Reducing CO2 emissions is crucial for the future survival of the planet and the demand for innovative technologies to capture and reduce CO2, focusing on global net-zero carbon emissions is growing significantly. Hence, researchers worldwide are investigating approaches to mitigate the greenhouse effect caused by excessive emissions of CO2. Low melting point liquid metals offer promising opportunities to exploit novel chemistry in negative emission technologies. In this paper, a high-yield, safe and on-demand approach based on Li-containing liquid metal for the reduction of CO2 to solid materials at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure is reported. In this process, Li metal plays a major role in driving the dissociation of CO2 to its elemental constituents, carbon and oxygen. During the CO2 reduction process, Li dissolved in gallium liquid metal, diffuses to the liquid–gas interface and reduces CO2 to carbon, while undergoing an oxidation reaction. The resulting crust that forms on the surface of the Li–Ga liquid metal alloy consists of solid carbonaceous materials that can be directly utilized as a supercapacitor, achieving a sustainable process for CO2 reduction. The use of Li–Ga liquid metal alloys enables CO2 conversion at near room temperature producing carbonaceous materials that can be effectively integrated into energy storage systems. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and durability of Pt catalysts should be both valued for successful commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). We offer a facile one-pot synthesis method to prepare Pt/CeO 2 /C composite catalysts. CeO 2 nanoparticles, with high Ce 3+ concentration ranging from 30.9% to 50.6%, offers the very defective surface where Pt nanoparticles preferentially nuclear and growth. The Pt nanoparticles are observed sitting on the CeO 2 surface, increasing the Pt CeO 2 interface. The high concentration of oxygen vacancies on CeO 2 surface and large Pt CeO 2 interface lead to the strong Pt CeO 2 interaction, effectively improving the ORR activity and durability. The mass activity is increased by up to 50%, from 36.44 mA mg −1 of Pt/C to 52.09 mA mg −1 of Pt/CeO 2 /C containing 20 wt.% CeO 2 . Pt/CeO 2 /C composite catalysts containing 10–30 wt.% CeO 2 loss about 80% electrochemical surface area after 10,000 cycles, which is a fivefold enhancement in durability, compared to Pt/C losing 79% electrochemical surface area after 2000 cycles. Bismuth-based electrocatalysts are effective for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction to formate. However, at room temperature, these materials are only available in solid state, which inevitably suffers from surface deactivation, declining current densities, and Faradaic efficiencies. Here, the formation of a liquid bismuth catalyst on the liquid gallium surface at ambient conditions is shown as its exceptional performance in the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (i.e., CO 2 RR). By doping a trace amount of bismuth (740 ppm atomic) in gallium liquid metal, a surface enrichment of bismuth by over 400 times (30 at%) in liquid state is obtained without atomic aggregation, achieving 98% Faradic efficiency for CO 2 conversion to formate over 80 h. Ab initio molecular simulations and density functional theory calculations reveal that bismuth atoms in the liquid state are the most energetically favorable sites for the CO 2 RR intermediates, superior to solid Bi-sites, as well as joint GaBi-sites.
