In this article, we deal with design considerations of a new ac hybrid-excitation permanent-magnet machine with axial stator. Due to the presence of an axial stator, the machine features a typical three-dimensional geometric structure and field distribution. A simplified reluctance-based network is developed to capture the main design features of the machine. The analytical equations are deduced relating the main geometric dimensions to the machine design criteria: speed, power, and flux regulation capability. The influence of key machine geometric parameters, i.e., radial/axial air-gap length, stack length, and bore diameter, on output power, flux density, and flux regulation capability is investigated. It is found that there is a design tradeoff between the machine power density and flux regulation capability. The d/q-axis inductance and its ratio, which has an influence on flux weakening capability and operation performance, is examined. Finally, a 6-pole/36-slot prototype is built. The heat pump operated single-stage humidification-dehumidification desalination system, configured with a subcooler and a heat regenerator, has been proven highly effective in improving both freshwater productivity and energy efficiency. To investigate the potential benefits of increasing the number of humidification stages, this paper presents a heat pump operated two-stage humidification-dehumidification desalination system by adding a pre-humidifier. Subcooler and condenser of the heat pump are used as the heat sources of the main humidifier and the pre-humidifier, respectively. Through parametric studies, a comparative analysis is conducted on the thermodynamic and economic performances of both the heat pump operated single-stage system and two-stage system at various operating conditions. The results show that such system modification can greatly improve system performances. Compared to the single-stage system, the maximum freshwater productivity of the two-stage system is 42.89 kg/h, increased by 19.77 %; the peak gain output ratio is 7.93, up by 9.53 %; and the lowest specific electricity consumption is 79.34 kWh/m3, reduced by 15.15 %. Furthermore, the freshwater production cost for the two-stage system, ranging from 7.78 to 13.33 $/m3, is also superior that of the single-stage system, further demonstrating its substantial value in practical product development and market promotion. • A heat pump operated two-stage humidification-dehumidification system is proposed. • Performances of single and two-stage systems are compared at identical conditions. • Freshwater production costs of the two-stage system range from 7.78 to 13.33 $/m3. • The two-stage system is significantly more efficient than the single-stage system. In this article, an increasing interest for permanent magnet synchronous machines with low torque ripple and low vibration is observed. The purpose of this article is to investigate the topology of nonuniformly distributed teeth and its influence on cogging torque, tooth ripple harmonics, and torque ripple of permanent magnet synchronous machines. The topologies with different numbers of nonuniformly distributed teeth are investigated. Analytical procedure is developed to illustrate the impacts of nonuniformly distributed teeth on cogging torque and unbalanced magnetic pull, and then identify the appropriate nonuniformly distributed teeth. A commercial 10 kW 8-pole 48-slot V-shaped interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine is taken as the reference base machine. The machines with two and six nonuniformly distributed teeth are chosen to make an overall comparison with the well-known skewing slots. The machine with two nonuniformly distributed teeth is finally chosen to be fabricated. In current engineering, the skewing slots approach is commonly used for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to reduce torque ripple and electromagnetic vibration. However, this approach may limit the axial length of the motor and increase the manufacturing cost. This article studies a segmented rotor with different pole widths approach to mitigate torque ripple and electromagnetic vibration for PMSM, which has a lower implementation cost and facilitates mechanized production. The mapping relationship between geometric dimensions and torque performance is obtained, and the optimal dimensions are determined. An 8-pole/48-slot V-shaped PMSM is taken as the original motor, and the influence of engineering error on the torque performance of the presented approach is discussed. The electromagnetic performances and vibration responses of the motor with the presented approach are compared with that of the skewing slot motor to verify the effectiveness of the presented approach. Reducing the energy consumption of hydrogen liquefaction process is an urgent issue to improve the economy of liquid hydrogen transportation. A novel large-scale hydrogen liquefaction system, with a capacity of 100 TPD, is proposed in this paper. The pre-cooling system is composed of a mixed-refrigerant (MR) refrigeration cycle and a CO 2 –NH 3 cascade refrigeration cycle. Due to the auxiliary pre-cooling effect of the CO 2 –NH 3 cascade cycle, temperature of the pre-cooled hydrogen can be as low as −200.9 °C. A modified MR Joule Brayton cycle with an additional compressor is used as the cryogenic system to cool the hydrogen from −200.9 °C to −252.2 °C. Besides, a four-stage ortho-to-para conversion (OPC) process is utilized. Performance of the novel system is investigated and optimized using the Aspen HYSYS software. According to the results, the lowest specific energy consumption (SEC) of the proposed process is 6.15 kWh/kg LH2 and the exergy efficiency is as high as 67.4%. Based on the energy analysis, the best system coefficient of performance is 0.1751 with a 96.3% of p-H 2 in the liquid hydrogen. In addition, compared to the initial conceptual system, the proposed system exhibits significant performance enhancements, a 20% reduction in SEC and a 27.9% increase in exergy efficiency. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to assess the impact of refrigerant composition and hydrogen pressure on the system, resulting in the determination of the optimal proportions of refrigerant components and the optimal inlet pressure. This article presents a new rotor configuration for V-shaped interior permanent magnet machine to reduce torque ripple and electromagnetic vibration. The proposed rotor structure consists of two segments staggered mechanically 180°. In each segment, the intersection angle between two magnets of one V-shaped pole is different to the others, resulting in a different pole arc to pole pitch ratio. The dimensions and total volumes of magnets keep unchanged. Benefitting from the two opposing segments, unbalanced magnetic pull can be offset. Machine performances in terms of back-EMF, d-&q-axis inductance, radial and axial force and instantaneous torque ripple are intensively compared and evaluated to the conventional machine with skewing slots, which is often used in mass production. Comprehensive models using coupled multiphysic fields are established and the comparative study of electromagnetic vibration aspects are done. Two machines, i.e., the proposed machine and the conventional machine with slot skewing are prototyped. In traditional distribution system, power flow was unidirectional; thus loads were usually aggregated into the substation as an equivalent constant bus in the original risk analysis of transmission system. Detail structures of the distribution system were absolutely ignored. However, distribution system is transformed from passive to active nowadays with more and more distributed generations (DGs) being integrated into it. So, distribution system not only can be considered as loads but also can be considered as virtual power plants to supply power to local loads and even to send power back to the transmission system sometimes. In this paper, a hierarchical method is presented to evaluate the impact of role changing of the distribution system in power system risk assessment. In the study, DGs can supply critical loads in distribution system through re-dispatching after some contingency happens. Discrete probability model is employed to simulate the intermittent output of DGs. Available supply capacity (ASC) is used as a general constraint to guarantee the security level of distribution system that needs high reliability. Also, an iterative calculation between transmission system and distribution network is adopted to derive the risk indices with considering detail structures of the active distribution network. Further, impact of some factors on system risk calculation, such as DGs' capacities, dispersions, locations, and component outage probabilities, are discussed.
