews with n = 58 individuals of color, I show how "misrecognition," or the processes through which community members fail to affirm the humanity of others, can lead to diminished well‐being. I elaborate a novel conceptual model linking a stigmatizing cultural context (chilly social climate; ignorance and racism) with misrecognition (social distancing; having to prove oneself) and well‐being (unease; weariness). The study's main contribution is the generation of theory regarding symbolic boundary processes that undergird racialized minority residents' negotiation of the right to belong in a rapidly changing rural America.
