Underpinned by Michael Apple’s theory of curriculum and power dynamics, Ernesto Laclau’s and Chantal Mouffe’s critical discourse analysis theory, and Manuel Castells’ resistance identity theory, this thesis will analyze the content of one recently published public school textbook to determine if Black American historical figures and historical events involving Black Americans are being distorted, manipulated and/or erased to serve the purpose of reinforcing entrenched power dynamics. The thesis will also analyze Hip-Hop music to determine if Black Americans are using the music as a tactical means of producing a counternarrative that critiques the American public school system and the public-school curricula’s depiction of Black American historical figures and historical events involving Black Americans, as well as a means to refresh the historical memory of Black Americans. Ultimately, this thesis will determine if the textbook content in question has evolved to be more culturally inclusive in comparison to previous iterations of textbooks. It will also highlight the resistance consciousness that exists in Hip-Hop, and how contemporary Hip-Hop music is a continuance of previous iterations of artistic resistance to the political domination of this racial group.

This thesis is a comparative analysis of the neoliberal market-based reforms and outcomes implemented in both the United States and Sweden during the latter portion of the twentieth century. This thesis highlights the impact associated with the implementation of the reforms then does a comparative analysis of the outcomes. This thesis seeks to uncover the impact of the reforms and the true nature of the reforms. Many classical sociological theories are used to analyze and contextualize the education reforms as a means to preserve existing social stratifications and societal norms and introduce the capacity for private access to public education funding. Theorists used for this thesis include Karl Marx, Max Weber, Samuel Bowles, Herbert Gintis, Iris Marion Young, Stephen J. McNamee and Robert K. Miller. When analyzing these reforms through the lenses provided by the theorists, it is clear that government rhetoric associated with the reforms in both nations served as a disguise for other objectives, which this thesis shows.

Background Pregnancy in epidermolysis bullosa (EB) has not been comprehensively studied. Objective We aimed to develop a foundational database, which could provide peri-obstetric advice in EB. Methods Survey questionnaires were sent to obstetricians, unaffected mothers of EB babies, and mothers with EB. Results were analyzed using chi-square, Fisher exact, and t-tests. Results Out of 1346 obstetricians surveyed, 195 responded, and only 14 had encountered EB. All recommended normal vaginal delivery (NVD), except for one elective Caesarean section (CS). We received responses from 75 unaffected mothers who had delivered EB babies. They had significantly more complications in their EB pregnancies compared to their non-EB pregnancies. A further 44 women with various types of EB who had given birth responded. Most delivered via NVD and had no significant increase in complications in both their EB and non-EB pregnancies. In both groups, there were no significant differences in blistering at birth in babies delivered via NVD and CS. Conclusion In conclusion, most patients with EB who are capable of giving birth do not have an increased risk for pregnancy-related complications and NVD appears to be safe. Awareness of this data amongst obstetricians and dermatologists should lead to improved quality of care for mothers and babies affected with EB.

Problems of constructing a sediment budget for an inlet is often a challenge due to constraints on data collection quality of data, and assumptions one is willing to consider. Existing literature does not provide a systematic foundation for equations considered and often engineers and geologists typically do not properly consider the mathematical constraints placed on the problem of sediment budget construction. The present technical note presents a simple methodology for assessing sediment budget, i.e. what is possible, and what is not possible via a matrix equation system and linear algebra. It is hoped that engineers and geologists will not impose unrealistic expectations on the sediment budget system via using such an approach. Some simple examples are given of both pitfalls and correct approaches to sediment budget development., Published in Coastal Engineering, v60 p232-325, 2012. A fatal recurrence of a left atrial myxoma was observed despite resection of the original tumor complete with its stalk and a portion of atrial septum. The evidence suggests that this recurrent tumor developed from "pre-tumor" cells in the region of the fossa ovalis. The rate of growth of the second tumor was faster than would have been predicted. Clinical manifestations were similar to those with the initial tumor. Wide excision of the atrial septum with the stalk of such tumors should offer the best chance for operative cure, but prolonged postoperative observation is important if signs of recurrence are to be detected at a time when operative removal can be carried out with minimal risk to the patient.

To determine the risk of arterial reocclusion or recurrent ischemia after acute intervention in myocardial infarction, we analyzed the results of coronary arteriography performed acutely and at 1 week in 50 consecutive patients who received acute intervention. Successful recanalization of the infarct vessel was achieved in 46 (92%) patients after therapy with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator, percutaneous coronary angioplasty, or both. Follow-up angiography in 44 showed early reocclusion in 10 patients (23%). Intermittent patency during acute arteriography was always associated with reocclusion; suboptimal (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction [TIMI] class 2) flow was associated with a 50% rate of reocclusion. Although residual stenosis of>50% alone was not predictive of rethrombosis, 90% of all reocclusions were associated with either stenosis>50%, TIMI 2 flow, or intermittent patency. Absence of these angiographic risk factors predicted a 95% patency rate at follow-up. In-hospital cardiac complications occurred in 17 of 23 (74%) patients with residual stenosis of>50% (death in four, ischemia in 13), and late revascularization was required in 53% of survivors. Only 15% of the group with p =50% appears to predict a high incidence of negative in-hospital clinical outcomes and the need for subsequent revascularization.
